    If a box has two different factions and you only want one of them it's a good idea to see if a friend wants the other half and then you can split the price

    • @ThorOdinson
      @ThorOdinson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or you can eBay them. I’ve always had an easy time selling the other half of a two-army box.

    • @QuitLifeTV
      @QuitLifeTV 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me and a friend did that way back. We bought one box each of Assault on black reach and split the armies.
      I guess my only problem with that was that starting out as a horde player in WHFB, I had told myself not to go with a horde army in 40k, but I couldn't cope with the loyalists :p

    One of the biggest thing I recommend to people wanting to start a new army is play your list on TTS first before you buy all the models. My lists often need 3 or 4 revisions before I find which one feels right for me. It would suck if I had bought all those models only to realize didn't need a certain squad or I needed something I hadn't bought yet and wasted money on things. Like Daniel said. Measure twice, cut once. :)

      @billjensen51 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It seems the $20 for TTS could save a lot more than that in the long run

    $200 elegoo mars 2 3d printer, $5 stls, and $15 resin bottles make me A TON of models and terrain! Downside: fining stls aren't easy if you don't look in the right places, you're limited to inviting friends over or hobby shops. (Can't play em @ GW or a GT). But you'll save 1000's hahaha 😆

    • @adamhanson5565
      @adamhanson5565 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Depends on the GT. There's one that happens in my area every year that not only allows, but encourages 3d printed & recast models.
      They also encourage spending money at the store that hosts, because we all want the store to stick around.

    I use a combination of wahapedia and handmade paper proxies. Get the base (or hull) measurements, approximate height, then print circular bases and pictures or art of the model at those measurements and hot-glue or superglue them together. Print the art either double-sided or copy the image, flip it, and fold it over to make a little two-sided stand to attach to the base.
    Finally, add a dab of sticky-tack you can press a few beads onto. The beads help you keep track of your wargear. For me, it looks like this:
    Round bead- basic weapon
    Ridged bead- expensive or abnormal weapon for the unit
    Purple- melee
    Red- grenade
    Orange- pistol
    Yellow- rapidfire
    Green- assault
    Blue- heavy
    White- psyker
    Black/clear/letters- unusual utility, flags, relics, etc. Add some mark to differentiate a unit leader.
    Dunno how accepting your group will be but my friends have actually enjoyed playing against a unique and well-marked army.

    • @quincykunz3481
      @quincykunz3481 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and use heavy paper like cardstock. Dont want a big flimsy mess.

    Finding models second hand on ebay can be a great way to get started, especially if they are painted, because then you can jump right in, have decent looking models, and give the faction a try, then strip and repaint incrementally to maintain a fully painted army.

  • @atomwyrm541
    @atomwyrm541 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You can *almost* always make more from the box’s extra bits if you put them together with other box’s extra bits. Like, keep all your extra stuff and you may end up with an extra marine or two that you didn’t originally think you had. I see a lot of newer players tossing the extra bits in the trash with their sprues.

  • @Cannonhead
    @Cannonhead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Tabletop Simulator is another great way to try out an army before you buy anything.

  • @lasselen9448
    @lasselen9448 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You kind of touched upon it, but one thing that should be done when putting an army together is swapping weapons between kits or buying weapon bits from bit shops. That's because GW loves to allow a given number of any weapon in a squad or on a vehicle, and then NOT include enough weapons in the box to actually do that. For instance, SoB Retributors can equip 4 multi-meltas in a squad of 5, but guess how many multi-meltas are included in the box... If you guessed 4, you lost. Heck, even the Battle Sisters troop has the option to take a multi-melta, yet there is none in the box.

    • @nathanvicary9793
      @nathanvicary9793 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, that's the same for most factions. tho it seems that with newer armies they've stopped allowing it as much the death guard and ad mech are a good example.

    I never thought about the third party products part as something you would have to tell people about.
    I grew up in the hobby when gw told you how to build scratch-built terrain out of every day home items and plasticard; things like the original Cityfight codex that showed how to make entire city boards (4'x6') of ruins and walls and everything, and showcased the work of the 'Eavy Metal Team.
    But now it seems that new gamers are getting swallowed by the giants right out of the gate. They have no idea what else is out there because they have been given immediate access to all the tools (at a premium price) they have needed through the internet, thus keeping them beholden to the big company for the entirety of their gaming needs.
    How times have changed in our hobbies.

      It blows my mind at how much business the local Warhammer store here does. People could get models at at least 20% less almost anywhere (including literally down the street at a FLGS). And I see the shop posting on Facebook all of the time people buying huge bundles that include GW paint brushes, mold line scrapers, clippers, etc.

  • @danrichards9516
    @danrichards9516 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hit you your local game stores and ask for specifics that you don’t want to pay shipping on, but that aren’t popular. I asked for metal Eldar, and they did not disappoint. After not playing since 2nd edition I’ve gotten almost 3000 points worth of models and many of them are the same sculpts I played with as a teenager. Things like Banshees or Hawks or Scorpions they’ve sold to me super cheap, I got a bunch of Hawks with the metal tabs removed for fifty cents each. From a store. And with the new leaks I’m guessing they would sell for more easily…

      Funny, I did the same a couple of years ago. Some guy sold me a crap-ton of Tau, still new in the box for like $250. I bought them right before the first pandemic shutdown and have only played with them twice, lol. Now I'm working on them again in anticipation of the 2022 codex.

    Ive thrown alot of money at GW over the years and I still support them today but a huge money saver for me in the last 12 months has been getting STL files and having them printed for me. I have saved 1000's getting this done to build my counts as necron army for One Page Rules Robot legions. Ive also been designing my own Ork related stuff and getting that printed WAAAAAY cheaper and Ive already had all my designs cleared with any Tournaments I have asked for approval on ;) great vid Brewster

    Only remove the plastic wrap and open boxes when you're ready to work on those models, if for whatever reason you want or need to sell those models you haven't started on, you can make a lot more money on unopened product than stuff that's been tampered with. It also acts as a motivator to finish your current projects so you can reward yourself later on by opening a new kit and getting to work on it.

    I can vouch for the resale value. I recently sold some really old 10yr + models on eBay (things like termagaunts and carnifexs that aren’t a meta choice ) and was really surprised with how much I got for them, I made about £120/$160 from 10 lots, all started at 99p to guarantee they sold.

    I went a little more in then budget level because I basically finished one army and wanted to work on a second. I mostly did this for “theme” reasons with my play group so we wouldn’t have so many Imperium of Man “training exercises” - we all play different armies but the majority play something Imperium and some Xenos in there as well. So, I love the Egypt look so I am building Thousand Sons. I still really love my Templars that I created with Indomitus, but some variety is fine. I have no intention of spreading past two armies.
    Can confirm other games resale are bad - Star Wars Legion resale is garbage but I finally got rid of it and now I can stick to just a few things

    Whatever you do, don't do the math what your hourly rate is to assemble and paint your own models. It is definitely below minimum wage unless you are capable of doing super high quality art you won't find on eBay. Some of my best looking models I paid LESS than new in box for someone else to assemble and paint them for me.

    Kitbashing is great. I bummed some bases off a friend and used two skitarii and some sliced up sprues to make marshals. 44 dollars (and a lot of work) for 60 dollars of models. Plus the other 8 in the box for regular skitarii to fill out my squads.
