The Legion 9i makes all Laptops look Pathetic

  • The Legion 9i Gen 8 feels like a gaming laptop from the future. It has completely unique features like an integrated liquid cooler, replaceable keycaps and switches and high end specs with some of the lowest temperatures we've seen. This is meant to be the best Legion laptop in their lineup, a flagship that showcases what's possible in 2023. And because of that, it can make all other 2023 gaming laptops feel pretty pathetic.
** Our unit contained a pre-production battery configuration so battery life couldn't be tested. **

Even the most compact of itx builds doesnt compete with the utility provided here. I ordered one solely because of how often I travel and how convenient it would be. Just bought one with 64GB RAM, 4090, and 2TB. BTW, don't forget to speak to a sales rep (you can chat on the website) and inquire about a discount. I asked and said "I'd be dumb not to ask" and they replied, asking if I'm a teacher, military, student, or medical person. I said that, unfortuantely, I'm just a retired bedridden engineer -- and they still gave me almost a $300 discount on a $5,000 USD bill. I mean, it was still like a 6% discount or something and you can't complain about that just for two minutes of time!

I was able to get the Legion 9i Gen 8 priced out with Windows 11 Pro, the 4090, and 64GB of DDR5 at $3345 with multiple discounts. Damn! And the display is insane and the reason why I chose the 9i over the 7i. The 7i doesn't have an option for the miniLED display. So tempted to pull the trigger on this beast! I already have the Asus Scar 16 with 4080 and only 32GB DDR5, but it has the 2560 x 1600 miniLED HDR1000 display @ 240Hz. It's a great gaming laptop and I only paid $2800 for it, so may give it to my son if I get the 9i. Decisions decisions!

I have the 9i, the screen is fantastic and build quality is great. Turn off Nahemic and the speakers are pretty good too. Indeed, the type of work I do benefits from having as many CUDA cores as possible for parallelism, rather than higher clock speed.
I have a separate Legion 7i Pro 4080 laptop which can run its GPU at max wattage, but it’s a significantly thicker and heavier machine.

    • @little_fluffy_clouds
      @little_fluffy_clouds 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@sflxn naturally, this is highly subjective, but for me, it really didn’t. I’ve sold my ASUS to upgrade to the P1. There’s much more to a laptop than its list of specs. ASUS had a worse keyboard, trackpad,
screen and customer support, but it was also cheaper, so not a like for like comparison. I just wanted a bigger screen without adding too much weight.
For me, P1 is the best thin and light mobile workstation out there if you want the ultimate mix of quality and portability, not if you just want highest possible performance. Lenovo’s Legion series are a better fit purely for performance, as long as you don’t mind something thicker and heavier (so you’re trading off portability for performance).
The Legion is a gaming-first machine with balls-out performance where you can also run productivity apps. The P1 is a mobile workstation where ergonomics, reliability and comfort comes first, so it has conservative tuning to tame fan noise and chassis temps. It can also happen to run games rather well on the side, but it’s not its primary purpose in life.
To say the P1 is useless because it doesn’t run its GPU at a zillion watts is like saying a Rolls-Royce is useless because it can’t go at 200 mph. It was never designed to do that. It’s designed for users with different priorities and different preferences.
I’m not hating on ASUS by the way, G14 was a really nice machine for the price and I have an ASUS X670E Extreme motherboard in my desktop PC with an ASUS Harpe mouse. It’s good to have options from different brands. It’s just that when it comes to Windows/Linux laptops, I prefer ThinkPads over anything else and I’m excited to finally have a thin and light ThinkPad which can run anything I throw at it at a good level of performance without sounding like a jet engine. The battery life still sucks, but that’s inevitable with any Intel laptop with comparable specs.

I get that this laptop will be much more powerful than a 1.5/2k laptop but sincerely when you get to this point these laptops are really not that portable anyway... all that weight and added stuff to the bag (plus you will need it to be plugged in to have that kind of performances) it's just reeeaaallyyy not worth it! not at that price!
so I get that you can pick it up and go anywhere but is it worth it? at that price? and for how many people will it be?
and then the manufacturers will be well we've offered them the most powerful laptops but they just didn't buy them! they must not want powerful portability... and they go and give you crap for more money...

