I'm an aquatic entomologist, so I really got into the dumpster dive on dragonflies! The labial mask on the dragonfly nymph is equipped with palps (that bear teeth). When the labium shoots out to catch prey - the palps grab the pray and bring it back in to the mouth, where the mandibles and maxillae rip it to pieces. Pretty brutal, but fascinating at the same time! Adult dragonflies will not bite humans, BTW.
I’m an aquarist now, but in ninth grade in my aquatic biology class we caught a few small fish and some dragonfly nymphs and one of them started eating the fish alive 😅they’re wild
I SWEAR - I rarely comment on anything, but Shane’s “allergy denial” prompted me to comment (b/c I never believed in seasonal allergies either...until they got me). The funny thing is, as I began to write my comment, I had the feeling of déjà vu! I am almost CERTAIN that Shane DID talk about this last year, and I COMMENTED...and we BOTH forgot 😂
Hi from Missouri. It has been a really bad tick season here too. My aunt's friend found a baby raccoon and brought it to her. We are raising the baby raccoon, he is able to hold the bottle with his paws. He makes such cute sounds. He fell asleep on my shoulder after eating, so adorable.
My father in law also had a cute baby raccoon that grew into a very wild big raccoon. They have very sharp claws & teeth & are VERY destructive. And no one will take them once they are grown & you can not let them go out in the wild at that point, they will not survive.
everything about your podcast is absolute gold, i look forward to it every week. and, thanks to you, dragonflies are now also my new favourite insect. all the best from vienna ♡
The parents need to make the son design a presentation that educates and present it to the entire school & staff along with a public apology at the presentation to his sister.
In cottage country north of Toronto, EVERYONE brakes for turtles! People even have bumper stickers that say "I brake for turtles". We're doing our best to try to save all that we can!!! SO many roads because we're trying to share space with them! THANK YOU for helping them!!!!!
Exactly. This could of been a valuable lesson to teach both their kids. But they failed miserably and taught both of them a terrible lesson. That its ok to abandon their children over something so little and that not having teeth is a huge deal and should be kept a secret. Hopefully someday they dont end up in the same situation where their kids try to pawn their kids off to them over every little thing. I hope the son feels loved by the grandparents atleast to make up for his mothers lack of. How do you expect him to be a good person when you yourself are so cold. 😢 i have a feeling the son would be a better big brother if he was treated good at home. Kids often process and cope with being treated badly by treating others badly in return unfortunately. Most of them grow out of it and realize it only makes them feel worse.
Re. "Am I the asshole?". I can understand the parents sending the son away overnight or at most a few days so they can focus on comforting their daughter, and so that everyone has a chance to calm down and think about what has happened. I think that the son should be brought back home as quickly as possible and required to make amends as best as possible, especially to issue a public apology to his sister that is visible to her friends, schoolmates, etc. For the parents to go so far as to be permanently reject their son and ask the grandparents to take over raising him is going too far.
I just recently subscribed to your channel and have been watching for a few weeks now after having found you originally when you were on Shawn and Andrew's podcast Couple Things years ago. This episode just had me cracking up and I was legit laughing out loud. You guys are just too cute and are so great together and overall.
I am too, and the tick doesn't have to be attached for a long time to transmit disease. It's affected my whole adult life. I'm sorry to hear you are a Lyme patient too.
I know this is probably an odd podcast to say this on with all the talk of tick picking haha but I just wanted to let you two know that listening to you guys and watching your videos has brought me comfort for years. You guys are my go to safe space for feel goods and you're just so lovely. Thank you for being my unintentional emotional support system. 😂
My name is Sally - and a dragonfly's "sallying" method of catching food definitely suits me!!! My husband cooks and brings the food to the table and I grab it and eat it!!!😮😂😂 Such a great episode, guys... keep on dumpster diving, Hannah, and I laugh out loud at Shane's crazy comments and interjections! Love you 2. 😂❤
Hi from the UK 🇬🇧 😊 Single mum here with 2 adult sons, both autistic and complex difficulties. My youngest had behaviour problems when he was young. I hugged him tighter and taught them both "family first" We stuck together and got through it ❤ Love your posts...keep on keeping on! X
Hey!!😊 One of my sons and his wife have a Labradoodle. Around three yrs ago when I was house sitting for them, I found one of those lumps under her chin. They hadn't lnown that she had it. Ater a vet visit, they were told what it was. She had it removed soon after. I had been very concerned that it was cancerous, but no, just a fatty cyst. She has since had a couple more. Hugs from little ole me in NZ🌹🌹 🙋🏼♀️🌏
I hope Cloe feels better soon, my labradoodle, Koda, isn't feeling well right now either. I am enjoying your channel so much and look forward to every episode.
