    Hiya mate, you may need to take another look at the fight first fight last rules. Specifically says you cannot use the interrupt if you are under fight last.

    • @danielbrewster8642
      @danielbrewster8642  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Correct -- Editing that part of the video! you CANNOT combat interrupt when you have a "fights last effect"
      "The only other thing the rare rule does is clarify which units are
      eligible to fight, and so can make use of the Counter-offensive
      Stratagem (which lets a unit ‘fight next’). In practice, using the
      above terms, you can select any ‘fights first’ or ‘fights normally’
      unit for this Stratagem" --Designers Commentary

    • @peterheinzo515
      @peterheinzo515 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      but it also says that a unit under the effect of fight first and i fight last is treated as fights normally - so could interrupt? how about a slaanesh daemon that charges a judiciar? i always thought its innate fight first and the judiciar fight last cancel each other out, but since the unit charged it still fights first. but the way i read it in the rare rules faq, it is then treated as fights normally.

    • @awokensheep588
      @awokensheep588 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peterheinzo515 No matter how many Fight First and Fight Last rules you have on one unit. It does not matter. If you have both rules on a unit. They fight normally. Ergo. Slaanesh demon unit charges the Judicar. You have Fight First from charging and Slaanesh daemon and the Judicar uses its Fight Last ability on the Slaanesh daemon. So 2x Fight first and 1 Fight Last. Still makes the unit fight normally.

    3:25 I feel like that’s something that could be simplified by having some kind of rule, maybe a characteristic, which assigns a numerical value to a unit determining their initiative order. This rule, possibly a characteristic, could be placed say, between the “Wounds” and “Attack” stat and be called “Initiative”, or “I” for short.

    It’s worth noting in the GT pack it says if you go into strategic reserves after the game has started, you are not subject to the ‘must come on by turn 3’ rule, so the board edge/deployment zone conditions carry on into turn 4 and 5 still.

    Enjoy your content man, one thing I noticed is for actions when being charged you can fight back without failing the action, if you are not destroyed obviously. And the condition of being in engagement range only prevents you from starting the action. Bullet point one and bullet point six in the core book.

    nice vid. very common mistakes indeed.
    what i encounter a lot is that you cannot reroll smite damage. as a D6 smite rolls 1, it stays one, no reroll. many people still think rerolling psychic power damage is a "damage roll"

    • @SmokeyPants
      @SmokeyPants 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is new for me. Can you explain? Why is the smite damage roll no damage roll?

    • @jozefbucany2310
      @jozefbucany2310 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SmokeyPants you roll for how many damage the smite does, thats is true. the thing is the command reroll can be used only for a "damege roll" of a weapon with a "damage characteristic". for example lascannon had a damage characteristic of D6. so if you hit, wound, and roll 1 for damage, you can reroll the damage. smite doesn't have a damage characteristic, it just says it deals D3 damage, so no reroll.
      same as SOME weapons, like callidus assassin's Neural shredder. it has damage characteristic of "*" because it deals damage based on its ability, which says "if you hit, you need to roll 3d6 and if you roll equal or higher than target's LD, deal D3 mortal wounds". Since you cannot reroll damage characteristic of *, you cannot reroll how many mortal wounds it does.
      other way to look at the thing is that weapons that deal normal damage (lascannons, meltas, bolters...) deal all their damage dealt at once. but weapons that deal mortal wounds and psychic powers that deal mortal wounds don't deal one hit that deals X damage, rather X hits of 1 damage. for example "duty eternal" effect. (not ideal, since it still doesnt work on mortal wounds, but for this demonstration let's say it would...) reduces incoming dmg by one to minimum of one. so lascannon dmg roll of 3 deals 2 damage, but smite roll of 3 damage is 1 damage 3 times, so still deals 3 damage.
      Note that applying this to smite doesn't work, smite DOESN'T have damage characteristic of one. i.e. Nurglings, they have (had? dunno, long time didnt play against) 5+ FNP against attacks with damage characteristic of 1. that's bolt rifles, power swords and other stuff that deals one damage, but against smites, even though they deal 1 damage multiple times, nurglings get no FNP, because thats not damage charactteristic.
      hope this answers your question, but if not, feel free to ask more :)

    Honestly, I knew more of these than I thought I would! Although the one about what you can and cannot do while performing an action is something I learned less than a week ago...after more than one game of having Celestine heal while in engagement range of enemy units (oops). I felt so bad about that mistake because it gave me a really unfair advantage. There was definitely new info for me here, though.
    The rules my group and I seem to struggle with most are the terrain rules. Keeping all the different traits straight and remembering which we've assigned to which terrain pieces can be difficult (especially the different types of cover). I know that's not super helpful feedback since you've already made an excellent terrain video (that helped me out a lot!) but it truly is what trips us up the most.

    I think, many people also think, they can reroll the number of mortal wounds caused by a smite (especially with a super smite and a bad result from the D6) thinking it is a damage roll, when it is only an effect of a psychic power.

