I've had a front loader for over 25 years. I love it but one thing I always do to reduce the mold drastically is keep the door open. Keeps everything fresh.
Please tell me how to keep mold mildew out of the detergent tray? I pull out the tray and it is just nasty. Never had anything like this in top loader. I so wish I could get rid of my front loader...
@@Cooking_Through_Time Mould and bacteria need moisture to grow, so the most effective measure is to leave the door open and the draw ajar between washes to reduce the humidity and stop condensation forming in the machine. If you use fabric softener or liquid detergent in the draw then rinsing the draw under tap to get rid of the residue is not a bad idea too. Softener particularly since it clings by design and goes in the last rinse, provides mould and bacteria with both a medium to grow in and a source of nutrients. I prefer to use powder detergent that has oxygen bleach in it, powder doesn't contribute to the mould and smell problem and the oxygen bleach kills mould and bacteria, although the draw compartment won't get washed by it. There's a video by Warwick chemical about the hygenic benefits of TAED on youtube 1NmsV6XAbuY worth a watch. I found a steamer with a small brush attachment works quite well to remove mould from the draw compartment.

Vinegar is not proper cleaning. It’s been proven to be effective but not as effective as traditional which is why it’s not recommended by the experts like in cdc of America. You’re better off using a non-microfiber rag to remove the dirt and then using microfiber to make sure it’s all clean.
Do this if you want to keep your tub/gasket clean: switch to old-fashioned powder detergent! I got this advice from my knowledgeable appliance sales person. Liquid and pod detergents are sticky (ever get some on your hands?) so they adhere to clothes/dirt. So, it sticks to the gasket and washer tub, too. Powder doesn't. After a robust cleaning, like what Brandon shows here, try the powder. Difference is night-n-day. Clothes are just as clean. We switched to powder for dishwasher, too. Same result. Give powder a shot (while they still sell it!) and you won't regret it!
@@cooky75015you would put the powder (or liquid or pod) in the detergent container, usually on the inside of the door. The dishes must get wet first before the detergent can work (like wetting your hair before using shampoo).
When I found out I could take the whole tray out, I was delighted! But the build up within the rubber ring has me disgusted and no matter how many times I tried to clean it, the rubber seems to stay stained. Vinegar can only do so much but I gotta get the bleach out to tackle the mildew. We've made sure to do a clean cycle once a month ever since we got it, so it helps a little with the build up in the ring, but no where near enough to remove the mildew. Didn't know there was anything safe enough to remove mold and mildew in these washers, so thanks for mentioning about a product that could help.
Also I have the same washing machine, that hose where you drain the pump will not drain if you pull it all of the way out. Push it back in slowly until you see it start to flow. And you should be good to take the filter out after that without as much mess.
@@maureenbullis1805 On mine (a Zanussi = electrolux in US), the tube kinks where it attaches to the filter (coin trap) housing when you pull it out. Pushing it back a bit can help open it up a bit, but it is pretty useless. Some more modern machines have a spout arrangement to direct the water into a tray when you loosen the screw cap.
Unfortunately some of the new models no longer have a drain hose. I’ve found the plastic dustpan (from a dustpan and brush set) can be held at an angle under the filter as you unscrew it to catch the water. CAUTION only partially unscrew it, so you can screw it back up when your dustpan is full of water. Empty the dustpan and continue :) I have had success using gel bleach to remove mould from the rubber seal. I soak toilet tissue or a paper towel with the gel bleach and apply it like a poultice to the mould. It should stay in place for several hours as required. As mentioned in the video, the best remedy is to always let the seal dry out before closing the door.
I make an actual slide from tin foil from filter to the syphon on the floor. No spillage, works perfectly! Tin foil is great since you can shape it any way you need to...
A huge percentage of people do not clean the equipment used to clean things. It just gets nastier and nastier over time until it breaks from filth build up. Thanks for this one, I'm taking those tablets to every airbnb I go to from now on.

Back when I was renting a condo (4 years ago) I had a top-loader stacking washer. So, they do exist! But, that might not help you, as you said it was an apartment, so you probably don't own the washer and dryer. Just on the off chance you do own it and want a top loader, I thought I would let you know they do make them. Mine was tiny. I could fit (with the recommended only 2/3rds full per load) a queen sheet set (fitted sheet, flat sheet and two pillow cases) in there, not sure how a king sheet set would have done, just to give you an idea of how small they can come. 😅
Useful tip: when your washing is finished and you have taken the load out, place a rolled-up cloth on the bottom circle of the rubber seal/door gasket and leave it for a couple of hours or overnight. It'll absorb water hanging there and prevent rotting.
Great video. Just one thing ….I hope you didn’t miss the ‘ceiling’ of the space where the soap/powder tray sits. If you look up there, you’ll always find a tonne of black mould that’s always extra difficult to remove thoroughly. I usually use some spray bleach, a toothbrush, then I direct a water spray up there to rinse away as much of it as possible. I do this BEFORE I start the hot cleaning cycle - so that all of the loosened mould on the ‘ceiling’ gets rinsed away when the machine fills with water.
A good tip for front loaders is to remove the soap dish and let it dry out of the machine after every use. Additionally you should always keep the door open slightly after every use so it has a chance to dry out and it will not mold. I’ve had my LG front loader for two years and it still looks brand new.
I have a top load and I do the same to prevent it from getting nasty - remove detergent container and let it all dry out, keep top open, then hang a damp raid bag inside the washer.
I recently realized that washing machines need to be clean I was watching TH-cam videos and I saw this one lady doing aesthetic cleaning I have never seen my mother clean a washing machine and the last 50 years
The older and top loading machines were better in every way, and did not require anything close to that type/level of maintenance. Clothes were cleaner, too.

