You sort of got what they were doing with the cards, but maybe not completely. When they hold up the various identity cards, they are saying something about who they each are. When they pass the cards, they are showing what they share with the person they are passing the card to. The end HUMAN cards show that even though they are a very diverse group of individuals, they can come together with full respect and love for each other and make wonderful music together. This was also the first time that Scott publicly identified himself as gay (incidentally, the day they filmed this video in Feb, 2017 also happens to be the day that he first met the man who is now his husband). The fact that they are still a band (with only 1 member change) who work well together, respect each other, and are good friends after 13 years is a testament to the message of the song.
In my opinion, "Imagine" is John Lennon's greatest creation. I will always see him at the white baby grand with Yoko when I hear it. The music and lyrics are unadorned perfection, and Pentatonix didn't mess with either. But they did add to Lennon's original global themes of war and religion to include the personal issues of race, gender, and orientation, making it particularly relevant for today. That beautiful PTX "wall of sound" after Kirstie's solo is built on the diversity in all their voices, not their homogeneity. It's our differences that give humanity strength, and they should never be considered things that divide us, because they are actually the glue that makes us powerful and resilient.
They are just showing that even though they are their own person, they also have things in common. Notice as each member passes a card, it shows what those members have in common, then an individual identity and so on. And then we are all human. They are a cohesive group that can somehow look beyond all the noise and literally make BEAUTIFUL music together. Jmho. Take care guys
Thanks guys for a fun bit in my morning! I may not agree with some of you, but at least you're not boring. Regardless...I think PTX did a wonderful rendition of it. And modernized the message John was sending.
Imagine by Pentatonix may be one of the most important videos of this century. This group took a classic, timeless song of tolerance and peace and modernized it as only they can. They are a perfect example of what respect and love can be like and what it can accomplish. Five people with differences in race, religion, gender, and sexuality can do beautiful things when they work together. I cried when I saw and heard this the first time and I’m a straight white guy. Just to clarify - this is NOT a Beatles' song. It is a John Lennon solo career song. Just saying. lol. As for Avi's range, yes, he can sing through four octaves with ease. He is simply incredible.
I have an argument that the PTX version was superior to the John Lennon version. Here's why. John Lennon's song was that everyone could get along if they had no differences. No religion, no nationality, no race, no identity. PTX says that we can get along with all of the difference. This was saying that our group has two gay guys, two Christians, a Jew, an Hispanic woman, and a black guy. Guess what we can all get along with all of these difference because we are human.
I see the point is, all of those identities are in that one group, they travel the world in cramped busses and planes, and yet they all get along. They are family depsite the differences, because at the end of the day they are all human. If their group can exist with all these different and even sometimes combative personalities, can exist at the level they do, then why can't the rest of the world just live in peace, and respect each other?

We like to say that #Pentatonix doesn't do covers, they do upgrades, and for the most part it's true. But how do you upgrade a song that's already perfect? Well, if you're Pentatonix you look for a way to make that song more itself. In the case of "Imagine" Pentatonix treats the song and the song's writer with the utmost respect, and engages in a dialogue. John Lennon saw that things like religion and nationality divide us, so he suggested that we get rid of those things. But Pentatonix sees that it isn't possible to get rid of religions and nations, so they propose another solution. You see, the real problem is something much deeper than religion, or nationality, or even money. The real problem is the human tendency to reject people who are different. So Pentatonix looks for ways around that problem, and then they show us how a healthy community deals with differences. First Pentatonix looks for and finds the things they share with each other, the ways they're alike. And in the process they also find the things that make them individuals. And because they've already found the things that draw them together they can not only accept their differences but celebrate them. Doing that, looking at differences clearly and with love, gives them greater insight. It makes them a stronger, wiser, more compassionate community, and they all benefit from their diversity. Instead of dividing them diversity draws them together, until they can look at everyone and see the one thing that we all share - we're all human. And this means that when they meet someone who is very different indeed, in ways that otherwise might seem bizarre or dangerous, they can still see that fundamental truth, that we're all human, and we're all in this together. Unlike everyone in Pentatonix, I'm old enough to have heard John sing "Imagine" live. And that means I'm old enough to have the evening news from December 8th, 1980 seared on my memory: John Lennon, dead. Killed by an assassin who ambushed him when he was coming home after an evening out with his wife, Yoko. For those of us who remember that night, the grief and shock remain as strong now as they were over 43 years ago. John had only 40 years on this planet. We have no way to know what else he would have given us if he'd been able to live out his full life; all we know is what he DID give us, his perfect anthem, "Imagine." I wish he'd been able to see this video. It would have made him so proud.
