I really really needed the advice you've made in all these videos, I had a little bit of dice math from my understanding of bloodbowl, but contextualizing it into 40k was hard, because I'm not a very mathematical person. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your insight in the hobby! I hope one day I can up my game, but the army is taking a long time to finish!
Small little echo. Trying messing with the spinning dial on the back. My friends helped me with mine when I first got it. Turn it to the one that looks like a butt. Might not be the correct choice but mess around with it
The one that looks like a but is a stereo pattern, not necessary for this. You want it one direction and make sure you aren’t blending the two. Good to reference how it sounds back before you go through recording the whole vid. Much love man, just an audio engineer looking out!
Dan, I recently stumbled across your channel and since then i've been working through your whole back catalogue, thanks for putting all this information out there
In a really good place. Sadly, I just can't find them time to keep up with wh40k, painting, playing, making and editing videos with everything else I have going on. So just relaxing painting for me these days :)
@@danielbrewster8642 no worries mate, we wish you all the best for the future! I hope to see you again here one day but don't sweat it if you don't feel like it. Thank you for everything.
Great topic and well said! Only gripe is the audio reverb but I'm sure you're already well aware of it. I wonder if some basic audio filters in your video editor would help with stuff that is only caught after shooting like an EQ for saliva pops.
Thanks for the great video. I'm going to show this to my friend who failed his 7'' deep strike charge against me last weekend with his space wolves. Hopefully that makes him feel a little better about his list.
Part of the issue with the example of terminators shooting guardsmen is that you cannot actually divide your shots the way you're saying. You can't direct 10 shots at each unit, because you can't split your fire that way-- you have to split your fire on per-weapon basis, not a per-shot basis.
I really like how your setup is going along. It went from "your boss giving you a zoom call on your bad 40k results" to "your dad helping you out for your first tourney in the living room" vibe. Once your audio is tuned perfeclty your content will skyrocket in quality. Could be fun to see a few of your favorite models next to the microphone, different each episode ? Just a thought.
Fyi you can also reroll successful psychic tests with devasting sorcery, ahriman or big mag to Dodge perils(Not mag), get a higher value/natural value or to make denying harder
Great topic as usual and very well explained. I'm headed to my first tourniment in about 6 weeks and I'm mostly using your videos to prep for it (aside from painting the damn army and practice games)
9 Windriders with shuriken cannon in a Far Flung Craftworld army with the Hail of Doom trait. The psychic powers of Guide is placed on those Guardians and Doom is placed on the enemy unit. Assume both psychic powers have been successfully cast. Seers Council and Focus Will are useful here. Both the Martial Citizenry and Bladestorm stratagems are used. I haven't done the maths, nor actually ever done this in an actual game with every single effect in place, but this must rank as one of the most damaging attacks ever.
I'm about to get a new codex for my Iron Warriors and I'm building a heavy shooting-oriented force. I need to get to know these math techniques so I know how to best direct my fire. It's something these guys would do in the lore anyway, so I'm gonna do my best to get to know it.
Nice video and explanations! If you haven't tried Unit Crunch yet, give it a shot. It helps clear up a lot of math hammer and is a lot easier to read. Looking forward to more!
QUESTION: As someone who still has to play a game I now wonder if my Necrons are actually good since they can be buffed so much... But also fear how the army is so reliant on the Silent King and how losing that unit can affect the course of the battle. I don't plan in using him but the army archetype I see constantly online does. Thanks to anyone with experience who could clear this out for me. Cheers
Tournament stats say necrons are pretty bad right now. They lack the fire power of the new comics and their durability doesn't stand up to the ridiculous damage books like tau can do. That being said, they aren't the worst and can still occasionally win GTs with super obsec focused armies
Have you thought about doing a video on questions its ok to ask your opponent in a tournament environment? I love to see sportsmanship but I'm still not sure what's ok to divulge
Hello Dan forgive me if it’s already up somewhere and I’m missing it but could you give me the link to the discord if it’s still up and running ? Would love to join it to learn more ! Thanks for the great videos !
