I used to paint figures some 25 years ago, and we always primed white. I remember when people first started recommending priming black, and when colored primers started becoming available. I personally only prime black if im painting predominantly metal or black, otherwise I will prime white or my base color.
Sometimes the internet is a fabulous place. I just got my studio cleaned up, my airbrush cleaned out ready to go, and a whole tray of clan rats that need to be primed and painted...what amazing timing. Im a blood angels player, and I use contrast/speed paints. I suggest doing brown for your base, either tan or light brown for your middle layer, and off white with your drybrush. Or you can do brown base, red, bright orange drybrush. Then do your contrast paint over that. It makes your reds look better.
@@thestateofplay2023 if done right, your shadows will be a maroon color (light red looks when its in shadows) and your highlights will be bright red light the sun is hitting them, and everything in-between will be the proper shade of red for how much light is hitting it. Aaaand FINALLY a miniature painting video that actually gets into colour theory properly!! Added super-bonus is someone who actually understands that shadows are not black! Loved every second of this video, +1 new subscriber :)
Thank you. You know I never thought saying “shadows aren’t black” would be so controversial. I mean we all have eyes. We can literally look at them. 🤣🤣 but weirdly very few mini painters seem to reference the real world when painting. 🤷🏼♂️
I am rather new to mini painting but come from an art background. Really boggled my mind why everyone seemed to prime in black. In classical painting you would usually prime with your shadow tones, mostly oranges, browns and purples to have a good contrast and mood already. Glad to hear that isn't only me being surprised.
Totally get you. I’m from a fine art and design background and the whole black canvas thing always is me scratching my head. Great for some techniques like chalk or pastel but for bright acrylic paint?!
I just started getting into his extensive and expensive hobby and as an art major, I really appreciate this video. It's helped remind me of everything I've forgotten from school involving color theory and I am SO excited to get into painting my Blood Angels, Jormungandr Tyranids and Thousand Suns! Thank you for the tips!
As an intermediate hobbyist I still learn a lot from every one of your videos! Your combination of narration, graphics and real life footage is really fun to watch :)
Like so many things I found your video at the perfect time. For the last 6 months I have been building kits, and buying a few different primers, waiting for it to get warmer and me to finish my indoor spray booth. Not only did I get the most in-depth lesson on priming. Yet there was so much more about beauty of mixing colours right from the very beginning, before even essentially buying any paint. The timing could of not been more perfect, and presented in such a beautiful and insightful way. Thank you so much
Undercoats are perfectly understandable for faster jobs But priming by brush really teaches you to be more financially responsible when you have to prime all of your stuff by hand
Now you tell me. Where were you when I spent £300 on rattlecans! 🤣🤣 It’s mainly a time thing. With two young kids, a job and a YT channel- I don’t have time or patience to prime by hand anymore.
@@thestateofplay2023 oh that's entirely understandable, it's kinda funny going through them one by one and realizing that I have plenty of models to paint
The cost of rattle cans was the reason I bought an Airbrush (H&S Ultra v2) and a Timbertech-like compressor with tank. Bottles of primer are not expensive, certainly compared to the amount you will get from them vs can, and you can do beautiful gradients. I'm no artist never touched an AB before and I had smooth, perfect gradients within the first 30 minutes of opening my airbrush box. (But I had watched SOP review, and lots and lots of videos mainly Vince Venturella).
There’s lots of stuff in this hobby that are “slap your forehead” moments. Like using Lego as a drybrush pallette. 🤣 or putting a sock on the back of my airbrush booth ventilators to catch all the paint particles.
I don't paint miniatures. In fact, for the last 25-ish years I've avoided painting anything. Then a few days ago a mask i had bought that was irritating me with its lack of depth and contrast inspired me to break it my old brushes and...ahem... go buy some paint. Searched one drybrush technique, and now my feed is flooded with miniatures. This video caught my eye, and now I'm noticing everything I did wrong on that damn mask... I had completely forgotten over the last 2 decades that "Shadows aren't black." You've earned this sub, my good sir.
Ok this is amazing. I’ve been painting for 30 years and doing it semi competitively for like 20 and I STILL learned so much. I’ve waisted so much time needlessly glazing… great job man!
This is where I totally slap my brow and why didn’t I think of that!! It’s not like I don’t have the damn ingredients!! Thank you. Now I can use it up.
@@thestateofplay2023 it was one of those oh crap moments when I accidentally put the thinner in without thinking as I also use xf2 for white. That stuff is magic. I saw it didn't do anything funny instantly and thought I'll try spray that and wow what a difference. No clogs smooth coverage so now I can use my German panzer grey primer again.
Yup. My mentality is get it done using the most efficient way possible. Not always the way everyone else does or even the same way per model, unit or squad! 😜
Top notch video. Lacquer toxicity, speckly rattlecan zenithals, black spray being the wrong choice for most colours are all things people need to hear. The one thing I'm dying for a good video on is primer durability. Consensus seems to be airbrush primer is far less durable than rattlecan and lacquers so the convenience doesn't feel like a good trade for gaming pieces. Are the molotow acrylics special in any way that makes them suitable as priming? The airbrush primers tend to be acrylic-polyurethane mixes (which assume makes them more hard-wearing) rather than just pure acrylic.
You don’t need primer. Primer is a myth. I’ve got unprimed models from 38 years ago with no varnish that look the same today as they did when I was 10. Most modern acrylic is tough enough to just stay where you put it. Molotow are graffiti acrylics. Designed to work on walls outdoors in all weather.
Just as a major note, there is still a good use for a black prime. If you're going to be using a lot of true metallic paints, black works really well for that. A lot of heavily armored figures or vehicles being major ones there. Most of my current major projects are more of just a grey primer there because it works well for different things tied into it, and works decently with a mix of metals and non-metals for aimed results.
Awesome video. Thanks for the different perspective on priming. I am definitely one of those prime black always guys, lol. I have some new ideas now moving forward that might help me slay more gray a lot faster.
I was the same. I used to get hella frustrated with how many coats I’d need over it though. Then when I was finished I was like “where’s the black gone!!”. 🤣🤣
State of Play is a new favorite hobby channel now. I love the color theory, and I hadn't considered the orientation of the color wheel for 'movement' of color. This is awesome.
Yeah it’s weird that a simple lock of a colour wheel in place can change colour progression. I “lock” yellow at the top if zenithaling up to white. But often lock a shadow at the bottom. Or a different colour at the top depending on what I’m going for.
yay, new video! wow, this is so impressive to watch... and at the same time so difficult! my brain started racing 5 times while I was watching it all... and this despite the fact that I already knew a good 60 percent... but don’t get me wrong, it’s not about the presentation, it’s about the material! it’s quite complex (if you’re not in the know), but it’s presented just beautifully! color theory haunts me throughout my life, but I try to avoid it... apparently it has won after all. I need to sit down, figure it out and... hang circles with flowers around my work area
🤣 I tend to look at colour theory’s as A leads to B. So start with one colour and then work out the next. If I want my model to be say, green, I know I can use contrasting purple for shadows as well as dark green or blue because they sit side by side on the wheel.
This video was relatable, and motivational. After using an airbrush, I'd say that batch painting miniatures without an airbrush feels like painting a wall with a toothbrush.
If you like sweets (candies) buy a box with coloured transparent wrappers. You can use these to look through to see what colour a paint will go when you spray it on top. And you get loads of sweets to eat!!
Really?! Well I guess they have to push it as no one is watching. I guess that’s how ads on TH-cam work, they match them to the words a TH-camr says, maybe?

