  • MARKO gives an unbiased and honest review of the new 2024 Gibson Slash Jessica Les Paul. Is this a great Les Paul or just another 50's LP with a $500 Slash sticker on it...

Marko, I have been watching your reviews since you made the first Wolfgang USA one 6 or 7 years ago, All i have to say is that your content really outstands others cause of its uniqueness and the interest factor that your reviews have, really make the 30 to 45 min go like a breeze... Keep up the good, pure and honest work that you are doing, and we hope to see more from you over the coming years.... Cheers! from Pakistan!...

I really wish they did the original faded cherry look on this guitar - was so iconic on the Illusions tour. For sure, one of the most famous guitars in rock history. I get it, the guitar eventually faded to honey but bizarre choice IMO.
But still gonna buy one. Appreciate this review, you clearly know your stuff, have a solid ear for pickups and overtones etc, know the spec inside out - and you conveyed your honesty and appreciation for the model brilliantly

The Custombuckers in these are actually spectacular. I have Multiple Gibsons from 70's to present (57 Classics, Burstbuckers, Dirty Fingers etc) and The Slash sounds, plays and feels better than any of them. I liked Guns and Roses as I was 17 when they came out, but I am really not a superfan of any particular guitarist. It's the only expensive new guitar I have bought but I feel it was worth the cost over the 50's Standard with the AAA top and Custombuckers. I was going to buy a Cherryburst standard before getting it. I think with the new management a lot has changed there.

The allusion about the car is about the engine made💯of sense. And they should put those Duncans in it. I bought an Adam jones standard and again they failed putting the Duncan in the bridge. But they put it in the Epiphone version with a “ correct”

Enjoyed your review. Glad you finally enjoyed a Slash Signature Les Pauls. A few comments I do have as I also love Slash and own a bunch of his stuff including a 1988 Les Paul and a Signed Aged 2008 Jessy. I know that you hate it doesn’t have the Seymours but it has Custombuckers Alnico IIs which to my ear are the best pickups Gibson currently makes and I’m some respects better than the Seymours. Those pickups alone are worth $500 USD plus tax. Also not all of the necks are like the 50s Les Pauls. I own a Slash number 4 and that neck is really chunky and with big shoulders. I also own a Vermillion and that neck is closer to my 1960 Custom Shop v1. I’m happy that they tried to replicate the mid eighties neck on this Jessy cause as Slash said to Agnese, the neck on Jessy is more of a medium neck. It’s a shame that the did include the dot on the i of Gibson, which those mid eighties didn’t have. The color looks great more mimicking the period when he first got it. He actually asked and called Gibson. Gibson didn’t have him anything for free. Gibson didn’t even know who slash was in those they and both Steph and Jessy were sold to him at cost. Apparently I couldn’t say for sure they didn’t include the thumb bleeders which is also accurate to the original. He could’ve replaced the control knobs for mushrooms as opposed to the originals which were speed knobs. Also they could’ve included the original back covers which were brown not black and currently sell for a pretty penny. Anyway, thanks for this man I hope my new Jessy looks as good as yours but it’s all about the tone. I can’t wait to compare it with my 08 Jessica. I think they will be called Jessy and lil Jessy. Cheers man have a great evening.

1983 to 1987 les paul standards are some of the best Les Pauls ever made along with the 80s pre historic 59 reissues and they sound far closer to a real 59 les Paul than any of current custom shop reissues .
The TIm Shaw PAFs are killer pickups and they have Jimmy Page tone for days . Even Troggly was able to get very good Page tone when he demod an 87 standard and another when he revieiwed an 83 pre historic reiissue .

Did 80s Gibson get three piece tops normally or is a factory second because it got a three-piece top? This is one area of Gibson history I don’t know much about which would be the 80s too mid 90s. Many of my first guitars were late 90s Gibson‘s, which personally I thought were some great guitars. One of them was essentially wino but no binding or piezo.

    • @sfessler123
      @sfessler123 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

From what I gather.. they used 3 piece tops on solid colors. Like Ebony. Slash wanted a L.P. so they bursted it because it was already a factory 2nd, and that's what he wound up with.

It is another example how Gibson tries to bug into the Slash space trying to revitalise the old "Appetite for Destruction spirit" without doing it right. Maybe a ggod guitar, but no authentic choice as a Slash fan. Nice try, Gibson.