    A couple strange rules arguments I have heard:
    Plasma inceptors I know I need to roll each model separately but do I need to roll each gun separately since if they kill themselves on the first gun they don’t get the rest of their shots? (This similarly would go for vehicles that have weapons that could kill themselves and they elect to shoot that weapon first )
    If I have a vehicle in combat with a blast weapon I can elect a target outside of the combat in case my other guns take me out of combat. Would this apply to units as well. Situations like a retributor squad being held in combat by a single model and the superior in the unit electing to try and pistol it away and seeing if she can free the big guns to shoot other elected targets.
    The minutia of combat movements. I have seen a lot of players who really understand the movements spin circles around those that don’t. Things like how a charge move you only need to get one model in engagement and after that the other models can kind of do what they want as long as they maintain coherency. While pile ins and consolidates and I think even heroic interventions all require closer to the closest model. There is some real jank you can pull when you understand a lot of these movements.
    Love your content keep on keep in’ on

    One question about Plasma blowing up (I am Dark Angels, nom nom nom Plasma) - ex :
    Helblasters with Assault 3 weapon. Out of the 3 shot on a model, 1 pops up. Model blows up in the Emperor's Glory. But what about the other 2 shots ? Do I get to roll the wound roll or all three shots are going to trash cause 1 hit did a 1 ?

    The who selects a unit first in the Fights Last..."sub-phase" has been on my mind for a while. I'm 100% down to accept that it's the Active Player, but I've yet to come across it in black & white. Where can I find that one?
    For the Strategic Reserves, your graphic was a bit off. Each mission designates which edge is the opponent's. The entire edge is the opponents edge, making the bottom right corner go up 6" for Turn 2. In turn 3, that edge doesn't become Strategic Reserves deployable, it's still their edge. The left side would also go all the way down (into the red) up until 6" from that edge (Turn 3). [Looks like all but the 3 short edge deployments, in GT, consider the long edges the players'. It's identified for each mission in Core & GT books]
    The eligible charge target's a solid one. It's mostly problematic from those that could roll 3D6 that it has to be brought up, around here anyway.
    One that has been frustrating to correct recently: Moving one model of an infantry unit in regards to Heavy Weapons & Bolter Discipline.
    "Subtract 1 from hit rolls if firing model is INFANTRY and its *unit* has moved this turn."
    "The shooting model is INFANTRY (excluding CENTURION models) and its *unit* Remained Stationary in your previous Movement phase."
    Emphasis on "unit". Wouldn't bother me if it was newer players, but it's been this way forever and experienced players are borkin' It up.

    Can I ask you a question - so I’ll use my example a hive tyrant and a swarm lord charge into a unit of 5 marines ( the plan was the swarm lord could of moved 3 inch into another unit and I was going to use the new stratagem to move the hive tyrant upto 6inch into another combat it was to render his tanks with a stay in combat or fall back scenario) but the marines were Congo lined straight line screen my swarm lord attacks first charging unit kills 4 - he removes 4 models that leaves my hive tyrant out of combat even if he moved his 3 inches I still wouldn’t make it into engagement range is it correct that the hive tyrant even though I won combat then can’t move any inches as he isn’t in combat, neither the 3 or 6 through the strat?

    As a new 40k player, there are many rules I get wrong. As you said in the beginning, the game is way overcomplicated. Here are some examples.
    The Casual ruleset bloat. References to Power Levels and Battle-forged armies are just confusing. It took a while before I realized that if you want to play the way everyone does, all armies are always battle-forged and power levels can be completely ignored (with at least one exception).
    Tournament rules. I have no idea why it was necessary to take some of the basic rules and put them in a separate rulebook. Possibly so that they can change over time. Which basic rules do as well, with FAQs.
    The Assault doctrine doesn't buff Assault weapons. Jesus, take the wheel.
    Everything about terrain, cover, elevation, and line of sight. Sometimes a piece of terrain completely blocks line of sight, but sometimes you can see through it if you have true LoS. Sometimes you need to see the model, other times you need to see the base. Sometimes you need to measure vertical distance, other times things are infinitely high cylinders. Sometimes cover gives a penalty to the to-hit roll, other times it gives a bonus to the armor save roll.

    Thanks for making this video - In matched play do models left in Deep Strike really count as destroyed after Turn 3? For example - I cannot deploy a Scion squad via Aerial Drop during T4 or T5 to retrieve data? I specifically see Strategic Reserves being called out but nothing about a model's ability.

    can you not re roll an exploding vehicle damage roll bc it's not a weapon damage roll? not sure I understand that part. Is it not considered a damage roll as listed in the command re roll allowance?
    Does this mean the same when rolling damage on a Smite? If you could clarify that would really be appreciated, thank you :)

    • @danielbrewster8642
      @danielbrewster8642  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My interpretation comes from the core rule book on "making attacks" Each part of the attack has a step from hit, wound, save, and finally damage. The MW from a smite or explosion are not a "damage roll" although they deal damage.
      I play thousand sons (so I would LOVE to be able to re-roll MWs from smite) but I don't think you can. There's no damage characteristic of a mortal wound, certain things just do a variable number of mortal wounds that are then taken as individual points of damage.
      And, if it makes you trust me any more, Goonhammer rules writers also say no to smite dmg rerolls

    • @alexsmith4212
      @alexsmith4212 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On one hand, Command Reroll determines specificaly which rolls can be rerolled. Vehicle explosion is a separate type of roll, so by that logic it cannot be rerolled, right? But then why do we have "Sabotaged Armory" Alpha Legion stratagem, which specifically says "add 3 to Vehicle explosion roll; it cannot be rerolled"?
