Back in 2011, Sean Stockman of Boyz 2 Men told Mitch, “You have one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard!” What I love about his voice is the complete control he has over it. Those runs of his are exquisitely crafted.
@margretrosenberg420 actually, Mitch had been singing some solos in the opening songs, so Shawn was getting to hear him more than just performance #12. The producers really only wanted the groups to have one lead soloist. They didn't even want the bass or beat boxers to do anything else. It really wasn't until home free got there with Tim. Tim broke the sing off.
@@heidifruchtl354 Mitch was singing as low as posible in those early solos, which is not where he excels. And that single lead singer rule was instituted in Season 3. The producers had made it very clear that they wanted no hint that Mitch and Scott are gay to make it onto the show, and they thought Mitch's high voice implied that he's gay. That's exactly why they instituted the Single Lead rule, and it's why they told Pentatonix Scott had to be PTX's lead. But they didn't make any rules about who could sing what harmonies, so Mitch felt free to ascend to the stratosphere when he was singing backup. Most people at home wouldn't be sure who was singing what in the background, so the producers were okay with that. The judges, OTOH, were all professional singers; they probably had a pretty good idea of Mitch's range. But it was only in the 12th performance that they heard Mitch solo in his most comfortable range, though he still wasn't at the top of it.
Mitch is singing the same part Celine Dion sang in her duet with Andrea Bocelli, and he's not using his falsetto at all - just head and head mix for the most part. Scott is singing in Italian, as Andrea Bocelli did in the original duet. This video was actually filmed in a studio, so the forest and snow and sun are all fake, but the atmosphere was still pretty magic!
One of their newest releases is their cover of Seal's "Kiss From a Rose". It gets the full-on PTX treatment. Also, Mitch sang this in the original Celine key, but added a few extra bumps to the highest notes.
They have a behind the scene video showing how they filmed this. Also watch The Recording of Evergreen. You will see them learning and then recording the song. Unbelievable.

LOL! Yes, it's an indoor set and not real snow. They are probably hot under the lights. Matt has been with PTX 6 yrs, so he and Avi were each in the group for about half of the band's career. Since all of Avi's beautiful work with the group is still in heavy rotation, as it should be, poor Matt will probably always be called "The New Guy." They are both such uniquely wonderful talents and Matt is so filled with joy, I adore him. He solos a lot on the newer tracks released on the new Christmas album, I particularly like his part in O Holy Night. This is such a masterpiece. I never ever get tired of how beautiful this song is. I am so glad you all enjoyed it.
Scott was coached in Italian and his pronunciation for this, and according to quite a few Italian speakers, he did a pretty good job with it. It's not the first time the group has sung in a different language. Papaoutai ( Stromae cover) was done entirely in French and Scott was lead, Perfume had lots of Japanese, Gangnam Style ...Korean. This song was written as a duet. If you notice, PTX sang it that way with 3 lead singers. First Mitch and Scott, then Scott and Kirstie, followed by Mitch and Kirstie, then back to Mitch and Scott.
This song comes from their Holiday album last year called "Evergreen". The album was nominated for a Grammy last year. Thank you for your appreciation of their talent.
Yes, Matt is the bass and Kevin is on percussion. But the rhythm section of a band is percussion PLUS bass. Matt and Kevin work together very closely. I've encountered reactors who are unable to believe that Kevin isn't augmenting his beatboxing with a recording of real drums, because they know it's impossible for beatboxing to sound THAT much like the real thing. They're half right; Kevin's beatboxing is augmented, but it isn't a drum track; it's a bass, specifically Matt. Matt is very subtle about it, he gives it just enough volume to make the "drums" sound fuller and not enough so you hear it as a separate bass note. This subtlety takes a huge amount of skill and practice; it's something Avi never managed (to be fair, I don't think Avi wanted to be subtle, not that he's unable). And it's one of the reasons people overlook Matt; they don't realize how much he's doing or how well he's doing it specifically BECAUSE of how well he does it. The trio has had incredible luck when it comes to finding enough people for the band. Avi was the perfect bass for them on _"The Sing-Off,"_ and Kevin is likely the best beatboxer in the world - the fact that he wa willing to give up his slot at Yale Medical School in order to join three teenagers and a bass for a television competition show never ceases to amaze me. And the fact that he stuck with them even after they lost that first recording contract speaks to the quality of his character. But then Avi left, and they needed to find a new bass fast, and who did they find but a young man who had been a fan since he was a teenager and had already memorized the bass part for every song they had ever sung. He didn't have Avi's training or range, but he was darn good and basses need time to grow into their full range, and he was ready to start immediately - he already knew everything in their catalogue. And since then Matt has proven multiple times just what a good choice he was. He fits into the family well, and his voice is still growing; to put it bluntly, Matt is spectacular and Pentatonix is lucky to have him.