Man, I have a Legion Y740 with a 2080 Max-Q and it’s still kicking butt 3 years later. Obviously I ain’t playing nothing at 4K but I can still play most games at med/high settings off my 1440p monitor at about 80 fps. I do have a very high end desk top but I don’t planning on getting another gaming laptop for a long time. With all that being said, this machine looks amazing!

Writing this on my new M16 Zephyrus (4080 version). Loving this machine so far. Great speakers, great screen, great customizability, great design, only wish these came with AMD CPUs so battery life could be better. Anything over 3k for a laptop would be too much for me so this is fine for now.

@@ratus the M16 is really nice. The sd card is uhs II, the ram is fully upgradable, space for extra SSD. It's a great machine. Gorgeous display, great speakers. The 4080 is sufficient for me for everything and sorta futureproof compared to the 4060/4070 versions. I haven't had any manufacturer defect which can happen with laptops and also almost zero light bleed.

I'm looking to get this laptop for traveling and gaming. Do you think the screen and 4080 are worth it? I was looking at the 4070, but I really want the better screen and obviously a 4080 is better, but costs like $700 more.

    • @theompman
      @theompman 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@pludini5266 yeah I know what you mean. I had that dilema as well. The 4090 version is too over priced but at 2699 for the 4080 with 1TB storage and the miniled screen, it's not bad. Plus I went for the 4080 because of the 12gb vram so in later years I still have some buffer. Plus that miniled screen is great and so bright. Def notice the haloing on dark backgrounds when the screen is in multi zone config but it's an easy fix by changing to single zone. The laptop is fast and very well built. I'd definitely recommend it. If you feel the 4070 is enough and you want to save 700, then yeah go for the lower spec. Just a great laptop. Only gripe is AMD CPUs would have so much better impact on battery.

Different people value different things. As a former legion 7i and now a razer blade 16 owner I can assure you both brands are great in their own way, but focus on different things. You normally don't buy razer if you want absolute best performance or the best price. You do it if you value a certain look.
Lenovo on the other hand offers a much better cooling solution and normally a better price to perfomance value (questionable with current legion 9 prices though...)
My point: I would not change my blade 16 for a legion 9, even though it certainly performs much better. I don't want the 'gamer look' of a legion. Simple as that.

As a current Legion 7 2021 user, this Legion 9 seems to be stepping in an interesting direction for the flagship Legion lineup, but not quite there yet.
While I appreciate the effort making the top lid unique, it needs to be cleaner. This design is not edgy enough to compete with MSI, or classy enough to compete with the Blade, and the Legion audience tends to prefer a more lowkey look. Maybe this design can be reserved for special editions.
Port placement also seems weird, both the sides and even the back, like they're not evenly spaced out, which is definitely an eye sore for OCD people like me.
The internal water-cooling system looks cool, but I have doubts when this is put into long term usage. Lenovo could even consider implementing an additional removable cooler like those XMGs.
Soldered RAMs is another turn-off for me. Removability of parts has always been part of Lenovo laptops, maybe this a temporary solution for that internal cooling, but hopefully they'll figure out another way without soldering the RAMs in later versions.
Perhaps when RTX5000 series arrive, I'll jump on one of these Legion 9s if they've made these improvements.

I woukld not mind having one...I would like to see a similar packge with AMD inside...just to not have to use my laptop with a fire extinguisher at hand everytime I "fire up" a game

Sound damping would be contradictory to everything a superlight, thin, and powerful laptop is about. They add thickness and would retain heat like crazy.

if they want to compete with other brands like razer and alienware, the price should be more reasonable than the rest of the brands while maintaining all important ports/functions on a laptop and ofc, quality

Please help me, I am confused between Legion 9i and M3 Pro Max 36 GB 1TB varaint. I have no problem regarding the price, and both the OS are ok for me.
I use a few VM for ethical hacking apart from these I program and also do video edits.
Please recommend which one will be worth.

I just wish they would skip the numpad and make a mostly normal tkl-style keyboard.
