My recommendation for learning SB is to learn every aircraft and make an attempt to fly each to their max. As long as you know your opponent and their aircraft's capabilities (along with your own), your maneuvers will follow accordingly. The flying and gunnery of your own aircraft is something that comes with time but if you learn basic energy conservation and the capabilities of your enemy, everything else follows. The best qualities to have are being quick to react and confidence. Most of what I just said goes out the window when fighting Russians. Just fight like crazy with them. ;-)
I started getting back into simulator style combat earlier this year with War Thunder, and I can safely say I learned absolutely nothing from flying War Thunder sim. In fact almost everything I learned from flying in IL-2 1946, which is in my opinion, a superior simulator. Having flown BoS, 1946, DCS, etc I can no longer fly in War Thunder for one main reason: how absolutely atrocious the ballistics are. I can live with an absolutely ludicrously unrealistic amount of torque roll even at high speeds, but the fact I have lead to where I can't see the target on a very slight deflection angle is a complete deal breaker. This is a great video series and most of it applies to other sims, but my best advice I can give to beginners is to go get IL-2 1946 for $10 on steam, set up a quick dogfight, and practice until you can kick the ass of the ace difficulty AI.
EZ-Moka well bullets in real life fall to the ground, some sims have that in them like Arma 3 and others don't. I'm not sure if war thunder has that I think it does. so you have to be ahead plus account for gravity. I haven't played il2 much, I do have it though. I didn't like the way it played though.
war thunder has bullet drop. some weapons not so bad and others drop like bricks. Really depends and if you get good with big guns it can be very effective. They are clunky to use though. I can highly recommend 12.7mm as it hits hard enough to be easily deadly but it is fast enough to not require extreme leading. It is the best middle ground and remains effective at all BR in terms of versatility. 20mm or larger are VERY difficult to lead with so don't expect to just pick up and shoot 12 people down without any effort. A decent training craft is the German He-112 A-0 is a great 20mm training craft as it uses a single nose mounted 20mm cannon that can shred most fighter and since it is the only gun you have to focus on leading. Most planes it fights will die in a single shot on realistic and it isn't hard as far as 20mm's go to use though it is not as easy to use as a 12.7mm
IL" 1946 is a great simulator. I have been flying it for 17 years or so. I am getting the new IL2 sims, there seems to be a lot of poor players in those games, most with no situational awareness.
This is an old maneuver for combatting energy fighters. It takes practice because you have to turn and roll blind visualizing/guess where the energy fighter is after your maneuver.- Most energy fighters will come down on a bogie(you) on his six what happens is the bogie breaks hard and looses even more speed making him even more venerable to the energy fighter. So, what I do is fake the hard turn. I start my turn but just enough to avoid getting shot down, then I continue my banking to turn it into a barrel roll all in one maneuver keeping my airplanes nose up as soon as possible and get back to my original flight path in order to get any kind of shot off at the boomer as he is zooming away. This is a very difficult shot to pull off but most pilots will instinctively bank hard if he is taking hits from behind him. Of course you have to avoid sight fixation if he does turn because more than likely he was climbing and if you keep shooting at him a stall is very likely. Now if "if" there is two or more of them........
Great video for someone getting into sim! Well done. The breakdown between angles fighting and energy fighting was perfect. One of the most common things new pilots don't grasp.
+Layin_Scunion thank you very much. I really look forward to make that turnfight video. It will be nothing like most "stick to the scrotum" guys think it will be. A lot of energyfighting will be there :D
My only problem is aiming, I can get on somebodies six pretty easily, but I will fire every single bullet I have and get maybe 5-10 hits and they are never crits.
Ryan Gabler i have my sights on the target but i cant get my sights on him exactly, im just wobbling all over the place trying to get a good shot. If i use my rudder it gets wobbly, but if i dont its rlly hard to get my sights on him using only roll and pitch. I feel like my joystick is too semsitive
Tommy Lakasi I have the same problem as well. Although I know exactly where to aim from all the realistic battles, it is very difficult for me to get guns on target with my joystick. Maybe it becomes more natural as time progresses, but some tips would be nice.
