You should do The Prayer next to see just how good Mitch is.
Yes I can believe he hits A5!
Kevin has solos in 20ish songs... which is roughly 10%. Definitely has a nice voice, just too important as the beatboxer generally.
He also sings background vocals for brief periods between beat boxing
In addition to occasionally singing solo, the beatboxer is a concert level cello player and sometimes plays it in their performances.
The beat boxer sings almost as high as the counter tenor and he is an amazing singer as well as a professional Cello player. He plays piano and the sax. He has a doctorate degree. Kevin is amazing. Pentatonic is amazing with 3 Grammy and a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. I loved your reactions. Thank you.
not a doctorate degree. He graduated pre med and east Asian studies in Yale.
And he actually sings higher, just using falsetto.
Correct. Mitch has said Kevin songs higher than her can
Watch/listen to Imagine and you’ll hear Kevin the beatboxer singing higher than Mitch. He blew everyone away!
Mitch is a counter tenor, Kirstie is a mezzo soprano, Scott is baritone, Avi is base, Kevin is a tenor, beatboxer, and cello player.
Mitch is an amazing tenor/counter tenor! Such an angelic voice!
Here are a few terms to add to your Pentatonix lexicon... "Mitch Slapped" is the expression on your face when you first hear Mitch's voice soar into the stratosphere. "Wall of Sound" is when they all come together and belt their faces off. "Upgrade" is what we call a "cover" for a regular band because they always make it their own.
The Sound of Silence was one they owned!
added!
You might enjoy their cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody!
You will have to start distorting the screen of their faces, to get it past their record lable's copyright rules when playing their music to reacting to them.
We are learning how much of a pain it is to deal with their label. thank you!
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast There is ONE fantastic Pentatonix performance that seems to need nothing in the way of video distortion, because the copyright isn't owned by RCA (Pentatonix's record label). It's called "The Wizard of Ahhhs," and the copyright belongs to Todrick Hall, another guy who grew up in Arlington, Texas, where the trio (Mitch, Scott, and Kirstie) are from. Todrick seems to be more interested in publicity than in stomping all over innocent reactors.
The only problem with "Wizard of Ahhhs" is that it's an homage to the original movie from 1939, _The Wizard of Oz,_ starring Judy Garland, and if you haven't seen the movie the homage doesn't make any sense. If you HAVE seen the movie, though, you will absolutely love "The Wizard of Ahhhs." This was the first thing they put out where Kirstie took the the lead, and what a lead it was! She played all three major female characters: Dorothy Gale, Glinda the Good Witch, and The Wicked Witch of the West Side, and she played them to perfection.
Todrick posted "Wizard of Ahhhs" to his TH-cam channel just two months after Kirstie's twenty first birthday: th-cam.com/video/QkVeKb2igrg/w-d-xo.html
YES!!!! So happy you're reacting to this masterpiece!!
Thanks for the info! We're going to do more!
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast Looking forward to seeing you guys go on this journey!
The beatboxer Kevin does sing. He has an amazing tenor voice. Check out Mary Did You Know, Imagine, or Amazing Grace to hear him.
The beatbopper sang lead in Amazing Grace.
The Oger’s Mitch-slap is exactly what we Pentahoics dream of finding! The look of complete and utter bewilderment, followed by the realization that, “oh my God that really is his voice!” Is just priceless!!He has the voice of an angel. Don’t forget to listen to “Mary did you know?” Great Reaction guys, really enjoyed it! ❤️
I highly recommend their Daft Punk Medley. It won them their first Grammy and was done on a $400 budget in Avi's apartment. 😊
6:47 Ogre - that is called getting "Mitch slapped". Happens to all of us...
There are other really good acapelle-groups out there, but Pentatonix are simply a league of there own. Period.
Full names:
• Blond guy: Scott Hoying.
• Bass: Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee) Kaplan.
• The only woman: Kirstin (also known as Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado.
• Guy with the round hat: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphssis on the first syllable).
• Beatboxer: Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable).
• Avi's replacement: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable).
It never gets old, watching someone experience their first "Mitch-slap".
I suggest "Creep", Daft Punk and Amazing Grace.
