Yet another in depth guide with a lot of information, that is put together well and easy to understand :) I have a feeling that style in general is about balance and striving for one specific ideal. it just never stood out to me quite as clear as it did in this video. Personally I don't think an online retailer has a shot if you have some quirk in your vision that is not standard or you want something like bifocal lenses. They can't dial you in properly or fit the frame on your face. In my humble opinion, if the adjustment is not happening on the face of the client, you can't call it a fitting. Something so essential to your quality of life as your vision should always be tailored to you in person. But you can look at different frames online, get an idea of what is out there and maybe even have your optician order the specific frame you want. After all, an optician is a craftsman and I think we should support our local craftsmen because we hold know how in our area. One of the reasons why the gentlemans gazette is so successfull might be, that this channel is one of the last places to find actual mens fashion know how that retail personell had back in the day... We don't just pay the middlemen, we also pay for the expertise of a professional and I think that should be worth a little extra, just like you would with your tailor :)

I'm wearing a rectangle Emporio Armani with half rim made out of carbon fiber. The color is dark brown, but for previous glasses I've worn, I usually choose grey.
I had to get prescription glasses so I found this video somewhat useful, particularly regarding the colour of your glasses and frames. I settled on Oliver Peoples glasses called Fairmont in a tortoise pattern. Funnily enough, it looks a lot like the ones Preston is wearing which was not kept in mind at all when looking. Anyways, I only got the idea for Oliver Peoples thanks to American Pyshco (literally can never spell the word, and word check NEVER works!), a movie. What I'd say is get a family member or a friend to tell you how the glasses look on you and keep trying lots of pairs. Thankfully, since all of my family have glasses, they can tell me what looks good on me and what doesn't. So I basically can skip first part of the video. WHEN GETTING YOUR GLASSES! Especially if it's an expensive pair, get transition 8 lenses. They're very good for keeping your eyes safe while remaining stylish with a single pair. As the lenses turn into sunglasses when outdoors and back to normal lenses when in doors with fast transition.
I am a lifelong Spectacle wearer. Back in around 1998 the bulk of Frame Companies...stopped making smaller Frames (for MEN); What a nightmare it is to find my size since "1994". I visit DOZENS of Optical Outlets, all to no avail. They all suggest a "more masculine or bold look" Women's Frame, or even Children's Frames (some decent styles but all in bright colours like Lego Blocks) Part of the issue not covered in the Video is --your Prescription-- If you suffer Astigmatism or other Vision Correction outside of "typical Nearsightedness", the Optician needs a --more rounded Frame-- Aviators "work best" in those situations such as inclusions of High Diopter #'s (Prism). Round Frame also is a good option for problematic Rx. I am currently wearing a Ray Ban in black with clear edges. Two sizes up from what I need... (I became "sick & tired" of wearing "the same old-same old Wire Frames) I really love them apart from having to be forever pushing them up (or outright holding them up to read Posters, Prices on store shelves etc.) I wish to seek if there is such a thing, as "Vintage Spectacle Frames" that are available, & are they a risky purchase (as I still have a few Plastic Frames from my youth, & found that over time they "warped" & others just "fell apart". I would think its risky. Has anyone had success (only asking abt Vintage PLASTIC ones) Thanks in advance! I love these Videos & enjoy going the G.G. route.

So much missed here. 1. Firstly, you have to know what you are going to use the glasses for. If you are an athlete and wear your glasses during your sport some types of glass are not practical. For example, I am a sailor. I thought I would like a pair of plastic glasses, but I didn't realize how easily they fall off when you are active. The rubber nose pads of my old metal glasses made the glasses stay on my face much better. Also, the nose pads kept the glasses and frame further from my face to the lenses did not get as much sweat or grease on them. Rimless glasses, I have been told, break easily and will not take the punishment other types may. 2. I have been told it is ideal to match the colour of your glasses with your hair colour...but that is just aesthetics. 3. Now a big one, finding the correct fit. My currently glasses are 53 [] 15 140. (lens width, bridge width and temple length). My temple length really should be 145 and I regret not buying a pair with that length as I will explain. About 50% of the people I see wearing glasses were sold frames, or they purchased them on-line, that don't actually fit their face. The most common problem, and I have seen this in your videos, is that the temples, or arms, are not long enough to reach the back of the wearer's ears before they start turning downwards. This makes the glasses sit up above the top of the ears. Your face is somewhat pliable so you can push them down to the correct place on your face, but that brings the lenses too close to your eyes and, with plastic glasses, sweat and grease easily get onto your lenses. Also when you force them into position it pushes on the back of the ear and after a while you will experience a pain in the back of the ear that you didn't notice when you just put them on. Next some people have a narrow face, as I do, and you don't want the glasses to protrude past the sides of your face. I myself, have to get glasses under 130 cm (lens width x 2in + bridge width) in total or they look ridiculous. Also I have a narrow nose. The bridge of my current glasses, which fit perfectly is 15 cm. Try finding a pair of glasses with that size of bridge. Many on-line retailers just classify glasses as men's small medium and large. What happens if you have a narrow face and nose, but you need longer temples? A big problem today is that, although there are many different frame sizes, most frames are made in one size only. You are luck if there are two. So if the frame doesn't fit your face you are out of luck. You can't buy a frame in any size you like, like clothing, sadly. You could do a third video just on these points. On to your next video. I am trying to catch up. Thanks.
I wear a clear frame pair of glasses slightly more rounded than wayfarers with black arms. Before that I had tortoiseshell but I found this style to be more youthful looking