Buying a front load washing machine was one of the worst household decisions of my life. I had an LG with lots of whistles and bells for nearly 14 years and it was the most high maintenance appliance I’ve ever had. Even regular cleaning such as you are doing here did not prevent it from burping up sludge onto the clothes every few weeks or months. This sludge would collect around the drum beyond the reach of my cleaning tools and eventually would get slung out into the washing compartment. Also, clothes never seemed to get truly clean-had to use every increased water setting and run an additional rinse cycle to feel things were acceptably clean. It was a huge added time burden. Had a major epiphany when using a top loader at an RV park and load came out fresh in half the time. Finally got rid of that beast and replaced it with a top loader and am so much happier!! Should have done that a decade sooner.
I’m really happy that you shared the links for all the products you used. This is my first front load machine and I hate that if I leave the door closed it has a terrible smell afterwards I was worried about my clothes having the same smell. That magnet is exactly what I needed because my washer and dryer are in a closet and if I leave the door open sometimes it gets caught on the closet door, this will keep it from swinging open too far! Thanks for all the tips I now know how to keep it clean and keep the odor out!
When cleaning the filter at the bottom of the washing machine, I place a large baking sheet with a shallow rim on the floor (instead of a dish that has taller sides that is used in the video) to catch the water and debris from the little hose. This enables the hose to drain more effectively because you're letting gravity do its job, instead of being propped up on the rim of your glass dish, which prevents what is in the hose from draining. Also, I let it drain for at least 15-20 minutes, until it stops draining, checking occasionally to make sure the water coming out of the little hose doesn't overflow the baking sheet (it never does, but doesn't hurt to be cautious). Once all the water is drained, THEN you can unscrew the filter to clean it, without flooding the floor because you've already allowed the water to drain from the hose completely. When there's still water in the hose, the water escapes through the filter when you unscrew it, thus causing the minor flood shown in the video.
Don't forget to wipe out the filter housing, that the filter is screwed into and if clogged, the drain tube can be cleaned out with a pipe cleaner. Under the surrounding gasket can be cleaned also with a microfiber cloth, just fold back the gasket to expose the nylon insert and wipe while spinning the drum by hand slowly. Great video❤
People! Please, please, pretty please make sure you are reading the manuals that come with your appliances. It literally tells you how/when to clean your washing machine. To the people that had no idea that the detergent tray on a front loader is removable...I guarantee you 100%, it tells you how to in the manual. Buy something? READ THE MANUAL!
I wipe down my LG washer front loader after each use. I don't have any dirt or grime that looked like the one you were cleaning. I ordered some of the cleaners you recommended. My LG washer has a cleaning cycle, so I will see what happens. Appreciate your video.

I'm glad I watched this. I could never understand why manufacturers bother with that "drain hose". It's really pretty useless. My washer has a "clean" cycle on it and I try to do it at the first of every month. Sometimes your videos are self-confirming which is just as important. Thank you (for making a mess as well..LOL!)
My detergent drawers is removed every day. . I’ve never had mildew there. I clean the filter once a month and again, no problems. My front loader door is always open but I also have a cheap Amazon endoscope that lets me inspect to make sure everything stays mildew free. I am a quilter so a front loader is a must. Doesn’t matter if it’s a washer or a vacuum, you should always care for your tools.
I do the same, but leave them open between washes. I also use washing powder with oxi-action, the oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) in it kills bacteria and mould so the machine doesn't get smelly, as well as washing better than most liquids.
Wow. I inherited two houses. I have NEVER had to do this in my house with a top load machine in 23 years. In my rental house with a front load machine the gasket was covered with black mold when the tenants left after about 2 years. What I've learned? Never buy a front load machine. Too much hassle.