I will have to watch this a few more times. This is excellent work. I'm glad to see people returning to color theory and not just slopping on the paint. I am guilty of running straight to the white over black zenithal and getting very dissappointed.
The quality of your videos is insane. Pivoted from TH-cam on the console to my phone just to make sure you get the love you deserve. Just another comment for the algo, nothing to see here 👀
This is one of those things that the fine scale modelers do well and that the miniature gaming world could learn from. I was a fine scale modeler long before I got into wargaming and I’ve always considered primer color before painting my little dudes because of that. Like the video mentioned, I too always just thought it was a lazy aspect of miniature painters wanting to get armies on the table as fast as they can. I’m now wondering if it is a lack of awareness of such techniques. I often see miniature painters “discover” something like it is some brand new technique that never existed. I’m looking at you SlapChop enjoyers. I’d encourage wargamers to explore fine scale modeler channels and even the model railroader channels. You can learn a lot from those folks and even learn techniques that they have been doing for decades. Techniques that should have been a thing long ago in this hobby.
I, like you, started as a scale modeller back in the 80s so brought much of the concepts over. I think miniature painters got used to quick drying acrylics. There’s are a few things I didn’t continue as we scale modellers don’t tend to touch a model after it’s finished so anything that could rub off got dropped.
I've always said that model railroading and mini wargaming are basically the same hobby. You push your little guys around the board and either go "Choo Choo" or "Pew Pew".
I genuinely thought I knew how to prime. Now I have such a better understanding of what I'm doing right and what I'm mostly getting wrong. Thank you, I am definitely going to come back to this for reference.