@@tommylakasi3022 I had this issue as well. As I found out - the issue was in 2 things - 1) You should configure the sensitivity of each axis to 100% - otherwise with lower % , the game actually puts an artificial delay to your inputs, and it makes you overcompensate/undercompensate because of the delay in inputs - which makes you do the 8 movement (wobble of the sights around your target) 2) always check that you are set as realistic controls at airplane - otherwise the sensitivity is automatically is set to some default setting. and the issue reoccurs. After this point the aiming is muuuch easier, and no wobble. It does take time to adjust - about 2-3 days to that change.
Awesome video! I wish I will learn how to control the aircraft like you soon :D The way newbies control aircrafts is... well... far from perfection. You're flying so "smooth".
I started out in sim a week ago and while I was quite a competent energy fighter in rb i find it way to hard to find targets from a position 2k higher in sim. So for now im learning the ropes in my japanese easy to fly turn fight monsters(i know) hoping my spotting and tracking will get to a point i can go play with my precious germans again :)
Hey man, I actually had that problem for quite a while, but in EC its pretty easy to find enemies everybody tends to congregate around the AI bombers when they spawn in and do their bombing runs.
no and yes. Planes in the distant are a dot first. If you dont want to search for enemies with your eyes then dont play a gamemode without markers. And upvoting your comments is not underlining your point any more. You will find enemies if you follow my guides, you will get kills IF you want to learn. I got 10+ Kill Rounds without a death in EC back then. There are enough enemies to shot at. So many that u sometimes are glad that there aren't black dots above you.
Easy way to kill boom and zoom fighter is to simulate a hard turn when the plane comes from your 6 but only turn for only enough to convince your opponent and instead of turning you barrel roll getting your plane’s nose up as soon as possible to get off a shot. Often the Boom and zoomer will think that they are being B&Z and make a hard turn that slows them down. Of course this works best when you are on the deck because they have no way to dive and regain speed. So keep your speed up by faking a turn by banking and pulling back on the stick for a split second , then keep rolling all the way around to get on his six.
Quick question for you; how do you track your targets? looked at your gear list, didn't see trackir or a vr set. how ever you do it looks extremely natural.
The biggest barriers to sim are actually hardware. With a low res screen, you never see anyone (same for tank battles), but more importantly, without analogue rudder controls, it its really difficult to get your guns on target. I've got a nice big 1440p monitor now, but rudder pedals... damn they are expensive.
What I also find is that a fighter that is better at turn fighting against there opponent has an advantage when it comes to escorting or protecting an area because if they get engaged they can keep turning and keep doing there job were as a fighter that is better at energy fighting against there opponent can have to disengage or die if they loose to much energy or in order to maintain and energy advantage they have to break from there escort or any objective were they must stay close to it in order to gain an energy advantage.
+SkullKing11841 you have to escort differently when u want to energyfight. Best suited to escort bombers is a sweep infront of the bombers and a rear cover which flys 2k highter than the bomber.
What I am talking about is when the escorts get engaged whether or not they are close to the bombers or 2km higher. Which I would think a relative turn fighter should be doing as well, if you are to close to the bombers it will make it hard to counter BnZ attacks on the bombers. I'm not saying a relative energy fighter can't be effective while on escort I just think the turn fighter has some important advantages over the energy fighter.
All nice and cool, but i think most people have problems following bandit with the view controls rather than tactical choices. It may be wasd, mouse or a tracker but it does take skill to maneuver while maintaining view of the bandit at all times. The hardest being him on your six. One can dive and reclimb, but if he cant do that while looking backwards, he might as well stay on the deck.
First of all, nice video. Secondly, what do you use for free-look view? I saw also that you can look in-depth and out of depth. How? Do you have a head tracker or something? Third and last, is it me, or every War Thunder gameplay video from 2016 looks gorgeous? Did they downgrade the graphics since then?
I think he uses trackir. I don't have it cause it's expensive and I cant for the love of shit track aircraft when dogfighting. I have to guess where they are. Its painful.
@Sheriff's Sim Shack Thank you for the tutorial. One question: Many (beginner) aircraft no not appear to have aileron trim, making them incredibly tedious to fly without rudder pedals (by twisting my T.16000M). Which aircraft do have aileron trim, test flight appears to wrongly give all aircraft aileron trim)?
