    Just because you can go faster, probably doesn't mean you should. Especially if you're towing something

    • @craigcrushme
      @craigcrushme 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yep! The 'trick' is always to have some acceleration in reserve (irresp' of the towing vehicle's performance capabilities) in order that 'snaking' i nduced by overrun can be 'tensioned back out again' by briefly 'gassing it'.

      482lost any trailer with brakes (ie over 750kg) should require a special licence to tow. How can anyone justify driving a Toyota Yaris or similar small car, then being able to jump in a V8 Landcruiser with a 3.5 ton caravan on the same licence, with no additional training?

    I've done this(up to the 16 seconds in the video and then drove out of it), very humbling experience. Wife was squeezing my leg hard. Kids in back seat 'Dad! What are you doing?'. I just lifted the pedal a little a kept it straight, feathering the throttle while the speed came down. Scariest thing I ever did and I felt like a real asshole for putting family and others in danger. Incorrect loading(due to 'go fever' to beat holiday traffic), and overtaking a boat on a trailer, totally preventable. Been towing our caravan for years, no problems. Got complacent. Loading up better, and excercising patience/respect I'm pretty sure it won't occur again. Anyone who says speed out of the sway hasn't been in the situation..

    As a driver who pulls a caravan all the time due to living travelling around I find on most motor ways of 110kms I travel at 90kms max I get passed by many caravans like I'm standing still. I might piss some people off in a hurry but I want to live. Most truck drivers understand and I make it easy for them to pass me and I try to contact them to help them pass safely. On country roads I stay around 80kms. You can feel the air moving the van when being passed by trucks so at high speed you can lose control. Just slow down a bit and you should arrive safely. You will get to enjoy your trip.

      As a truck operator I get annoyed by the slow speed on single lane highways 70-90 only to have the vans speed up 100+ on the dual lanes then slow down again on the single lanes. If you could delay accelerating to allow the build up of trucks behind to pass that would be considerate. We are limited to 100 kph and when stuck behind the 'snails' it's not so much lost time but extra fuel being burned carrying 30+ tonnes. I travel Mackay to Canberra and 1 after the other mostly the same. Let us pass please.

    • @tarkjones
      @tarkjones 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kevviekevvie8440 Could be a factor, but trucks throw out a pretty big bow-wave of air, which most people don't really think about. When it hits the side of the camper, it pushes it away, then as you pass the bow wave you enter an area of lower pressure, which sucks the camper back in that direction. At a reasonable speed for the size of the camper and tow vehicle, it's not a problem, but if you are going too fast and with a larger tow-to-trailer difference, you can end up in trouble like this. Campers have a big cross-section and they are fairly light for their profile - the wind affects them more than most trailers. I've had trailer minor sway start from a heavy cross wind caused by coming over a bridge past a hill into an open space and it's had nothing to do with loading. I know the exact weight of my trailer, truck and what's on each axle and I keep it all within specs. You just have to be ready to react to it and slow down.

My idiot friend drove too damn fast on a foggy night and spun the car out of control. Hit a ditch and got stuck there, couldn't get out. It was in the middle of nowhere & completely dark. No cars passed by until minutes later... it was a truck. Driver stopped, got some harnesses out of his truck, got under the car (it's a Holden) to hook it up and pulled it out of the ditch. All that while 3 of us stood there watching him do all theh work (yeah, I feel bad). He didn't want anything from us. He just told us to drive safely and moved on. God bless him.

Slow down to get out of it and quit aggressively oversteering to try to compensate. Then go figure out what your hitch weight and load distribution are, if you still have a caravan.

    It makes you wonder what would possess anyone to do that.
    Some people think as long as you got power you can do anything.
    Even being overtaken by a semi can cause the van to sway.
    Sadly people don't see airflow.
    The semi is pushing air both sides of the cab just like all vehicles do.
    You end up with loads of air and higher pressure between truck and van and lower pressure on the other side of the van and this pushes the van to one side and starts the sway.
    It is similar to the air on a wing of a plane, high pressure under the wing and low over equals lift.
    In the truck scenario it is exactly the same principle but working in a horizontal plane and not vertical.
    Also remember the van is like a pendulum, when it swings back it will swing the other side as seen by here.

      Whenever I get a new van, I take it up to 60 k's and try to swerve the car abit to see how the van reacts. Does it go straight instantly when you stop moving the steering wheel. I increase the speed by 10 and try again. If it looks like it gets squerily at 90 then never exceed 90. and get your balance checked. Check your tow ball weight.

    Stick at a safe distance behind a road train, but still close enough to enjoy the broken wind they create. It'll save you fuel plus you'll essentially have a 100+Tonne Bullbar... They stick on 100km/hr (maximum tow speed). Makes your trip cheaper and relatively stress free. Plus if you have a two way, have a yarn with him, it's always nice to hear peoples stories and what they're doing...

I find 80 km/h the safe speed in straight roads, but I know my friend likes to push it... He can drive up to 120 km/h with he's car and we have the same pull weight (2.2t).. Short story, he still lives but I would never allow it, if I was inside my friend car.

  • @LinuxGalore
    @LinuxGalore 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    the poor bugger did everything wrong, the driver tried to compensate for the caravan wandering all over the road by doing the same with the car and then the driver sealed the deal by slowed down using his brakes too hard. If they had just kept going straight and given it a bit of gas if below 100km/h to force the caravan straight or taken their foot of the accelerator and not touched the brake if going 100km/h or higher the driver would have been fine.

    • @Gibson99
      @Gibson99 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alternatively, jam on the trailer brakes while hitting the accelerator to straighten it out. then gently use normal braking to get back down to a reasonable speed and get back behind the lorry.