I've been eagerly anticipating this coming out since it featured in one of the BTS videos. Loved this reaction! I agree that nothing can touch the original, but I do think Pentatonix did a lovely job with the song and the message. Great video, boys! Cheers!

And we shouldn't assume someone else is stupid because we've discovered one of THEIR blind spots. My late mother was a physical therapist, and had what seemed like a supernatural ability to spot what was hurting people and either fix it or find a way for them to deal with it. Several of the doctors she worked with actually believed it was a supernatural ability. But there was nothing supernatural about it. If you asked her how she knew something that she apparently couldn't have known, her first response was always "It was obvious." And if you said, "No, this part was obvious but that key detail wasn't," she would think about it, for several days if necessary, and then tell you what little bit of inside information she had that made it obvious to her and not you. Twelve years ago, when my mother was nearing the end of her life, I developed an allergy to Neosporin. When I realized that I was experiencing an allergic reaction the first thing I did was to wash the Neosporin off - obvious, huh? Something makes you itch, get it off your skin, duh. But when I told my mother about the experience she said, "You would be surprised how many people in the same situation would never even think of washing it off. You would be even more surprised by the number of people who would think of it, but then wouldn't do it." I believe her; when it came to understanding people my mother was always right. So are all those people stupid? Is the entire world stupider than I am? It seems highly unlikely. What is much more likely is that everybody's human, everybody makes mistakes, and everybody has blind spots. Even me. Even my mother. Even you.

I love Pentatonix as a group but their solo and breakout work is awesome , too! This is actually one of my least favorite songs they’ve done but only because of the epicness of others! If you’ve not reacted to their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody … you just gotta! They worked at it for 5 years to make sure it was right and it was SO right that Brian May shared it on his Facebook page with a simple ‘enjoy’ for fans. Mitch did a goosebump inducing cover of Billie eilish’s ‘Your Power’ and has his own Indy music outlet called Messer. AND he and Scott Hoying had their own comedy / singing TH-cam channel called Superfruit and they did a Katy Perry cover of ‘Rise’ with a few friends in support of the families and survivors of The Pulse nightclub shooting in Florida and it is amazing! Scott’s song ‘Mad About You’ is all him! Kevin Olusola is a beast genius with more talent than is fair! He made a video of just him doing every instrument, singing and beatboxing the song Down and it’s so good you’ll watch it 2 or 3 times back to back! But he really showcases his range in Pentatonix cover of ‘Kissed by a Rose’. Kirstie has done a few projects but I like her best in the group. Anyhow lol if you’ve not heard these, I bet you’ll like or love them!
Fuc+$;ing and God in the same sentence? Oh well. Made me cringe. NO! Anyway, thank you for the video guys! (By the way this is John Lennon not the Beetles)
That's true. I've never been much of a Beatles fan or of their individual works. I knew John sang lead on this one so just assumed it was the Beatles. The only reason I really know it or like it is because of the message.
Butcher, I grew up with the Beatles as well, but don't you think John Lennon would be proud of PTX bringing the song to the forefront again and helping to get the message out there? I think they really paid homage to John and his song. Just remember, the Beatles created all their music to be shared. If not, no one would have heard of them.
We all grew up on the Beatles. Why be so precious about the Beatles or rather John Lennon music. Look at Bob Dylan and how many people cover his songs. It actually keeps the music relevant. Otherwise the music will disappear.
