    More laptop brands need to consider this I/O layout... all the essential ports at the back are amazing.

      @TrusteftTech ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thee funny thing is, this was very common 20-30 years ago. From half to all the ports being in the back. I don't know why it slowly changed over the last 20 years.

      Some reviewers ding laptops cuz "it's hard to get at them." No, it's not. If I'm in 100% mobile mode I'm not using hardly any ports. If I'm plugged in, then I get set up and then I'm done. I am with @kabodanki. One or two USB ports on the side would be nice (thumb drives and maybe a mouse).

    I have this exact laptop and I can get 4-5 hours of battery life with normal web browsing, TH-cam, email work. I change it to quiet mode (keeps fans from spinning up taking power), then also use the Windows Battery Saver option. I changed the default CPU max (windows power savings) on battery to 99% so it never uses the max CPU power draw. That is the only things I do and I can go for a LONG time on battery.

    • @TechTesters
      @TechTesters  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll see if that helps. If that's the case then I think they really need to consider adding a proper battery mode.

    This was one of the better laptop reviews I've seen. Hit all the right points. Thank you! I've been considering either this or a Razer Blade 16 and I think I'll go with the Lenovo. Doesn't look as nice (I'm not into the gamer aesthetic and don't love the camo look of the carbon lid) but for the price difference I'm in.

    Thank you so much for doing a review on this laptop. I'm considering purchasing it as a replacement for the one I currently have which is an MSI GE76 Raider with an RTX 3080 Ti and i9 12900HK. I wanted the next Gen processor with a RTX 4000 series laptop and this seemed perfect for what I wanted. I just didn't know what it was like compared to other laptops. So your review hit all the questions I had for it.

    Thank you for this excellent review. That certainly is a nice laptop. I agree that the display is very nice. You did quite thorough testing of this laptop and bring up many important considerations. I agree that SSDs in RAID offer nothing of benefit. I wonder how the performance of the laptop might have improved if you substituted your own choice for the SSD instead. On another note, CES will open up further opportunities for you and your team.

    I feel like having a 3200x2000 resolution on a tiny 16" screen is...overkill, I got a lenovo legion 7 and I don't run it on the native resolution ever, it pushes the GPU too much into heating too much, I just use 1920x1200 to keep the 16:10 format. That said it's good that the laptop is capable of a bigger resolution if someone wants to hook it up to a monitor to take advantage of that 2560x1600 resolution.

    • @StefanAlexandruGeogloman
      @StefanAlexandruGeogloman ปีที่แล้ว

      If you hook it up to an external monitor you can use whatever resolution you want, doesn't matter what resolution the laptop's display has...

    • @TechTesters
      @TechTesters  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Like Stefan above me says: Laptop display has nothing to do with an external monitor you might connect. A 1080p laptop can usually drive a 1440p or 4K monitor just fine as well.
      As for overkill. 1600p would have been fine imho, but you definitely notice the extra sharpness of the 2000p display. And it doesn't really change the GPU heat output either in many games as they're still GPU bound.

    • @Mdot555

    Great video! I still find very high end laptops like this one very hard to justify in general, especially when you look at battery life. If you are in some coffee shop to actually justify the portability feature you need to find a spot close to a power outlet anyway. I was expecting much more than 2 hours with the dedicated GPU off. if it was at least capable of 3-3.5 h maybe it's recommendable, but 2h is so little that any casual usage outside home require external power which is a shame.
    As I said the review is great, the laptop not so much. If you use it at home then why not having a slightly cheaper desktop pc and an affordable $1000-1200 laptop with decent battery life for the life on the go.

    • @TechTesters
      @TechTesters  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! High-end laptops do have some very specific use cases. I've heard from people that are on the go a lot with access to power (like truck drivers), kids that split their time between two houses and so on. But I agree that for many people a nice desktop + a super light work laptop will make more sense.

    Nice review! Laptop lid finishing looks cool. As for battery live Ryzen 7000 series mobile would definately improved it, they are more efficient, Raptor Lake mobile are too power hungry. But Lenovo equiped it with two chargers and 140W one is much more convenient for transporting so they somehow mitigate battery life issue.

    • @itsacookie1

      The Intel version has better battery life this time. The ryzen sucks too much power to maintain high clocks.

    • @alxmukhin
      @alxmukhin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@itsacookie1 Since Legion 9i is not available with Ryzen it's strange to claim that Intel version has better battery life. "ryzen sucks too much power to maintain high clocks" is even more weird because Zen 4 outperforms Raptor Lake when they are working with the same power limit especially at low power.

    • @griffin1366
      @griffin1366 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryzen has higher idle power draw so pick your poison. How many cores is the Ryzen part as well? The 13980HX is 24 cores.

    • @alxmukhin
      @alxmukhin ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, Dragon Range has higher idle power consumption due to its chiplet configuration, but what about power consumption under load? In this review PC Mark 10 wad used for battery life assessment. Does it measure only idle power? As for core count Intel has 24 cores but they are not equal. Only 8 are high performance and 16 are so called "efficient" using different architecture with reduced cache and lowered frequencies which also lacks Hyper Threading capability. While AMD offers up to 16 equal cores in Dragon Range which allows easily compete with Intel's 24 cores in Raptor Lake.

    Dual chargers? That's a great idea. Keep the 330W at the home desk setup and the 140W in your bag for travel. Nice. I would love to upgrade my current Legion to this model, although my savings account disagrees. Flicker could be an issue and that lower color accuracy. The real killer though is battery life. I'd never want a laptop I couldn't get a solid 4 hours on for regular work and 2 for heavier use. There is no reason to get a laptop if it's always tied to the wall.

      I have this laptop ( not for long). I'm picky about screens and I can say this noticably doesn't cover the full sRGB spectrum. It's lacking punch. The greens and oranges are vibrant but that's about it.
      Also the dimming is controlled in a way that reduces blooming by a color gradient that basically is gray gray gray all the way to the left and the black. So solid black is pure black but everything else in between is a shade of grey. So in some ways blacks are portrayed worse than typical IPS.

    It is a few years before we see ARM-based gaming machines but I suspect they will revolutionise that industry assuming gaming devs support them. Getting 6 hours of gaming and 12+ hours of SOT doing the usual stuff would show how far Intel is behind with efficiency per watt. The poor SOT on this makes it only practical for desktop use. You would still be better off supplementing this with an ultrabook for lighter work.
    Other than that, this is solid but expensive and I have abandoned Lenovo many years ago due to poor QC, so though I suspect they have improved in the interim, I am not willing to return when there are great alternatives.
    Thanks!

      They do. Even in quiet mode.
      And the fans aren't variable speed like Razer or MacBook.
      They don't start low rpm and ramp up to 1800rpm. They start at 1800rpm.
      Those old style fans that spin the opposite way for a second when they start up. Probably 12v.
      Very pronounced sound when they start. ( They do sound good once they are running)
