    The invisibility of the islands is just a game mechanic. It's necessary to make you feel in the middle of the ocean, and to make the discovery of the islands something so surprising and interesting. That's why I keep my suspension of disbelief. Ignoring that nonsense helps me to enjoy the game so much more.

    • @kohakuarai
      @kohakuarai 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Perhaps because both islands have alien sites, maybe the aliens used some technology to camouflage it so it wouldn't be discovered so easily? Just a theory haha

      Perhaps it's because of the humidity which causes the fog, the Aurora is very dry because of, well, the fires, while the islands are full of vegetation so it would make some sense for the islands to be covered in fog while the Aurora is perfectly visible.

    The rabbit rays are supposed to be so fantastically poisonous that nothing eats them anymore; predators see one and just avoid. So I like to name my seamoth "Rabbit" and paint it the same blue and orange. It doesn't actually help, but I like to think it does.

  • @Maholix

    I named my sea moth the "Sea Katt" since it's a small agile vessel amongst the fishes, helping me with tasks.
    It was my way to make a pun about a excavator while going "I am the cat. Your a fish. I am superior."
    Once I got a prawn suit I named it "Levi" short for Leviathan, as a statement. It was my way of saying I wasn't afraid and had the power to be counted amongst the ranks of the biggest predators. :D
    Didn't stop me from freaking out at some of the discoveries though. Lol

    The islands are not visible because they represent spoilers. If you look at where the island is at, you can actually barely see its blurry edges and you realize that they are purposefully hidden. There isn't any in game explanation other than fog maybe but in reality they probably wanted to preserve that feeling you get when you first go outside of your pod and look at the endless sea everywhere.

    Story/lore is a huge part of the game, so I understand not wanting it spoiled. But also I understand people not wanting you to miss out on it. It’s a fine line to not cross. But honestly, I don’t mind you “missing” stuff because it’s your authentic experience.

  • @JoshuaRichards2010

    The primary reason players / streamers miss PDAs is that they are using their flashlight or the Seamoth's lights and this causes you to not notice the glow from the abandoned PDA as much. If you feel like it, you can try shutting your lights completely off, then noting what sticks out to you before turning them back on to explore.

    It is kind of fun to try to collect and grow all the plants and animals. When playing this game in early access with all the scanning and seeds I thought it might be some kind of xenobiology story. I was excited about that idea. I am glad they kept the intricate speculative biology in the game even if the story has going a different direction. It is part of why I love this game so much.

  • @dowahkin1852

    The reason behind not seeing the islands is because of progression If someone like you played the game for the first time and saw the island thats the first place they probably go. But the games story wouldn't make sense then so they hid them and waited for you to receive these audio lots to encourage you to explore a little bit more and find something you might not have expected for a underwater game.

    • @LukaelPlays
      @LukaelPlays  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Oh I totally understand the gameplay reason!

    • @JoshuaRichards2010
      @JoshuaRichards2010 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@LukaelPlays Well... given the alien tech in the islands with the portals having it shrouded is probably not far fetched. Islands can be hidden by atmospheric mist just naturally, and tweaking that a little bit to always make them hidden unless you go looking would not be a far stretch for whoever build the portals (I mean the QEP is pretty invincible but maybe they were afraid of a similarly advanced race happening upon it and blasting it from orbit? The Sunbeam did not notice it until they were on approach after all, and while not as advanced as this other species, we do have pretty handy sensors that can scan a debris field like Aurora despite being a simple trading vessel "out on the far side of the system") EDIT: The Aurora a) is burning and b) isn't being helped along with the mist by alien tech (potentially; I have no idea the actual canon reason, even after all this time & playing Early Access for years).

  • @KaelKnight
    @KaelKnight 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    I do believe the islands are hidden by a layer of refracting fog. Because of the alien technology on them warps just enough water vapor to hide it from view from the outside. It would make logical sense since the only large thing without any alien technology is the Aurora. So you can see it from anywhere but the islands only when you get past a certain point. My reasoning is, if you stand on top of the pod and look towards either island. Then bring up your pda. You can see the hole where the refraction is. It's like looking at water through polarized lenses.

    This specific PDA is the only thing that I would have maybe also written, but I kept back. The problem with Subnautica is, you miss that PDA, and you miss the whole Degasi storyline that you experienced this episode. It's nice that Subnautica does not force anything, but sometimes I think, if you can completely miss the best storyline of the game, that's also not good. A few more hints would have been good, or providing that PDA at a place where you find it 100% for the coordinates.