OMG the whole tray comes out? I've been "doing the best I can" with the parts that easily pull up, but now I'm going to push on the back of that blue tab in the back left and be a cleaning magician like you! Thanks for the tips as always. (and I also end up making a water mess when cleaning the filter at the bottom of the machine. You'd think they'd make that easier to clean - meaning make it so you can slie=de a plastic sandwich container under there to catch the water flowing out like a river!)
We no longer use the soap dish drawer as we now use a sheet-type detergent and a non-chlorine bleach pod for brighter colors when necessary. Works soooo well. Will check it periodically, yet after initial cleaning, stays pretty good. Actually pulling out the drawer is a new-to-me and a great idea. 💡 😊
The water with detergent in it would still go through the detergent trays because that is how they are designed. I use the detergent sheets also. I don't know how much residue would build up in the detergent trays and areas. I sure need to do this deep clean myself. I haven't done all these steps.
So helpful; thank you very much. After I learned to wipe down the washer gasket and leave the door open to dry, I have zero build up of crud. I also remove the dispenser tray and let it dry each time and also wipe a towel in the tray recess. I appreciate knowing about the Sugary gel. I want to try it on stains around the bathtub/wall seal.

I purchased this cleaner and used it according to the directions. It removed little mold, but did bleach the rubber seal. I would use a different cleaner in the future.
This was excellent! My fl washer really needs a good detailing. I took the filter door off a couple of weeks ago, but can’t get it back on. 😢 I’m under the weather now, so when I’m better, the washing machine is my next project.
I do all this cleaning to MY washer once a month. Afterwards I leave the washer door open for about 24 hours. I NEVER have any odors. Wash is always clean, no residue. Thanks
Thanks for confirming that I'll never buy a front-loader washer. I've had a top loader/non-agitator washer for about 10 years now and I really love it. It uses less water and my clothes come out clean. The model I have has a spout built in so that I can rinse something out in the drum if I need to. Every person I know who has a front loader, has the smelliest laundry room ever! When you neglect that rubber gasket and the sludge builds up, there is nothing to get the stink out.
Thank you. I've had my machine for about 5 years, and never knew about the little trap door at the bottom! I glanced through the manual early on, but never saw that part. Not saying it isn't there, only that I didn't see it. I have poured bleach in the gasket during the basket clean, and it is helpful. But I still have black gunk.
Best way to look after your rubbers is wipe them dry after every wash and leave the door open for a few hours, my wife does that and we have absolutely no mould problems 😊
Thanks, I always wipe my front loader out after every wash day. Only takes a minute and the buildup never comes! Also, if I have a real dirty load, or if I've washed the dog blankets, I do a rinse and spin cycle after emptying the washer and then wipe it out. 😊
My sister died a year ago, and my nephew gave me her front loading washer and dryer. I'm moving soon and they will bring it to my new place. I found out that there was a load of laundry in the dryer and in the washer that had sat for a year. He said it smells kinda bad. I'm hoping I can use your cleaning tips to get it back to normal!!
I use paper towels or chlorox wipes to get the majority of the gunk and then you can use a rag. There is always a lot of gunk buildup so you would be using multiple rags. It works for me.
Since replacing my old machine, I will now leave the door open when not in use and wipe away the residue water inside the door and seal so nothing unpleasant builds up. Then just run a clean cycle once a month to descale and freshen.
I run a scoop of oxy clean on the sanitize heavy load every day many months in between the washing machine cleaner. It seriously helps so much and minimizes the scrubbing around the gasket.
@@winromeo They'd react. If you want a more effective oxygen bleach, try to find one with both TAED and Sodium Percarbonate in it. Here in the UK some Vanish stain remover products and some washing machine detergent powders contain both. Oxiclean type products contain Sodium Percarbonate, its and adduct of Hydrogen Peroxide (the oxidising agent that does the cleaning) and Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) which separate when mixed with warm water. (it's sometimes called sodium carbonate peroxide in the ingredient list). TAED is a oxygen bleach booster, it converts the hydrogen peroxide into peracetic acid, which is a stronger oxidiser : peracetic acid is widely used in hospitals as a disinfectant because it kills more viruses and bacteria than chlorine bleach. I just got done cleaning my machine thoroughly. I just want to point out that when cleaning the laundry detergent shoot, make sure you clean the top, too. Mold and mildew will build up there also.
My tip would be for the people who use bleach to clean the washer, switch to 12% hydrogen peroxide a few cups. Peroxide works better on complex organisms like mold and mildew and is less harsh and corrosive on materials. I also use it as a spray with a tiny bit of soap for stick, occasionally spritzing the gasket and the sprayers at the top.
When I bought my new front load washer dryer set, I made sure anyone who used it understood to take a cloth (kept on top of washer to make it handy to get to) and dry the door and the seal after every use. It cuts down on quite a bit of extra cleaning that needs to be done. Then about every 3 months I do thorough cleaning of the seal. I still do the lint trap and soap dispenser once a month.
When I recently bought a new washing machine, everyone asked why I was so adamant that I didn’t want a front loader. I’m not saying my top loader is ZERO maintenance, but it beats a stinky mouldy front loader
Not to mention everyone I know who has one, always seems to have moldy-smelling towels/clothes...and they are so used to the moldy smell over time that they don't even realize it.
@@enmodelife Because they overdose their detergent dispenser when they are running towels. Well probably in general you do not need as much detergent as specified on the box, but especially for towels.
I have had my front loader for 11 years now. There has never been any mold or smelly odors. I use bleach and the clean cycle once a month (more often during the summer). I wipe the gasket seal, inside of the drum and the door. Then I pull out the soap dispenser, leave it to dry over the sink, and wipe out the place it goes back into. Then I put it back in, but I leave it open a bit. I also leave the door ajar when it's not being used.