Mitch has the voice of an angel. speaking of Freddie Mercury, have you seen their version of Bohemian Rhapsody? When they all come together to sing like that, we call it "the wall of sound" There is a behind the scenes video for this song too. Matt has been with them 6-7 years. They were just nominated for the 5th time for a Grammy for the Christmas album they did last year, Holidays Around the World.
they were nominated last year for their album "Evergreen" It was actually their 4th nomination but they didnt win :( But did they just get nominated for the 5th???
@@taligeoghan8361yes, last week they got nominated for traditional Christmas album (or something like that). I hope they win cause they should have won for Evergreen, it was awesome.
Scott is 6'4" tall. Mitch is 5'11", but because people see him next to Scott they think of him as "the little guy." Kirstie is 5'4", a full foot shorter than Scott, so she ALWAYS wears heels. Frequently Mitch also wears heels, or platforms. I once saw a video of Kirstie and Mitch talking about it. Mitch said that he worries that some day when she's walking down a ramp onto the stage Kirstie will fall and hurt herself, because her heels increase the angle dangerously. Since then I've noticed videos of Mitch grabbing Kirstie's elbow to help support her when she's walking down a ramp.
Loved the reaction! The entire scene was constructed on a sound stage. There's a BTS video that shows how they made the music video. I finally saw them live in August and they sound just as good, its scary. Their harmonies and the way that they create such a full sound with only 5 voices is amazing.
They are super amazing. I listen to them all the time. They just dropped a new video. "Kiss From A Rose". It is so so great. There is nobody like them.
you guys have to react to their rendition of “Aha” specifically the Singapore performance! where mitch really showcases his vocals. love your guys’s reactions keep it up 💞
You were raised right in my books, if you can love & appreciate this song!!! I always love, when the reactors, look nothing like you would imagine, covering certain songs 😊 Really enjoying your reactions guys!!!
When people ask Mitch and Kirstin which of them can sing higher they look at each other, shrug, and say, "Maybe Kevin?" Not counting Kirstie's whistle notes, Mitch and Kirstie seem to have the same top note, give or take (I suspect it varies from day to day). But when what you want is those ethereal high vocals, Mitch is the one to go to. Kirstie's voice is beautiful in a different way.
They're being nice, but its Kirstin. Not including whistle notes she's the only one to reliably reach the sixth octave. Even in this song, she hits the highest note.
@@nikkilee6739 I'll have to take your word for it; I don't have a good enough ear to reliably determine that for myself. I've been convinced since the first time I saw/heard their rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" that they chose to have Mitch sing that high "For me" for some reason OTHER than Mitch being the only one able to reach the note; Kirstie could certainly have done it just as well. It may have been because Mitch was the one who sang that in "Evolution of Music," but I don't know; it might also have been just to bring attention back to Mitch as the lead singer.
Thanks again for reacting to PTX! This one should have won 50 awards. It's just remarkable. Hey...just to drop a little knowledge for you guys...just because you can't hear your television with your headphones on, doesn't mean we can't hear it. I don't know who's but there's definitely something playing around one of you that's not the video you're reacting to. 🙂
BTW, I believe the top note on the final bars is Kevin in his falsetto mode - you can hear him clearly on the last 4 or 5 notes. Kirstin and Mitch when asked which one of the two of the could sing higher, they looked at each other and went "Kevin ... yeah, Kevin." You might want to check out the 20-min. documentary "The Recording of Evergreen," where they toss around ideas for who should sing what bit. Kirstin's face when she hears the first full mix is pure happiness.
