      Regarding the Bobovr M3 pro. I ended dropping a 'undred quid on the M2 pro with dual battery's and 3d printed a conversion kit so it fits the Quest3. Works a treat. I couldn't wait for the M3 as it's release kept slipping and the few that became available flew off the shelves faster than toilet paper during lockdown 😊

      @@srgpip5620 - That's legit a smart idea - I was debating doing the same. I couldn't catch a M3 from Amazon and their website claimed 3-4 week shipping times and had weird charges added so I didn't follow through.
      I might follow your footsteps since the batteries seem to be the same - and then just upgrade the batteries whenever they make a better version of those.

      I took my Quest 3 back for a refund. There was this issue. Passthrough looked like sh1t. There is also the terrible battery life, and adding an external battery pack barely helps. I predict a lot of headsets with dead batteries after the one year warranty has expired. If you buy this headset prior to a revised version of it, with a better battery pack, you may be wasting your money IMHO.

    Definitely was overhyped. It is a significant improvement from the Quest 2, but looking at all the early reviews saying the pass through is so crisp and clear is a lie. I thought I had a defective device, so I got a replacement and still got the same grainy, unclear pass through experience.

I've now pretty much accepted that certain things look very grainy in my apartment, and have come to enjoy the passthrough after my initial disappointment. probably they have the same focus issues like action cameras. Since the the focus is fixed on those cameras the quality control is important. If the focus wasnt set right, the camera will be blurred on near objectfor example, others go Pros have the sweet spot in the distance and so on. If that is the case with the Quest3 you can not change it with software. The passtrough on mine looks like like a 2006 webcam. I got the Quest 3 yesterday for Christmas, and my dad and me have been bringing it around to show to friends and family the cool mixed reality features (first encounter) during my experience with it, I was actually able to read my phone and computer screen/keyboard pretty well. Of course, it did strain my eyes a bit, so I eventually just opted to remove the headset to see. As for other things not so small, I didn't really have much issue other than the blurry edges when moving around a lot. I personally thought it was extremely cool to use, however I do agree that the ads do not show a true depiction of what it actually looks like inside the headset.

    As a returning customer, the quality that was promised vs what was given was slightly disappointing, but the quality I was used to with Quest 2 vs the quality I‘m getting with the Quest 3, I‘m still super happy with the result, for my personal application (DJing in Passthrough and recording POV) it is a gamechanger and works well enough - not as great as I had hoped for, but good enough to where it works and makes me happy with my purchase.

    Idk if it’s just me but when I first was setting up the quest 3 the passthrough was horrible where as you said I couldn’t even read my phone. After downloading all the updates finishing the setup and restarting the passthrough did get a lot better. In terms of reading my phone I was finally able to actually read most things in my phone including text and other things around my house. The quality and grainy were somewhat the same but visibility got a lot better with text and such. Maybe just me tho.

    Yeah, I think that all the pre-tests with recorded footage might have affected the expetetaions slighlty 😀. SO I am happy with it. In mixed reality games it´s imersive enough for me. Sure it can be better (a lot), but can it be done to an affordable price tag? For me, I can read text on my monitor in normal font size. It´s a bit wobbly sometime and grainy of course. But it works.

  •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I had photo as a hobby before and took what is called "photospheres", like you turn around and take several photos that is stitched to a 360 image, this work well if you are in an area where objects are far away, like you strand in a field in a rural landscape, but when object come closer and have a background a bit away it became almost impossible to stitch the images together, and that on a powerful PC that spent up to 10 minutes try to warp each image to get a perfect fit, that headset try to do the same thing in real time with a weaker CPU, and even more amazing if it can do so with a phone on a half arm length away when it is in an area between the lenses in a spot where optics always get a bit blurry and distorted. I do not have that headset, but you need to get the camera in a straight line in front of one of the lenses, and my guess is that those lenses is sat to have a perfect focus around 170 to 200 cm, onder that and things will start to get out of focus and need sharpening.