Excellent advice. Really appreciate the skin tone analysis as most skip it. I’m very pale with purple/blue veins. But my hair is dark with ashy tones. As I couldn’t find a good navy pair I went with black. Due to my high contrast look black was a good choice and doesn’t look too fashion forward.

Hi Preston, fantastic video. I wonder, could you give me your two-cents on how a bears would impact glasses shape? I have a beard which (generally speaking) completely covers a tie knot in length. One critical issue ignored: temple placement. I personally like high temples, since they make my face look more “balanced” as opposed to slanting downward. This is especially noticeable from a profile view.
I can't imagine buying eyeglasses online. I bought new glasses recently (at a store) and I must have tried on 50 pairs before I found a pair that looked good and fit me properly. 🤓
I usually have trouble finding glasses that fit me because my face is very narrow, even so much so that I have to go to the children's section in most cases. I also have very light, warm olive skin and a heart shaped face. That said, I did recently (well, half a year ago) find a pair of child frames that work well for me. They're in the aviator style but with slightly softer angles, and with thin golden metal frames. They're super comfortable and I love them now, but it took me a while to get used to how I look in them. They're not the style that I usually go for.

I might buy sort of tortoise (looking) round Eyeglasses :) even if they don't suit my face 100%, they should look OK. I'll try different drames out... It's nice to know what face shape you have, but it's not necessary. While guides like these are helpful, they are just guides. What matters is the person wearing the glasses. They may follow these instructions step by step, and find that they don't like what was supposed to suit them. I don't personally know my face shape. I have a slim jawline with aa big forehead, so I guess heart shaped? I don't know, and I didn't know when I was getting glasses, I just used what I knew about my sunglasses and what shape I was interested in. I like rectangle frames and cooler colours, so that's what I was immediately drawn to. Having the in-store experience then made shopping for glasses elsewhere a lot easier since I knew the sizes that fit me best. I think knowing your size is more important than knowing the shape. The best fit for me is like 57-18-145, though the bridge size and lens size can vary a bit without much issue. Knowing my size and my pupil distance made buying glasses online a lot easier. It's still a bit daunting since I don't want to be disappointed and have to return any, but I bought 2 pairs online recently for like 8% of what I paid for 1 pair at the Optometrists office, and they fit and look great. The best part is, I can learn to adjust my own glasses without the fear of breaking them because they barely cost me anything anyways. So in my experience, use the physical stores as an opportunity to find what you actually like the look and feel of, understand the size of your glasses and how they fit you, and use that information to experiment. You may love how a certain frame looks on you even if it isn't technically supposed to. If your eyes are centered in the lenses horizontally, the temples go straight back to your ears without pushing outwards or inwards, and you wear your glasses with confidence, then you'll have a good chance of them suiting you! :)
You left out a negative that effects shopping in both online and in store purchases. If you have a particularly strong prescription, there is a strong possibility that *neither* can provide you with the lenses you need. You may be limited to purchasing from speciality shops that focus on such strong prescriptions and their frame choices are much more drastically reduced. Not to mention that the lenses themselves, without the frames, will be exorbitantly expensive.
In my opinion you should always get lenses and the prescription from a specialised store (i have both astigmatism and hipermetropie), but the rims you can get them from wherever you want.
Another things to consider is the length of the arms or temples as they are actually called. I see many of the examples you have shown where the arms or temples are too short. If the temple hips start curving downwards before they are actually behind our ears the temples are too short for your face. You will see the arms or temples then up too high above your ears. This is an obvious error. The use of the glasses is also important. I am a sailor and squash player and I wear my glasses during these sports. Plastic frames are terrible for that and they continually slide down my nose and sometimes fall off. Metal frames with nose pads are much better. I actually have three pair of glasses, plastic for dress, metal for every day and prescription sun glasses that are metal frame as well. The width of the bridge is also an important factor. How close your eyes are and how wide the top of your nose is have to be considered. Your nose pads should never be seen inside the frame. Another consideration is the colour of your hair. Never wear dark frames with light coloured hair. Often matching your hair colour is a great idea. Older gentlemen for example, may select a silver metal or grey plastic frame to go with their silver hair. A blonde persons never looks good with dark or heavy frames. Your glasses should never been a distraction from your face, but compliment it. Douglas Young former marketing teacher, men's wear retailer and, occasionally now, a dress consultant for men.

