Woodturning an Irish Walnut bowl
Getting a walnut bowl blank in Ireland is a very very rare thing, in thirty odd years of turning this is the first one that I have ever had and it was very kindly donated by William Kenny, a good mate and a very good Irish woodturner.

Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Your safety is your responsibility as is the safety in your workshop. Enjoy the videos, hopefully something inspires you or helps you along the way. Irish woodturning is a craft that is dying out and should be preserved so that the tradition of Wood turning in Ireland stays alive and well.

Shay I have found that my accuracy improves if I drill the wing hole in the square stock first before I begin turning the body. I also created a pattern for the wing cutouts and I cut those after I am finished turning, so I don't get any catches.😊

I wanted to thank you for the initial angel turning design. I am usually a one-off turner, but my angel gifting has put me at 11 so far. I was fun trying to find the right combination of exotic woods for this project. I have decided that yellow heart for the halo, purple heart for the body and hard maple for the wings works well. I also decided to round over the tops of the wings. Thank you again for sharing. Every time my friends ask me what I am doing, I tell them that I have a date with an angel.

Good morning from Oregon, usa. Sorry about the spelling in my email last week. I didn't proofread, and I was a bit tired. It has a few pictures of a cherry bowl i turned after boiling a roughed out blank from wet wood. 1 hour per inch works like a dream to keep it from cracking. Also, if you have a drying box, it speeds the process up to about 2-3 weeks.

You are welcome Eric, the wood was beech which is a hard wood, I would personally call it a medium hardness . The supplied carbides seem good and I have not used this set enough yet to dull them but from using other carbides , depending on the wood you should be able to get a couple of large sized bowls out if them before you need to turn to a new edge. Even then when you have used all the edges they can be sharpened. Shay

The kitchen was destroyed as well but the new one is ordered and will take about a month, there are a few other things to do but the main stuff is starting to fall into place. Yes it is surprising what wood locals think is useless. I just bought one from Amazon and had to send it back because there was a dent in the bottom of the vacuum pot. The packaging wasn't damaged, so I can only assume they don't have any quality control, ship everything regardless of manufacturing damage at the factory, and just hope that the buyer accepts a damaged product. After reading a lot of reviews on these, I found a couple of other people who had the same problem. Anyway, I returned that one. The second one is on it's way. If it's damaged or anything is wrong with it in any way, I'll just send it back for a refund, and go with another manufacturer.

Thanks for the video. I’ve been watching a few videos by Glenn Teagle who recommends to not use carbides like a scraper. His technique is to roll the cutter over 45 degrees and to angle the handle back so that you use the small bevel on the cutter. This supposedly means the carbide cuts rather than scrapes and you don’t get the tear out issues. Not tried it myself as I don’t have carbides, but have been watching Glenn’s videos to see if they’re worth a try.

Shay, apologies, I should also have said how much I appreciate you spending the time and effort to create your videos. I’m a new turner and I always look out for your videos. There are too many Bobs in the world, a few more Shays and we’ll all be better off. Glenn’s videos may help, just thought I’d mention them as I’ve been watching a few lately and he seems to have a good technique. Cheers Shay. Richard.

No need to apologise at all Richard, I appreciate the advice to watch videos on someone who knows a lot more about carbides than I do. Shay

That was really nicely done Welcome to the dark side lol. I think it would have been a bit less bitey if you had used the round carbide a bit aswell thats a really nice looking pen kit too all in all for a carbide virgin WELL DONE

Hi most people think that carbide are scrapers wrong if you use the tools as y Traditional tools you will get a fantastic finnish without much sanding Ride the bevel not straight in

Oh, I was under that impression as well. I will give riding the bevil a go, thanks. Shay

I'm not really a carbide guy, kind of like you I use them for certain things. But with pens I do like to make my final shape with a square carbide. I find that using the square Edge with a negative rake carbide will leave a easy to sand finish. And the slow cutting makes the final shaping easy. Great show thanks

I must look into getting some negative rake carbides to try out. Shay