Once again, you guys had me laughing out loud in the middle of work! 😆 Shane and the tick parade and Hannah's bubbles 🤣🤣🤣🤣 This episode was comedy gold you two! ❤️
I watched a massive dragonfly eat a big horsefly just like a burrito. I was less than 6” away. It held the fly with its front legs and ate the head in one bite and then continued to take several bites until fully consumed. It then cleaned its feeding feet. And yes, I could hear the crunch.
You guys always put a smile on my face haha I love you guys! This weekend has been busy for me and I'd love to tell the world I got married on the 29th and my 31st birthday was the 30th and my husband 33rd birthday was the 28th, the same as Shane's. Happy late birthday Shane 🎉😊
The ability to predict where something is going (like another bug) based on where has been is called representational momentum. We, humans, do this, too. We experience this prediction both in vision and audition. Basically, we use information about the motion trajectory, what direction it's going, is velocity, the consistency of the velocity, the context of the object, etc. to predict where we think the object is going so that we can potentially interact with that object. It's a really cool cognitive/neurological feature of being an animal. I know this stuff because I study it, auditory representational momentum (I'm a PhD student and training to be a scientist who specializes in sound localization and motion perception).
Hannah thank you so much for yet again teaching me crap I never knew I wanted to know. Seriously the DD was awesome and yalls humor...top notch love you guys❤
Regarding the AITA: I think its okay to send the son away for a weekend while the parents calm themselves and aren't punishing or discussing while extremely emotionally charged. Make a gameplan, have him come back, and calmly discuss his actions & consequences etc. However just abandoning him forever is so insane 😂 Also, therapy for all!🎉
I agree. And maybe they can still take responsibility for their child and not put the long travel to school on the grandparents too. But sending him away and disowning him is a terrible lesson for not only the son, but their daughter too. Teaching her that abondoning your kid is how you fix something. And im sure the daughter is influenced by the parents when it comes to how insecure she is about her teeth. If they make a huge deal about it of course she will too. They could of taken this situation and taught both their children a valuable lesson but they didnt. It makes me so sad that there are children out their with these sad excuses for parents. Your kid makes a little mistake and you use it as an excuse to no longer be responsible for them. Now the grandparents gotta raise your kid? Wow. It just shows why the brother is so cold, the parents are too. (I dont actually think the son is that cold, im sure his sister embarrassed him before too)
This was an excellent podcast! I do need to point out though, that it was very difficult to watch while I ate. I first started watching it while I was eating breakfast. Hearing the details about the wood ticks was rather gross, though, hearing about the tick parade was hilarious! I continued watching your podcast later while I was eating lunch. I laughed so hard when Hannah was talking about the dragonfly nymphs and the things that Shane was joking about that I almost choked on my food. You guys are wonderful!
There is a great tool for removing ticks-called…’Ticked off!’ As a school nurse, pet owner and living in the Northeast-it has worked quickly & easily every time!
It's kind of odd that since you guys have so many turtle hatchlings in your area every year, that there hasn't been something put in place for them. That really hurt my heart. 😢
In my area, we have turtle crossing signs where all of our retention ponds are, but you can't really see them crossing at nighttime, so I'm guessing that is when they get hit.
@@Katie-hh9euWe also have those in town. I think they’re a great idea, but I’m not sure many drivers actually proceed though those areas with any sort of extra caution. 🙁
My sister lives in the mountains of California. She had a turtle show up one day. He stayed for several years then one day left. She said it was very sweet!
I really thought that the dragon fly dumpster dive was going to be boring, but I loved it! It was so informative and highly entertaining thanks to Shane!
Dragonflies are believed to be a sign of new beginnings, hope, and change. In many cultures, they are seen as symbols of strength, courage, and happiness. So hopefully something wonderful is coming your way ❤
Where I live we have toads trying to get to a pond. We have notices warning of toads crossing. And each year, a net was put alongside the road. Toads come to the fence and stop and people go along with buckets and give the toads bucket rides across the road!
The reason why oxygen levels limit insect growth is that insects breathe through their skin. They have little pores all around their exoskeletons that pull in and expel air through a series of tubes inside their bodies. This is a lot less efficient than respiration via lungs or gills, because as size increases, the ratio of volume to surface area increases exponentially. Eventually, they reach a point where they physically can't have enough pores to inhale the volume of oxygen they would need. If a greater percentage of the air they're breathing is oxygen, they get more oxygen per breath, so they can grow bigger.