Lining up side by side is a very Pentatonix formation. It's done in most videos and always in concert. Their harmonies are often described as a "wall of sound". I think the formation is symbolic of the fact they don't have a traditional LEAD singer. They choose the voice that fits the part. No egos. They respect each other's talent and support each other professionally as equals. THAT'S what makes them so unique.
I love you guys. There has never been a time that I have watched your reactions that I don't have a smile on my face or actual tears from laughing at your banter. Makes me miss that core group of friends that unfortunately at my age have passed on. Thank you guys for your time, thoughts and laughter. Peace✌🤗
This podcast is a trip, if you see these guys you would never guess that they would like this kind of music. I know that they are suppose to critique but I just didn't expect them to do this group
Great reaction guys! It's such a pleasure to watch you. From the huge selection of Pentatonix I highly recommend Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy (from Ballet The Nutcracker - Tchaikovsky). It's been a while and Avi is still with them in this song - it is simply CRAZY AMAZING! No words - just instruments - oh sorry, their voices.
So happy you guys reacted to this one! Love this number from Pentatonix! One of my favorites! Cheers guys! As for the original by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, the only difference between that version and this one is the bridge. The original bridge section is in Italian while Pentatonix chose to sing the bridge with English lyrics. Both versions are beautiful!
This totally off subject but I would love to hear you react to Alice's Restaurant by Also Guthrie in your podcast. It's right up your alley but it is 18 min so too long for a reaction. Although with y'all you might do just that.😂😂😂
They are perfection! Check out their newest version of O holy Night on their new Christmas album, it’ll blow you away like this one, although so far there isn’t a video. It’ll be interesting to see if you can tell who is singing which parts because Scott and Matt trade off and Mitch and Kirstie trade off.
I don’t usually have any problem distinguishing between their voices but there are parts of that song that have me stumped. Praying they come out with a video for it! And yes, it’s just stunning.
The song was written for the movie The Magic Sword: Quest for Camelot 1998 which featured a song called I Stand Alone that Steve "The Voice" Perry sang for the soundtrack th-cam.com/video/3I25Tyjkzuk/w-d-xo.html
I am a hard core Freddy Mercury fan, and for me to say this is very hard, but if Mitch could do all the ranges that Freddy was capable of, which was almost from the bottom of the keyboard to the top, he would have given him a run for his money. But Soprano wise, he is just as strong as Freddy was, sometimes I think Mitch is Freddy reborn...lol He never faulters on a note, much like Freddy, even a bad note comes out good...hahaha
Have you seen them perform "Somebody to Love" in the Queen Family Sing-Along? I love it! ❤ Not sure if this link will work, but here goes th-cam.com/video/P_sNvHXtOlY/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
I would love to see you guys react to another acapella group, Voctave. Would be a perfect time, they have amazing Christmas music. Their version of Mary Did You Know features the writer of the song and …. It’s indescribably stunning. I cried ❤
You can tell that it isn't really snowing because they aren't dressed for snow. This was released on their 2021 Christmas album, "Evergreen." It seems that they always include at least one song that isn't really a Christmas song on their Christmas albums, and "The Prayer" is one of these. But if that song has an official video they try to do something to at least make it LOOK like Christmas. For instance, in the case of "Hallelujah," which was also released on a Christmas album, they were filming in the Mojave Desert, outside of Barstow, California. Because of publication dates they had to film in August and it was around 98° fahrenheit out, but because it was for a Christmas album they all wore winter coats to make it look cold, even though it meant that they all felt miserable. In the case of "The Prayer," however, they didn't have to go to such extreme lengths. They had a really fantastic set that absolutely looks like a genuine snowy forest, so they relied on the set to sell the Christmas theme and wore what they liked. (I love Scott's jacket, by the way. It really sets off his blond good looks.)