My issue with the datasheets is why I always check on wahapedia before adding things to my lists. It doesn't show auras from other units or anything but it does have a list of all strategems, including sub-faction specific ones that the models can use and which phases they can use them in.
I really like the Ghostlords Calc but it's struggling in 9th a little as it can't do -1 damage, or multiple on 6s to wound effects for instance. Other than that it's still the quickest and easier to use Math Hammer tool I know of though.
@@BTTFF Ah sorry some detail missing, I meant for for a D6 damage weapon, or a 2D3 damage one. It also can't do the D6+2 for Melta weapons. You can put averages in but you lose some of the detail, the chance of D6+2 being 3 Vs 8.
Great Video, I guess I have to do some math for my units to get to know them better 😅. But why is a charge with a re-roll more probable? I thought dice have no memory, so each charge attempt should have the same probability?
Agreed! with re-rolls the question is really "What is the chance I fail both of these rolls?". The probability of a "fail" is (1 - %chance to Suceeed). So the probability to fail twice, is the percent to fail, squared. Then we subtract that from one to see what the odds are to NOT fail twice! Example. 1 - 0.28= 0.62. Then 0.62^2 = 0.52 and finally 1 - 0.52 = 0.48 which means a 9 inch charge with a reroll has a 48% chance of succeeding in at least one of the two rolls.
Could you please do me a favor and I'm doing a video on reanimation rolls for necron. Obviously I know that Warriors have the absolute best chance of reanimation with reanimating on a roll of a 5 or a six and re-rolling ones. Next it likely would to be reanimated are the Immortals and the flayed ones. These models come back on a role of a 5 or a six but they do not get to reroll ones. I would say the lychguard and the tomb blades but they get a lot worse. To bring back one model requires you to roll a 5 or a six on both of two dice. Three wound models require a roll of five or six on 3 dice. And so on with models with 4 and 6 wounds. An orb of Eternity or the reanimation beam from the reanimator changes these numbers from a 5 or a 6 trauma to a 4, 5, or 6. I know that multi-room models are extremely bad for reanimation oh, but I would really appreciate a dice breakdown like this where I could show exactly why it is broken and effectively non-functional.
Now one thing I should mention is that for each model you lose as long as the unit is still at the end of how you are being damaged buy another unit shooting or fighting ( you cannot reanimate off of psychic or explosions or moral) you get to add that models wound count to your dice roll. So if 19 Warriors are killed out of a unit of 20 you get 19 dice. If 3 Scarab models are killed, at four wounds a model you get 12 dice. To bring back one model of scarabs you need four successes (5 or 6)
Like definitely learn something today. I Now understand why my strategy of using veil of Darkness to charge destroyers was not working. Utilizing the family of Darkness on the chronomancer and giving the chronomancer's 5+invul plus reroll charges to the Destroyers only gives them a 48% chance to make the charge, or 68% if they are Novak
Does anybody know of a game system where buffs aren't multiplicative? Having the entire HQ command cheerleading a single unit is really silly from a narrative point of view.
Many buffs affect specific models. Also, a game like warmachine uses a system of '"comparing results" so adding +1 str adds a flat increase of one more damage per attack. Many video games used to have multiplication buffs as modifiers (arcane spells do 5% more damage) and quickly learned that they had to make them additive. Two 5% buffs would be 10% instead of the 11.25% or whatever it is.
Hope you start making content again, you're incredible at explaining all the nuance in a clear and concise way.
@Daniel please, make more of this awesome content!! 🙏🙏

Good ole math hammer. Nothing like crunching some numbers in order to better crush at some competitive play!
Part of the issue with the example of terminators shooting guardsmen is that you cannot actually divide your shots the way you're saying. You can't direct 10 shots at each unit, because you can't split your fire that way-- you have to split your fire on per-weapon basis, not a per-shot basis.
True. The math was just as an example. But yeah 8 is probably ideal due to attrition losses anyway