    50:42 There were a few TH-camrs including Jacksepticeye and Markiplier who played during Early Access (Jack's 'Septic Sam' is also craftable). The dev has said that without them boosting the game's popularity they might not have had enough money to finish it. An odd thought in regards to your intro:
    I wonder if the comments that are constantly going against your wishes of no spoilers and no backseating are skipping the intro entirely, thus never hearing the discussion. They're probably skipping right to where gameplay is occurring and thinking they're just trying to help without realizing it's the exact opposite of what a new player should experience.

    23:39 My personal favorite seamoth add-on was the storage because I hoard WAY too much and it meant I didn't have to go back and forth to my base as much lol. Although, the hull reinforcement did me wonders when I added it since I bumped into a lot of things 😅
    50:00 Idk why it makes me laugh but you getting out of your vehicle just see lifepod 7 over the side of your seamoth couldn't have been more perfectly timed. What are the chances?!
    My subnautica home was built right where you were at 1:17:49! The jelly rays were my absolute favorite and I thought the mushroom forest area was just too cool. The little ravine was perfect b/c it meant I could leave my base easily (without running into a mushroom lol), and it was far enough away from the annoying little bone sharks and ampeels to not be attacked by them. The comfort the ray noise gives me is right up there with the tranquility you feel with the reefbacks. 😊 It's so fun to see where people build their bases and their reasoning. My husband kept his base right next to the lifepod like you do, and loved having it there for ease and comfort of the shallows and their abundant resources. Each of our homes are so unique and comforting in their own ways and I love the freedom we have to build where and how we want. 💙

    Getting bullied by the bone sharks. But i guess you did enter their territory. And nothing wrong with the fear. I hate water, swimming, all of it, but managed to finish the game and its sequel and it felt great to finally conquer even if I moved slow during it. Sleeping through nights is fine, building a dozen mini-bases all over for safe spots is fine, a billion beacons marking everything is fine. A lot of the challenge in this game comes from conquering fears so just go at whatever pace is comfortable and you will get there. I was amazed by the end at how unbothered I was by things that were horrifying at the start. With every new fear faced, previous ones become easy.

    I think you're already doing the best option regarding comments. Having a mod go through them first should remove at least most of them and the biggest ones. Still annoying people can't help themselves but backseat/spoil even if with good intentions. Another option I've seen other TH-camrs do is record ahead in a game so spoilers or backseat comments are less relevant as you're a few hours ahead and likely found that out yourself already. This takes away from applying comments in real time but could be something to try? This is also best for when you're at the end of the game and people might spoil big end game plot twists or whatever, but you've already finished the game so it doesn't matter. Either way, enjoying the episodes 😊🐟🐠🌊

    Her asking for the Hardened Blade is actually a line from older versions of the game.
    Previously, there were 2 available blade upgrades at the modification station.
    1 is the heat blade as we have now.
    The other was called a Hardened Blade that did more damage, but didn't cook the fish.
    I don't know why it was removed.

    the thing with the islands is theyre kept invisible so people dont immediately head to land so the story can pace itself better. if the islands were always visible, new players would immediately try to go to them both since theyre the only landmarks besides the aurora, which you cant get to at first bc radiation. it wants to encourage people to explore on their own to discover them or the messages that mark their location rather than skipping the initial "oh shit i need to stay in the safe shallows because everywhere else is deep and scary". it does wonders for the experience imo, since you have to kind of force yourself to start going further and further out once you learn the environment, rather than trying to speedrun to the nearest landmarks you can see bc theyre above water/"safe".
    i know this is an older vid so maybe you changed your opinion since then, but i just thought it was funny since you mentioned game design re: landmarks in the same tangent 😅

