    I've been running my '74 maverick for over 20 years as my daily driver with a 289 that's been bored and some head work, 280H cam, 4bbl carb, headers... and installed a narrow band gauge to help me tune the carb, and I've tuned it and I can keep it stable. I always thought a pcm would be relative as in start with it's base table and adjust based on average o2 between pulses... till I finally got a 'newer' vehicle... now I have a 2006 colorado I5 3.5L, and got a obd2 dongle and some apps, and I see that o2 bouncing around... I'm also finding it extremely difficult to find a way to find even pid's for my app to read all data like fuel level/pressure, and oil pressure/temp, much less how to tune it to simply get everything out of the engine that it's capable of, mpg and hp... been trying to find just some basics, like what hardware I need to connect to pcm and what I need to find and upload a tune file... It's a old truck so I figure they should be out there, and in the early days people did a 'home grown' way of tuning pcm's... I'm just trying to find the most cost effective way to just improve my old truck (new to me and now my daily driver...)...

    The ECU doesnt have a wideband signal going to it even after you buy one. Only your HP Tuner and gauge are seeing the wideband. While tuning with existing narrowband If your lambda and AFR stoichiometric targets are hit then you should be good. Check knock sendors as well.
    In short, I don't think I need wideband, but I am also not a protuner.

    Thanks for describing the differences and benefit of the oxygen sensors. The question remains, why aren't OEMs utilizing Wideband O2 from the jump? Seems like the cost would be negligible when you consider their efforts to make cars more fuel efficient.

    Just found your Chanel and it has been great help for me. I bought a 1997 corvette with heads cam and some other work done. They had it on the dyno and had it tuned back in 2013 when the work was done. The car is equipped with an AFR gauge on the dash. I am noticing under WOT pulls I get an AFR of 11.7-11.9. I feel like that is way too rich and should be around 12.6-12.8. I also have noticed it feels like it kinda breaks up when I get to about 40%-50% throttle and it’s hitting 15:1 then jumps right to the 11.9 right after that. From what I’m getting from your videos is my VE table could probably use some adjustments to fix that 15:1 spot? Then the WOT being to rich would be in the PE settings. I am just wondering if I would be able to set up the scanner with only the LTFT and STFT and be able to adjust the VE table. I hear a lot of people talk about shutting off the MAF sensor and I’m just not sure why that has to be done or exactly how the MAF sensor effects the tune. If you could possibly get back to me that would be great to make sure I’m headed in the right direction. Your videos have been full of great information and I will be supporting your Chanel in the future. Keep up the good work 👍🏼

    • @GoatRopeGarage
      @GoatRopeGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use the LTFTs for the VE table, just make sure and monitor if you're in closed loop, usually a PID called something like fuel system status. But I'd look into tying your AFR gauge into your scanner, most have a serial option on them and that way you could tune your WOT without having to disable PE.

    Newb question here. I'm just starting my education on tuning, and am seeking clarification on your recommendation to use wide band sensor(s). Do you install an additional bung(s) for this purpose, or do you utilize the existing pre-cat bungs for tuning purposes? Perhaps this is covered in subsequent videos, but it's my question of the moment! Thank you for sharing your expertise. I look forward to your reply.

    I don't know if your still answering questions on your older videos, but ill ask anyway. Can I use a single wide band sensor on one bank of a v8 engine to tune? I just finished a heads cam on my 2008 Chevy truck, with stock manifolds and cats. Can I pull one of the upstream O2s and install a wideband for tuning, or should I decat it and get a reading from both banks mixed?

    • @GoatRopeGarage
      @GoatRopeGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, we only have control over the total fueling so putting the wideband in one beach is fine

  • @14truelies
    @14truelies 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay afr question. I haven't started tuning the car yet.
    As you know the coyotes have factory widebands which I are actually calculated for the 10% e in fuel running stoich at 14.1. This fluctuates a lot between lean and rich in idle and cruise. More rich I believe. I think it will go from like 13.3 up to like 14.4.
    Will dialing in fueling help it be more steady or is this just the normal?

    Notice you recommended the Newer kinda dedicated AEM X series , figure you just use what works no need to change it up. Quick question tho , for anyone really. Basically I keep burning up my Wideband O2. I sent more lsu 4.9 O2s to a firery grave than i care to omit. That was with the Innovative gauge/controller .While i do have the AEM phat one ready to go in , i feel ill just be sacrificing O2s to the fire Gods. Its mounted i a very Subbie place behind the turbo in front of the cat.