    • @Gibson99
      @Gibson99 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      MyGun4hire not sure why I'm bothering to reply to such an incredibly well thought out reply, but here goes. Normally, if the trailer actually has brakes (some small trailers don't have brakes at all) then there's a separate trailer brake controller in the cab of the tow vehicle. Even big rigs have a separate brake controller. On the controller, there's a lever or button you can squeeze to apply the trailer brakes independently from the tow vehicle brakes - specifically for situations like this, or any other reason you might need to apply more braking force with the trailer than with the tow vehicle - can be especially useful in slippery conditions such as snow and ice.

    At least 3 things probably were the cause a) incorrect loading, too much weight at the rear b) traveling too fast, stick to 90kph or less c) not slowing as soon as things started to go to crap, don't just jump the brakes. Also the van really should have been fitted with stability control which automatically brakes the wheel when it scenes things are wrong. They probably didn't add that option when buying the van.

    • @tasmaniandevil2351
      @tasmaniandevil2351 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Craig Best - You're right but there's also driver-induced oscillation where the driver trying to correct makes it worst. Electric trailer brakes with manual override would have been the cheapest prevention. Sometimes the oscillation is only at a set speed. I've had a small oscillation at 60km/h with a car trailer which stopped at 70km/h. Thankfully I paid extra for electric brakes so had no trouble.

      Is there any way to determine if a caravan is loaded badly (short of weighing every bit of cargo) or do you just have to eyeball it?

    • @tasmaniandevil2351
      @tasmaniandevil2351 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MistrDamige - Measure the height of the front and back of the car before loading and again after. You can measure at any points as long as you measure the same points after loading. When correctly loaded the car height shouldn't change much, front or back. If there is any change in height it's safer for there to be a small rise at the front of the car and the back to sit down slightly. If the back rises then there's an increase in the probability that you'll experience what happened in this video. If the front rises too much then you'll lose the steering when accelerating out of a corner. Determining what is too much depends on each individual vehicle. If you want you can weigh the jockey wheel while it's supporting the caravan and it shouldn't be above 500kg (but the upper limit is sometimes much less for some vehicles). A towball weight of 200-300kg should be a generally safe figure for most vehicles.

      Craig Best yes, also the speed differential between the caravan and the truck played a part - trucks have massive bow waves with its best to ease through - at tat speed it would have been like having a sudden impact on the side of the caravan. You can actually see the sway starts as the axle of the caravan passes the front of the truck. Many caravan towers forget they are much more susceptible to the bow wave of a truck than a car or motorcycle trailer due to their large flat sides

      It's pretty much impossible to correct for this instability due to the rear overhang of the car. This means you can not _directly_ control which way the caravan moves, and the caravan also always wants to rock the car the wrong way, inducing oscillation.

  • @davidzachmeyer1957
    @davidzachmeyer1957 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Note that in all of these type of incidents, the trailer starts swaying when the axle gets about even with the front of the truck. It's not because they're going to fast, or overloaded, or poor weight distribution. It's because the back part of the trailer starts getting hit by the bow wave of air coming off the front of the semi. It pushes the back of the trailer sideways, which starts an oscillation, which grows worse as the driver attempts to correct it.

    • @Chrisjude100
      @Chrisjude100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly right! If you ride a motorcycle, you feel that wash as you overtake and you go from still air alongside the semi to side-wind and tend to be pushed outwards from the truck (left or right, depending on where you're driving).
      It's unnerving, but once you expect it you do'n't (over)correct. Just hold the line and the trailer will right itself as wind pressure evens up again. Correcting just introduces another force that will not be countered by the wind, and fishtailing is inevitable.
      It takes nous, but this driver should have stopped steering for at least a couple of seconds to allow the "system" to settle back to equilibrium.

    • @johnwoodrow8769
      @johnwoodrow8769 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, the root-cause of the problem is a poorly loaded van. Too much weight in the back. There is an excellent video on the internet from some UK university of a small 'model' running on a continuous moving belt (representing the road). They are able to change the weight distribution of the model to show how it responds to being knocked off course. Weight forward of the model axle no real problem, it self corrects. The more the weight behind the axle, the model sways progressively out of control.

    This is what happens when people have no idea how to pack things in a caravan. Place anything you have to put in there at the front of the caravan (nearest to the car) and the weight distribution will often prevent this. Put everything on the bed at the back (which a lot of people do) and the result is usually what we see here.

    Can any physicist tell me if the air swirling around a rig can cause enough turbulence to cause the car and trailer to lose control? It seems that in both videos, the vehicles only start to sway just after (or result of) passing a big rig. I'm wondering if that is a factor. Any opinions?
    Perhaps it is best to not pass a big rig if you're driving a car with a trailer.

    • @teenaramsay2469
      @teenaramsay2469 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Google "Bernoulli Effect". The venturi created between the truck side and the passing caravan creates the instability (sway) in the caravan. See John Cadogan's vids for the explanation. Only if the towing vehicle had enough power to pull the van straight, or the driver could find the electric brake switch (if the van was fitted with electric brakes) and activate then in the 3 seconds before he went out of control could the situation have been saved. Otherwise destination F*****d.

    You should have more weight up front on the van, maybe he got it wrong here, but I think what set it off was the bubble of higher pressure air being pushed through by the semi. As the van passed the front of the truck, it was pushed sideways by the air spilling from the blunt face of it. From then on the driver started to do everything wrong.

    And for God's sake. Adapt ypur speed to driving condition and your driving skills, and lear to load the damn thing corectly (put your HEAVY weight inthe Car trunk, and all other junk in front of the caravan). Remember to NOT go faster than yor Guradian Angel can Fly!