You can fixate the trim of the testflight with the "trim fixation button" it saves the current trim settings for the plane. Just trim your plane at a medium speed and fixate the trim. After a while you get used to the torque however and you can cancel it yourself.
Hi sheriff, this video is great and i think it will help me a lot, but, regarding to your actual gameplay. Do you get close to your screen for zooming or you use a button? thanks :)
Ease off on your joystick. Learn to make smooth movements when you turn. It's like turning with your car at high speeds. You don't want to turn your steering wheel as quickly as you can, because you'll go out of control.
Alfadas fire Also keep your speed high, turning at high speeds makes it almost impossible for you to spin, you can pull the joystick as far back as you can to do the turn and your plane wont stall, but at lower speeds even the slightest maneuvers can send you into a spin
My biggest hate in sim battles is not being able to fly the plane I want to and you have to earn spawn points in new to sim and so find it hard to get kills let alone kill a higher BR plane with an experienced pilot and I just find myself getting bored of dying and loosing lions coming across a spitfire mkv whilst I’m in a 109e1 the guy had 8 kills and no deaths as a novice I was an easy kill every time
I don't really think turn fighters are waiting for there enemy to make a mistake (you could often say the same thing about energy fighters killing turn fighters), it just comes to good tactics and working your way above all of the energy fighters and then diving on them and if they disengage and get away with there superior dive speed then either try and stay above them and engage later or go engage another target, you have just forced an enemy out of the fight for a time so there is less to deal with.
It's just cus Ur not good i don't mean to be offensive u just need to practice I used to play controller which isn't impossible but considerably harder I moved to mnk I average at 15 kills per game it's just practice
hello again..i use a ps4 and the head tracking camera is horrible...so i resort to the hat switch to look around...do you know of any other device for looking around..thanks
My biggest issue is that I always lose control of my plane after trying to make a sharp turn. so every time I'm trying to evade or go after an enemy I more or less end up smashing into the ground. What am I doing wrong here?
+Thomas Wellstein pulling to hard on the stick. You pull more than the plane can take. Basically you move your wings out of the airstream. Called a "stall". Move your plane in smooth consistent movements and that behaviour will be one of the past.
TrackIR friend, infra red head tracking on a headset with a clip and a motion tracker mounted like a web cam to follow your head at a higher threshold.
mmmm so i start watch this video and i see u use a lot trim, that the compensation but how you know to use it right. is it to provide stall or more to get your plane safe when start engage ennemy? because i have to admit i don't use it exept to correct the prop moove :)
+Sheriff's Sim Shack ok ok thx... well with mouse and keyboard i cant use it too much and i have to learn more how to handle. but in ur manoeuver i saw that you play with joystick. more soft and controlled one ;)
Well i follow your advice, reduce mouse sensibility, and be patient. And i have to admit, it start to pay. I also watch your vids to make more softy manoeuver and it work too, less stall more fun and dogfight ^^. Last time 2 kills in F4U-1c corsair (for the big guns helll yeaahhh) and also play the Spit Mk IX (US one) and make 2 strike too. But i still got a problem that sometime when i make moove and i m on the side like in dogfight, i can't bring my nose down exept if i came back on horizontal and push nose down or if i put my pilot head down then put nose down.... Only got this with F4U, and F8F not spit. I also try germans, well hate them :p so i stay in japanese, british and USA tree but love russian sometimes :p Thx for advice and keep going ^^ Oh and plz if u can make a D520 or D521 video in SB it could be aweeesome (also get 3 stike in it
I've got an question in tank sim i often fly out an plane and its all nice and good untill i try to turn towards a plane (attacking) and out of thin air i fall into an flat spin? why
I have some questions for simulator players 1)What is best set up for a joystick( i have logitech extreme 3d pro) 2)I don't have TrackIR, how can i do? 3)What is the best school plane for a noob like me? P.S. I am italian and my english isn't good, sorry
+Mattia Gabella I also would like to know this. The annoying thing about the logitech is it has a kind of paddle for the throttle control, and you can't set it to only apply 100% throttle. It always wants to go full WEP if you push the paddle fully upwards
+hagakure81 I've actually made my throttle only go to 100%, requiring a button to WEP. First, I set the option to Yes, then I changed the throttle axis Multiplier to 1.04 and Correction to -2%. I also bound a button on my stick to Maximum Value for the axis. Now, I'm not 100% sure this will work for everyone, but I don't see why it shouldn't.
