      Ross Westmore Indeed according to the road rules, if they have to cross a dotted line, they have to give way.

    • @Baelfyr
      @Baelfyr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      actually, if its a thin long dotted line the people on the highway have to give way, but if the car reaches the fat short dotted lines, the car has to give way to the highway, you have a small chance to get on the highway and people should give way, hence getting into the overtaking lane if people are trying to merge onto the highway, but if the person merging takes too long, they have to stop and give way to the highway til its open, but in this case, its stand still bumper to bumper traffic, but if the truck has let someone in already, the car should of waited his turn, and gone behind the truck, regardless of any situation, the car is at fault here, have a little respect for the people driving the trucks, its really not hard to give 30 seconds of your time considering the small amount of time people use the roads compared to a truck driver who spends 8-12 hours a day on the road...

    • @Baelfyr
      @Baelfyr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walter Boxhead the lines i was talking about represent stop and giveway signs and also must be followed the same way, like at intersections and what not, they all mean the same. From the QLD government transport website:
      Stop and give way lines
      Stop and give way lines have the same meaning and authority as stop and give way signs.
      If you approach a stop line or give way line, where there is no corresponding sign installed, you must obey the road markings as if there was a sign in place.
      and this one too in queensland: www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/rules/road/lanes/index.html
      1. On roads where there are lanes marked on the road-if your lane comes to an end, you must give way to traffic already in the lane you are moving to. In this example, Vehicle A (white) must give way to Vehicle B (yellow).
      2. On roads where there are no lanes marked on the road-when lines of traffic merge, you must give way to any vehicle that is ahead of you. In this example, Vehicle B (yellow) must give way to Vehicle A (white).
      Lines of traffic refers to adjacent rows of vehicles that do not have a lane separation line between them.

    • @Baelfyr
      @Baelfyr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walter Boxhead but that was exactly what i said in the first place? before you commented that it was wrong, which it wasnt.... i only looked the information up to get a better way of what i was trying to say, i knew what it was before looking it up... but yeah, my reference to like a intersection still stands, im not calling it an intersection, im merely referencing the similar properties of the lines...

    • @BESHYSBEES
      @BESHYSBEES 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually it’s a written rule and in Australia is called zipper formation, the person merging is always at fault in these circumstances because we inherently give way to the right and it’s up them to zip into formation not the cars already travelling

    • @Mike-mh8gy
      @Mike-mh8gy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No that wasn’t a zip merge. A zip merge is where the dotted white line stops and you are not technically changing lanes and in which case the car in front has right of way. In this case there is no break in the dotted white line and thus the white car IS changing lanes and should only do so if safe to proceed and otherwise should have given way. White car completely in the wrong.

      From a physics standpoint, you’re correct. But two things to think about:
      1) most guys driving these work for a company. Often if they get in any wreck (especially one that could have been avoided, even if it wasn’t their ‘fault’), they lose a safe driving bonus, get in trouble, may even be fired.
      2) if the car driver sues the truck/bus driver, more jurors will be sympathetic to the car driver simply because there are a lot more car drivers than truck/bus drivers.
      So, the truck will win the battle, but the truck driver may well lose the war.

    Dear truckers, on behalf of car drivers, I apologize for muppets in Commodores who don't understand 1-for-1 zipper merging.
    Dear boxheads, regardless of painted lines or Victorian legislation, when performed correctly the zipper merge is the most mathematically efficient, easy-to-understand, and socially courteous means for merging. Any time you start thinking about your 'rights', you're probably in the wrong. Instead consider what would be best for the road system and its collective users as a whole.

      Ben, I thought the rule was the vehicle in a lane has right of way over a vehicle wishing to enter that lane when there is a dashed line. So it is only a matter of courtesy the Commodore would be let in. I also understand the rule when there is no dashed line the vehicle ahead has the right of way. That is where the zipper thing comes in, I think. Not when there's a dashed line. That's what I thought it was. But could be wrong. Whichever way we look at it, the Commodore was a total idiot for attempting to force the truck to back off. You and I would realise the truck is not letting us in and would give up, wouldn't we.

    I've never even heard of 1 for 1 merging. My understanding of Victorian rules are:
    Crossing no lines to merge = "zip merge"= whoever has their nose in front has right of way
    Crossing lines to merge= car in continuing lane has right of way (the truck in this case)
    Is the 1 for 1 thing considered a courtesy rather than a law?
    I have seen the 'take turns to merge' signs around also. Would this situation be considered different with the inclusion or absence of such a sign, all other things being equal?

    • @jaydensquid415
      @jaydensquid415 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The commodore has to give way to the truck, he/she is merging onto the road so the truck had ride of way. 1 for 1 or zip merging has been around forever, it's not technically a law but common courtesy. The commodore driver is in fault and is quite an asshole for thinking that they're a special snowflake.

Think of yourself as a fluid. One little boulder in the stream can disrupt flow and force other 'water' to go around. Work together.. Man I had the opposite problem just a couple of days ago, probably the first time I've actually encountered someone doing this. But I was about a car and a half ahead of the car in traffic, so he was half a car length behind the back of my car. I put my indicator on to merge and he speeds up, so as I go to merge his now at my back and by the time the merging lane ends his half way up my car. Now this would not be a huge issue if he was a normal car, or a massive construction barrier was not occupying what used to be the emergency lane. But I now have to break hard because an idiot with a trailer saw my indicator and decided to try and overtake me while I was in the merging lane! Surely most people know the rules of a merging/slip lane, don't get me wrong I've come across many that don't but I've never had one that was not even equal with me but well behind try to get ahead of me. Add to this my car has a transmission problem so I could not compete with him, I had no choice but to basically stop my already challenged car in a construction zone on a freeway!

    • @Mike-mh8gy
      @Mike-mh8gy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That wasn’t a zip lane. Dotted white line all the way and the white car should only cross the line when safe to do so, otherwise STOP. A zip merge is where the dotted white line stops and neither vehicle is technically changing lanes and in which case the car in front has right of way.