Tips: From the start: (and what he says at the end of the video) 1. After done washing all loads, take an old towel and run it around the rubber gasket, wipe down the door, take the detergent tray out and empty of an excess water that might be in it. Leave the door ajar to keep air circulation in it. 2. Monthly drain and clean the filter at the bottom. 3. Monthly do the tub clean. I use the Affresh tablets. I have never needed to do any additional cleaning in the three years we have had it. It is used by 5 people in the building.

For sure you have a clogged drain hose at the bottom of your machine (next to the trap). I have a similar drain and trap, and never seen that much water come out of the trap since the water comes out of the drain hose. I have own my machine since 2011.

This was a great, very thorough video. Greatly appreciate it…I was just beginning to regret my front load purchase…going to try all these tips and hope the mildewy scent goes away. I’ve only had it for 2 months!
Haven't had a smelly washing machine since the early 1990s which was caused by the liquid washing machine detergent we were using at the time, switched back to powder and the problem went away. I later found out that most good washing powders sold here in the UK contain Sodium Percarbonate (oxygen bleach) which kills bacteria growing in the washing machine as well as boosting cleaning. Also both liquid based detergents and fabric softener leave residue which retains moisture and provides a medium for bacteria and mould to grow in. I still use lots of fabric softener, but the oxygen bleach in the washing powder seems to keep the machine clean, it also helps to do a 60°C+ wash once in a while to wash away the fabric softener residue and kill off any bacteria that survives in the machine. The same stuff is used in the better washing machine cleaning products and in some colour safe stain removers. Some powders also contain TAED which boost the oxygen bleach action and makes it work at lower temperatures. Leaving the door open and the draw ajar between washes helps a lot to prevent mould growing on the door seal. I've never seen a washer this dirty. I'm amazed how clean you got it. But I was told to never use vinegar in the wash because it will harm the plastics . Is this incorrect?
The vinegar gets diluted when it goes through the machine. I’m not sure if it might be bad for the detergent trays but it shouldn’t affect the seals and other parts. But I’m not an expert so I guess if you’re worried just use the tablets. And read the user manual I guess 🤷♀️
Plumbers recommend that you do NOT add undiluted vinegar to your detergent dispenser. If you must add it, put it directly into the drum where it will get diluted.
It’s simple. Leave door open, and pull soap drawer slightly out after use. They need to dry out when not being used. My 11 year old machine has never been cleaned and looks brand new.

Two things people overlook in cleaning, washing machines and vacuum cleaners. Both deal with dirt so should be cleaned immediately after use or you will be using dirty implements to do your cleaning with. It is time consuming, but when you are cleaning your house (doing housework) include cleaning the tools you use.

Oh my goodness, that machine was filthy! What in the world are these folks washing?? I have 9 dogs whose beds and blankets need washing frequently and the machine doesn't look anywhere near that bad. The first time I took that filter out...😳 yikes. It was so matted with dog fur, I'm surprised the machine was still operating. Tip: use a shallow foil oven pan to place under the machine when draining and removing the filter to catch the flood! Didn't realize the soap/bleach chamber was removable; thanks. We just LOVE watching your videos 💜
I found after each wash to dry out everything it makes keeping the washer cleaner along with doing self clean on the washer mine feels new as I have had it two years now

Used a top load Whirlpool washer for 26 years. No maintenance, no issues, just clean clothes. Moved, got a front loader set with the dryer placed on top for space. Now that I can't get down on my knees anymore I have to get to the floor, look out the bottom of my glasses where the bifocals are and work that hose and filter out. There's not a thin enough tray to hold all the water that comes out plus the foot of the washer blocks any container I've tried. So I stuff towels around it. It's an ordeal. I have to use a chair to sit to get laundry in and out and then can barely hold those seals open to clean. I was able to pay a handyman to deep clean it once but I can't afford that every month. Plus I can't pre-soak anything anymore. I hate these machines.
If you’re using liquid detergent cleaning the seal is barely touching the surface. The whole inside outer side of the inner tub and tub surround is covered in this nasty stuff. I just disassembled my whole machine and had to do it a few years ago as well. I’ll by trying the powder detergent this round and seeing if it builds back up. We drain, leave door open, and wipe seal all the time.
Thanks you for the video. Nice job 🙂 I've been doing it with every front loader washer. I'm on my 3-rd now. The gears wear out regardless of the care given. The only thing I absolute hate is draining the hose. It sits so low to the ground, it takes for ever to drain and it is messy. The water will leak under the washer and the leg pegs will rust. Shitty job no matter how you slice it 🙂 On the other hand, the pedestal (very pricey for doing nothing) is too high. On a positive note...the drum (if stainless steel) makes great fire pit when fixing the washer is not worth fixing.
After the weeks laundry 😊is done, I pull out the drawer, take all the "lids," and off ,rinse it out in the sink and set it up on top of the machine to dry out and replace later on or the next day. Helps with reducing all the gross stuff.
Been using my Kenmore for going on 17 years. My husband has replaced the pump twice. Always have left door ajar. I always tell people who complain about the smell of mildew. It’s not really a big deal to leave it open.
If your towels and linens are smelly, put vinegar in the detergent drawer for the rinse cycle. Towels and such become softer as the vinegar helps with the removal of detergents. I use a minimum amount of detergent. I also dry the seal after the laundry is done for the day, and leave the door open. 18 years later and regular cleaning, still satisfied.
I just pour vinegar directly on the towels and they absorb it before I start the wash. That way I can get more vinegar and more smell removing out of that load.