    Hows the refresh rate feel on the virtual monitors during pass through? Does it feel like a smooth experience or is it a bit shaky, laggy when you move your head around? Always hard to fully tell in reviewer videos :)

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Let me get back to you on this with my full opinion, after I have tested more apps! But for giggles I'm typing first quick opinions to you now from inside Workrooms in passthrough. So far, I've only tried 1 of many virtual desktop options that supports passthrough, and that is Workrooms.
      In Workrooms (the default Meta version), the displays seem limited to 1920x1200 (up to 3 of them). All locked at what seems to be 60hz. It's fairly smooth; there's a little jitteriness around the edges when you move your head, and the screens do wiggle a bit.. but it's not something that throws me off at all because there's also a motion blur that happens as you move your head that smooths it out and makes it feel "natural". It's hard to put into words how the wiggle looks, but its like the pixels are slightly shifting their perspective to fit where you're looking better. The screens are fairly "locked in space" (in general I feel all the VR windows/settings/etc. "lock" super well into 3d space.. it's really impressive how well that feature works when you walk around your house). If I headbang like I'm at a rock concert, then I can exaggerate it, but it still doesn't get that bad! I have found that the when in full passthrough mode, though, the cameras are worse than they are when just using passthrough by itself to walk around.. so your environment gets extra blurry, a little wavy and warps as you move your head (way more movement than the slight wiggle from the screens). When I'm at my desk and actively working, I prefer to be in the virtual environment using the passthrough window to see only my keyboard/mouse - and then I tap out to full passthrough if I am doing something outside of direct PC focus.
      Important note keep in mind that the resolution isn't going to match your triple monitor widescreen setup in here - there's just not enough pixels to go around so the crispness of your screens is reduced (but still usable!). I'd say that's probably the biggest limitation I've found as it makes reading text for a long time difficult.
      In Quest Link mode, though, you can use your full screen resolution as a massive display in front of you which makes it feel like you're in an IMAX front row. I can't tell what refresh rate it's at though, it can't match my monitor and feels like 60hz still. There's also no passthrough option in here that I can find.. so it's fully a virtual world with your screen in front of you. The experience and fidelity of the screen in this space is much better than the Workrooms passthrough, but I can only seem to have 1 screen up at a time.
      There are 2 more apps that I'm going to finish testing out "Immersed VR" and "Virtual Desktop" - they both support passthrough and the latter has 120hz support now. They also give you much more control over your virtual screen size/placement/etc. I need a lot more time to play with them and test before I can give my opinions! I haven't had time to set up the latter as it requires a 5ghz router connected to your PC and I spent the past two weeks playing with passthrough cameras and making this video.. but I have set myself a reminder to check back in with you here as I do plan to test them all this weekend.

      @@aline.tech.reviews wow thank you sooooo much for the massive in depth answer!! It sounds like it is totally useable then in workrooms and the pass through us totally useable and tough to make it looks bad. Now I'm very curious to hear what you have to say when you test out Immersed VR and Virtual Desktop. A 120hz experience has to feel l buttery smooth compared to the 60hz just like when phones finally made that jump and I could never look at a 60hz screen the same way again. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your updates!

    Are there settings you can change in the system. I used the meta 3 last night for the first time and my passthrough quality was non-existent. It was horrible. Any tips on how to improve it? I bought this mostly for gaming so I guess pass through doesn’t matter all that much.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not anything that seems to help with passthrough - you can turn up the brightness of your screen to see better and adjust the speed of the cameras to match your light frequencies in your country. The biggest change you can make is to the lighting in your room - focusing on even, white light (avoiding warm/yellow light).
      But yea, as you said, passthrough still seems best served for just getting around obstacles or grabbing a drink mid-game so you don't have to take the headset off. The other aspects of it are mostly novel, goofy experiences.

Honestly didn't know there was any controversy regarding the passthrough because it was just miles ahead of what I'd experienced with WMR. Could it be better? Of course, everything could be better. Is it a dealbeaker because the passthough experience isn't like wearing nothing at all? I don't think so.

    MR graininess is not so significant a problem for me as the distortions caused by nearby objects, such as your hands. I could read the Wi-Fi password from the screen of my iPhone through the Q3, I can see my keyboard, and even read most of the text on the monitor while wearing Q3.... but those distortions are bugging me.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea, I can definitely see that! I luckily dont put my hands close often, but when I do, the warping is intense.
      Meta just released an official statement, yesterday, saying that the passthrough quality will improve and they should be able to reduce warping as their software improves and AI has more user camera data to process for all lighting conditions.

      Apps as in the virtual menus / apps screens / settings /etc.? If so, that sounds like a different issue and one you can likely fix with either changing your IPD setting, adjusting the headset on your face, or checking your vision. If all 3 are good, then I would suggest you exchange for a new one - because all the virtual aspects should be pretty crispy and clear.
      This video is only commenting on the passthrough cameras, where you see your real world environment through the cameras.. not the menus/etc.

    hello , could you do an update of this topic , with the new 62 update , i noticed that my headset had a better passthrough when it was in 59 , but as the updates keep getting better handstracking , the headset started to ask for better illumination each time , as if the fix they found for low light handstracking was to trick the headset to think its allways low light and the result its a grainy experience.
    Im not saying the it was perfect but it was a lot better image quality, now noticing that for this video you where in 57 version would be usefull to know if it was a change for you quest 3 or it is something that just affected later batches.