I use many different versions of Vallejo and Warpainter paint. If you know how to thin the paint, you'll seldom ever have issues. Airbrushing will always be more affordable than spray cans. Even Amazon airbrush kits are good now. I use those and Iwatas. They're both great. Like everything in life, you just need to practice to get better at what you're trying to do.

I think it’s based on the old masters who used it for oil painting. But what is usually ignored is that they painted completely over it and only used it for a tonal guide.
@@thestateofplay2023 you're probably right. It was a common issue in illustration too. There's a ton of photoshop tutorials out there that start with black and white tonal sketches and almost all of them end up with a muddy-looking final product.
Fantastic! Thank you for the great video. I recently picked up my models again after 20 yrs. I was thinking about a lot of these very ideas. I have still been doing art just not painting the minis. This confirmed and also gave me a lot of ideas.

Many channels have been ruined by these people with no taste nor culture.
Thank you for yet another video with excellent advice. I just recently dipped my toe in the water of color primer. I needed to paint 16 identical army troops and found a good camo green that both primed and served as the base coat for a large chunk of the minis. Also bought a dark blue primer to get a start on a similar lot of mobsters wearing dark suits. It was extremely helpful but this vfdeo opens up many more possibilities by adding a 2nd color to the mix. I'll definitely have to give that some thought even if my grasp of color theory isn't nearly as developed as yours.
Please don't use normal rattle can paint. It has WAY more texture than specialised rattle can primer. The pigment isn't nearly as fine. And when you're painting something so small, you don't want large pigments. Obviously there is a place in this hobby for normal rattle can paint. But tiny models aren't it
So any model larger than an old scale space marine? A $5 can is still preferable to a $20 can for priming tanks if the difference is only noticeable if held at eye level under beginner level paint jobs
From primer to colour theory and contrasts. I don't paint these. I paint scale model trucks, BUT I sure as learnt one heck of a lot from this. You are a clever man
As someone just getting into the mini painting hobby, and seeing scores of videos, this is one of the most fantastic tutorials that I've ever seen, a perfect mix of color theory and implementation practices, plus even humor to keep it entertaining. Thank you for making this! Subbed and will check out your other videos.
I’m not sure why but typing in “state of play” I didn’t even get you in my top results. It’s possible your channel name doesn’t help TH-cam/googles string matching due to the terms being so common. That said, I do have confidence you will grow exponentially due to the sheer quality of your work.
I might give that satin varnish idea for speed paints. for awhile I kinda never know why my paint jobs were semi spotty in some areas, followed normal advice of trying not to pool to much, use the proper amount. Nothing worked, so I might give the varnish idea a shot and see how it works.
The satin won’t solve it completely but it’ll certainly help contrast flow better. But being honest, the best way it to thin contrast 50/50 with contrast medium and use two coats over that satin prime. 👍🏼
Amazingly informative video! Your breakdown on color theory was great. I first started to learn about color theory more recently from Marco Frisoni's YT channel. Using your primer as a way to accentuate and play with your color tones will not only save time, but drastically increase the quality of your paint job. Creating depth and smoothness, but saving you lots of effort. Also, anyone considering buying an airbrush, remember, it doesnt have to be an expensive one. There are plenty of airbrush + compressor bundles that are under $150. Especially for priming, you dont need a pinpoint airbrush. It's not even 100% necessary for accomplishing precision work, though it helps.
Thanks for that! I think Marco and I come from the same fine art background. Although he is a much better painter and appears to do painting full time. And you’re airbrush advice is spot on. 👍🏼🎯
There is only one issue with the core idea: rattlecans are more expensive than paint. God forbid i employ my need for variety in colors but on my rattlecans. Moreso, unlike normal paint, you can't mix primers to find more nuanced base coats if you want that route too. But if you know what you want, priming as the base just seems common sense to me. Awesome video despite my nitpick, i really do appreciate videos that actually show the differences in technique
I can’t disagree with you. Rattlecans are expensive and can’t be mixed. But you’d be surprised how many people flatly refuse to even consider an airbrush or any alternative to rattlecans. 🤷🏼♂️
Amazing! You made this all sensible, so many content creators have failed where you succeeded. So glad I found this. Now, I paint on with renewed vigor :)
I'm new to the hobby and given that I'm 3d printing, I just grabbed grey seer for maximum versatility. been working well for traditional base coating, only needs a maximum of 2 thin coats