Softener particularly since it clings by design and goes in the last rinse, provides mould and bacteria with both a medium to grow in and a source of nutrients.
I prefer to use powder detergent that has oxygen bleach in it, powder doesn't contribute to the mould and smell problem and the oxygen bleach kills mould and bacteria, although the draw compartment won't get washed by it. There's a video by Warwick chemical about the hygenic benefits of TAED on youtube 1NmsV6XAbuY worth a watch.
I found a steamer with a small brush attachment works quite well to remove mould from the draw compartment.

Vinegar is not proper cleaning. It’s been proven to be effective but not as effective as traditional which is why it’s not recommended by the experts like in cdc of America. You’re better off using a non-microfiber rag to remove the dirt and then using microfiber to make sure it’s all clean.

Do this if you want to keep your tub/gasket clean: switch to old-fashioned powder detergent! I got this advice from my knowledgeable appliance sales person. Liquid and pod detergents are sticky (ever get some on your hands?) so they adhere to clothes/dirt. So, it sticks to the gasket and washer tub, too. Powder doesn't. After a robust cleaning, like what Brandon shows here, try the powder. Difference is night-n-day. Clothes are just as clean. We switched to powder for dishwasher, too. Same result. Give powder a shot (while they still sell it!) and you won't regret it!
You can also check out laundry sheets (like Earth Breeze) which dissolve into soap when wet.
Great tip! I have also found that many times build up comes from using to much liquid detergent and it gunks up your machine.

@@cooky75015you would put the powder (or liquid or pod) in the detergent container, usually on the inside of the door. The dishes must get wet first before the detergent can work (like wetting your hair before using shampoo).

When I found out I could take the whole tray out, I was delighted!
But the build up within the rubber ring has me disgusted and no matter how many times I tried to clean it, the rubber seems to stay stained. Vinegar can only do so much but I gotta get the bleach out to tackle the mildew.
We've made sure to do a clean cycle once a month ever since we got it, so it helps a little with the build up in the ring, but no where near enough to remove the mildew.
Didn't know there was anything safe enough to remove mold and mildew in these washers, so thanks for mentioning about a product that could help.

Also I have the same washing machine, that hose where you drain the pump will not drain if you pull it all of the way out. Push it back in slowly until you see it start to flow. And you should be good to take the filter out after that without as much mess.

@@maureenbullis1805 On mine (a Zanussi = electrolux in US), the tube kinks where it attaches to the filter (coin trap) housing when you pull it out. Pushing it back a bit can help open it up a bit, but it is pretty useless. Some more modern machines have a spout arrangement to direct the water into a tray when you loosen the screw cap.
Unfortunately some of the new models no longer have a drain hose. I’ve found the plastic dustpan (from a dustpan and brush set) can be held at an angle under the filter as you unscrew it to catch the water. CAUTION only partially unscrew it, so you can screw it back up when your dustpan is full of water. Empty the dustpan and continue :)
I have had success using gel bleach to remove mould from the rubber seal. I soak toilet tissue or a paper towel with the gel bleach and apply it like a poultice to the mould. It should stay in place for several hours as required. As mentioned in the video, the best remedy is to always let the seal dry out before closing the door.

Back when I was renting a condo (4 years ago) I had a top-loader stacking washer. So, they do exist!
But, that might not help you, as you said it was an apartment, so you probably don't own the washer and dryer.
Just on the off chance you do own it and want a top loader, I thought I would let you know they do make them. Mine was tiny. I could fit (with the recommended only 2/3rds full per load) a queen sheet set (fitted sheet, flat sheet and two pillow cases) in there, not sure how a king sheet set would have done, just to give you an idea of how small they can come. 😅
They make front loaders with dryers on top, they look like a little tower
Useful tip: when your washing is finished and you have taken the load out, place a rolled-up cloth on the bottom circle of the rubber seal/door gasket and leave it for a couple of hours or overnight. It'll absorb water hanging there and prevent rotting.
Great video. Just one thing ….I hope you didn’t miss the ‘ceiling’ of the space where the soap/powder tray sits. If you look up there, you’ll always find a tonne of black mould that’s always extra difficult to remove thoroughly. I usually use some spray bleach, a toothbrush, then I direct a water spray up there to rinse away as much of it as possible. I do this BEFORE I start the hot cleaning cycle - so that all of the loosened mould on the ‘ceiling’ gets rinsed away when the machine fills with water.