    So compared to vision pro, pass through is so much better on live view? What about watching movies or playing games? Are those grainy too?

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Watching movies and playing games is not nearly as grainy as the passthrough experience! The passthrough is unique and has a lot of noise from the cameras + is doing a lot of compression/stitching/mapping.
      I generally find that movies and games are high quality. For example, even watching TH-cam videos on a giant theatre screen looks awesome. It's nowhere near a 4k OLED TV, and you can see gaps between and individual pixels if you look for them, but it's definitely good enough. It's even better in games because you are immersed in the experience and pay less attention to things like the screen door effect/gaps between pixels; this is especially true if you use Quest Games Optimizer or run a PCVR game.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also don't know, but it might be worth checking the position of the headset on your face!
      I recently got the "BoboVR" head strap (I put a link to it in the pinned comment on this video), and it is much more stable/secure on the head which allows me to get the perfect viewing angle every time. With the default strap, the headset would move around a bit on my head which would de-align it from my eyeballs.
      You could test this by playing with the position on your face the next time you see it's blurry, and you can't read a message, to see if you can find that "sweet spot" to make it readable again. You can simply move the headset around your face with your hands to look for it.

    I initially used the Quest 3 at night with just the room lights on, so I thought the bad video quality was understandable.
    But then I tried it the next morning, and it was almost equally as grainy in a pretty well lit room.
    Like you say, the video output is so much different from the quality through the lenses, so it's almost impossible to get an accurate representation of what the quality is really like.

      I think that's just the white balance calibrating - it over-exposes everything in that minute while it's finding the balanced spot.
      There's a lot of processing going on to stitch those 2 cameras angles together and map them to your lenses in a way that makes sense (while also processing the controllers, the game elements, UI, etc.). It likely means they have to compress it a lot because of the amount of data that's going through in real time - otherwise it would be a sluggish and awful experience. It may get better if they can optimize things.

    I actually had to replace my Quest 3 because I noticed it had some dead pixels, and I feel as if that one had much better MR passthrough quality in comparison to the one I'm using now.

    One reason I think that reports are mixed. For users in Europe, you either have to choose ( via settings>headset tracking ) between syncing the headset to your lighting (50hz) or to your monitor frequency (60hz). The former will give you good tracking, and stop lights from flickering, the latter will allow you to see your mobile or computer screens clearly. If you are lucky you have a display or mobile that can do 120hz+ since that will give you the best of both worlds

    Ahyup. Thought I had gotten a faulty unit when I first picked up the quest 3 migrating from the Oculus Rift CV1. Especially when the setup tells me to scan a QR code on the phone, but the passthrough was so bad that was impossible no matter how much I tried in different rooms and lighting conditions. Why have a scan feature when it doesn't work. Also black flickering appearing now and then (usually only on the right lens) made me unable to handle using the passthrough at all. Had one unit before that I had to return because of loose joystick, passthrough I think was similar but didn't experience the black flickering on the previous unit.

      @aline.tech.reviews  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Same!
      RE: the black flickering, did you update to the latest firmware and also check your lighting hertz settings in the settings menu (there are 2 lighting choices - if you don't match the type of lights in your country/home then you could get this banding effect). Otherwise, I'd suggest going for another RMA.

      @MrRyuu10 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for the helpful reply! Unfortunately hadn't been home to test this until now. It seems like the passthrough does work now however when it comes to that flickering, so possible the update did fix this. I set the hertz to my country still which was a useful tip! I watched a very interesting video by Bringhurst VR yesterday - he reset his headset 6-8 times and on the last factory reset - BOOM! - the passthorugh was crisp and clear. He had no explanation and he has been highly critical of the passthrough quality, trying desperately to get it to improve. Somehow, after multiple resets, he got it! His passthrough is so clear, people on Reddit thought he was trolling with his through-lens filming with a phone - they accused him of actually removing the internals and shooting through the headset through plain glass! I don't know, but mine is grainy as well and I'm quite tempted to do a few resets to see if I can get that kind of clarity.

      Interesting. That definitely sounds wild and implausible, but I will hold reservations until I watch the video and try it!
      Resetting the device should be easy enough because you dont need to log in before you can see the passthrough quality (if I remember correctly, the setup process was happening in passthrough).

    maybe there is QA issues. I have a 512gb quest 3. and can read my phone screen (admittedly just barely). and also have no problem seeing my keyboard keys.
    However I also wear glasses. so I'm use to making out blurry details when not wearing my glasses, don't know if that helps

      I don't think so! It sounds like we may have the same experience. Toward the end of this video, I showed how I was able to get my phone to a readable level and how using a monitor light bar helps me read my keyboard keys.
      I can't read all the small text, a good example is Spotify playlist descriptions. Its more I can sometimes see the outline of words and guess based on context - but theres not many scenarios where I need to read that small of text.

