  • I made a video of my turbo rebuild on my n54 powered BMW. There are not to many videos I could find and the one I did was old, so I figure I would get done that I think is a little updated.
Yes, I do not have some of the terminology of the part incorrect, but as stated on the video I am no expert.
All parts were component balanced, and they are shipped off for VSR balancing and machining of the turbo housing. I did have to have the chars machined to fit the bigger wheel, but I was able to do that at a diy shop. They just do not have the setup to do the compressor housings.
Here are some of the sizes of the wheels I went with.
    Compressor Wheel (billet): 39.5 / 51.00 mm (14T with Extend Tip / 6+6 Blade)
    Turbine Wheel : 34.9 / 40 mm (9 Blade High Flow)
Feel free to comment, bad or good, I know the trolls are out there. FYI, no part out yet. Enjoy.

Did you also need to have the bearing housing machined to fit the larger sized collar?

Thanks for sharing. So its the mamba 14t comp wheel with standard size exhaust wheel (different paddle design)
Are you happy with it? How do you describe the power increase over stock ? Cheers 👍

Good work, I've subscribed! Waiting to see your followup video you mentioned in other comments.
How did you get the housing machined for the larger wheel? Do Mamba give you the details of machining required? Thanks

So sorry, I made a video and trying to edit it just super busy. I would with a international military customer and always stay busy.
As for mamba, yes they provided exact measurement. However, the place I the UK did their own measurements and machined the compressor housing to match.
As for the chars, I did that in house. With a lot of patience and a drill press. I would tune the char on a jig, also while keeping center. I would definitely recommend to have it proffeional done. But I just wanted to do thr build myself and send off for just the compressor housing machining. I hope this answers your questions. Look out for the update video over the weekend.

      David,
Thanks for the comment. The turbo parts were about $320 and the balancing and machining was about $300. Shipping was another story. I messed that up so I paid a little more than I wanted.
All and all after fluids, and hardware for the install I am looking at $1000. Now I did do inlets and outlets, so you could add those to the build, however I could have used the factory one, but I thought it was not worth skipping that.

Well I am getting ready for making an update video on the how that car feels. But I am holding 23 psi to redline with no issue. I want to keep the tune at that spot. I am not limiting on fuel yet so I fell good. I have not got it on the dyno yet but I hope this week. Which I will add in the video. I will see What I am putting down. I am hopping for 480 whp in this weather. It is about 105 ambient right now. My meth injection will help but when the temps cool back down to 80’s I will be over 500. I hope.

Sorry for the delay, a local performance shop recommended a company in Taiwan. I had to reach back out them to get the website.

They have kits or individual parts for a lot of turbos.

@@bmwid10t17 Hi I have mamba upgraded CHRA's with new comp housings, about to fit.
Obtained some used turbos and used exhaust housings, added new waste gates, actuaters etc, so straight swap with current units on my car. Your car still running well?

    Good work and vid.
I went with Mamba also, spoke with the owner, Japanese guy, said they source all metals used from North America or Japan. I went with 14t and 9 blade turbine, new CHRAs, balanced, with new comp housings, and flapper kit.
Just about to install. Your car still going well?

    • @bmwid10t17
      @bmwid10t17  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah car is running strong, now on direct meth injections for 7000 miles, no issues. Last Dyno run before direct meth I put down 481whp and 472tq on a DynoCom.
That was at 24.5 psi in 4th gear. I will going to the Dyno agin now that I have the direct meth, should be just over 500 as it hold 26 psi to redline and at 9 degrees of time. The meth cleaned out the logs a lot. No timing drops, and less fuel duty needed too.

@@bmwid10t17 Thanks for reply, I live in New Zealand, thought I was only guy in the world punting on an Tai upgrade.
About to do it now, inlets, sump gaskets, mounts, belts, pulleys, pcv, intercooler, downpipes. Have MHD stage 1+ loaded at moment, have you any input/ contact i can source for a 18-20 psi max custom tune? Not a lot of options here, fuel is crap, 93 octane is the top spec.
      Cheers, Wayne.

This rebuild won’t work unless you balance the turbos, I have tried it before and it was a complete waste of time, turbos blew up right after I installed them. Balancing is a must to get the them working properly, but great video anyway 👍🏼

    • @bmwid10t17
      @bmwid10t17  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for the comment, however toward the end of thr video I talk about balancing. I had these sent off to the UK for VRS balancing.
I had them check each component for true balance and thne had them, perform a dynamic assemble balance. But yes assemble balancing is a must.

This a company out of Taiwan, so far I have been impressed with the quality. I sent the turbos to the UK for VSR balancing. I was able to talk to the shop owner and asked how bad it was. He said not bad at all. This is important because mamba says that they balance East part, so they were truthful on that part. No issues so far. I will have an update video coming soon.

    • @bmwid10t17

It is strongly recommended to get VSR balancing. The turbo components are all individually balanced but the VSR balance is a dynamic balance of the turbo assembly.