A good tip for front loaders is to remove the soap dish and let it dry out of the machine after every use. Additionally you should always keep the door open slightly after every use so it has a chance to dry out and it will not mold. I’ve had my LG front loader for two years and it still looks brand new.
I have an LG also. I love it. I do the same as you. But I also use a cloth and dry the seal and door after every use.

I have a top load and I do the same to prevent it from getting nasty - remove detergent container and let it all dry out, keep top open, then hang a damp raid bag inside the washer.

Buying a front load washing machine was one of the worst household decisions of my life. I had an LG with lots of whistles and bells for nearly 14 years and it was the most high maintenance appliance I’ve ever had. Even regular cleaning such as you are doing here did not prevent it from burping up sludge onto the clothes every few weeks or months. This sludge would collect around the drum beyond the reach of my cleaning tools and eventually would get slung out into the washing compartment. Also, clothes never seemed to get truly clean-had to use every increased water setting and run an additional rinse cycle to feel things were acceptably clean. It was a huge added time burden. Had a major epiphany when using a top loader at an RV park and load came out fresh in half the time. Finally got rid of that beast and replaced it with a top loader and am so much happier!! Should have done that a decade sooner.

I’m really happy that you shared the links for all the products you used. This is my first front load machine and I hate that if I leave the door closed it has a terrible smell afterwards I was worried about my clothes having the same smell. That magnet is exactly what I needed because my washer and dryer are in a closet and if I leave the door open sometimes it gets caught on the closet door, this will keep it from swinging open too far! Thanks for all the tips I now know how to keep it clean and keep the odor out!
When cleaning the filter at the bottom of the washing machine, I place a large baking sheet with a shallow rim on the floor (instead of a dish that has taller sides that is used in the video) to catch the water and debris from the little hose. This enables the hose to drain more effectively because you're letting gravity do its job, instead of being propped up on the rim of your glass dish, which prevents what is in the hose from draining. Also, I let it drain for at least 15-20 minutes, until it stops draining, checking occasionally to make sure the water coming out of the little hose doesn't overflow the baking sheet (it never does, but doesn't hurt to be cautious). Once all the water is drained, THEN you can unscrew the filter to clean it, without flooding the floor because you've already allowed the water to drain from the hose completely. When there's still water in the hose, the water escapes through the filter when you unscrew it, thus causing the minor flood shown in the video.
Don't forget to wipe out the filter housing, that the filter is screwed into and if clogged, the drain tube can be cleaned out with a pipe cleaner. Under the surrounding gasket can be cleaned also with a microfiber cloth, just fold back the gasket to expose the nylon insert and wipe while spinning the drum by hand slowly. Great video❤

I'm glad I watched this. I could never understand why manufacturers bother with that "drain hose". It's really pretty useless. My washer has a "clean" cycle on it and I try to do it at the first of every month. Sometimes your videos are self-confirming which is just as important. Thank you (for making a mess as well..LOL!)
My detergent drawers is removed every day. . I’ve never had mildew there. I clean the filter once a month and again, no problems. My front loader door is always open but I also have a cheap Amazon endoscope that lets me inspect to make sure everything stays mildew free. I am a quilter so a front loader is a must. Doesn’t matter if it’s a washer or a vacuum, you should always care for your tools.
I do not only open the door after using the machines, but the soap tray as well. Close it the next day too prevent it from getting dusty.
I do the same, but leave them open between washes. I also use washing powder with oxi-action, the oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) in it kills bacteria and mould so the machine doesn't get smelly, as well as washing better than most liquids.

Wow. I inherited two houses. I have NEVER had to do this in my house with a top load machine in 23 years. In my rental house with a front load machine the gasket was covered with black mold when the tenants left after about 2 years. What I've learned? Never buy a front load machine. Too much hassle.
We only have front loaders in the UK. I have a Bosch machine, German technology at its best! I wouldn't buy anything else.

OMG the whole tray comes out? I've been "doing the best I can" with the parts that easily pull up, but now I'm going to push on the back of that blue tab in the back left and be a cleaning magician like you! Thanks for the tips as always. (and I also end up making a water mess when cleaning the filter at the bottom of the machine. You'd think they'd make that easier to clean - meaning make it so you can slie=de a plastic sandwich container under there to catch the water flowing out like a river!)
Try a shallow foil oven pan, it works great for mine!
You can use cotton buds to get into the tight places on the tray too.

