  • Our 2008 Toyota Sequoia's OEM backup camera stopped working when going into reverse with our JVC KW-M865BW.. I wanted to make this video to save anybody who has this issue a lot of time.

Back story to give some context how this all happened because a simple problem can quickly get convoluted when someone doesn't understand how something works together
    - We got rear ended -- everyone is OK!
    - Dropped vehicle off at an insurance approved shop to replace rear bumper shell, sensors, and tow hitch receiver. The backup camera was working when we dropped it off
    - Picked up the vehicle and the camera no longer works in reverse. The camera could be manually turned on
    - Bring the vehicle back a few days later, service tech hook hooks up scan tool, and tells us the camera isn't being recognized...He finds a wire in the top tailgate cut, and claims this is why the backup camera isn't working...He won't touch it and says insurance won't fix it...It's time to play not it!
    - I tell him the headunit was installed by a pro car audio installer -- the camera is not hooked up the way he thinks to the headunit...He doesn't know how to fix it
    - Advises us to take to our car audio installer, identify the fix, and bring back to them to do the fix and bill our insurance ... Hard stop here, we were done wasting our time with this shop
    - The car audio installer shows me what's wrong problem solved in 5 min

Yes! Thank you. I was going crazy trying to figure out why my backup camera wasn't working after I took it to the shop.

@@mattbradyfitness [not to spam you but really encourage you] My van is 12 years old now, young really. Got the Sony head unit, installed with all recommendations from [small nice guys] stereo store. My younger days I'd be haggles for $5 here and there, today... I just accept their prices and let their small business make some money. The unit hooks up my Android, Work iPhone and Wife's iPhone. Very well worth it. Spend your next 5, 10?, Sienna years with a little more tech.

How did the cable become disconnected? Did you order custom wires is this a custom backup camera?

No, the service tech unplugged it during his scan tool run...

I'm an audio install tech... and I've never used the odb2 port plug. I make all my connections so this stuff can't happen and have upset/confused customers
