I wanted a cat really bad as a kid, my mom was allergic and we had dogs... so she got me a vhs of the cats musical... it gave me nightmares and I never asked for one again. She was a psychiatrist and I realized later she did it knowing I’d be terrified so I’d stop asking for a cat. I confronted her a few years ago and she laughed... this move makes me physically uncomfortable now lol

Honestly if you dissect Cats it has pretty much 3 underlying plots...1) the ball, just to de ide who gets a new life 2) bringing grizabella back into the tribe and how she became who she is now blah blah blah 3) is macavity, a smaller plot in the 1998 version and beefed up here to create more of a villain. Otherwise Cats doesnt have one obvious plot more like a few small ones that make up the story.

I will never understand why they’ve chosen to turn cats into a movie when there’s so many good shows that could be movies (I’m not saying cats is bad because I like the stage version, but the lack of plot and the terrible cgi doesn’t work on screen)
the only way Cats works on screen is if it is a Stage-to-screen film. trying to fit it into a movie plot doesnt work, it was never meant to be that, and trying to go the route of disney and CGI everything was a horrible idea. this makes me fear for how bad Wicked will be when they finally make it a movie.

In defense of the CGI in the movie. They didn't have the actors wear suits for species effects. They just had them wear brown bodysuits. So the animators had to hand animate everything. They also were severely underpaid and overworked. It's not the animators' fault really. The creators of the movie just got what they paid for.
Agreed. Also, they didn't give the CGI artists nearly enough time to make it good. This is what happens when the director says "Oh we will just CGI it later" without any consideration for the artists. It's like trying to fix a broken bone with a bandaid, fundamentally idk how they were supposed to take humans and make them look like cats without making it a full-blown cartoon animation.

Very good point, it's important to remember that the animators weren't the ones who designed how the characters should look or made the decision to do everything by hand. It's the director who signed off on that and clearly didn't even think about how incredibly difficult he was making things for them, in my opinion he's the one who deserves the blame here. Considering the terrible circumstances they had to deal with I really think the animators did the best they could.
And not only that, the movie was supposed to be in 2d animation at first, but they said "no! fuck this! lets cgi everything because that way more adults will come to see it!"
Haha... get it? because 2d animation is for kids only.

@@LithiaSinclair Thats true, but for a long time the original film adaptation was going to be a 2D movie with don bluth/steven spielberg back in like, the 90s. I think if you see the concept art for that it looks more interesting alone than this movie. But the original is also a ballet and the dancing is whats most important, so that couldve been lost on an animated film. I think the problem is it doesnt have the format to be made into a movie with a plot in the first place, and the design is so weird it turns off like, almost all of the audience
Lithia and the musical is based on a collections of kids poems. that why it kind of doesn’t have a plot and all super weird.

@@missfin.a5371 Basically they decide on which cat will be reborn. And then you het introduced to the different cats. At one point a cat is kidnapped, but they get him back very easily, which was a bit lame. But even the original musical unfortunately doesn't have much plot.

The original stage musical took all its dialogue(well song lyrics as there isn't dialogue) from an anthology of nonsense poems about cats by TS Elliott and Lloyd Webber either wasnt allowed to or didn't want to add to them when composing the music. The stage musical is entirely about the singing and dancing(mostly dancing).
..the stage version of cat HAS NO ACTUAL DIALOGUE, but unusually lots of dancing and singing. making Cats sorta special actual, just a series of songs and dance numbers actually :)
And that's why it's horrible

I know no one cares, but they REALLY did Mr. Mistoffelees wrong. They completely changed his personality. In the stage musical, he is confident and a big statement, but not arrogant like some of the others. He's fun, mysterious, and uplifting. They COMPLETELY SUCKED the life out of him in this movie and made him look like a shy, nervous little mouse who needs to build up his confidence. In the play he just is depicted as quiet because his magic and spectacle speak for themselves, but he's not like... such a weenie? idk
Also him and RumTum had this cute little (b)romance going, so he got hit with the NO HOMO stick, gotta give him a female love interest, else people might think the flamboyant cat wizard might be GAY

Nothing they did really reminded me of a cat. If the movie weren't called Cats, I never would have thought they were (trying and failing to portray) felines.

I couldn't get more than ten minutes into this movie. The stage play was amazing, but this adaption of it is just horrible. There was a direct to video film released in 1998 that was the stage play but minus the audience, done just for the video. It was amazing. I wore out first a VHS tape of it and later a DVD of it lol. If you want to see it how it was meant to be, go for that one.
Les Miserables did such a better version of using songs the whole movie to make a story, not that that’s a recommendation or anything... Edit: Lol this was just a joke at the end Dylan can do what he wants I was just thinking about movies that can actually do full song movie correctly, unlike this colossal mess
