I bought the expensive set of carbide tools from EasyWood Tools to try and tempt my teenage son to join me in turning (a free years back). He lasted about a week before he went back to cannabis and girls. He was fifteen at the time. The set of carbides rarely get used now. As always, great video.
I live in a small rural community in Kentucky. Me and my neighbors families have all settled here before our civil war. I thank God these kids aren’t about pot and partying. I teach some of the kids basic woodworking and turning. Keep trying with your boy brother
I have never used carbide tools. My tools are Hurricane traditional tools. Decently priced on Amazon. I would like to have the detailer and parting tool though. May have to get my daughter to order these. She uses Temu all the time. Some things are nice others look really cheap. Tha KS for the review,Shay
I did not touch a carbide until about 5 years ago Jane, about the same time I started using resin. Even though I prefer traditional tools carbides do have their place and I would never knock anyone for using them. I think for the price, even the full price you can't really go wrong with this set. Shay
I have the set that looks like this from Amazon. The issue I have with it is the two set screws stripped out and the little wrench had no more purchase and I could not tighten it well. I drilled and tapped it to 6/32” thread (what I had laying around) and it worked just fine. I also found that the end cap on the handle keeps vibrating out. Otherwise they work just fine.
Thanks for the heads up Nick, if I have the same problems I will keep everyone updated. As far as I know they are the same set as the Amazon ones. Shay
Shay! Yeah, I have a set of 1/2” carbides in the shop and hardly ever use them, but I’d spend $20 on a good swan neck alone. Ma buys from temu and has been happy. I’ll have to order that set. Cheers on the video. Btw, even with the notification bell on it still didn’t give me the notification of this video 🤷🏿♂️
They seem to be good Todd. I have no idea what the story is with the bell thing but TH-cam has been screwing up on various things for the last week. The only thing I know about the bell is you click it then select all. Shay
Shay, I have the same set. The price was reasonable and they work well for me. The one issue is with the swan neck. Towards the front is too rounded and you have move the rest too far away to get a flat surface on the rest. I a better quality one that I can move the rest closer.
Loved this video Shay, as always you give both sides of the argument and I for one greatly value your judgement. I use both traditional and carbides for different pieces, traditional on bowls and carbide on pens. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Huw, yeah I try to be fair when doing reviews which is why I have only ever done 1 where the company supplied the item to me (unusually they agreed to me saying what I actually thought rather than saying "You are getting the tools for free so you must give a good review" . I would rather spend the money and give my honest opinion rather than give a paid for opinion. I totally agree, both carbides and traditional should be in a turners arsenal as they both have their uses and why would a turner hobble themselves by not using every tool at their disposal. Shay
So, wouldn’t you know it, I had just ordered this same set just minutes before watching this! So, now the first thing I’m going to do is the magnet test. Truly I am not expecting much just wanted it to address some resin turnings i want to do. Not worth investing much as I dont expect to do to many. In fact the resin will be more expensive than the pressure pot and carbides combined lol 😂
That what I will be using them for Ron, resin. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how decent they actually feel in the hand and how well they cut. I know I was. Shay
Thanks for the review. What type of wood were you using, was it a hard wood or soft? How long have the carbide tips stayed sharp if you continued to use these turning tools? Thanks again.
You are welcome Eric, the wood was beech which is a hard wood, I would personally call it a medium hardness . The supplied carbides seem good and I have not used this set enough yet to dull them but from using other carbides , depending on the wood you should be able to get a couple of large sized bowls out if them before you need to turn to a new edge. Even then when you have used all the edges they can be sharpened. Shay
Very fair review. I have no carbides but can see where they could be useful and something like this would do me well. Thanks Shay. By the way, I watch all your videos but seldom comment to save you time because you always reply. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Cheers Brendan, if you have not used the Temu app before find one of those discount codes and use it within an hour of putting the app on the phone and you can get the set for around €25 with free delivery or they are available on Amazon (use the German version to avoid import duty) for 50 odd Euro plus delivery. Shay

Hello I am a beginner in woodturning and self-taught. I started with a handmade lathe and chisels, then I bought a really low cost lathe from a well known local shop, I have already made some candle holders and bowls with it. Just for my soul, of course, not for sale. But this year I "afforded" a little better hobby lathe, and I also bought a set of carbide tools. The carbide tools are great, mine were about 80 EUR via Amazon. They look exactly like the ones in the video. The advantage of carbide tools is that they don't need to be ground, they hold their sharpness longer than standard HSS tools, but the disadvantage is that they are very expensive. I think a set of 10 "inserts" or other forms of cutting tools comes to around €20? I practice the following. I prefer to machine raw (wet) workpieces with conventional chisels, dry workpieces with carbide chisels and only finish if still needed with conventional chisels. Hard - very dry workpieces, very quickly dull classic HSS tools, so carbide hardness is much better. Good luck to all Dejan
While I agree carbide tools have their place in a woodturners armoury Dejan my preference is for the classics I am afraid. Carbides give a beautiful cut on resin but not a great cut on wood. If I am doing a heavely resined piece I will normally do the finish cut with a carbide as it is easier to get a good finish on wood than resin but for a superior cut on wood you can't beat traditional tools. Again nothing wrong with turners who only use carbides, it is a personal choice. Shay
I have also experimented with Temu, found them too inconsistent to judge Carbides are probably fairly safe as the manufacture price of the tips is low and the bar holding it can be mild steel as long as the overhang is small. The shavings say you were cutting well on a new edge.
I couldn't find it when I searched Michael and I searched any variation of the wording I could think of. Good information to know though, thanks Michael. Shay

Ahh the error of youth Stevio, turning would probably have worked out better less trouble and cheaper than girls but we were all there.

I just shortened the shaft in the handle. I found that they cut very well for the cost!
They do indeed Billy.

Good honest review shay the tools seem to cut fine and for 20 odd quid a bargain,
Cheers From will👍😊
Cheers WIll, Yeah for 20 odd quid , basically the price of a set of replacement carbide cutters this full set is a real bargain.

Thanks so much for the review, just bought these and was very dubious but they seem great for the price
I find them fine and have found nothing to complain about, they seem to be great value.

The negative rake carbide tools really make for a smooth turn. Very little sanding required.
I have not tried them. I will get some cutters and give them a go.