Great reaction🥺 It'll be beautiful to see a reaction to "Rise" done by Superfruit (and Mary, Mario and Brian) it was an homage to the victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre🫂 Hugs from Italy
Matt has been in Pentatonix since October, 2017. Six years. Pentatonix began in the spring of 2011, when they auditioned for _"The Sing-Off,"_ so that was the beginning of Avi's time in Pentatonix. He left in September, 2017. Be generous and call it six and a half years. A very few months from now Matt's tenure in Pentatonix will exceed Avi's. And people will still call him "the new guy." 🙄
Eloquent or elegant either…lol (Sorry, couldn’t help myself)! Great reaction…the song was beautiful. The behind the scenes was interesting, it showed the massive set that was created for them to film this…(something about having trouble with getting the sun to co-operate)…sorry, again. Matt, the bassist, joined PTX full time in 2018.
You guys have to listen to their newer releases. They have covers of Kiss from a rose, O'Holy night and a mash up of pure imagination/Christmas time is here. They are all amazing!
Everytime I hear this song it brings tears to my eyes. It's amazing. I'm glad you're getting to their Christmas catalogue. They just released Kiss From A Rose live and you get all the slaps from it. Please keep the PTX reactions going.
With most reactors, their home pages display their latest reaction videos. On yours, the section you call 'Music Reaction Videos' never gets updated, so someone browsing won't see your latest reactions.
Great reaction, its a beautiful song and the group did a fantastic version of it. Mitch stood out especially as well as Kirstin, but as Jerzey pointed out Kevin has incredible control over his beatboxing. There is a clip on here of Kevin showing just how versatile he is, using a loop, cello, beatboxing and singing. Its well worth a look as the guy is so talented, its under Down (Marian Hill KOver) - Kevin Olusola
Wonderful reaction. Daft Punk medley is awesome ( they won a Grammy) Bohemian Rhapsody, Hallelujah and Daft Punk are all performed live in the 2022 Hollywood Bowl if you want to see how they translate to live. I personally like Can’t Hold Us, Mad World, Little Drummer Boy, Carol of the Bells and White Winter Hymnal. If you want to check out originals Sing, Love Again, Water, Coffee in Bed, Can’t Sleep Love, Be My Eyes and Thank You. Pop Spring 2016 has 3 original songs and their Michael Jackson Medley live. The Making of Evergreen shows some of the recording process on the Evergreen Album ( The Prayer is on this album) it is fascinating to see the process of figuring out who is singing which line and perfecting harmonies and coordinating beatboxing. Thank you for reacting to PTX again.
I might take flak for this, but I like Mitch's voice over Dimash. It is angelic how it soars. (I am not bashing Dimash and his massive 7 octive range, but if i had 1 concert ticket, it would be to ptx)
If you want to see how incredibly professional the band is, watch their documentary, Making of Evergreen. It covers their process of creating their 2021 Christmas album Evergreen. The album was nominated for a 2023 Grammy, although they lost out on that one. It's fabulous to watch their creative process and to hear them completely raw as they rehearse and put together the songs.
According to everyone in Pentatonix, including Scott, Scott is the member most likely to forget the lyrics. In concerts they have teleprompters all over the stage because he has so much trouble with it. So of COURSE Scott was the right choice to sing Andra Bocelli's half of the duet in this song 🤦♀️. No, he doesn't speak Italian; he had to memorize the lyrics by rote, and he worked very hard to get the pronunciation right; I'm told by people who DO speak Italian that he succeeded. This song should have won a Grammy, but somebody at RCA dropped the ball and didn't submit it in time. I very much hope that the next time RCA's contract with Pentatonix is up for renewal Pentatonix uses this mistake to negotiate a better deal. Another Grammy-worthy song from Pentatonix is their new rendition of "Oh Holy Night," from their latest album, "Pentatonix: The Greatest Christmas Hits." Matt gets a chance to show off his insanely huge range in it. You might want to react to that one next.