When I start the cunduring front games I spawn in with a circle and another circle in it to control my airplane. I saw that when you where playing you didn't have that and I was wondering if you know how I should det rid of it?
+Sebastian Ethan do you mean the Display of the mouse joy? If yes and you play with a joystick you can select another control method like realistic controls in the menue.

I know many pilots who dont use headtracking at all and they doing good. I started myself with the hatstick on my joystick and did well. But it is helpful, reduces workload and increases the immersion. Added the question as a "FAQ" in the description.
HoboTango its a fact that War thunders flight models for sim are just the arcade models with higher stall rate nothing close to real sim its a arcade sim
this is all great n all... but.... HOW dose your gameplay look so smooth for first person???! what is your setup? are you using track IR or some other similar setup??? are you flying SB with mouse or joystick? all these things make A WORLD of difference as you can see your game play footage is super smooth and it seems you have ZERO problems simply tracking your target with the camera... this is REALLY nearly impossible to do effectively UNLESS you have a well setup Track IR system
+Doom Cannon I answered a similar question with this: "I use Track IR 5. Its a piece of hardware which translates my head movement into the game. Yes its unusual to use the mouse as a joystick be it can work. I leave a link which describes how to setup a mouse joy. They are some really successfull veterans who use Mouse joy. forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/289286-sb-basic-flying-mouse/ Another reason why it looks so smooth is of course expierience.

You can fixate the trim of the testflight with the "trim fixation button" it saves the current trim settings for the plane.
Just trim your plane at a medium speed and fixate the trim. After a while you get used to the torque however and you can cancel it yourself.
Thank you very much.
I just tried with the He 112 V-5 and it's much easier to fly now.
Very good video, i learn a lot. Than you
how do u get ur camera so smooth
I think he uses mouse
Very good presentation....thank you so much.
Great tutorial, very clear and easy to understand as a beginner. Could I ask what kind of head tracking you use in this video? Thanks!
Hi sheriff, this video is great and i think it will help me a lot, but, regarding to your actual gameplay. Do you get close to your screen for zooming or you use a button? thanks :)
+Kastro44 I recommend a button.
Hi sheriff, how did you set-up the text in 7:24 when the T-4-1 radio was commanding?
www.reddit.com/r/Warthunder/comments/3873tp/coverme_post_your_altitude_in_simulator_battles/
I wonder if you could talk about how to avoid flatspins or spins in general? One problem I have with Sim battles, is getting in spins...
Ease off on your joystick. Learn to make smooth movements when you turn. It's like turning with your car at high speeds. You don't want to turn your steering wheel as quickly as you can, because you'll go out of control.
+Gunblastz thanks. it does make sense. will try it!
+Alfadas fire Glad I could help!
+SkullKing11841 true, but if u end up below and slow u cant dive away etc
Why your plane do not shake from right to left when turning ?
dogfighting in simulator with mouse is impossible
buster117 I play with mouse and i'm perfectly fine with it. I don't understand why people can't do it.
Touchpad for me
It's just cus Ur not good i don't mean to be offensive u just need to practice I used to play controller which isn't impossible but considerably harder I moved to mnk I average at 15 kills per game it's just practice
NOW THIS IS PROPER WAR THUNDER!!! Not that arcade / realistic shit when you only need to WEP all the time and move your fucking mouse.
How do you track your targets? looked at your gear list, didn't see trackir or a vr set. how ever you do it looks extremely natural.
hello again..i use a ps4 and the head tracking camera is horrible...so i resort to the hat switch to look around...do you know of any other device for looking around..thanks
really useful video!
Great video!
What are your joystick settings to fly a spit, i can’t find a way to fly this plane well, can you help me?
I never had special settings for the Spits, however they fly like a bitch by now.
Sheriff's Sim Shack , i wonder what are your settings? It looks very smoot always, thanks for video’s they help me alot
Great advice - thanks.
How you you put your head in the cockpit up and down and forward and backwards because i only can look around.