Your mention of scooping dragonflies out of your pool reminds me of one of your earliest videos "Hannah Saves All The Animals" or something like that 😂 your love for all animals couldn't be more evident. Touches my heart every time.
With the starfish story, Hannah you did just paraphrase Shane 😂 ya’ll are such a married couple ❤. I would have 100% reacted the same if not worse… probably worse 😂 than Hannah with that tick 😱 I would freak out and feel itchy all day!
I absolutely looove drangonflies! My favourite story from childhood is about the beauty of dragonflies and I wanted to get a tattoo with a dragonfly. So I super enjoyed the deep dive.
Am I permissed ( or, eh permised? 😬😄 ) to tell you both that you are wickedly hilarious?! I've been a fan or follower for years. I don't know if follower is the right word. It makes me feel like a creep. It sounds like saying a lurker or something haha! All kidding aside, I'm happy I finally found the courage to tell you guys I think you rock. Fatty deposits make me hungry too so I've gotta go now 👾💩💃💃💃
My sister lives in TN. Her husband had a tick lodged into his tummy the same way. The doctors and nurses could not get it out til one doc came in with dental floss and got it out that way!! So that could be helpful to someone who gets a tick in the future!
I'm gonna love it when you guys start reading fairytales and fables to your children lol!!😂😂 Maybe you guys should start practicing on us lol I can see Hannah telling the stories building hopes and dreams and Shane then explaining how life really is.
I should know better than to be drinking anything while listening to your podcasts. Yesterday I was in the car and between the tick parade, and the jet propulsion I was trying to not spit my drink out in laughter but instead choked on my drink trying to get it down. I’m dead…almost literally. 😂😂😂 You both don’t disappoint… ❤
Great video! Love the deep dive! Dragonfly’s are awesome and are spiritually known for being a messenger of the Divine! I think the parents are missing a great opportunity to make the brother do many chores! 😁 they need to find some balance and unconditional Love!
I get it Shane! Allergies are the worst! Here in Ohio, we have very high tree pollen today, moderate grass...our cars are caked with green dust! I have sneeze fests everytime I breath any outside air. It is as Shane said "suffering" because you look out the window and it's beautiful outside but you cannot go out because the air is poison...ticks everywhere. Such a great episode guys, cannot wait to see the next IVF update!
I was just visiting my sister in Florida (I live in Washington). We took a walk around a lake, and I saw a highlighter pink dragonfly! They are called roseate skimmers. Pretty cool!
Hi u2....😊 It is so hot here today and the pollen is HIGH as an Elephants eye ( oh no thats not quite right it's affecting me brain now ) And I am streaming !😢NOSE EYES THROAT EARS 😭🤧🥹👃🦻👁 So I is lying on the bed watching you two through my tears and trying not to complain cos it's so lovely to be warm and the humming bird moth has returned to my garden this year which is a rarity in this country and delight evenn if you don't usually like moths ! I love animals too. I told my daughter that I even care for slugs. She laughed and said “not slugs mom”: she thought there is too many animals between a cute little chipmunk and slugs.
Countryside Austria is the same with frogs - spring time is dead frogs on the street time (but adult ones that are looking for a good place to lay their eggs)
One of my favorite podcasts, Ologies, has an episode on ticks and the theme of that episode became "Check your crevices!" Actually I think you both would really like this podcast, every episode they interview a different expert and "ask smart people stupid questions", from the moon to cats to body image to trees, one of the few science podcasts I've found that cusses lol Also I definitely googled "dragonfly larvae catching prey" and that's terrifying lol For the reddit post, I don't think they're the assholes for sending him away at first, like I get separating the kids and needing some time to think about the situation, but yeah making the grandparents take care of him and cutting ties is extreme. Take a few days but then you need to deal with your own child.
Okies so firstly, I revoke my wish that dragonflies were bigger 😅 That parent dilemma? Seems really extreme but I wonder if there's a backstory that makes what the kid did the final straw, because at 16 a kid should absolutely know what lines not to cross
I'm an aquatic entomologist, so I really got into the dumpster dive on dragonflies! The labial mask on the dragonfly nymph is equipped with palps (that bear teeth). Wow thats super interesting to think about
It's always fun every week when they talk about a topic and Shane goes completely off the rails.😂

It's half the reason why I watch these two!
So much fun!

