    Andy your detailed and real life reviews of both the RPHA90S and RPHA70 ,including com installation are brilliant .With both these helmets being replaced with newer versions ,and sales being on, I have purchased both to replace my aging lids .So far I've only used the RPHA70 and its very quiet and comfortable .The 90S may need thicker cheek pads ,as like you said it does fit differently to the RPHA70 . Thanks for your reviews that helped me choose these helmets .

      Andrew, being a fan of, and had the C1,2,3 and 3 Pro, which C4 did you have? (the original C4, the new C4 Pro or the new C4 "Basic" (which is the new Pro minus the built in comms)). I'd be interested to here your opinions/comparisons! :)

    • @andrewbooth4341
      @andrewbooth4341 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattmutane5502 Hi Matt, i have the C4 Pro and have had the C3 and C3 pro, C3 pro fitted better as i think they altered the head lining a bit. Nothing is plusher than the C4 pro gorgeous interior. I think the best feature of the HJC is its weight, i dont think the C4 Carbon can match it there but the C4 Carbon certainly feels quality but very very expensive.

    • @mattmutane5502
      @mattmutane5502 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andrewbooth4341 Thx for the details! :) I liked the C3 PRO so much, and the 1st gen C4 was horrible and expensive (and I didn't want the build in comms), so I bought another C3 PRO for when this C3 PRO wears out, and for silly cheap money from FC-Moto, pre-brexit. (Now, I'd consider the C4 "Basic" which as I said, is the newer C4 PRO with the improvements/fixes, but without the built in comms (I use a PackTalk Bold).

    • @andrewbooth4341
      @andrewbooth4341 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mattmutane5502 Yes i have the Pactalk Bold great bit of kit, the comms on the C4 pro which i have is pants compared to Pactalk. C4 pro Basic makes sense thats why i went for the HJC carbon rather than the C4 pro Carbon as you are just paying for something you dont use.

      I experience R90 buckle to cut into adam's apple. Horrible ergonomics. I used it on just a few comuting rides.
      Plus problems with too big buckle cushions. This is not usable for touring.
      Now what should I do with it? Sell it -50% and lose money?
      I have competitors flipup, my older helmet, without that problem at all. Strap fits just under chin. R90 strap is moved few extra mm closer to the neck.
      I have RPHA 70 COPTIC, as well.
      In my RPHA70 I do not have buckle problem at all. I would like to know if HJC had received many complaints like mine
      That being said.... dear Mike do not buy R90

    Run Run! Andy! At least you can ride, It is snowing now but for most of Jan it was single minus degrees c and the rodes were clear. I did see one brave guy out in his bike but mine stayed in shed. Now, winter is back in Northern Ontario Canada. I have owned an HJC but must have been 20 years ago, like that a budget lid like HJC has refined its product. I will look at it this spring as my LS2 is very noisy. Thanks Andy. I like the yellow.

    Based on other reviews, I think the "for day use only " Is based on the potential for the pinlock insert to increase glare from lights at night. Just another bit of fine print to reduce liability.

    Nice video Andy, many thanks! :) The Pinlock "Daytime use only" thing is very odd! When it's getting dark and cold, that's when you need the Pinlock more than ever! In case it's of interest, the C3 PRO Pinlock has no such wording on it. On the weight front, would you trade the lighter weight for having the internal sun visor? Personally, I would go for the internal visor every time! (of course, it seems, with the HJC, if you want to spend the money, you can have both...). Other advantages of flip up is not ever needing to take it off in petrol stations/shops, or at passport/border control, which is very handy :) Flip ups are great for people with glasses, too...

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much Matt! Apparently it's because the light ztransferrence is reduced to JUST below the legal limit for visors! Who knew! I'm sure that, as ever, there has been some kind of legal case and now the manufacturers are starting to protect themselves against future sueings. I really enjoy the benefits of the flip up, and the sun visor is a real plus. I'd have to think long and hard about where to go, although the RPHA 70 Carbon seems light and with visor! Perhaps trimming down my 'on-lid' setup would help too. I'm sure that the integrated Sena system, would shave a bit of weight off of the Sena 10C evo. Much to think about for the coming season.

    Thanks for the vid...I was just going to buy one of these, and viola, here's a review of it. Although I didn't catch a comment about the aerodynamics, I suspect it's pretty decent in that regards, dissipating any buffeting or turbulence easily?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Tony. Yeah I realise that i didn't really talk about aerodynamics. But you can take from that the fact that it's because the aerodynamics didn't spring to mind as they are so good! If they'd been bad, I definitely would have mentioned it, but the helmet has shown no buffeting or turbulence since I've been using it.