We no longer use the soap dish drawer as we now use a sheet-type detergent and a non-chlorine bleach pod for brighter colors when necessary. Works soooo well. Will check it periodically, yet after initial cleaning, stays pretty good. Actually pulling out the drawer is a new-to-me and a great idea. 💡 😊
The water with detergent in it would still go through the detergent trays because that is how they are designed. I use the detergent sheets also. I don't know how much residue would build up in the detergent trays and areas. I sure need to do this deep clean myself. I haven't done all these steps.

I purchased this cleaner and used it according to the directions. It removed little mold, but did bleach the rubber seal. I would use a different cleaner in the future.

Thanks for confirming that I'll never buy a front-loader washer. I've had a top loader/non-agitator washer for about 10 years now and I really love it. It uses less water and my clothes come out clean. The model I have has a spout built in so that I can rinse something out in the drum if I need to. Every person I know who has a front loader, has the smelliest laundry room ever! When you neglect that rubber gasket and the sludge builds up, there is nothing to get the stink out.

Thank you. I've had my machine for about 5 years, and never knew about the little trap door at the bottom! I glanced through the manual early on, but never saw that part. Not saying it isn't there, only that I didn't see it. I have poured bleach in the gasket during the basket clean, and it is helpful. But I still have black gunk.
Best way to look after your rubbers is wipe them dry after every wash and leave the door open for a few hours, my wife does that and we have absolutely no mould problems 😊
Thanks, I always wipe my front loader out after every wash day. Only takes a minute and the buildup never comes! Also, if I have a real dirty load, or if I've washed the dog blankets, I do a rinse and spin cycle after emptying the washer and then wipe it out. 😊

I use paper towels or chlorox wipes to get the majority of the gunk and then you can use a rag. There is always a lot of gunk buildup so you would be using multiple rags. It works for me.
Since replacing my old machine, I will now leave the door open when not in use and wipe away the residue water inside the door and seal so nothing unpleasant builds up. Then just run a clean cycle once a month to descale and freshen.
I run a scoop of oxy clean on the sanitize heavy load every day many months in between the washing machine cleaner. It seriously helps so much and minimizes the scrubbing around the gasket.
Wonder if we can do both vinegar and OxyClean in the trays at the same time for maintenance.
@@winromeo They'd react. If you want a more effective oxygen bleach, try to find one with both TAED and Sodium Percarbonate in it. Here in the UK some Vanish stain remover products and some washing machine detergent powders contain both.
Oxiclean type products contain Sodium Percarbonate, its and adduct of Hydrogen Peroxide (the oxidising agent that does the cleaning) and Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) which separate when mixed with warm water. (it's sometimes called sodium carbonate peroxide in the ingredient list). TAED is a oxygen bleach booster, it converts the hydrogen peroxide into peracetic acid, which is a stronger oxidiser : peracetic acid is widely used in hospitals as a disinfectant because it kills more viruses and bacteria than chlorine bleach. I just got done cleaning my machine thoroughly. I just want to point out that when cleaning the laundry detergent shoot, make sure you clean the top, too. Mold and mildew will build up there also.
My tip would be for the people who use bleach to clean the washer, switch to 12% hydrogen peroxide a few cups. Peroxide works better on complex organisms like mold and mildew and is less harsh and corrosive on materials.
I also use it as a spray with a tiny bit of soap for stick, occasionally spritzing the gasket and the sprayers at the top.
When I bought my new front load washer dryer set, I made sure anyone who used it understood to take a cloth (kept on top of washer to make it handy to get to) and dry the door and the seal after every use. It cuts down on quite a bit of extra cleaning that needs to be done. Then about every 3 months I do thorough cleaning of the seal. I still do the lint trap and soap dispenser once a month.
When I recently bought a new washing machine, everyone asked why I was so adamant that I didn’t want a front loader. I’m not saying my top loader is ZERO maintenance, but it beats a stinky mouldy front loader
Not to mention everyone I know who has one, always seems to have moldy-smelling towels/clothes...and they are so used to the moldy smell over time that they don't even realize it.
It's really not that hard to hit th3 clean mode once a month.

Well probably in general you do not need as much detergent as specified on the box, but especially for towels.
I have had my front loader for 11 years now. There has never been any mold or smelly odors. I use bleach and the clean cycle once a month (more often during the summer). I wipe the gasket seal, inside of the drum and the door. Then I pull out the soap dispenser, leave it to dry over the sink, and wipe out the place it goes back into. Then I put it back in, but I leave it open a bit. I also leave the door ajar when it's not being used.

Tips:
From the start: (and what he says at the end of the video)
1. After done washing all loads, take an old towel and run it around the rubber gasket, wipe down the door, take the detergent tray out and empty of an excess water that might be in it. Leave the door ajar to keep air circulation in it.
2. Monthly drain and clean the filter at the bottom.
3. Monthly do the tub clean. I use the Affresh tablets.
I have never needed to do any additional cleaning in the three years we have had it. It is used by 5 people in the building.

For sure you have a clogged drain hose at the bottom of your machine (next to the trap). I have a similar drain and trap, and never seen that much water come out of the trap since the water comes out of the drain hose. I have own my machine since 2011.

