    Double check with Summit to make sure you have the correct parts for your application. The set up I used is a 2.5" spindle drop for a 1963 C10 with 6 lug wheels. The have sets for 5 lug and simple conversion for stock spindles that are more cost efficient and easier to install.

    Modern Greaser is a show that takes you along on trying to piece together the adventure of working on cars 50+ years old. Modern vehicles are also welcome, thus Modern Greaser. Who doesn't love shows like Road Kill? Or Roadkill garage? Who doesn't love hacks? That is EXACTLY what Modern Greaser is. Not good. At. Anything. At least the latter shows are full of knowledge. Ole MG is NOT. At least you get to see a classic truck with a diesel engine in it.
    The 1963 C10 in this video is a 12 valve Cummins turbo diesel fitted with an Allison AT542. Having this power plant means lots of things for this classic Chevy truck. One thing, the C10 gets great fuel economy. By great, maybe 18-20 mpg. It also shakes the fillings right out of your teeth and that's a good thing. The engine and transmission combo has added a hefty 1,500+lbs to the weight of the vehicle. Heavy duty custom springs have been added to support the weight and the 6 lug spindles have been maintained vs a 5 lug swap. It would truly be better if this truck had an 8 lug set up.
    I bought this truck fully converted for a super cheap price. It is always best to buy someone else's project that they lost money on for you. Doesn't mean I couldn't do a conversion like this myself. The truck needs ONE power wire to make it run. That's it. That's why you see so many cummins swapped hot rods and rat rods. It's not that big of a deal. I am really hoping to swap a 4bt into something if one turns up for a good price. Maybe a powerstroke from a Ford or a Duramax? JK I am not smart enough to convert either one of those. The 6bt is just very unruly and unnecessarily heavy. Stay tuned to the channel as I am going through this truck little by little. There are videos on the suspension, brake conversion, (which a diesel is different since they do not make vacuum). The truck just received a new rear differential and has a new universal wiring harness in the mail. An intercooler was just added and more go fast parts and cool parts like some Coker white walls are on the to do list. Now time to find the scratch... Stay tuned to Modern Greaser and hit the subscribe button so you don't miss any of the latest antics and added content on fixing up this old derelict diesel.
    This truck is also seen doing lots of burn outs and things you shouldn't do with the hater pipe sticking out of the hood. It's easy to get bored and playing with cars is the best thing you can do with your time!

    Great video and clean truck. But man, watching you do this without even cheap battery impacts makes me hurt inside. You know too much to not be "power tool friendly". Love the work Im getting ready to mobilize a '70 lwb farm truck that has sat since the 80's. Considering ls swap since its so cheap to do. or even a vortec 350.

    I bought a disc brake conversion for my ‘63 C10. The cpp drop spindle part number is stamped on the inside. It shows to be a 73-87. Is yours the same?

    • @Lonnie91a
      @Lonnie91a 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine is the same way. You just need to use 73-87 ball joints and tie rod ends. They fit into your control arms perfectly and are an upgrade from the 63-70 ball joints.

    I'm doing the same brakes and 6bt swap on my 65 panel. I've been going crazy trying to get brake pressure and I just realized I have the bleed nipples facing down. Thank you I hope that's my issues. Also did you have to cut the fier wall to fit the 12v?

    • @ModernGreaser
      @ModernGreaser  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will fix the issue! I did the same thing and couldn't bleed mine either haha. It could also be the shim missing from the master cylinder if that doesn't fix it. The fire wall isn't cut, but the valve cover touches the firewall. I had to use a crow bar and bang against the firewall to get the valve cover back on. It's tight, but not cut. Also, check out the video I did on the Eaton Detroit springs th-cam.com/video/bJ_OmIItJxw/w-d-xo.html The springs are PERFECT for the 1,100lb dry motor in the C10. The stock springs are super suck city. Eaton has them in stock, with the right spring rate for I think somewhere around $400. Just tell them you want the springs modern greaser used on the diesel swap haha. There are not too many people looking for those springs!

Also I seen the video on the spring I'm about to order them! And again thank you I haven't seen many ppl do 6bt in first gen c10. I was going to do a big block but a 6bt came my way for just the right price so that what I went with.

      @@travisruble6873 Nice man! That's awesome! I am so glad a 6bt came into your life. They are such a great engineering feat vs ole gasoline engines. Once it's all done, you're never going to want to stop driving it. Mine is leaking diesel from the injection pump all over the place at the moment, but I still drove it work everyday this week. It's like a crack addiction. A Cummins diesel in a C10 is the greatest thing a person can do with their life hahah You're going to question why you didn't build it sooner...

      A spud to extend the booster pin? I think it would have came with the kit... I dont recall as It was a while ago. I did have to buy the plastic stopper to bleed the brakes if I am not mistaken. If you call the guys at summitt they can tell you everything that comes with the kit.

    Are your springs from Eaton stock height? I have a 4 bt in my truck and the cpp 1” big block springs are 1/2” off the bumpstops. I have the 2.5” spindles already.

    • @ModernGreaser
      @ModernGreaser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are stock height. My bump stops hit even on manhole covers with the old springs, now its like a Cadillac. Call Eaton, talk to William if possible (i think that is his name) 313-963-3839 and tell them about this Modern Greaser diesel swap video and your application. They will need to get you the right spring for the 4bt. The 4bt weighs less, so they can set you up with the right spring. Also, if the stock height sits too high, you can cut, 1/2". 1" or up to 2" out of the stock spring. Its a win win by purchasing a stock height. My stock height spring has the truck sitting about 3" off the ground at the oil pan, which is perfect. If i ordered anything less than stock height, it would have been too low. Eaton also has a TH-cam page that shows how to cut the springs correctly. It's easy. Let me know if you have any issues.

    Great info. Just a odd ball question a 1,010lb engine on a 1/2 ton frame. How does everything hold up? I'm gonna get a 1999 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.9 magnum. I want a diesel in it. Also whould you watch if I put a cummins in a 1999 dodge 1500?

    • @ModernGreaser
      @ModernGreaser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frame is just fine. Those trucks were built to haul 10k pounds, so they are built strong enough as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure the Dodge ram will be ok as well. The only issue is that even the diesel equipped rams had issues with the front ends holding up to the extra weight of the Cummins. You will likely have to beef up some front end components as they go out. Hard to say. I'm certain things like the ball joints, tie rods on my truck are under engineered for the purpose they're serving. I've seen Cummins swaps in RX8's, Ford Galaxies, Suburbans, ford Mustangs SO many vehicles that should NOT have Cummins in them that a 1500 Dodge Ram would be IDEAl compared to them. Go for it man

Call up Eaton Detroit spring and tell them you saw the springs they sponsored on the Modern greaser TH-cam channel and let them know your application. They had mine in stock and can get you set up for a really good price. Nearly 1/2 the cost of places I called across the country. They are very helpful. www.eatondetroitspring.com/