Poor ol Jerzey had to leave the room when Butcher once again proved hes an idiot. Imagine (pun absolutely intended) getting on your soap box so hard and being so passionate about a bands song and ooops not their song! 😂 don't worry butcher...youll eventually get one right.
First and foremost, this is NOT a Beatle's song. It was a solo release by John Lennon. Released a year after the Beatles stopped working together. So, some of you look a bit foolish. As for Beatle's songs being covered. There are hundreds of examples of them. So, save the seizures for the real thing. By the way. I see you guys and I get a little "worried". You look like a bunch of burned-out bigots. But then.......................
Sounds like they need to have their own cards - "Burned Out Bigot". Either way, the point of the video is that we are all HUMAN. Let's give eachother a break.
@rlhcat7662 Amazing, you say we are all human and let's give each other a break but you are being judgemental and going along with name calling. Try practising what you preach. These are four of the nicest, most generous guys I know. Thank goodness I don't judge people by appearance and from short term exposure.
We all judge instinctively. Is part of our past of living in the "jungle". Is funny that you see being judgmental as a "bad" thing. Except for the blatant judgements of the reviewers. And watching someone "react" to music or movies or anything is going to require some judgment. But is subjective as to who gets a free pass. I saw the other comments. More than one person saw what they saw. Being "worried" by one type of person, but not another....... Is worrisome.
@@jessicacole7981 I wasn't going by appearance, but by what they said. But I do see the dichotomy in my comment, and don't mind you pointing it out. I just wish for them to see how their comments might come across to someone who is gay.
@@donny1960 Saying that certain statememts are part of "our past of living in the jungle" is just silly. In 10 million years, I do hope we have evolved to where we don't act on those instincts and can use intellect and love in our actions and relations with others. True, some in our society have not evolved to that stage, but I have faith in humanity as a whole, like Lennon and PTX.
Fortunately, it was a John Lennon song. But if it was a Beatles song, I’m sure Pentatonix would kill that one too. 😅 Also, there were no harmonicas in this video. 😙
Butcher, you "grew up" on The Beatles? Really? You do remember that they split up, don't you? That was in 1970, and I was 17 years old at the time. I watched The Beatles' entire career, in real time; they were only together for seven years. John Lennon wrote "Imagine." He released it in September of 1971. The Beatles NEVER SANG IT. This song was one of the reasons Mark David Chapman killed John; Chapman combined it with John's injudicious comment that The Beatles were "more popular than Jesus" and concluded that John was a godless communist and killing him would be a good deed. If you care so much about The Beatles you might at least bother to get your facts right. To the best of my knowledge Pentatonix has never covered a Beatles song, but I hope they do. They'll treat both the song and The Beatles with more respect than you do.
First of all don’t come across being judgmental or homophobic (RELAX), Mitch passed on LGBTQ to Scott who is also Gay and a man, as is Mitch, Scott passed on to Avi who is Jewish and American, on to Kevin who is Black and Christian and Kirstie who is Latino and a Woman and it tied all together as Human
We don't care that Mitch or Scott are gay. We are all concerned that people spend too much time telling everyone about their labels and we believe that this cause so much division. Once we realized that they were saying that despite their labels that we are all just human you can see that we are relieved. We are concerned about labels being more important than the actual individuals that those labels are meant to represent. I don't know any of the five of them but I would be willing to bet that they are way more than just gay, or men, or black, or jewish, or women, or christian, or hispanic, or...you get the point.
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast I appreciate your response and I do agree that people spend too much time on labels and it does make us a divided culture, we are all humans but I just feel that we continue to go backwards in society, I wish I had the answer! I thought the obvious was obvious to everyone, after all that's what makes it obvious. It's not meant as a put-down to anybody. It is surprising when the obvious is not obvious to people. I get your point. OK, maybe some people. Are not up to speed on certain things but it's not meant to be a put down, just a fact. It's my opinion and that's how it should be received. and not taken personally. If the shoe doesn't fit, don't pick it up and put it on.