Ogre's Mitch-Slap is certainly in the top five of the over 100 reactions (a very conservative estimate) I have ever seen to this song, and it is a contender for number one. Listen to the live version from their first Christmas TV special for confirmation that they really *are* this good. Tens of millions of albums sold, three Grammy awards, 20 million TH-cam subscribers, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame can't be wrong, and as AJ noted, they *are* one of the modern faces of Christmas---eight Christmas albums, including a double platinum album that was the fourth best selling album of 2014 (behind Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, and the soundtrack for _Frozen_ ).
It was an epic Mitch slap. That’s what I love most in a reaction from someone who’s never heard it before. I live for the Mitch slaps.
Loved the "Mitch Slap" on Ogre's face, been awhile since I've seen one.
That's called a "Mitch slap"!!
\Ogre's face\
1st Singer (Blonde Guy) = Scott Hoying, Baritone (also does Bass line when Bass Singer has a lead verse)
2nd Singer (Bearded Guy) = Avi Kaplan, Bass (Left group in 2017 and was replaced by Matt Sallee)
3rd Singer (Women) - Kirstin Maldonado, Soprano (she changes her look and hair color often)
4th Singer (Hat Guy) - Mitch Grassi, Counter Tenor (he changes his look very often)
Beatboxer - Kevin Olusola - Surprise - ALSO sings and has solo verses in some songs - He is also a tenor
Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie have been singing together since High School, and they added Kevin and Avi in 2011 when they auditioned, performed, and won the 3rd season of "The Sing Off".
The bass singer is the only member change.

kirstin is a mezzo-soprano, but all of them have big vocal ranges so the usual classification don't fit. like scott sings everything from bass to baritone to tenor
All great suggestions, and I would add the 90's Dance Remix because I think that's probably the song which best showcases how amazing Kevin's beatboxing is.
added to the list
Not to mention that Kevin (beatboxer) is a world class celloist. His talents are shown in Say Something, Shallow among others.
That list is very close to my favourite songs list.
Just subbed to hear more Pentatonix. Came for the Mitch slap and wasn't disappointed.
Thanks for the sub! We've been adding songs of theirs to our react list!
Their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody is phenomenal. I recommend the official video because it's quite entertaining. Their cover of Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King is great. The "Wall of Sound" in that song is fabulous, and Mitch (Round Hat) hits some amazing high notes.
Oh, you have to review that one. It is amazing.
I concur!!
Best "Mitch Slap" I've seen in a while.
There is a version of this live on their 2016 Christmas special that will show that they are just as good live as recorded. Definately check out Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Punk(Grammy win) and Sound Of Silence. Avi left the group so you will see his replacement, Matt, on their Sound of Silence video. Their original music is great as well.
Avi's solo stuff is great, Change on the Rise particularly.
"The Blonde Guy" (Scott) can cover bass for Avi when he has a solo. He has incredible range.
Nice Mitch slap. To me, this is the ideal introduction to PTX. You get to sample each member. Try Daft Punk Medley for something totally different and equally brilliant.
Nothing I love more than seeing someone's first Mitch Slap!
Mitch-slapped! Love it!
Kevin, the beat boxer does sing on occasion, he also plays a fantastic Cello! Also check out this song live
You all should listen to their Popspring 2016 concert excerpt. They perform three of their original songs and their Michael Jackson medley. Fabulous!!
Oh Ogre...you haven't heard anything yet!!!! They harmonize like no other group, they all have multiple octaves, they will make you cry, make you laugh, and constantly blow your minds!! Oh and they even rap! Daft Punk, Gold, Bohemian Rhapsody, Can't Hold Us, and Evolution of Michel Jackson just to name a few. Warning....you will become a Pentaholic 😉
Ogre wasn't joking. He went and listened to Hallelujah a few times after they were finished recording that night. He definitely cried.
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast I hope he will also look up their live performance from a Christmas special in... 2016 I think, on their channel. Whether for a reaction or just for his own enjoyment. It's possibly better than the official video.