TrackIR friend, infra red head tracking on a headset with a clip and a motion tracker mounted like a web cam to follow your head at a higher threshold.
U can also set buttons in the controls so u can move ur head
Grammercy, danke shön, merci... wathever. Do those techniques apply in arcade battles as well?
I barely figured out that I have to gradually increase the throttle in order to take off.
+cobalT those things are really depending on the plane. With most planes it's possible to throttle up to full power with no problem
+Sheriff's Sim Shack Yeah,I was in a custom game,1v1 with my friend, and we took out the german Reserve fighters xD
mmmm so i start watch this video and i see u use a lot trim, that the compensation but how you know to use it right. is it to provide stall or more to get your plane safe when start engage ennemy? because i have to admit i don't use it exept to correct the prop moove :)
just to keep the plane stable. For shooting. for the most part. Sometimes to climb or to fly straight without stressing my wrist to much.
I also try germans, well hate them :p so i stay in japanese, british and USA tree but love russian sometimes :p
Thx for advice and keep going ^^
Oh and plz if u can make a D520 or D521 video in SB it could be aweeesome (also get 3 stike in it
What setup is best for joystick so you don't make those too sharp maneuvers and get into flat spin? Talking mainly about sensitivity
th-cam.com/video/PWhIfHemW5Y/w-d-xo.html
thanks ^^
I've got an question in tank sim i often fly out an plane and its all nice and good untill i try to turn towards a plane (attacking) and out of thin air i fall into an flat spin? why
+pingu the real mlg you pull too hard and you stall a wing.
Subbed.
Good video
I have some questions for simulator players
1)What is best set up for a joystick( i have logitech extreme 3d pro)
2)I don't have TrackIR, how can i do?
+Elgonidas maybe something for me actually
+Sheriff's Sim Shack after watching your latest video, I'd say yes. :P
+Sheriff's Sim Shack
Can you Tell me a good school plane to learn To play the FRB?
One problem is I have big ping and packet loss because I live in Asia and Asia server took awhile to join battle
How do you go in free flight mode?! I can't find it any ware!
Very Nice!
Start with this: Art of the kill by the F-16 ex-pilot Pete Bonani: th-cam.com/play/PLB06E28775F0662AE.html
Hello is a black widow flightstick any good? i dont know what kind of flightstick to get right now so some advice would be really helpful
+Derek John Looks cheap, but I have no idea. Maybe enough for war thunder
Sheriff's Sim Shack Well can you recommend me any good ones?
I have a Thrustmaster Hotas X and I can recommend it.
When I start the cunduring front games I spawn in with a circle and another circle in it to control my airplane. I saw that when you where playing you didn't have that and I was wondering if you know how I should det rid of it?
that's torque and prop wash! you have to counter that with your rudder. apply rudder in the opposite direction and throttle up.
no not that, I now how to take off and stuff
+Sebastian Ethan do you mean the Display of the mouse joy? If yes and you play with a joystick you can select another control method like realistic controls in the menue.
I use mouse
so I cant change it?
Hey sherif how do you change that thing you have now for simulator like why don't you have that dot and the circle
Like that's how you move now it's hard to use for me
Because I use a mouse for sim
+That air soft Kid sry I don't know what u exactly mean
Thats what sim is like with mouse and keyboard if you don't want that get a joystick
How is your controll so smooth? Mine is woobling so strong
Does anyone know how to get out of a flat spin with mouse controls? i'm a newbie, and this is the biggest problem i face everytime. :p
Dose anyone know what's going on with VR for PS4? I'm SO UPSET the whole reason I bought the PS4VR was for War thundet.. I spent a week trying to figure out how to set it up in the endless settings, obviously never got it hooked up.
Is war thunder even working with the vr of the ps4?
@@SheriffsSimShack I don't know. Before I bought it I saw a bunch of videos showing VR on PS4 but after I bought it and was having trouble finding anything on how to do it. PLEASE HELP
I hardly can provide support for ps4. I have noch clue
do those rules apply when you are not using a K/M cause it sure in hell dont work when you are playing with a joystick
+TheGiftedKJ32090 this is played with a joystick
Nice video :)
do you use TrackIR and would you recommend it for a sim starter player?