Thank you guys for how consistent your content has been. I always look forward to your Wed videos and Monday grub bags!
Shane was on a roll this episode, so funny!!
I love when Hannah gets tickled. 😂❤. I love her laugh 😊

I lost it and nearly choked on my water when Shane said "bubble time." 🤣🤣🤣
One of the best episodes. The dragon fly info was hilarious.
Hannah should do a deep dive on seasonal allergies!
I can feel the cuteness through the screen
Aww! As evil and ugly as they are when grown. They seem so cute as babies! Please make a video lol.
please consider bringing to a wildlife rehab, they may be cute as babies but they are wild animals
16 is not a kid. It's not understandable. You think the daughter should be punished by having to change schools? Or she should leave? WTF.
My father in law also had a cute baby raccoon that grew into a very wild big raccoon. They have very sharp claws & teeth & are VERY destructive.
And no one will take them once they are grown & you can not let them go out in the wild at that point, they will not survive.

When you add a baby to your junk yard mayhem !!!!!!!
It will be non stop laughter.
I ❤ Wednesdays. You all made hump day better!
I loved the background on dragonflies! As a side note, dragonflies are thought to be an omen of change coming if you believe that!
Oh my gosh, I laughed so hard at the dragonfly story. You all are so funny.
Mayhem and education once again you held my attention. I learned something new, thanks
I can relate to the snapping turtles crossing the road. Seeing so many hit by cars is sad, but there is only so much you can do.
Many, many laugh out loud moments in this podcast!
I am going to tell everyone I know about dragonflies aggressively farting out water to propel themselves. One of my favorite episodes!
I was just visiting my sister in Florida (I live in Washington). We took a walk around a lake, and I saw a highlighter pink dragonfly! They are called roseate skimmers. Pretty cool!
Hi u2....😊
It is so hot here today and the pollen is HIGH as an Elephants eye ( oh no thats not quite right it's affecting me brain now ) And I am streaming !😢NOSE EYES THROAT EARS 😭🤧🥹👃🦻👁
So I is lying on the bed watching you two through my tears and trying not to complain cos it's so lovely to be warm and the humming bird moth has returned to my garden this year which is a rarity in this country and delight evenn if you don't usually like moths !
ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE EH?
Hope the jabs are going 👍.
Love weds as I get to watch your banter. Can't bear it.😂😂😂😂
Stay cool.

Tick parade🦟 how can YOU stand it Hannah 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂and 🛀😂 thrump 😅😅😅😅😅😅
Love Dumpster dive. Hannah is Off The Chain with it.
I love animals too. I told my daughter that I even care for slugs. She laughed and said “not slugs mom”: she thought there is too many animals between a cute little chipmunk and slugs.
This episode was especially mayhemy and I’m here for it 😂❤
Shunning is cruel.
This was a really FUN one guys! 😍 Loved the Dragonfly dumpster dive 👏 The AITA segment was a doozy! 🙀 Xx
Shane on dragonflies: They probably know what I'm thinking right now...😂😂
Shane: “Up your catch rate, guys” 😂😂😂
Countryside Austria is the same with frogs - spring time is dead frogs on the street time (but adult ones that are looking for a good place to lay their eggs)
Spiritual meaning of dragonflies; change, adaptability and self-realization 💯🙌❤️❤️ New beginnings, fresh start
One of my favorite podcasts, Ologies, has an episode on ticks and the theme of that episode became "Check your crevices!" Actually I think you both would really like this podcast, every episode they interview a different expert and "ask smart people stupid questions", from the moon to cats to body image to trees, one of the few science podcasts I've found that cusses lol
Also I definitely googled "dragonfly larvae catching prey" and that's terrifying lol
For the reddit post, I don't think they're the assholes for sending him away at first, like I get separating the kids and needing some time to think about the situation, but yeah making the grandparents take care of him and cutting ties is extreme. Take a few days but then you need to deal with your own child.
I love watching dragonflies, thank you. Fascinating. Try sitting in a wild meadow.... mind snakes and ticks though!
Heeey guys.. Been a hot minute.. Hope all is well 😊😊 love from new Zealand
Okies so firstly, I revoke my wish that dragonflies were bigger 😅
That parent dilemma? Seems really extreme but I wonder if there's a backstory that makes what the kid did the final straw, because at 16 a kid should absolutely know what lines not to cross
When I lived in Courtenay, BC, Canada.
Years ago I had a dragonfly sitting on my living room ceiling.
I was surprised at how big they are.