Amazing video!!!! I just picked an airbrush a couple of weeks ago and the first things I’ve practicing is priming….in black lol. This made me re-think the whole process 🎉
Cool! Practice with any colour, including black. But when starting have a think about what colours will help you get the model done. It’s often not black that helps.
Black is good at hiding many errors but can’t hide a bad shadow colour. 🤣 for that you can use blood, dried blood, slime, pigments, washes or my favourite - just paint over the damn thing! 😜🤣
Just started searching about the miniature painting hobby and I was flabbergasted on everyone always using black as primer, so I refused to accept it and found your video lol. Coming from a painting background, using black as an underpaint and shadows make everything looking muddy and all of your color theory stuff was on point. Really nice video!!!
Great video. I've been doing grey scale slap chop and as soon as it was said it tends to come out "chalky" I was like... ohh that's me! I've been compensating with extra layers of contrast and final highlighting. I need an airbrush. Definitely gonna try learn some colour theory and try multi colour priming
Yeah I picked up my first army today and instantly wanted the Citadel Wraithbone primer since a lot of spots on a Tyranid are bone. Feels more natural to use a primer color that is actually similar to the color of the paints on the mini.
Of all the rattlecans, wraithbone is my favourite as it’s so versatile. Want skin tones? Wraithbone. Want bone? Wraithbone. Want zombies? Wraithbone. 😜
@@thestateofplay2023 It left a bit of texture when it dried but it went on nice and even. The only thing im having issues with is trying to paint flesh tones into the little vents that Tyranids have on them. My red paint went on too think and blotted the details.

Ooh! Nice choices on the models!!
Came here as I just bought my first Blood Angel set, now I’m hooked on this channel. Excellent content👌
Thank you. Only sorry I can’t do this full time!
This is an absolute masterclass not only in the topic at hand, but how all TH-cam videos should be done 👏🏻
Really?! Thank you. I’m humbled.
@@thestateofplay2023 concise but detailed, excellent humour, top notch production and awesome minis... What's not to love? 😅
Binge watching multiple videos a day. Never until now I saved a video to rewatch. You’re a wizard.
Really? Thank you so much. Not even my wife wants to see me that often! 🤣🤣
As an intermediate hobbyist I still learn a lot from every one of your videos! Your combination of narration, graphics and real life footage is really fun to watch :)
Thank you very much!
Awesome hidden tip, using a Lego plate for a dry brush test! Very cool!
I actually have another video with that exact tip! The one about fidget popper pallettes. 👍🏼
Thank you so much
Thanks for the compliment mate, I’m so glad it’ll help you out
Undercoats are perfectly understandable for faster jobs
But priming by brush really teaches you to be more financially responsible when you have to prime all of your stuff by hand
Now you tell me. Where were you when I spent £300 on rattlecans! 🤣🤣
It’s mainly a time thing. With two young kids, a job and a YT channel- I don’t have time or patience to prime by hand anymore.
@@thestateofplay2023 oh that's entirely understandable, it's kinda funny going through them one by one and realizing that I have plenty of models to paint
Don’t we all!!
I think Vince is our hobby messiah. 🤣
Never thought about mixing slapchop and using the multi color prime. Honestly a brilliant move that was right there
There’s lots of stuff in this hobby that are “slap your forehead” moments.
I had completely forgotten over the last 2 decades that "Shadows aren't black."
You've earned this sub, my good sir.
Thank you mate. I always appreciate it a bit more when someone who isn’t invested in the miniature topic takes time to say something nice. 👍🏼
Ok this is amazing. I’ve been painting for 30 years and doing it semi competitively for like 20 and I STILL learned so much. I’ve waisted so much time needlessly glazing… great job man!
Thanks for the compliment mate. From a veteran hobbyist too!
Quick note for Vallejo airbrush primer. It works way better if you think it with the tamiya x20a thinner. Polyurethane reacts with water.
I tried it once with some citadel and got a weird thick soup. I’ll give it another go.
@@thestateofplay2023 Vallejo primer it works perfectly. I've not tried other paints though.
I know this comments a bit old, but what ratio? 1:1? I’ll have to give it a shot, even if I haven’t had that many issues with Vallejo
I love your mentality on painting! So refreshing and motivating! Thanks for your videos!
Yes, you are absolutely correct. I guess I just want people to be aware that there are options. Don’t always immediately reach for the black. 😜👍🏼
Brilliant writing and presentation. Perfection.
Thank you !
This video was relatable, and motivational. After using an airbrush, I'd say that batch painting miniatures without an airbrush feels like painting a wall with a toothbrush.
Yea, I once cut my lawn with scissors just to prove to my better half that we needed a decent lawnmower. It worked.
I have never understood the pink undertones for yellow until now! thank you so much. A lot of info to digest.
If you like sweets (candies) buy a box with coloured transparent wrappers. You can use these to look through to see what colour a paint will go when you spray it on top. And you get loads of sweets to eat!!
Ha, you mentioned The Acolyte, and the video got interrupted with an ad for... The Acolyte!
Foil hats on, guys! 😅
Really?! Well I guess they have to push it as no one is watching. I guess that’s how ads on TH-cam work, they match them to the words a TH-camr says, maybe?
@thestateofplay2023 it would not surprise me if that's how it actually works. I haven't seen The Acolyte, and more ads won't get me to see it