  • @Glofilter

    I just wanted to be clear on something- are you saying that you should follow these steps every time? In other words, do you first tune your MAF, then SD or VE tune, then tune timing, then tune torque management? So let's say I have a supercharged car from the factory, and I put new pulleys on it, knowing that I'm going to go from peak boost of 7 to 10psi, for example. Using the safety steps in your videos, you would first tune the MAF, then SD/VE tune, then tune the timing, and then whatever else? Just making sure. I was kind of shooting in the dark and doing whatever.

      So I have another question then. I see you logging with the scan tool in HP Tuners, is that somehow with the AFM and wide band sensor you recommend in your description or is it removing a narrow band and replacing to tune. Either way a parameter to log that would be set up in HP Tuner just not sure how you would introduce another outside O2 sensor to be seen in HP Tuner???

    • @flappingflight8537
      @flappingflight8537 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dklbbach there are wideband gauges with controller which take the lambda signal from the wideband lambda sensor , shows the real lambda values, based on that info but in the same time produce narrowband standard signal for feeding the ECU based again on the same info.
      This way you can tune the engine without the need of replacement the lambda sensors after the tuning procedure and the informativeness of the gauge is incomparable to the pure narrowband type one . The best solution is to replace the ECU with one capable of reading wideband lambdas data . Such a ECUs control the air/fuel mixture much thigh , precise and faster .

    Narrow bands are excellent if you just want perfect Lamda, which is why car manufacturers don't use wide bands. Not necessary. Either you have Lamda or don't and are running rich or lean. Wide bands are only useful for PE tuning, since when in PE mode, usually only at wide open throttle, the ECM enters open loop, which disables the stock O2 sensors (narrow band). And even then, if you want perfect lamda for PE, narrow band is the way to go.

      Never mind. Found I need to add a wideband and controller. More $$ into the money pit!

    How to hook wideband to mpvi2 ? Can I tune by eye? Like read the gauge and scanner at the same time to get an idea ?

      Jaywalkin set your phone up to record your gauges then give the car a specific blip on the throttle before a pull so you can sinchronise the footage and datalog.

      You don't, you can bring it in through something like EGR or AC pressure or your can use a serial to USB adapter if you're gauge has serial

      @@GoatRopeGarage how do I do this with mpvi2?

    • @GoatRopeGarage
      @GoatRopeGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just need to find the EGR voltage pin on your ECU then bring the analog from the wideband in on it, you'll then have to setup some custom math to convert it to AFR or Lambda

      @@GoatRopeGarage okay that's easier to understand than everything else I've looked at on the internet. It's really hard to research things when you're brand new because people work things in a way that you would only realize as an already slightly experienced user. Thank you for the response and the free content more of us appreciate it than you know.

    Are you just repeating what others have told you, or from experience?
    i thought narrowband measures from .1 to around 1 and you want to be at .45
    At least that's what my scanner tools live data shows. When i rev the voltage and fuel trim changes indicating how the o2 sensor reacts.

    • @GoatRopeGarage
      @GoatRopeGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If someone told you that you can tune a car with narrowband sensors by targeting .45 volts they are spreading dangerous information.

    • @UnTamedMustang
      @UnTamedMustang 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GoatRopeGarage Makes sense to me considering .1 is lean and .9 is rich. OEM sensors are Lambda sensors.

    • @GoatRopeGarage

      Here is a prime example, from a user submitted log, showing the wideband readings next to the narrow band readings while targeting 1.0 EQ. The AFR target is adjusted for 70% ethanol.

      The issue is that there isn't any real scaling between the two points, the .45v is derived from averaging what we call the "switching" where we take the data from a period of time and get an average and if you are running stoich you should have an average voltage of .45 on the narrowband sensor, but for live data it isn't effective for determining current fuel trims.

    Great information! I have had my HP Tuners for a while now but have not tried to tune anything cause there was too much I did not understand. I am looking forward to this series. Quick question. I have a 2009 CTSV that is stock and I am looking to tune with some bolt ons. Will I need a wide band for each side? You did not mention this in your video. Also if I put one in for each side will I need 2 gauges or will the one gauge work for both? Thanks!

      They are separate. He is using HP tuners program/software and and AEM wideband sensor and gauge. The gauge can plug into HP tuners so you scan the wideband data.
