    There are many naw sayers who are in disbelief of the beautiful relationship the two of you have. I know otherwise. I too had a similar marriage. He passed three years ago and I cant imagine finding that love again. Thank you for sharing your lives. In a way watching the two of you keeps him alive.

    Not the A Hole.
    As a parent, it would not bother me if another parent came back to my house to pick up a toy. I am super understanding that people are forgetful, and I understand that kids, especially forget things. If I did not answer the text, they sent before hand, I would not be upset with him coming over to get the toy.
    I never think it’s a big deal to take a moment out of your day to help a child feel better.
    I do not work from home, so I do not have the same do not disturb moments at my house. But I don’t think her text after the issue or the way she was acting in the moment was kind or appropriate.

    Tbh, I had a feeling this might happen after your TSA experience. I get pings on my radar constantly while watching your videos that alert me to positive changes that could come about from your videos. It's like my ears perk up when I hear your struggles given from such compassionate and sensible commentary. I just know sometimes that your words are not falling on deaf ears and that change is likely. That's why your videos cause such an uproar from your followers. We want to live in a world where everyone has the same access to services and we know this channel is making a difference. I hope you know just by your being who you are and just by loving each other and being so intelligent and centered, that you are making a tsunami of difference in our world. Ty.

      That's called a cop out. You want to express your emotions and your responsibility as a loving human, but you do that in terms of something that doesn't actually have any true consequences to your faults or lack of commitment. Everyone loves animals, it's easy, it looks good. Having an animal is the definition of having your cake and eating it too. I do give props to the people who choose to fill the void of a child by having an animal as a proxy.

    This is a HUGE WIN for you both!! As I believe awareness and acceptance, education and needed changes are at the core of your channel. I'd say this is just amazing, and going to make such a huge difference to the lives of so many people and families. How many people, including my family, who avoid travel for so many reasons related to my son's disabilities. I will say, our TSA experiences have been very respectful and kind, we do understand the challenges they face, but it is so great to hear how open TSA is to making changes, and doing a better job for folks with disabilities. For sure, it is a policy problem, and just no knowing what to do, not an employee problem. This is so nice to hear.

    As the mother of a 4 year old boy who is very attached to his stuffed animals, I think both parties were probably in the wrong, but it’s hard to know for sure without more details.
    I think it would be okay to pop over to the person’s house if they lived close and knew them well, and depending on the time of day. But otherwise it’s definitely a little forceful to show up at their house during work hours, and then let yourself in after the person said no.
    However, I think most parents are understanding in this situation and wouldn’t have made such a big deal out of it as this working mom did. I think most parents would have thought that it was a little rude, but wouldn’t have been so aggressive about it.

    I know that the child was very young, but it is never too early to begin teaching (in ways relatable to a child) the principles of detachment, patience and empathy for others. Obviously, you don’t try to start teaching these principles at the moment the child is freaking out, but rather day today and by your own example.

  • @leeannpeterson2719
    @leeannpeterson2719 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm so glad (& super impressed) that the TSA watched your video and is going to make so many essential changes so quickly as a result of your sharing the horrible experiences you went through. Your willingness to put your private lives onto such public platforms (podcasts, books, you tube videos, instagram, public talks, fundraisers, etc.), & your ability to get your voices heard, will allow you to help change the world for countless others, going through similar situations, whose voices would probably never be heard. So, thank you both for all the good you are doing. A lot of problems, like the fingerprinting and photo fiascos at the TSA office are simply the result of people not being aware of all the different accessibility issues people have. So, educating people, by making them aware of accessibility issues they never even thought about before, can go a long way toward encouraging them to bring about the changes needed.
    As, for the "Am I the Asshole," segment, which is the most Junkyard Mayhem-y title ever, I think you should turn that title into a regular segment of your podcast. It would be a brief debate about issues, on which you each hold opposing opinions (lighthearted ones, we don't want to drive you to divorce, by getting into too serious disagreements). You could each state your case, then read the feedback from the comments the next week, to decide who (if anyone) was the asshole.🤣😂
    As for this episode, I disagree with you both. The father was trying to prevent his wife from having to stress out over their kids meltdown about the stuffed animal. That meltdown could have escalated into days of screaming, crying, and tantrums. The child wasn't going to let it go, or forget about it, and just drift off to a peaceful sleep. Sure, you guys might have been easygoing calm kids that could lose your favorite teddy bear without losing your minds, at that age, but most kids are not that chill. So, the Dad had to try to see if they were home. He wasn't coming to visit. He was stripping by to pick up something his son accidentally left behind. That lady was being the asshole. Not the guy. I think she even knew the stuffed toy was left behind, because it was sitting on her son's bed. She's a parent. She should've realized they would come back for it. But she tells him that she doesn't have time to look for it? It was in plain view. She was just power tripping. Her rudeness and snotty attitude make it clear she is neither a real friend, nor the type of person they should leave their child with again. In my opinion she's the only asshole.
    That said, I don't answer my door to people who don't call first and I don't always answer my phone. So I do get her point. But she should've put on noise cancelling headphones and simply ignored the door. That's all she had to do. But once you open the door, especially in a situation like this one, there is no way to tell the man and his distraught child that you are holding the stuffed animal hostage until a time that better suits you. If you open the door to tell them to go away, good luck preventing them from coming in.