That was his late father's favorite song. You really want to make him cry. LOL
Mitch is a true counter tenor, Scott is a baritone, Kevin is beatboxer/cellist/tenor, Kirstin is a mezzo soprano, and Avi (Ah-vee) is the bass.
Y'all have been "Mitch Slapped" hehe! To me this is by far the best version of Hallelujah. You should react to Bohemian Rhapsody next! Great reaction guys!
on the list
Mitch is a tenor, Kerstin is Soprano, Scott is Baritone, they are a trio and have known each other since the age of 10. Kevin Beatboxer-tenor, Avi Bass - they are Percussion and were hired later
Check out Kevin Olusola (the beatboxer) KOver of "down" by Marion Hill. Not only can he sing, he can SING.
Kevin, the beat boxer, is a pre med graduate and he's also a cellist. Their live performances are out of this world They've won 3 Grammys, the 1st had been their medley of Daft Punk songs.
Not sure if you figured out yet or not that Kevin, the beat boxer, also has the voice of an angel. If you haven’t done it yet check out the Pentatonics version of the official video for “Mary did you know”. Be prepared to possibly stop breathing a couple of times. It is incredible!. Kevin can sing his ass off!
Amazing Grace, The Sound of Silence and Bohemian Rhapsody would be good follow-ups to Hallelujah.
LOL ... classic mitch slap reaction. Look of amazement, jaw on the floor. Loved the look on Ogres face. Never gets old.
Kevin sings in Mary did you know, amazing grace and a few others. He's a cello player as well, and he does is the beatboxing.
The beat boxer, Kevin, does sing. Although its rare. He has solos in Amazing Grace, Mary Do You Know, and Imagine to name a few. When he does, it will know you back in your seat. He is amazing. Also, check his solo stuff like Down. He goes by KO for Kevin Olusula.
Mitch is what's called a counter-tenor. The highest vocal range for a male singer. And Scott (the tall blonde dude) is a Barritone, but he has a massive range, so when the bass (Avi, in this instance) is doing the solo, he takes over the bass line.
LOL and there goes Ogre, getting Mitch-slapped! 😂
If you want a Kevin solo, pick up their cover of "Imagine" by John Lenon. Or the Christmas carol "Mary Did You Know?". Both of them are my favorites with a solo from him.
He was slapped SO hard!!!
The Prayer & Amazing Grace will at times make you forget to even breathe.
'Say Something' is super emotional & Kirstie-led. Mitch will blow you away with his high notes in Can You Feel The Love Tonight.
I need to vent to my people right now because I had an experience the other night that made me really sad.
I'm a 5-Star Uber driver and I've got a LOT of tools in my toolbox to make people happy and comfortable and to give them a good first impression during a trip. The usual stuff: water bottles, charging cables, barf bags just in case, etc.
One of my secret weapons is to introduce people to Pentatonix and judging from the reactions I've had over the past two years I'm pretty good at it.
So I played Hallelujah to these two girls two nights ago. One of them had heard of PTX and the other had not. Then, during the second verse, they started talking to each other and before Kirsty's lead they asked me to turn it down. I had assumed that they just had important things to talk about so I kept it going in the background.
Then they asked me to turn it down even more. You could barely hear it over their conversation. They didn't even get Mitch-Slapped. I played other PTX songs during the trip, but to no avail.
At the end of the trip, one girl asked the other if she really liked Pentatonix and she replied "they're OK" and then the first girl said "Honestly, if I never hear them again in my life, that would be fine with me" and they both got out of my car.
I was gutted.
Fortunately, this is the only time that has EVER happened. Most of the time it's "Daft Punk" or "Happy Now" or "Love Again" and I hit the LED party lights right when the beat drops and people go absolutely bonkers. Or "Bohemian Rhapsody" and they sing along. One girl even CRIED at the end of "Hallelujah", she loved it so much. But not this time....
Run To You. Beautiful five part harmony
For a massive Mitch slap, try The Prayer by them, it's magical. When they hit their harmonies together it is pure magic! added: Kevin (beat boxer) has a stunning voice and has so much talent it's kinda scary. He played Cello at Carnegie Hall as a Teen, Yale med school, speaks Mandarin, produces, loops, writes and is basically a wonder.