HJC in the US have sent me three sets that have all cracked. I would encourage anyone wearing this helmet to check theirs for cracking. Great review. I bought the previous model i90 last year. Most of the features of the new one minus the exhaust vent and doesn’t have the center visor opener. I payed £160 which was quite a reduction. Only complaint was horrendous wind noise on left side. I found it was the tint visor switch aperture . I put a small piece of gaffer tape over the hole and now perfect. When I can be bothered, I might take the lining out as there must be something come adrift.

      I totally agree Gren. As flip fronts go, this one is very impressive weight wise. But with the cameras and stuff, that 200g is still noticeable. The Nishua is about 1200g with the visor and peak on, so almost half a kilo less. Surely this means that whatever might supersede the RPHA 70 could be even lighter still!

      @@AndyManCam don't really know what will supersede it, the RPHA 70 is the sportstouring lid, I've also got a shoei neotec 2 and I have to say that the shoei is a truly amazing lid, the build quality is second to none as is the comfort, the thing with flip up lids is they will always be a little bit heavier than a non flip up just the nature of the beast I'm afraid, like both of my lids, if I'm just out and about blasting the local roads then it's always the HJC, but if I'm out all day or touring around then my lid of choice everytime is the shoei neotec 2 because of its ease of use...shoeis warranty is 5yrs u can't argue with that....one more thing, ur carbon lid, well uve been wearing that for a long time and are now very used to it, the HJC will only get better with time...

    Great review Andy, I have just recently switched from my second Nishua Enduro Carbon to a flip-front helmet, I went for the Schuberth C4 Pro Carbon, am very happy with it so far, although had some teething issues while I got used to it. Sadly it isn't legal to ride with it flipped up and maybe my chin is huge, but also is a very tight space and requires 2 hands to shut it down fully.

    Excellent vid as per usual. 👍 Probably because it's new but it's not listed on the SHARP helmet safety scheme. All the other HJC RPHA helmets listed by SHARP score 3 out of 5. Appreciate the SHARP ratings are not the be-all and end-all and it's a UK testing programme but it's something I rely upon as a base measure. I suppose if you're in the USA you're rely upon Snell testing. The DOT standard is a manufacturers declared safety rating and I therefore suggest is similar to having the fox in charge of the hen house. My understanding is the best safety rating is the recently upgraded ECE 22.06 (United Nations test, nothing to do with the EU) which has a greater range of impact testing and rotational forces, and takes into account sun visors, etc. It's all a bit of a minefield and when you stick cameras, etc on the crash helmet it probably makes all the impact and rotational safety all pretty irrelevant! 😬

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks MrC. The SHARP ratings are certainly a very nice to have. This one must be yet to test. Hoping it'll fare better than 3/5! Agree with you on the DOT standard. If it's self governed, it can easily be tricksed, and less easily be trusted! You're of course very right about the cameras and intercoms. Although in my limited experience, they all rip off very easily. I've had cameras fly off just from dropping the lid from the seat! :D

      Working in the bike trade and getting training on Pinlocks, I actually know the answer! It's because the Pinlock is an additional layer to the visor, it blocks an additional 10 per cent of light, which when most visors only allow about 85-95% light through in the first place, would make it illegal to use at night. However, I have never, ever heard of someone getting stopped for a Pinlock unless it was a tinted one at night, but even then, it's more difficult to see a Pinlock compared to a dark visor

      I have one RPHA 70 and I'm looking to buy maybe the RPHA 90S. After + 20.000 kms I'm a bit disappointed with it : not as quiet as you might think, but the worst - and the reason why I'm really tired of it - is the pinlock.. pretty much ineffective at low temperatures, rainy days or foggy conditions. I bought a new one because I fought the first one was expired, but the brand new one does exactly the same. I'm forced to spray some anti fog spray in it constantly. That said, if you are a good weather rider, the 70 is ok and a lot cheaper than the 90. If you ride all weather don't go with the 70.

      Wow, thank you for your kind answer and for the advice! Highly appreciated!
      The RPHA 70 was on the top of my list, as I thought it is truly silent! Fogging is also a problem, of course, as I do ride in rain as well! Though I have a seasonal license plate from March until November, so I’m skipping the winter months, I hate a rusty motorcycle, even at the tiniest rust spot my OCD kicks in and that means several hours spent away from my family in the garage, addressing the “rust issue”! So no winter riding for me!
      Aaaanyway, my touring helmet is 4 years from ld now and I already had a little “misshap” in it, I also started to develop tinnitus, and that scares the shite out of me, so I decided to get the most silent helmet that comes in at a reasonable cost, hence the list of RPHA 70, RPHA 90S, Schuberth E1, or the Arai Tour X4.
      Ok, so based on your feedback, I will probably strike out the RPHA 70 from my short list! Thank you for your honest reply/advice!