I will have to watch this a few more times. This is excellent work. I'm glad to see people returning to color theory and not just slopping on the paint. I am guilty of running straight to the white over black zenithal and getting very dissappointed.

Just another comment for the algo, nothing to see here 👀
As a new to mini's painting hobbyist, this was VERY informative, thank you!
You’re welcome mate!
You push your little guys around the board and either go "Choo Choo" or "Pew Pew".
the kroot look awesome the way you did it man! thanks for the pointers!
Happy to help!

Not a problem. For the last three weeks I’ve had YT serving me up Ben Shapiro videos. I’ve never once clicked on one.
@@thestateofplay2023 I discovered YT Shorts about 6 months ago (or 'Grandad TikTok' as my daughter was quick to name it) and it all started off lovely with loads of history, science and philosophy. Now I've got a stream of snide 'high value' men putting down rooms full of OnlyFans girls, 'cops gone bad' and Japanese girls in big boots all doing the same dance in the street. And when I click on 'want to try something different' it gives me Korean girls doing the same dance. I'm just waiting for Ben Shapiro to join in. Possibly while Charlie Kirk and Bill Maher provide a beat-box vocal track in the manner of that chap off Police Academy. Time to turn off and read a book, I feel. Thanks for this video anyway. @@thestateofplay2023 Maybe the algorithm knows us better than we think. Bayes was right . . .
I agree. To a point. SOME Amazon airbrushes are good. Many simply can’t be cleaned properly leading to them dying super quick. 😄
I used to brush prime everything black.
I also used to hate painting.

Good option here is to pick up a lighter version of the camo green. 👍🏼
Please don't use normal rattle can paint. It has WAY more texture than specialised rattle can primer. The pigment isn't nearly as fine. And when you're painting something so small, you don't want large pigments. Obviously there is a place in this hobby for normal rattle can paint. But tiny models aren't it
👍🏼
So any model larger than an old scale space marine? A $5 can is still preferable to a $20 can for priming tanks if the difference is only noticeable if held at eye level under beginner level paint jobs
@giantninja9173 anything with small details I wouldn't use a normal rattle can primer on. Clogs them up.
Used Army Painter white primer today for 1st time and never going back to regular primer.
@Meglin1461 out of curiosity have you ever had this issue or are you just repeating internet echo chamber wisdom?

Thanks. Yeah I try to completely avoid anything clickbait as I hate that myself!
Love seeing the variation in the multi spray
Thank you!!
Really good video for someone new to painting
Thanks!
This was the best short video about the subject
There’s longer videos?!
Thank you for making this video! I'm new to mini painting and this video is a WEALTH of knowledge.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for your guidance, wisdom, and knowledge.
Glad it helped
🤷🏼♂️
I undercoat. Yes it's a twice over base coat, then the actual base coat.
Tedious but much cheaper more room to store stuff and it's just simple.
Amazing! You made this all sensible, so many content creators have failed where you succeeded. So glad I found this. Now, I paint on with renewed vigor :)
Brilliant news! So glad it didn’t confuse people!
Yes, colourful priming has helped me a lot
Awesome!
I'm new to the hobby and given that I'm 3d printing, I just grabbed grey seer for maximum versatility. been working well for traditional base coating, only needs a maximum of 2 thin coats

I agree with the many layers needed for Black primers. For me that mainly paints grimdark stuff I found black easy to hide small mistakes.
Yeah slapchop is nice a quick but not always the best looking end result. 👍🏼