You can't go wrong with anything in their catalog..... Grammy winning Daft Punk Medley, Jolene w/ Dolly Parton and Christmas time Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.... For Mitch (round hat guy) there's The Prayer, Problem, AHa (StarVista).... To hear Kevin sing (beatboxer) there's Imagine, Amazing Grace and of course, he has his own channel, to start I would recommend Down... As I've said, their catalog is HUGE
... Many genres... All EXCELLENT!!!! They have a new release coming out soon called "I Rise"...
Great reaction, fellas! And yes, Kevin sings too. “Mary, Did You Know?” and the tail end of “Amazing Grace” are good examples of his smooth tenor stylings- and he’s got solo stuff as well. Look up “Kevin Olusola Down”. The man is a beast! 🤘🏾
Also sings on cover of John Lennons Imagine
And he sings in Bohemian Rhapsody
@@neil2742Yup. I think a lot of reactors miss that he's the one who sings the last lone in Bohemian Rapsody. I think most just assume it's Mitch...
@@AshLee92490 Apparently it's both Mitch and Kevin, which is why it's easy to miss Kevin's voice.
You've just been Mitch-slapped. He's the guy in the round hat and he floors people so often that the fans came up with that phrase for it. LOL Kevin does sing, and very well, but he is also a tenor and they need him for beatboxing more. He gets his own solo on Mary Did You Know, among others. Another angelic high voice.
Mitch is a natural Counter Tenor with perfect pitch. Avi has a 5 octave range. Scott covers bass when Avi is singing. A superbly talented group.
Daft punk or imagine are great. Note: there is one member change. Avi left the group in 2017 and is replaced by Matt.
AJ, it seems like you've got them. Welcome to PTX! We're here for it! I saw that Mitch slap! Kevin sings a beautiful tenor and has solos in several songs like Amazing Grace, Imagine, Evolution of Michael Jackson, Say Something, and more. Scott is a baritone but has an extraordinary range both low and high. Try Bohemian Rhapsody! They also have great original music. Subbed for more!
Ogre was literally what we Pentaholics would called „Mitch Slapped“! 😂
Kevin’s solo “Down” will give you a better idea of just how incredible he is. It’s on his channel KO. PTX also highlights his cello beatboxing in a live show called “Kevin’s Fifth”.
AVIII IS AMAZING ❤
You can pick any cover or original. There is honestly not a bad one.
They were born to be together. Truly. The beat boxer does sing, and well. He has his own channel and he plays cello, beat boxes, mixes and sings songs all on his own. One to check out is Down by Kevin Olusola th-cam.com/video/IGjg193h4Ok/w-d-xo.html More Pentatonix please!
They work together to serve the music. It isn’t about any single singer. Pentatonix is in a class of their own and they created it.
If you guys like this one, you have to watch their live version of this. Many people including myself who watch the live version thinks the live version is better than the official video...
Great Mitch slap!! Be careful, these guys are addictive. Enjoy!
Too late!
Mitch, Kirstie and Scott have been singing together since they were kids. Simply outstanding. Kevin the beatboxer sings as well. Avi left the group in 2017 and Matt joined and he is amazing as well. Listen to The Prayer, Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, tons of Christmas songs. Original works include Coffee in Bed, Sing, Kids at Christmas -and many more.
Kevin is usually too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but he does do so occasionally. He has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the high end of a baritone range, and is known for the great beauty of his falsetto. You can hear him solo on "Imagine." If you want to listen to that I recommend the official video; it includes important visual effects that they can't reproduce in live performances. I also recommend their original song "Run To You," written by Avi and Kevin. No beatboxing, no lead singer, no solos. Just incredibly close, utterly gorgeous five part harmony throughout. Also, Kevin does a good deal of singing (as well as cello playing and beatboxing) on his personal channel: youtube.com/@kolusola
Found you this morning after notification for PTXs latest single I Rise premiering on the 11th 😁 and facial expression on Ogre... Us pentaholics call that a Mitch Slap cause the countertenor/sopranist is named Mitch Grassi 😁
Welcome aboard!