1. Yes, and 2.No. For the start a hatswitch is sufficient.
What I want to know is how you move your head around like that. Cant do that with the mouse or keyboard
+HoboTango
I use Track IR 5. Its a piece of hardware which translates my head movement into the game. There are a few similar (and cheaper) solutions around.
It is needed to play Sim? No its not. I know many pilots who dont use headtracking at all and they doing good. I started myself with the hatstick on my joystick and did well.
But it is helpful, reduces workload and increases the immersion.
Added the question as a "FAQ" in the description.
Sheriff's Sim Shack Alright thanks for the quick answer !
One comment is enough...
Duke Duke You are entitle to your opinion and I respect that.
+Doom Cannon
I answered a similar question with this:
"I use Track IR 5. Its a piece of hardware which translates my head

Then the thing with the mosue. Yes its unusual to use the mouse as a joystick be it can work. I leave a link which describes how to setup a mouse joy.
They are some really successfull veterans who use Mouse joy.
forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/289286-sb-basic-flying-mouse/
Another reason why it looks so smooth is of course expierience.
Very useful thx,
3:00 how did that hit?
He fired invinsible ammo first which have hit. Tracers have been fired after them.
@@dallarian8687 The tracers appeared right after he fired his first invisible ammo, so it wouldn't have been that far off from where you see the tracers go.
The belts are fixed. Some bullets are invisible. Also network stuff could play a role
How come my plane rolls to the left without doing anything
mpj 1780 torque
Danke schön!
Having to point the plane down just so you can see in front of you!? If you have altitude over your enemy, the cockpits in the way of aiming. To me the visibility feels/sees like a child trying, and failing to look over a steering wheel; like driving a car, buyt not being able to see any of the road in front of you!! Even with , or . + 8. Takes me ages to even find anyone
its almost like reality
@@SheriffsSimShack Well then in reality, you can't see where you're going. :D
I'd always imagined you'd have the same sort of view as you do driving a car
so mouse players cant do some of those acrobatics?
+Jhey Brent Bondoc all of the mouse users can do them.

No dislikes . freakkin boss
Why dose it take so long to get a game session
because the SB mode in WT is nearly dead. Well depends on the tier i guess.
Brilliant! Love the vid Sheriff. What software are you using to record and edit?
+Greg Todd Dxtory, Premiere Pro CC
i have a hard time with the mouse in simulator
Do you use a Joystick or your mouse?
+MrAetgf Joystick!
+Sheriff's Sim Shack What joystick do you use?
Thrustmaster Hotas X
Title should be : "why not to turn fight"
+TRBRY no. Pls watch the turn fight tutorial. It is a valid option.
I guess it helps you have an IR headtracker...
helps. But not a nessesity at the begninning.

Hey i saw you in battle today

+Mahmoud Kahilan yep i remember, but I was to tired so I quit.
+Der Sheriff lol, i am watching your tutorials and i am learning so much. so i subscribed.
nice! :)
3:01 ......
+HueHuey whops
+HueHuey Looking closely it did fly into it by the looks of it. possibly past convergence
its him. Thats the reason he is so shocked :D
And the commentary doenst help ether :D
That kill at 3:03 really is bullshit , you didnt even hit him, your tracers went way passed him.
Not every single Bullet has tracers. it is possible that the first burst was entirely without tracers. But yes I was surprised as well as he was going down so fast.
Your sights did not even cross his path, not even close.
of course... i led his flight path... but anyway I dont have the feeling that I could convince you.
That wasnt a complete random kill but yes it was kinda lucky as he was perfectly in the convergence and the bullets had no tracer.
oh those Germans...
yes?
You WEP always haha
This shit isnt made for mouse and keyboard...
*_ YeZzZai _* but u can still play it with that
da ve yea but its shitty
*_ YeZzZai _* i played it. With friends it is quite fun
who does not like ?????
Well I would play but this game is such bulllshit, someone shoots my tail where no fuckingggg fuel is i get a fire. Not only that, don’t forget 7.92 is always superior to 39mm

Quick question for you; how do you track your targets? looked at your gear list, didn't see trackir or a vr set. how ever you do it looks extremely natural.
+Broken Iron Sights earlier comment above he said he does use trackir