As for the A-hole dad, he completely overstepped boundaries & should’ve taken the opportunity to teach his kid about disappointment & being flexible- unfortunately he only taught his kid to overstep boundaries to get what you want/think you need. …However the other parent overstepped by not responding in a gracious manner & being accusatory & likely now the friendship is destroyed.

    Shane, I mean this in a kind way so I hope it comes out that way. I am so glad that you put yourself out there. People who have bodies that aren't the "norm" are often thought to be less then intelligently just because of the way they look or the fact that your voice is different. You are incredibly intelligent and the fact that you can laugh at yourself is huge! Love you both! Keeping rocking the world! People need to be educated!

    As a mother of 3 and a grandma of 1, your "am I the asshole" reddit convo reminds me of the difficulty of parenthood. No one is an asshole, but he lost the opportunity to teach his child how to deal with disappointment.

    I haven't experienced cuteness aggression that i can recall but if i get very excited they i will feel my eyes fill with tears. For example i am deep into bingeing a tv show and a first kiss just happened or something, if i am giving someone a present and i am watching them open it, if a favorite social media person interacts with me in so way, if i see something that is just absolutely beautiful like getting to a waterfall after a long hike....i just get so unbelievably excited that my who body tenses up and quivers and then i start to cry. It happens to me more often than not 😅

    Thank you ask advocating change. I recently went to our Buffalo NY TSA office for my TSA appointment and asked how I could get my son’s fingerprints who has an SCI and was told it wouldn’t be a problem. However getting the fingerprint box to reach to him and extend his hand looked very difficult if not impossible. I hope when I eventually take him the iPads will be in the office. Thank you so much!

    1. You guys are RAD for getting the TSA's attention in a non-combative, informative way. I personally learn a lot from hearing your perspectives on accessibility.
    2. Again I LOVE THE DUMPSTER DIVE - I get cute aggression every day when I see my cats.
    3. Re: Am I the A**hole - this was a tricky one, but I believe the father in this situation was in the wrong. Assuming this all took place in the afternoon because it was 'naptime' - if you're not getting a response - don't just show up... learn how to "read the room". No response = not a good time. Having an uninvited visitor would be aggravating to me - especially if I were working at home. What if the neighbor/friend was on a zoom call? ALSO - this would be a prime time to teach a valuable emotional lesson to your child on how to self-soothe, or find an alternative way to calm down for a nap... Then later, at the appropriate time - show the child that they can calmly acquire a missing and beloved item without feeding into a tantrum frenzy. In my opinion, fueling a tantrum or childhood anxiety, by reacting in an anxious way yourself, only shows them that their behavior is acceptable...which it is not. The neighbor/friend didn't need to lash out, but I'm still on her side.
    4. Hannah - your wavy hair looks great, your skin is flawless and I love the lip color.
    5. Shane - your humor is flawless and I'm impressed with your podcast hosting skills.

    I have an autistic son who absolutely could not sleep without his musical seahorse when he was a toddler. I'm definitely on the side of the father who took his son to get the stuffed animal. When we moved everything was put in the garage. That first night in our house we had to search through lots of boxes and thankfully found the seahorse because he would not have gone to sleep without it.

    Because I have a child who is very attached to a stuffy, I can see the blind desperation of the parent. Everything else seems trivial when your child wont stop crying. I can also see the side of the "work at home" professional who is just trying to get their work done and is interrupted several times, ending in your neighbor coming into your home and ruining your concentration for the third time. Tough one!

    • @smessner2414
      @smessner2414 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree with you. A child who needs their stuffy or blanket in order to relax is a big deal.
      I think they are both wrong. When taking a favorite toy out of the house, you need to be certain that you have it when you return. (Or another option is to have a duplicate). It also seems that the person who was working from home could have taken a short break, located the toy and given it to the owner, or arranged a time to meet.

    Just wait until you have a kid, Shane. My husband never had cute aggression either, but when we had our first son all he said all the time was "I just wanna bite him!" he would playfully bite him lol but he of course never hurt him. But seriously when it's your own kid you may want to bite them :P

    When I was very little I had a book of Beatrix Potter stories and I would scratch at the drawing of the baby mouse being cradled by its mum in 'The Tale of Two Bad Mice'. It was just too cute, I couldn't handle it and I needed it gone.

    I wonder if the narrator could have also helped his son by, w/ compassion on him while he’s crying, explain that he forgot his favorite sleepy dumbo and that it is such a bummer but also a good way to learn to keep track of him next time. If he is 4, he is able to learn that a lot more than a 2 or 3 year old and I agree with you both that waiting a couple hours to respect the other family’s boundaries would be a good move!!