I think Preston is doing a fantastic job. Honestly, I think Preston shouldn’t shake the subtle awkward delivery. It’s charming and if anything, should be honed into his own unique style.
@@JeremiahAlphonsus Then in my opinion Sven's unique style is better at delivering the same kind of information than Preston's. He reminds me of all the other fashion vloggers (RMRS, Alpha m....) that try to be funny or macho and be you're friend to make you feel included and different from the all other milion faceless subscribers, whereas Sven sticks to delivering useful information in the most efficient way possible, while only including humor to further drive the point home. I'm not saying that Sven's style is flawless, he's had technical issues and sometimes i don't even like the way he looks (E.g. his hair), but his smooth tone and the way he poses in front of the camera to showcase the style rule he just explained is something only he does (other than maybe The Kavalier), and he's very good at it. Sorry if i went too in detail, i just wanted to explain why i think this way.

On-line stores usually give detailed dimensions and have innovative try-on computer programs. Others allow you to try them on free at home.

Tryout Warby Parker and do their free trial of five frames. Can do many times until you find something.

They may follow these instructions step by step, and find that they don't like what was supposed to suit them. I don't personally know my face shape. I have a slim jawline with aa big forehead, so I guess heart shaped? I don't know, and I didn't know when I was getting glasses, I just used what I knew about my sunglasses and what shape I was interested in. I like rectangle frames and cooler colours, so that's what I was immediately drawn to. Having the in-store experience then made shopping for glasses elsewhere a lot easier since I knew the sizes that fit me best. I think knowing your size is more important than knowing the shape. The best fit for me is like 57-18-145, though the bridge size and lens size can vary a bit without much issue. Knowing my size and my pupil distance made buying glasses online a lot easier. It's still a bit daunting since I don't want to be disappointed and have to return any, but I bought 2 pairs online recently for like 8% of what I paid for 1 pair at the Optometrists office, and they fit and look great. The best part is, I can learn to adjust my own glasses without the fear of breaking them because they barely cost me anything anyways.
So in my experience, use the physical stores as an opportunity to find what you actually like the look and feel of, understand the size of your glasses and how they fit you, and use that information to experiment. You may love how a certain frame looks on you even if it isn't technically supposed to. If your eyes are centered in the lenses horizontally, the temples go straight back to your ears without pushing outwards or inwards, and you wear your glasses with confidence, then you'll have a good chance of them suiting you! :)

You left out a negative that effects shopping in both online and in store purchases. If you have a particularly strong prescription, there is a strong possibility that *neither* can provide you with the lenses you need. You may be limited to purchasing from speciality shops that focus on such strong prescriptions and their frame choices are much more drastically reduced. Not to mention that the lenses themselves, without the frames, will be exorbitantly expensive.
In my opinion you should always get lenses and the prescription from a specialised store (i have both astigmatism and hipermetropie), but the rims you can get them from wherever you want.
Another things to consider is the length of the arms or temples as they are actually called. I see many of the examples you have shown where the arms or temples are too short. If the temple hips start curving downwards before they are actually behind our ears the temples are too short for your face. You will see the arms or temples then up too high above your ears. This is an obvious error. The use of the glasses is also important. I am a sailor and squash player and I wear my glasses during these sports. Plastic frames are terrible for that and they continually slide down my nose and sometimes fall off. Metal frames with nose pads are much better. I actually have three pair of glasses, plastic for dress, metal for every day and prescription sun glasses that are metal frame as well. The width of the bridge is also an important factor. How close your eyes are and how wide the top of your nose is have to be considered. Your nose pads should never be seen inside the frame. Another consideration is the colour of your hair. Never wear dark frames with light coloured hair. Often matching your hair colour is a great idea. Older gentlemen for example, may select a silver metal or grey plastic frame to go with their silver hair. A blonde persons never looks good with dark or heavy frames. I think Sven looks more relaxed in front of the camera than Preston, who seems like is shaking a bit.
SRS has a bit more experience. Preston will find his style and voice over time, but the only way to do that is to film videos.
I think Preston is doing a fantastic job. Honestly, I think Preston shouldn’t shake the subtle awkward delivery. It’s charming and if anything, should be honed into his own unique style.

He reminds me of all the other fashion vloggers (RMRS, Alpha m....) that try to be funny or macho and be you're friend to make you feel included and different from the all other milion faceless subscribers, whereas Sven sticks to delivering useful information in the most efficient way possible, while only including humor to further drive the point home.
I'm not saying that Sven's style is flawless, he's had technical issues and sometimes i don't even like the way he looks (E.g. his hair), but his smooth tone and the way he poses in front of the camera to showcase the style rule he just explained is something only he does (other than maybe The Kavalier), and he's very good at it.
Sorry if i went too in detail, i just wanted to explain why i think this way.

It's better not to wear glasses if you don't need them. It's too obvious when the glasses are just plain (non- dioptric) - it looks silly and cheap.