Thinned-skinned people have no place on these social media platforms.
But, that's just my opinion.
@@2436golden I'm in my seventies, so don't play the age card on me.
When did I EVER say you should lie? To yourself or anyone else? What I said was that we should be kind. That EVERONE, no matter how intelligent they are, has blind spots, and that we shouldn't be embarrassed when we discover one of our blind spots.
You would be even more surprised by the number of people who would think of it, but then wouldn't do it."
I believe her; when it came to understanding people my mother was always right. So are all those people stupid? Is the entire world stupider than I am? It seems highly unlikely. What is much more likely is that everybody's human, everybody makes mistakes, and everybody has blind spots. Even me. Even my mother. Even you.
😊❤ Hi guys!! 😅 I am a true Pentaholic however, I do understand your feelings Butcher!! 😅 Because I feel the same way when anyone tries to cover Stevie Nicks!! 😊❤❤
Totally!
You're nit picking about your favorite Beatles song that isn't actually a Beatles song and was probably never sung by the Beatles. 😂
No "probably" about it. John wrote it after The Beatles split up; they couldn't have sung it.
Keepin' it real!😂
We will check it out. Thank you!
I get it , some people stay in the past and grow mentally old and the rest of us move on with the times.
It's so sad to see people do that
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast I'm glad you agree.😏
Fuc+$;ing and God in the same sentence? Oh well. Made me cringe. NO!
Anyway, thank you for the video guys! (By the way this is John Lennon not the Beetles)
Ogre you're old enough to know it is not a Beatles song.
That's true. I've never been much of a Beatles fan or of their individual works. I knew John sang lead on this one so just assumed it was the Beatles. The only reason I really know it or like it is because of the message.
As someone who HATES the Beatles, I never heard this song until Pentatonix.
If I hear a Beatles song come on, I can't change it fast enough. 🤣
⚡⚡🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥⚡⚡
Why did Jerzey stop wearing his glasses?
I stopped cause my prescription changed and I only need them for far away they are starting to give me migraines when I wear them all the time
Because he wants to be different
Butcher, I grew up with the Beatles as well, but don't you think John Lennon would be proud of PTX bringing the song to the forefront again and helping to get the message out there? I think they really paid homage to John and his song. Just remember, the Beatles created all their music to be shared. If not, no one would have heard of them.
can we vote Butcher off the Island ?
No, but why do you ask?
By John Lennon DUH!!!
Yes, HE was communist!!!
Yeah, not!
We all grew up on the Beatles. Why be so precious about the Beatles or rather John Lennon music. Look at Bob Dylan and how many people cover his songs. It actually keeps the music relevant. Otherwise the music will disappear.
there are just some songs in the world that don't need covers, the originals are the perfect version and should remain the only version.
@@KiyoshiKane I disagree.
@@annmc3878 everyone has that right.
THIS IS A JOHN LENNON SONG BUTCHER!!
True, some in our society have not evolved to that stage, but I have faith in humanity as a whole, like Lennon and PTX.
so only the Beatles can sing this? John Lennon song, which wasn't sung by the Beatles??
A mistake was made
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast 😂 Especially in the tone that was used while "listening" to #PTX create their magic. ;p
Fortunately, it was a John Lennon song. But if it was a Beatles song, I’m sure Pentatonix would kill that one too. 😅
Also, there were no harmonicas in this video. 😙
Nothing like pretending to be a big Beatles fan to try and dunk on a group and 🤡(maybe brush up on your Beatles discography)
or you should not take it so hard that someone made a mistake....
They'll treat both the song and The Beatles with more respect than you do.
i love you too. thanks for the view.
Also I do appreciate your perspective once you realized their message! Thanks
Imagine being that outraged about singing a cover, and not knowing who they’re covering 😂
Imagine not getting the satire behind their comments and thinking they were "outraged"
@@KiyoshiKane lol, mmmkay. Butcher was absolutely put off bc he thought it was a Beatles song.
