The 2024 Lexus GX 550 Is Now The "Value" Luxury Off-Roader?

  • Thanks to the recent addition of the Lexus TX, the brand's new answer to Acura's MDX, the popular Lexus GX gets tasked with a more focused and off-road mission than ever. That's the main reason we don't find any extra 3rd row or cargo room in this generation. Instead Lexus gives us a new 4WD system with more capability, a new engine with more power and torque, a new transmission with nearly double the gears and 2,500 lbs more towing capability. Yep, this GX will tow over 9,000 pounds when properly equipped.
Sadly however, the off road re-birth of the GX also means the loss of some classic Lexus virtues. The cabin is more austere than ever and it's the first Lexus I can think of that sports fake wood rather than real-tree on the interior.

I'm in the same boat, 100%. I have a vehicle now and love it, but the Land Cruiser and GX are very compelling for when the time comes. I echo your curiosity about the real-world reliability. On the one hand, Toyota arguably makes the most reliable hybrid systems in the world, and on the other hand, Lexus definitely knows how to build a reliable product. I guess we'll see!

Feel the old GX is more luxury both the interior and the subtlety of exterior. This gen is like Toyota ,especially the interior. Quality / finish and the premium feeling dose not equal to design. Plus, the design of this gen is also quick and dirty, not as thoughtful, which is unfortunately trend of many new cars now. I think among all of those cars that targeting the luxury segment, CX-90 (of course it has not real predecessor), Genesis and Cayenne see an increase of the quality. Lexus, Bens, and even BMW are all getting cheaper and cheaper. Audi is fine. Land Rover maybe have a wee bit improvement as well. As a taller (6' 2") driver, the big problem that I have noticed in newer vehicles is the lack of safe visibility out of the front windshield. They try to put the safety monitoring equipment in a black box at the top middle of the windshield.. see at (20:32) and (27:30).. Unfortunately, now the location of that black box (plus the rearview mirror itself) really hurts the drivers own ability to view out for safe driving. When it comes to safe driving, I trust my own eyes and vision much more than techie safety monitoring devices at the top middle part of the windshield. They need to find another place on the vehicle to put safety monitoring devices so you can look out of the front windshield safely.

Good visibility is EXTREMELY important for safe driving.. And like you said about "those big windows in front of your eye".. The problem is, when driving you just don't look straight ahead in front of you - you are look at all different directions - you look at many directions to driving safely. Side to side view - up and lower views.. My guess is that you are on the short side when it comes to your height... May not effect you as much.

There is a base model Tundra (SR) with less power than the other non-hybrid trims. That's where this engine is from. With the previous generation GX, the engine was shared with the lower trims of the Tundra (4.6 V8 with 301hp).

Actually a new 2023 GX460 leftover would be a fantastic steal now compared to the GX550. GX460 has better second row leg room since the seats can be adjusted/slide back and forth. This also can provide better leg room in the 3rd row if the 2nd row is adjusted forward a bit. I also really like the barn door in the back better with it's hidden wiper tucked away out of sight on top. The 460 gets that amazing KDSS as standard. @@OldelCpt I have a 2019 Honda Passport Elite with two rows of seats, and it has a little more room and I'm very comfortable in the first and second row. I went to the Chicago Auto Show last week and sat in the GX550 Overtrail with two rows of seats. It has less head room in front, but it was okay, the second row was much less head room than my Passport. My knees were on the back of the front seat and my head was touching the roof unless I reclined the seat back more to a less normal sitting position to get passed the bump on the roof. The roof is too low overall for taller people. The thing I least like was that the row two seat did not fold down flat. My Passport folds flat and has better cargo space. I want to buy the GX550 but those are my issues with it. I really like everything else, especially the towing capacity and overlanding ability.

When you were saying the steering wasn't solid you should have tried the different modes. It has an adaptive variable suspension. Good review but you didn't give it a fair review. You can't put this thing in the same category as a grand Cherokee or bronco. Lexus is the bench mark for top quality and reliability. The only competition is is the Defender but those things aren't reliable it's sugar coated shit. The only top quality SUV that beats the GX 550 Overtrail is the Mercedes G Wagon but that costs over a hundred Gran more. You and many others over look the A Trac capabilities for off roading. I own a done out 3rd gen Tacoma and that A Trac works wonders. The GX 550 is a beast. My Tacoma has King suspension and many other goodies but I will be getting this GX and keep the Tacoma for my shit kicking off road and hunting etc. While I build and complete and break in my GX before pushing it hard like my Tacoma

    @thebig12conference73 หลายเดือนก่อน

Engineering background and drive Lexus all the Duke, friend has a Lexus dealership. Here is what I don’t like and here’s what I like about the new GX five
unfortunately Lexus is getting greedy like the European auto makers: BMW, Mercedes, Maserati; Range Robert. As always the base model is reasonably priced but you will get cheap plastic finishes. The Luxury + is 84,000 and the OVER-TRAIL plus is , 77000 and that is without the ML Audio , which is another 2000.
2 Also the old GX 460’s were the best because they came with a V8 engine. It was smaller than the GX540 but now they switched to the too turbo V6. It is only a little more fuel efficient 1 MPG combined or 17 combined mpg You used to be able to tow 11,000 pounds, you lose 2,000 lbs. if that is not worth, shattering then go for it. Even the OvEE-TRAIL + comes with leather but it is faux leather, Thst is a bummer. That is what I don’t like but here is what I like .
You can get the Adaptive Variable system on the Over trail +, along Erin 33” tires and it has an 8.9” clearing.
Under the hood you still get 349 HP and a robust 19 speed automatic transition and
2 one of the few body on frame box SUV’s which are making a comeback
3 if you get it used in a few years, base model and base OVER-TRAIl would suffice
However after thinking about it I could just get a new F250 Godzilla lariat with a 7.3 L V8 engine and get plenty of luxury for 65,000 new or about 50,000 out the door couple of years used
    What I do t like.
You guys want a mimic the truck ffeel and go offloading that’s why you’re looking at this model . Why not get a luxury Ford and a luxury model lien a Larriat. It you want to go all out for $80,000, the price of an Ocer Trail +, you can get a platinuum with 3 Woodgreen on the dash leather seats massage adaptive variables system premium audio system, and all of the shots. Oh and you can get an off road version, do a skid plate with a 2’ lift and have fun.
I live in the desert in Las Vegas and let me tell you something I have a lifted F150 but it’s time for an upgrade whenever I go off Roading though I always noticed that the trucks come back fine but the SUVs are going to the shop and if you want to get a cruiser SUV then you might wanna look at the Lexus RX 350 and you’re gonna get better gas mileage With the F250 lariat combined with that 7.3 L engine and if you drive properly 60 to 65 mph then you could get 20 to 22 on the highway in 12 to 14 on the city for that 17 miles combined but you’re putting regular gas if you don’t need to tow and haul every day get the regular gas but if you need to tow and haul every day then get the 6.7 Lpower stroke diesel

    • @OldelCpt

Think of the mods to get a 4Runner Offroad premium with moonroof package and multiview cameras etc or a Pro to have the same long wheel travel as the e-KDSS and to fit bigger 33”-34” tires, then it’s only a few thousands more for more beefy components (see The Car Care Nut analysis) that the GX has with more comfort.