Please react to the Debut album of the band BOSTON. It was released in 1976 and was the best debut album ever. Every song on the album were all big hits. It was recorded in the basement of Tom Sholtz and the lead singer is Brad Delp. 👍👍👍👍💯
Loved this reaction and the "Mitch-Slap" of Ogre was incredible and exactly the same as my reaction when i first heard this version. Tears streamed down my face and every song they've done after, has blown me away.
Mitch's range is 6 octaves and a tone. Scott (blond guy) 5 or 6 octaves, bass to tenor. Kirstie is mezzo soprano with incredible power. Avi (left the band in 2017 for solo career) classical trained basso profundo who has been known to blow out speakers on stage. Kevin is the Renaissance man. Plays cello, sax, drums, piano; invented 'celloboxing' which is playing cello and beatboxing similtaneously, has a sweet, clear tenor and is the member with perfect pitch.
The band was formed in 2011 and has had only one member change in the 12 years they've been together. Matt Sallee became the new bass in 2018.
And just so you know. They are this good live too. The prayer, daft punk, bohemian rhapsody, imagine, amazing grace, just a few that are amazing. There are others
6:54 that mitch slap though 😂
Lovely reaction, the beat boxer Kevin has a great solo voice! Next up to hear Kevin is amazing Grace! Or Mary did you know. I’ll leave other to tell you the other names, I’m sure they will. Welcome to the rabbit hole!.
The beatboxer Kevin has a great tenor voice. You can hear him in Imagine and Amazing Grace, and rapping in Sing. He has singing parts in other songs.
Scott is a baritone. Avi is a basso profundo, Kirsten is a mezzo soprano and Mitch is a conta tenor. Kevin has a lovely tenor voice and is a concert level cellist.
Kirstin
You can't go wrong listening to anything from Pentatonix, but all of us have our personal favorites. Here are some of mine:
• "The Prayer"
• "Bohemian Rhapsody"
• "Imagine" (the official video)
• "Run To You"
• "O Come All Ye Faithful"
• "Daft Punk Medley" (their first Grammy winner)
• "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy" (their second Grammy winner)
• "Jolene" (in collaboration with Dolly Parton, their third Grammy winner)
• "Seasons Of Love" (preferably the live Fourth of July performance)
These are now on the list!
In the outro they are wearing the clothes they wore when they sung this in front of a live audience on their first Christmas special. It sounds just as good live. They really do not need any studio trickery to sound this good. They just need a good mix to balance the voices and reverb.
The reason their voices meld together so well is that Scott (blonde hair), Kirstin, and Mitch (round hat guy) have been friends since middle school, and have been singing together nearly as long. If you want to hear a really good “wall of sound” (their speciality), listen to their version of Imagine. It is sublime…and beyond perfect.
Kirstin
If you want to hear what perfect harmony is listen to them do "My Heart With You". That song was specifically written for 5 part harmony acapella and it's incomparable. Mind you, they have a new bass singer now. Avi went his own way a few years ago so this one will be with the new guy.
If you want a marvelous example of how in-sync they are with each other listen to "Gold". They're just sitting on a couch and in one take they manage a multi-complicated piece that took fancy editing and computer synchronization for Kiara to do.
The very best thing to come out of Mitch Grassi's (round hat) mouth is "Your Power". If it wasn't such a sad song we'd all melt into mindless sweet puddles.
I usually recomment reactors listen to Kiiara's version, at least part of it so they understand what the original sounded like, so that when they hear Mitch almost completely mimic the sound naturally it makes more sense. I agree Your Power (Mitch's alter ego Messer) is a great song, but it's down the list of my favorites. Although I do say anyone walking by the building he's on the roof of, will be looking up for the angels. .
It's good advice to first hear the original on most of their work. I've seen the comments from other Pentaholics that they don't do covers, they do upgrades, and it's too true!
As a singer, it is extremely hard to "hum"and stay in key so cleanly. That part always rocks me. Love love love.
To hear the best of Mitch check out their cover of "the prayer", also Kevin does have a solo in "Mary did you know"
That’s called Mitchslapped! Love him!