    I was also confused, every video I see shows the passthrough as super clear and mine is pretty grainy. The mixed reality is clear but the background of my room is grainy. I couldn't tell if I have a broken system or the videos online were misleading. It is WAAAAAY better than the 2 and Mixed reality is playable but was disappointed as it feels like false advertising. It does make me excited for say the Quest 5 or 6 as it is headed into a cool direction.

    I just got the Quest 3 today, and like you said, it was a blurry mess. The only thing nice about it is that it was emitting images in colors versus the ones I used in the past which were black and white. Also, I noticed the virtual objects that I played with during the setup, the image quality is slightly better than previous gen. For anyone new user, keep your expectation low, the pass through world through the quest 3 lens seems like you are wondering in the dream, like that unclear dark fuzzy world that you often witness yourself in your dream. Other than that games are better looking than previous gen, at the moment, I am checking out videos and tips n tricks to optimize my experience.

      RE: optimizing your experience, if you haven't yet check out the Quest Games Optimizer. It's $10, but allows you to force increased resolution for games that run (and they have a ton of pre-built profiles for all the popular games so you don't have to fiddle around with settings much). This boost to the cpu/gpu and redering resolution will come at the cost of decreased playtime as it will suck up battery. I'm compary batteries for a video now but so far the BoboVR S3 is coming out on top with nearly 5 hours of play time.

    I never honestly expected the cameras to actually display any good quality, BUT watching what other people were seeing through the eyes of theirs and then seeing mine, I am kind of confused as to why that would be. Is it because they are using the record a video feature instead?

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's correct! Even if you saw someone record with their phone camera through the lens, it still wouldn't be accurate as phones run all kinds of denoising / sharpening / etc. magic to make images look good.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can! Check out my full review.. somewhere in the use cases section I showcase a bunch of video options. Some of the theaters even have real-time lighting that matches with the video experience, so the screen feels like it's lighting up your surrounding (which is pretty immersive).
      The quality/resolution isn't super crisp (so don't expect an IMAX or even 4k resolution or clarity, but it's good enough to watch movies, especially because you get 'immersed' in the experience since you are blocked off from the real world).

      Yea, I would argue it's better (more immersive) than a home theatre (unless you have an expensive home theater). Plus, you can take it with you anywhere.. in your bed, in the bathroom, on the balcony, on the bus, etc.
      The quality of the screen won't be as good as a 2k or 4k TV.. but you can make it like an IMAX size so that its incredibly fun to watch.

    Weird when recorded its clear but its not clear when displayed in the headset.. is it becase headset needs it high resolution like 4k vid?

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe it's due to the amount of processing that has to be done in real time to display the image in the headset. For instance, there are 2 cameras looking at the same general area, so there is either an overlap where the 2 cameras are seeing the same objects or a blind spot - so the software has to stich both the cameras together in real time and get rid of those problem areas using the cameras and other sensors on the headset. Then, it has to map flat images to your viewing perspective inside the lenses. On top of that, it's processing to track your hands / controllers / any games you may have running that are placing stuff in the space / etc. .. while also keeping track of your boundaries, lighting conditions, and everything else happening in real time.

    It has something to do with the lighting, I just don't know how to perfect it though. My kitchen was working perfectly last night, barely any grainyness other then the more darker areas of the room, but the room I usually use it for.. I've even put more light bulbs in and I just can't perfect it. Maybe it's the light style itself that can make or break the passthrough? I just wish I knew what to do for my own room to make it as clear as possible.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have found a couple things that might help below! Also, kitchens are known for being much more well-lit that other parts of homes.
      In my testing, cool light (5400k+) does better for me than warmer yellow light. All my home/ceiling LED lights are on the warmer spectrum, but all my studio/light strips can go to cool light which is better quality IMO. It feels like the headset will correct warm lights to be cool/white lights if they are the only lights in the scene, which causes everything to get blown own and extra grainy.
      I've found that the even distribution of light is more important than a bright light. For example, a single high powered lamp that lights up the whole room is going to do worse than 12 smaller powered lamps evenly dispersed across all the corners. It seems like it prefers a good average of lighting over a single hotspot that fades out across the room.
      All anecdotal from my own experiences, but that's what I found helped me. I also open all my windows/doors/etc. if I want a clearer experience, to let the sunlight in.