Was Ogre not allowed to join the choir. also the fact that i had to turn this video down lol so i could actually not disturb my neighbours lol was a great song none the less
Scott and Mitch had a side channel called SuperFruit, I have to explain all this so you understand, On there Scott talked Mitch into doing his favorite song from his favorite Broadway musical, the Play is called Wicked, the song is Defying Gravity. The play is the Wizard of Oz told from the perspective of the witches. In this song one witch Elphaba (strange name I know) is arguing with Glenda about learning how to be the first witch to fly on a broom. (the name Defying Gravity makes sense now). You kind of need to understand all of this to not only understand the song, but their "costumes". This song will give you an idea just how high Mitch can go, but I feel he can still go higher. th-cam.com/video/vdNSi07T5GQ/w-d-xo.html
This is late, but he can go higher! The highest note that he hits in Defying Gravity is a G#5. For the beginning of PTX's career that was his highest possible controlled note, but in the last 5 or so years, he's been able to consistently sing controlled A5s (a half step higher), in songs like Can You Feel The Love Tonight and The Greatest Show. I believe the highest note he's ever sung in studio or in a musical context is a Bb5 (which is a whole step above a G#5 and a half step above an A5) Little fun fact, but he's not actually singing that high in Hallelujah! His top note in that song is only a D5. Kirstie does actually sing a half step higher then him, hitting a Eb5. What I find most interesting about his verse in Hallelujah is his tone. Mitch's head voice sounds a lot different from his mixed/chest notes. In comparison to his head voice, his chest/mix is usually a lot warmer (although the rare times where he's mixed up to E5―or just anywhere in the 5th octave in general―are less so). For most of his verse in Hallelujah he is mixing (up to Bb4), yet his tone is much lighter(?)/cooler(?)/feminine(?) than his mix usually is. Which I think is one of the reason that verse is so striking. That and the very smart move the group pulled by really stripping back the background vocals to let him shine in that moment. The tension then release is so satisfying and really makes you hold your breath. Anyway, in The Prayer, the highest note he hits is a F5, 2 steps higher than Hallelujah. And the highest note he mixes is a C5, a step and a half higher than Hallelujah. Plus he's using that more fem/cool/light tone that he did in Hallelujah, so I kind of see the The Prayer as "Hallelujah, but higher!" for Mitch, although, still nothing beats the set up to his solo in Hallelujah.
@@mx.confused Actually, they set him up exactly the same way in Dog Days on the Sing-off, watched that just yesterday, and realized that it was the same as Hallelujah. Although Dog days was a little sweeter as he was mentally flipping off the producers of the show, and you know he was doing that by the way he moved his eyes and looked to the side at the camera with that big grin. After the producers told him that if he sang with that gay voice they would be disqualified immediately, but once it went to America to vote the producers couldn't do anything about it, so he showed out.
Back in 2011, Sean Stockman of Boyz 2 Men told Mitch, “You have one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard!” What I love about his voice is the complete control he has over it. Those runs of his are exquisitely crafted.

They are super amazing. I listen to them all the time. They just dropped a new video. "Kiss From A Rose". It is so so great. There is nobody like them.
Added!
Listen to the new oh holy night from the new album. No video, but for oh holy night, it is Matt singing most of that
you guys have to react to their rendition of “Aha” specifically the Singapore performance! where mitch really showcases his vocals. love your guys’s reactions keep it up 💞
You were raised right in my books, if you can love & appreciate this song!!! I always love, when the reactors, look nothing like you would imagine, covering certain songs 😊 Really enjoying your reactions guys!!!
Rock on!
That was Jersey's family talking loudly in the background.
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast Then that's the best sound in the world...family. 🙂
Subbing for more PTX reactions. No one does it better than Pentatonix!!!
No criticism here. Ogre has become a Pentaholic and is doing his own corrections…and I’m here for it! Do “Mary Did You Know” next please.
Thank you! It's on our Christmas list!
They do everything beautifully ❤ My "Mitch slap" came from Aha Singapore. His vocals in that performance are insane!
Is Van Halen called "the" Van Halen? It's PENTATONIX Their followers are called "the" Pentaholics
Great reaction. Hits me the same way every time. Amazing what 5 people can do.
Lovely reaction.
Peace✌🤗
Thank you! That is incredibly kind of you to take the time to tell us that!
This podcast is a trip, if you see these guys you would never guess that they would like this kind of music. I know that they are suppose to critique but I just didn't expect them to do this group
Thank you!
Welcome to The Pentatonix Wall of Sound beware Pentatonix all in a single line!
I love the fact that a vocal group won a Grammy for an instrumental song without words. It's mind blowing.
Thanks guys - that was so fun!!
So good!