    I saw someone name their seamoth Appetizer after their first seamoth was eaten by a reaper :D
    The search for lifepod 7 is always a trip. Like, I know more or less where it is and still can't find it first try.
    Bone sharks are probably my least favorite things in this game. They're just so aggressive!
    I believe Markiplier played quite a bit when the game was in early access and brought a lot of attention for the creators, hence the doll.
    The in-game eclipses get even darker, sometimes. They're awesome but definitely not as amazing as the real-life one was (I was close enough to see the totality, it was amazing).
    Spadefish. They do an insane amount of damage if you hit them, for such a tiny fish.
    I love this game dearly, but I am never going to say it is free of glitches and hooboy do they get worse as you go. Good luck with that.
    I am eternally amused by how a locked door is impervious to lasers.
    I feel a little bad for the Degasi trio. Paul was a jerk and Maida was a bit careless and poor Bart had to deal with all of it. Maida is my favorite but she's still a bit of an idiot.
    CTO Yu is my second-favorite.
    Your habitat dome looks really cool from the outside at night.
    The game does a pretty good job of leaving enough breadcrumbs to follow without holding your hand. If all else fails, check the blueprints, check the data downloads, and try to go deeper :D
    A possible long-term suggestion? If people are desperate about telling you little bits that you overlooked, maybe in the last episode of actual gameplay (whenever that is) let them leave suggestions and do a follow-up wandering episode. If you want.

    I agree the draw distance is sort of silly. You can't see the island from the life pod, but you can see the life pod from the island. Obviously just a game mechanic to keep things mysterious at the right times.

    maybe even show which entries you ahve in your PDA so that people don't need to go back through the hole series to check wether you found a specific PDA or Item

    For the SeaMoth rename, I think the Sea Venture would be a cool nod to the shipwreck that saved Jamestown. Long story short, the ship wrecked, all 150 crew survived, got to land and built two new ships out of the wreckage and arrived in America 10 months later. Neat story of survival.

    Honestly the islands are probably invisible for like 3 reasons (one is more of a theory)
    1. Wow factor where you find one (cuz if you could just see it, it wouldn't be as interesting)
    2. Optimisation reasons - Subnautica already has a big pop-in problem on even highest settings and the island would probably look really really bad from far away + would lag. The islands would be the only case of you seeing something large and explorable from very far away. Aurora sure is exprorable but from far away you really see some kind of flat-like texture and the actual insides of Aurora only generate when you get closer.
    3. This is that theoretical reason that really doesn't make sense but I guess suggestion of scale where the islands are way smaller in comparison to everything else so they can hide behind fog? Nonsensical but I thought about it so why not.
    I haven't really played Subnautica for a bit but I was sure the island fog was more dense. Maybe it's denser on higher graphic settings? Dunno

    *Breaks into a verse of "Two Out of Three Ain't bad."

    1:38:55 It doesn't really matter, since you use the game paused while reading PDA option, but sitting in a chair stops the hunger and thirst meters from progressing so you can read your PDA entries.

    Sitting is not just cosmetic. This is NOT spoilers or backsitting. In your playthrough it won't work because you have locked the pda, when you use it, don't consume water or food. But usually, most people play in other conditions. Most people see their thirst and hunger increasing as they read. If they sit on a chair while reading, the needs won't go up.

    A good instruction for comments is to try to be as vague as possible. For example, if "the player" missed a PDA, you can say:
    -> "You missed a PDA in the Degasi base near the purple mushrooms." (bad example)
    Instead, you can also vaguely describe the location and the object you are looking for:
    -> "You missed a story info at a deep Degasi base. (Maybe you'll discover it yourself while editing.)"
    I deliberately say "story" here so that the player can better assess whether they want to make up for it or not. If it's about scannable objects instead of a PDA, you can also remain vague:
    -> "You overlooked scannable, buildable objects in the cave with the large purple mushrooms."
    The more the player has to "find" or "figure out" themselves, the better the subsequent feeling of happiness and accomplishment. If the player is obviously wrong about how a system works, you don't have to explain the system, just point out:
    -> "What you think about how your solar panels work is incomplete." ;-)

    A suggestion about the comments: read them a little bit after you've posted that episode, for example by having a few filmed videos in the bank. That way, you're a bit ahead, and have a chance to realize many things yourself before reading it as a comment (especially mechanics or new stuff you explore), but also if it's something you've completely left behind and forgotten about it, you're still likely to catch it as a comment. It's not perfect, but it could be a good compromise :)
    (Although I still think having the mods screen away the most outrageous spoilers is smart)

Don’t pay too much attention to anything negative being said on here because your content and editing has been extremely entertaining to us! It makes no sense that people are complaining about going back to previous saves when dying, as if the average player doesn’t do that on any game.
