Fixed: Admiral Washing Machine Banging During Spin Cycle

  • This video shows how I fixed an Admiral washing machine (model ATW4675YQ1) that was making a loud banging noise during the spin cycle. This was caused by the suspension rods being worn out. Replacing the rods fixed it.

My Amana is doing this. I just called my local appliance repair shop. They want $100 to come diagnose the problem, then another $50 to come back a second time to install the parts, plus the cost of parts. I am a 70 yo woman, very handy at fixing things. I will do this myself. Thanks for the video and parts link

Great video. If you are having trouble lifting the new hooks through the top you can put the old ones through the top of the holes, hook the new ones, and lift them through. Made it even easier for me

Alot easier than lifting the whole drum out. Replacing one at a time is better than removing all then replacing. Sometimes people make it harder than it needs to be. I am a female attempting to fix my washer. This was extremely helpful

      @thefiXfiles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@thefiXfiles I am slow to the go...ugh. I need to get the parts ordered still. Are all parts similar or I should look up the model number? Its more my confidence in doing the task, I know I am able. I have taking apart a dryer and put back together and that was empowering.

A couple of notes I will make on the repair I did today. The screws on the back of the washer were 1/4" socket size. To get the rods out, I think I tilted the washer about 30 degrees. Reason I mention that is that I was working in a very enclosed space to do the repair. I went in a clockwise order to replace the rods. The first rod at the upper right side was the trickiest to replace at first because a wire cord was next to it. I needed to run the rod outside the wire tube. It wanted to go inside the tube path, which could allow the wire tube to rub against the rod.
I found that getting the rods secured in the upper cups was easy to do if you use the hook end of another rod to pull the new one up through the cup and hold it in place while aligning the plug.
The repair took a few hours for me as I had to clean up around the washer a bit and did not want to rush swapping the rods. I ran the washer on two cycles and it seems like it went pretty well. One caveat, I ordered OEM rods from another vendor other than the one mentioned here. The reviews on Amazon were not stellar in some cases for the rods used. I paid more for the OEM rods but this saves me a lot $$$$ versus buying a new washer.

@@TheHankPotter I wish I had seen your notes before I installed new suspension rods. Thank you. At the age of 68, I am finding that my muscle strength is sadly wanting. Technique, leverage and removing/replacing one at a time is definitely the way to go. Most importantly I enlist the help of my angel. The proof that I have is when I ask for help things will fall into place and I don't see how it could have happened. We are all given an angel and I have been helped many many times. PS I am in no way a holy person, but I do have faith in Jesus' sacrifice for our fallen nature and to redeem us to a relationship with our Creator.

Same with us. Though one of our rods had completely broken before we attempted this fix. It now works but almost every load still makes the horrible shaking/banging and requires me to stop it and rebalance the clothes. Sometimes it takes me 3-4 tries at rebalancing until it will finally spin and finish the load. What did we do wrong? It takes way too much babysitting and time just to finish one load now.

mine sounds just like yours, and i only had 1pr. pants, 2 boxers, 3 tee shirts, 4 washcloths & 2 bath towels. & it sounded like Thor was giving it hell with his hammer or an apache helicopter was landing in that room. so i ran , almost out the front door, but decided to go and push the pause button. and wait 3 full min. for the lid to unlock. i really want to bypass/defeat that lock.i have no children living at home. im solo here & quite aware , as to not put hand into moving tub. GREAT VID !!! THANK YOU SO MUCH. NOW........whats up with agitator, it moves at a snails pace, it moves at least 1/2 the speed of all other machines ive seen before & i got this one in 2017 at an appliance outlet(scratch/dent, new & reconditioned) so i dont have the benchmark of a new machine to guage if mine is failing or its normal. thanks again !!!

Hey, loved your video and we changed the rods exactly as you did.
However, the rods were "short" when they arrived (based on the link you provided for Amazon).
I thought this would not be an issue, so we changed out the rods.
Now, the washer still rattles, and the drum is trimming pieces of plastic of the top of the washer.
So the drum sits higher and a wash cycle can't complete.
We will be exchanging the rods and hope to the get proper size ones. Based on your video and now, our "experience" we should be able to quickly do this again! Cheers!

Yep! It was exactly 2013. Got it when my wife and I got our first apartment together. We went to Home Depot and asked for the cheapest ones they had because that was all we could afford lol

We have the one from 2013. Just now having the same problem. We asked for the "cheapest ones too". Honestly for 9 years this thing worked amazing. Thats more than I see for a lot of the newer more expensive models.

@@kafarhan Fixing was relativey easy. I ordered OEM parts from parts dr . Did at least 30 washes since then and the machine is noise free.

Thanks, I was able to replace these with little issue. The only thing that happened afterward was the tub is much higher than it was before. Your tub is much lower after you replaced these rods. I washed a load of towels afterwards and it made that banging sound again. Any idea why? Thanks.

I just replaced mine all from the top side without having to remove the water lines or drain hose. As long as you can tilt it enough to raise one side 7 or so inches above the floor. I used wood blocks to rest it on and tied a string to the hook end in case I dropped it. Angle the spring end away from the hole in the drum and you can pull it through from the top. Much easier and faster in my opinion

Works good but be careful on link. I bought the wrong rods and they didn't work but exchanged them for the right ones and worked on perfect

I can’t get the top of my washer open like that!!! I took the 3 screws out. It will not slide forward or lift. I’m so frustrated!!!

Okay, will the jerking make the agitation go cockeyed as well, it was shaking like California, now the agitation is off... it would not reset either😅😒

I replaced the rods. They worked for a
few months and then the plastic over the spring started slipping again. I did the pin trick and that worked for a few months until they worked their way loose again. Could there be an issue with the drive hub that makes them keep failing?

I think it’s just cheapo China replacement parts. Some folks have mentioned the OEM manufacturer rods seem to last longer.

Might as well buy a new or lightly used one. It's a crap shoot weather it's the rods or not.

What would have made an even more awesome video is if you would have shown the old parts. But , still good vid. Ty for the top-load upload!