This totally off subject but I would love to hear you react to Alice's Restaurant by Also Guthrie in your podcast. It's right up your alley but it is 18 min so too long for a reaction. Although with y'all you might do just that.😂😂😂
Thank you gentlemen. Great reaction to a fabulous song. Thanks!!
Our pleasure!
That’s PTX for you! Great to see you enjoying them.
You need to check out the making of the evergreen album. It is a great look in.
I need way more pentatonix. Also, SUPERFRUIT, THAT JUST SCOTT AND MITCH.
Great reaction🥺
It'll be beautiful to see a reaction to "Rise" done by Superfruit (and Mary, Mario and Brian) it was an homage to the victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre🫂
Hugs from Italy
I would recommend Mary Did You Know by Pentatonix and All is Well (7 Layers version) by Avi Kaplan.
MDYK coming for Christmas
You guys have to listen to their newer releases. They have covers of Kiss from a rose, O'Holy night and a mash up of pure imagination/Christmas time is here. They are all amazing!
We recently reacted to kids from a rose. Within a week of them dropping it.
Everytime I hear this song it brings tears to my eyes. It's amazing. I'm glad you're getting to their Christmas catalogue. They just released Kiss From A Rose live and you get all the slaps from it. Please keep the PTX reactions going.
Love your reaction! Que up for Christmas 🎄! 🇨🇦
you should react to ptx's beginnings on the sing off
We'll check it out
Love watching all of you guys react, especially to Pentatonix. Thanks! Peace …
Thank you!
You guys need to listen to Pentatonix Daft Punk Medley. Totally different, totally fun... mind blowing visuals
We'll check it out
With most reactors, their home pages display their latest reaction videos. On yours, the section you call 'Music Reaction Videos' never gets updated, so someone browsing won't see your latest reactions.
I will check it out
Great reaction, its a beautiful song and the group did a fantastic version of it.
Thanks for the info!
You should react to Little Toy Trains and Imagination/Christmas Time is Here off their new Christmas album! Mitch is absolutely beautiful in them!!
This was recorded in a studio.
Have a blessed Thanksgiving AJ, Jersey, Ogre and Remedial Joker (alphabetical order) and my fellow Pentaholics 💖
Same to you!
Andrre did learn enough English for the song, and Celine learned enough Italian, so they could record it in Italian also, with some English parts
You need to check out Pentatonix - Kiss From A Rose Live Performance Vevo
Sorry, it should have read Pure Imagination/Christmas Time is Here.
I believe the highest note he's ever sung in studio or in a musical context is a Bb5 (which is a whole step above a G#5 and a half step above an A5)
Little fun fact, but he's not actually singing that high in Hallelujah!
Please react to “The Making of the video “THE PRAYER”
It's a danged sound stage guys...lol
Have you done Havana yet? Or Say Something?
We have not. Added!
I don't hear KO so much as I feel him....
Try. Kiss from a Rose for the unsweet side of Pentatonix!
We have! It was awesome! You should check it out in our Pentatonix playlist!
There is no “the” in front of Pentatonix. 😂 Like you care about it 😂
Yo! React to their rendition of A Kiss From a Rose, recently released ❤ 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That's dropping this Saturday!
Can't wait! 🤯💥💯
Subtle as a chainsaw?
Someone has a tv on or something in the background and i could hear it in my headphones........a bit annoying......sorry, but i had to say that.
We were annoyed, too. Jersey's family was talking loudly in another room.
Please take a look at a guy called MARCELITO POMOY, doing a cover of this song. he did it live on a radio station, called the wish bus 107-5
There is a BTS video
We've heard! We're going to check it out!
Turn off the TV in the background perhaps?
That was Jersey's family being lots on the background unfortunately
FFS Ogre please stop saying The Pentatonix. It's kust Pentatonix as is very clear on their videos
No
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast It's so disrespectful to the band
@@joatkins9793 It's not that deep and maybe if you'd have stated it nicely they may have been more accommodating. Always good to be polite x
It's really not disrespectful, at all.
Ding ding, Emma. Lol
I can live without Mitches voice it's ok but Kirstins voice make me melt and it helps that she is insanely beautiful
Please, stop saying "The Pentatonix". "The" is NOT part of their name.