Thank you for reacting to Pentatonix (PTX for short) and Hallelujah. I'm sure you are going to get tons of suggestions on what other PTX videos to cover, but first, to get Hallelujah out of your system, please react to PTX doing the same song but live. The best live version is the one on their Christmas Special in front of a live TV audience. It is special because you will clearly see who is singing what. Watch out who covers the bass notes while the bass guy (bearded) is singing his solo part.
Rewinding to watch Ogre's reaction at the Mitch slap 😂
I get goose bumps everytime I hear this song. The beat boxer does sing and plays many musical instruments including chello.
I know folks like the Jeff Buckley version of this because of "Shrek." For me there are three artists that perform this that I absolutely adore, Leonard Cohen (it is his song after all), k. d. lang, and Pentatonix. The breakdown, but keep in mind that they each have incredible range, is this: Scott Hoying (blond, first singer in this) Baritone and will cover lower when Avi Kaplan is singing a verse, Avi Kaplan a true Bass singer, Kirstin Maldonado (soprano), Mitch Grassi (hat) is techincally a tenor with a range that is simply mind boggling. The beat boxer is Kevin Olusola and he is a tenor and he definitely sings (as you will find out). Their covers are wonderful, you cannot go wrong. You should watch these for sure: "Bohemian Rhapsody" - took them five years to perfect it, "Daft Punk" which is a Medley/Mash Up, "Amazing Grace" and any of hundreds of others.
Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah had nothing to do with Shrek. The movie recording was by John Cale and the soundtrack recording was by Rufus Wainwright (music industry BS behind that oddity). Buckley's version was probably the best known at the time, but he died four years before Shrek was released.
Mitch is the counter-tenor. Normally, you only get this type of voice in an adult w/castration as a child. Mitch has shown he can grow a lot of facial hair so he's not a Castrati and has gone through puberty. However, if the larynx doesn't thicken at puberty then you can get a counter tenor which is a vocal equivalent to that of a Castrati. This is extremely rare.
that is not technically true. Counter tenor is A TECHNIQUE where men sing mainly in falsetto. Mitch can partly classify under it, though he rarely (if at all) uses full falsetto. Many classical counter tenors are actually basses and baritons as thicker vocal cords mean they can bring falsetto lower. (Jakub Orlinski, Philippe Jarrousky)
Mitches voice is leggero (light) tenor contraaltino. It is actually the lowest tenor voice types and we have certainly seen that Mitch can hit baritone notes. But it is characterized by extended mixed head voice heavy register, that goes up to G5- exactly the extend of Mitches comfortable range.
It is not the highest and most female sounding light tenor though. That would be altino (like Alex Newell) But the voice types are certainly one of the rarest on the Earth. Especially coupled with the control and mastery that Mitch has over it.
Counter tenors nowadays sing mostly arias written for castratos, thanks to microphones. They existd in castrato times too, but cause their voice is much thinner, they sung mostly in choral music.
@@minaolenella869 Depends on the definition you follow. One of them is that the counter tenor must achieve the voice without the use of falsetto. There are some very sharp conversations about which definition should be used.
@@victorluke5816 counter tenor for certainty would not reach the notes without falsetto. That is impossible. I have not heard a single classical countertenor that was not singing in a full falsetto.
@@minaolenella869 Looks like we are having a differnce of opinion from the experts here. Also on the definitions of falsetto and counter tenor. I know that they don't like to allow links so I'm just going to have to refer you to this snippet.
Some authorities do accept them as descriptive of male falsettists, although this view is subject to controversy;[17] they would reserve the term "countertenor" for men who, like Russell Oberlin, achieve a soprano range voice with little or no falsetto, equating it with haute-contre and the Italian tenor altino.[
Yes Kevin sings and he's very good
I forgot to mention.... They were recently on The Masked Singer as sushi 😂 they did an amazing cover of Radio Head's Creep !
Oh cool!
That was an epic 'Mitch slap' (it's what us Pentaholics call it when people are first blown away by the power of Mitch's angelic singing singing!). He was bullied for his high voice as a child but he's teh one laughing now! This Hallelujah video has been viewed over 700 million times. How incredible are they?