      @@AndyManCam we sure are 😂 I watched your video and it was because of your review I decided to purchase the 90S in carbon. I just had my first ride in it today and it's amazing! Coming from an Arai it's surprisingly good and way quieter. I love it! Thanks for the great video! Would you recommend the GoPro side mount? Have you since tried centrally mounting your GoPro? I have a Y piece mount on my Arai chin and was thinking about flipping the Y so I have access to the button... might work, who knows!

    Andy, how the devil are you! Try wearing a chest mount camera harness, instead of a helmet mount. It will give you steadier shots, and change your life forever!

      @@AndyManCam I bought a Scorpion Carbon 1400 Air helmet because I wanted a light-weight helmet - don't we all! It's an excellent helmet, and the XL version weighed in at a very neck friendly 1450g. Then I attached the excellent DJI Osmo Action camera, using a SmallRig metal cage and a chin strap. That little lot added 292g to the weight of the helmet, giving a total weight of 1742g, and it's all hanging off you chin. I thought what's the point in buying a carbon helmet, is now the weight of a flip-up! I also never liked the end result I got using a chin mount. The video footage tended to be all over the place, because when riding you have to constantly move your head about, and I found it to be just a little bit too distracting.
      I was fed up with all the extra weight and the video footage, so I tried a chest harness, and it was a revelation. Immediately, you notice the video footage is far smoother, and not as jerky; it's a bit like using a gimbal! Once you get the camera angle right, which is easy to do via your camera app, it stays in position far better than a any chin mount, because you're constantly gripping the handlebars in a fixed riding position. I found it was perfect for getting the dash and the road ahead in shot, you tend not to film the sky all the time! And, by moving your chest and shoulders slightly you can alter the angle of the shot, if required. The harness is also very easy to remove, because they all use quick release clips. Overall, I found it to be a much better solution than a chin mount.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The effect certainly is a far smoother video. You're not at all wrong about the weight thing. My Nishua was about 1200g on it's own. After the cameras, microphones and intercom it was over 1800g!! 🤦🏻‍♂️ I'm going to get some custom earbuds made to ditch the speakers and the Hero 8 saves a fair bit with it's lack of cage. Plus the Packtalk slim puts the battery at the back, which really helps with balancing out the camera on the front. So now I'm about 300g lighter and it feels even lighter still. Winning! Still, it could be lighter!! Let's try this chest thing out!...

    • @soulrebelno1
      @soulrebelno1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndyManCam See how you get on with the chest mount, but I can't see me ever going back to a chin mount, they're too bulky and just too heavy. I don't know what you use for recording the audio, but I'm look at external audio recorders, something like the Zoom H4n Pro, or a Tascam DR-05X, with a decent Lavalier microphone and a dead cat wind muff. A few motovloggers use them, and the results are excellent. You clap at the beginning of a recording, and the audio spike produced allows you to line up the audio track with the video track in post-production. Or, you could take a clapperboard with you! Not only do you get superior audio, but it allows you to move away from the camera, and still get good audio. It also makes manipulating the audio track with the video track far easier. If you put another audio recorder in your backpack, or put it under the seat with the mic fitted externally, you can then pick up the exhaust beautifully and mix that in as well, and we all love a good exhaust sound!
      Also, check out the DJI Osmo action camera, I think it's better than the overpriced GoPro's. The GoPro HERO8 overheats and will shut down, Andy/TMF has to put his in the fridge to get it to work again!

    an awful lot of whistling being heard throughout for something so quiet?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don’t forget that noise by the mouth (where the mic is) is very different to where the ears are. I couldn’t hear any whistling while riding, and of course i couldn’t possibly have known til after that the mic was picking up whistling.

      Except they’re not! This is the quietest helmet I’ve ever used! Most of the noise comes from under the helmet. With flip ups, the hole can be smaller and as a result, the helmet is quieter.

      I actually used to believe that the flip ups were noisier too. But that was from experiecne of my Caberg from 2007. The fit and finish nowadays is so much better, that there aren't any wind causing gaps and seams anymore. Plus smaller head hole to boot! Winning!