This was a great, very thorough video. Greatly appreciate it…I was just beginning to regret my front load purchase…going to try all these tips and hope the mildewy scent goes away. I’ve only had it for 2 months!
Haven't had a smelly washing machine since the early 1990s which was caused by the liquid washing machine detergent we were using at the time, switched back to powder and the problem went away. I later found out that most good washing powders sold here in the UK contain Sodium Percarbonate (oxygen bleach) which kills bacteria growing in the washing machine as well as boosting cleaning. Also both liquid based detergents and fabric softener leave residue which retains moisture and provides a medium for bacteria and mould to grow in. I still use lots of fabric softener, but the oxygen bleach in the washing powder seems to keep the machine clean, it also helps to do a 60°C+ wash once in a while to wash away the fabric softener residue and kill off any bacteria that survives in the machine.
The same stuff is used in the better washing machine cleaning products and in some colour safe stain removers. Some powders also contain TAED which boost the oxygen bleach action and makes it work at lower temperatures.
Leaving the door open and the draw ajar between washes helps a lot to prevent mould growing on the door seal.

I've never seen a washer this dirty. I'm amazed how clean you got it. But I was told to never use vinegar in the wash because it will harm the plastics . Is this incorrect?
The vinegar gets diluted when it goes through the machine. I’m not sure if it might be bad for the detergent trays but it shouldn’t affect the seals and other parts. But I’m not an expert so I guess if you’re worried just use the tablets. And read the user manual I guess 🤷♀️
Plumbers recommend that you do NOT add undiluted vinegar to your detergent dispenser.
If you must add it, put it directly into the drum where it will get diluted.

It’s simple. Leave door open, and pull soap drawer slightly out after use. They need to dry out when not being used. My 11 year old machine has never been cleaned and looks brand new.

Both deal with dirt so should be cleaned immediately after use or you will be using dirty implements to do your cleaning with.
It is time consuming, but when you are cleaning your house (doing housework) include cleaning the tools you use.

Oh my goodness, that machine was filthy! What in the world are these folks washing?? I have 9 dogs whose beds and blankets need washing frequently and the machine doesn't look anywhere near that bad. The first time I took that filter out...😳 yikes. It was so matted with dog fur, I'm surprised the machine was still operating. Tip: use a shallow foil oven pan to place under the machine when draining and removing the filter to catch the flood! Didn't realize the soap/bleach chamber was removable; thanks. We just LOVE watching your videos 💜

I found after each wash to dry out everything it makes keeping the washer cleaner along with doing self clean on the washer mine feels new as I have had it two years now

A bit easier in my experience because you don't have to clean the rubber gasket. Other than that I follow the same process. So glad you enjoyed the video!

Used a top load Whirlpool washer for 26 years. No maintenance, no issues, just clean clothes. Moved, got a front loader set with the dryer placed on top for space. Now that I can't get down on my knees anymore I have to get to the floor, look out the bottom of my glasses where the bifocals are and work that hose and filter out. There's not a thin enough tray to hold all the water that comes out plus the foot of the washer blocks any container I've tried. So I stuff towels around it. It's an ordeal. I have to use a chair to sit to get laundry in and out and then can barely hold those seals open to clean. I was able to pay a handyman to deep clean it once but I can't afford that every month. Plus I can't pre-soak anything anymore. I hate these machines.
If you’re using liquid detergent cleaning the seal is barely touching the surface. The whole inside outer side of the inner tub and tub surround is covered in this nasty stuff. I just disassembled my whole machine and had to do it a few years ago as well. I’ll by trying the powder detergent this round and seeing if it builds back up. We drain, leave door open, and wipe seal all the time.

I've been doing it with every front loader washer. I'm on my 3-rd now. The gears wear out regardless of the care given. The only thing I absolute hate is draining the hose. It sits so low to the ground, it takes for ever to drain and it is messy. The water will leak under the washer and the leg pegs will rust. Shitty job no matter how you slice it 🙂
On the other hand, the pedestal (very pricey for doing nothing) is too high.
On a positive note...the drum (if stainless steel) makes great fire pit when fixing the washer is not worth fixing.

After the weeks laundry 😊is done, I pull out the drawer, take all the "lids," and off ,rinse it out in the sink and set it up on top of the machine to dry out and replace later on or the next day. Helps with reducing all the gross stuff.
Been using my Kenmore for going on 17 years. My husband has replaced the pump twice. Always have left door ajar. I always tell people who complain about the smell of mildew. It’s not really a big deal to leave it open.
They do have to clean it thoroughly once it has that smell.

If your towels and linens are smelly, put vinegar in the detergent drawer for the rinse cycle. Towels and such become softer as the vinegar helps with the removal of detergents. I use a minimum amount of detergent. I also dry the seal after the laundry is done for the day, and leave the door open. 18 years later and regular cleaning, still satisfied.
I just pour vinegar directly on the towels and they absorb it before I start the wash. That way I can get more vinegar and more smell removing out of that load.