They have three Grammys and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They have a huge catalogue to enjoy. I think you guys would enjoy their cover of The Prayer and Bohemian Rhapsody, which Brian May from Queen think is one of the best covers of Bohemian Rhapsody ever made. No instruments, just their incredible voices. Their Daft Punk Medley if you like dance music won them their first Grammy and it was filmed for around $400 just in Kevin and Avi's kitchen with a ring light, and some blue contact lenses (a visor for Kevin as his eyes were too irritated by the contacts which made everyone's eyes red!). It's epic.
Keep in mind they don't sing anything in the studio that they can't replicate when singing live so, for example Scott who has an incredible range will take over the bass line when Avi (or now Matt) has a solo and Kirstie and Mitch cover for each other. They are known for their covers and Christmas music but their originals are amazing and much under-rated.
They cover many different styles, pop, rock, rap, hip hop, musical theatre, world music, 80s, 90s, EDM and even a bit of country (they won a Grammy for their arrangement of Jolene sung with Dolly Parton!) so there is something for everyone!
Kevin (the Beatboxer) sings solos in about 10 per cent of their songs. He is a Tenor and can actually sing even higher than Mitch! He also plays several instruments and 'celloboxes' which is playing the cello while beatboxing. It's how Scott and Mitch found him as he was celloboxing online. Plus he speaks several languages and was pre-Med at Yale!
They are all amazing. They have been together the same line-up since 2011 (bar the bass here, Avi, in the Beanie who left amicably in 2017 for personal reasons and now has a fab solo career). More recent songs will include Matt (who is also amazing) in place of Avi but the rest of the group have been together since the beginning and the 'trio' which are Kirstie, Mitch (flat hat, counter tenor) and Scott (tall blonde baritone) have been friends since they were children - 8-10 years old growing up in Texas and they sang in high school together.
Please do more Pentatonix reactions. I think you will love the rabbit hole!
wondering if the song you can't remember was 'Run to You', pure harmonies and STUNNING vocals.
So many great recommendations already, I’ll add to the list, Popspring 2016 Live. They sound just as amazing live. In fact they have long said, they don’t sing anything they can’t also sing live. No instruments and no editing on stage! It’s all them!
They are the best acapella group, period.
On songs that PTX can get away without beatboxing, even briefly, Kevin will often join in to create a stunning five-part harmony. He occasionally has short solos, but seldom a whole verse. His skills are so fundamental to the basic beat and 'instrumental' portions of most songs. that he can't be spared. Loving your PTX reactions,
The beat boxer actually has a beautiful voice too! He gets solos! Mary did you know.
Kevin (the beatboxer/celloist) sings. Imagine, Mary Did You Know, Amazing Grace, Can't Hold Us, and others.
Its always fun to see someone new folks get Mitch-slapped. Highest highs
Mitch is a natural born counter tenor. While there are a couple of trained ones performing today (they still have to strain which can be heard), a natural born counter tenor is one to a generation. The last was the late Bobby Hatfield of The Righteous Brothers.
And these two Mitch Slaps. Welcome boys. Come on Boys play the Prayer and AHA Singapore. Ok Singapore isn’t a professional video. It’s a guy with a camara. You have to see. ❤❤❤
Kevin does sing in some of their songs, it is always impactful when he does. Imagine, Amazing Grace, Evolution of Michael Jackson, and Say Something.
Had to come back to say this. Scott (the blonde baritone that starts off the song) takes over the bass part while Avi is singing his verse. It's hard to catch, but the hand off of the bass part between Avi and Scott that happens directly before Avi's verse starts is seamless! Avi starts it and Scott takes the part over immediately before Avi's solo begins and continues throughout that verse before they switch back. You notice this more in the live version of Hallelujah from their Christmas special. I recommend checking that out too even if you don't do a reaction to it. It's great!
The Prayer - Amazing Grace - Sound of Silence - you will like them - the beat boxer has solos in many songs - he does in Amazing Grace - he has a beautiful tenor voice. Scott is the tall blonde, Mitch is the high voice, Kirsty is - Kirsty - and the new bass is Matt.
Check out Kevin's (the beatboxer) solo in Amazing Grace. He doesn't get many solos. but when he does, he sings in a beautiful tenor voice.