It’s amazing how when you like how something looks, it often skews your judgement on sound as well. Not to be taken as a slight by any means, but as a general observation on us humans.
With all due respect, this guitar is the same as all the other Slash Standard models down to the pickups. The ONLY differences on Jessica are the lack of nibs on the fret ends and the 3 piece top. The rest is identical, neck profile included. I went through several Slash Standards myself before I settled on the one I kept and several I returned because the neck was too fat - there is quite a bit of variation and it seems on this one, you got one you liked first, which is lucky.
I find it interesting how much your tune changed on this guitar vs. your original review of the Appetite Slash Standard and the Victoria you reviewed a few years ago. Last time, all you talked about how was inaccurate the guitar was compared to the Custom Shop versions and how bad of a deal they were and that the pickups did not sound as good as the ones in your Standard/Traditional and how you should just pay a used Custom Shop version.
Dare I say you just got one this time with a slightly better setup pickup-wise (not intonation/action-wise) out of the box with a better sounding piece of wood and a more agreeable neck profile. That’s the thing with Gibson - you either like them because you get a good one, or you get a very average one or a complete dog and you don’t.

I wonder how long before Jarrod Brandon bails on the the Gibson pickup shop . He sold Brandon wound pickups to go with Gibson and he wants to do good things and he has made improvements to Gibson pickups but progress is slow and i am sure he is having road blocks thrown in front of him Just like Tim Shaw experienced at Gibson in the 80s and Tom Holmes did in the 90s .

The audacity of GibCo and their pricing these days is beyond words. A few months ago could get the LP Tribute for under 1k and they "discontinued" it. Reality is they sanded the Gibson logo off, slapped on an Epi logo, relabeled as '59 VOS and raised(!) the price to 1299.99! Ludicrous!
Additionally... November 2023, I ordered a custom JP2C head for 3449.00 "out the door" (traded a E-II eclipse and a Fender Ultra HSS strat for 2200.00 towards purchase). Received delivery April 1, 2024. As of April 23rd, 2024 the same shop now has all JP2Cs "starting" at 4199.99! IT IS an amazing amp, but could easily buy two of almost anything else on the market (possibly with cabs) for the same price. Paying the price for perceived exclusivity.🤷

Aesthetically it looks great. 3 piece top very cool, but to your point, funny an original “B grade” top is now accompanied by an upcharge. I would prefer the cherry burst though. I like ebony over rosewood, but after a good conditioning it should look great. If Gibson gonna give us Gibson prices, give us the exact shit as much as you can. Whether you believe in pickups or not, at least give us the authentic Slash ones. Out of the box presentation and case candy on point too. Would I pay $3-3.5k? No, but if you can get a deal on it, being a Slash or Gibson fan, you could do way worse.

This "Slash Jessica" is not authentic to the original AT ALL. The original was a factory seconds sent to Slash in 1987. It was a LP standard of the time. That means it had a slim taper neck, NOT a fat 50s neck.
I don't really see how this is "inspired by Jessica." It's nothing like Jessica, other than the top. It's just a 50s standard.
If you look for pictures of Slash playing this in the Use your Illusions tour, you'll see, of course, that Jessica had it's original heritage cherry burst. It has a different kind of rosewood, too.
If they want it to look like how Jessica looks TODAY then why isn't it distressed like the real Jessica? If it's to be pristine, then make it like how Jessica was when she was pristine (heritage cherry).
I mean, the current Les Paul classic has the thin neck. It's actually closer to the real Jessica than this "Jessica" is.
Sorry to hear about your father. All the best.

There's nothing special about the guitar and does not have SD pickups. The nibs also bother me. Don't think it is worth it.

Gibson did not give this guitar to Slash, he paid it at cost... this guitar is a massive huge missed opportunity from Gibson... one more... 🙈🙈🙈🙄🙄🙄

Gibson sues everyone for copying a Les Paul yet Slash gets a pass playing a Chris Derrig Les Paul COPY….. and the imposter Les Paul brought Gibson more sales than ever before including Les Paul himself…. So the moral of the story is…buy Chinese Les Pauls and upgrade the hardware and save money…. Gibson has lost its way and not worth the hype or price

Something I've always thought about that..the chris Derrig copy was very high quality and wasn't something that would make gibson look bad..just my 2 cents

There is no law against a small, Luthier copying a Gibson Les Paul and doing a private sale to his customer and the guitar also never bore the name Gibson.
What Gibson sues for is major, mass production guitar companies copying their Les Paul and trying to pass it off as a rea Gibson Les Paul Standard or they use their own name but copy the Les Paul either exact or something very close.

Still…. My point is Gibson is ludicrous and over priced and now one out of ten LPs are worthy of the great name it once was…. It use to be one out of every 10 strats were good… and Epiphones now seem better…. My real point is I am done with Gibson… we can argue over small builds, copies and infringement til we both pass out…. The hype of Murphy Lab and this and that is a dream that has came and went for me personally….. so there you have it…. Thanks

Epiphone is not as good as Gibson. I’ve played live with both and the epiphone had problems with microphonic feedback.

@@thedrewh10 I think you missed the point. The new Epiphones are fabulous and way better that ever. The new Les Pauls with the Gibson headstock and custombuckers are great and require little set up
Work. The old Squiers, and Epiphones and even the SE PRS line has stepped up their games making affordable quality guitars that beat most Gibsons I have played and even own….. 2 each their own…. Play what you like
