About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn't have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit

Thanks for joining us this Monday to chat all things money! How does this compare to how much you thought full time cruising cost? And more interestingly (as we genuinely don't know)- how does it compare to land life?
61.58 pound sterling works out to $107.54 Canadian. No wonder I’m always broke.
Anyways Becca & Zac love your videos, and safe travels. All the best.
@@TeuluTribe Well, you've lived on land, haven't you?..
Did I hear right; the Galapagos is next?
Really?
I may die of envy ...
Thanks Becka and Zack...
Thank you for the update. It's always nice to see how you two are faring. Salty sea biscuits.
You said it, and I miss sailing. Life on a sailboat offers a unique sense of freedom and adventure. While it's true that you don't need to be wealthy to live on a sailing vessel, it's important you acknowledge that there can be substantial expenses occasionally, such as engine repairs, sail replacements, and marina fees. However, the overall cost often remains lower than maintaining a traditional home. I also believe the risks are comparable. Additionally, the unique adventures of meeting new people, making friends from different cultures, and providing them with support are priceless. You and fellow patrons gesture of helping the family with Starlink internet access, who assisted you when you had engine troubles, was incredibly kind and generous. I hope they use it for good things.
That said, I wonder if you have considered securing a vacant plot of land as a backup plan. Having a land-based HQ provides additional security and peace of mind, ensuring you have a place to return to if needed. Plus, it can serve as an investment or a seasonal retreat, balancing your adventurous salty lifestyle with the stability of a permanent residence, and perhaps homesteading.
I am 77 years old, I have trouble understanding how I spend so much staying alive and in our home. I wish I had done what you are doing. Your helping the couple with Starlink was superb, that is how life was when I was very young. You are living my dream so thanks for sharing with this old man
It is wild how money just seems to disappear sometimes 😅 Our pleasure Tom, thanks for joining us!
Dude, you're not as old as you think!
^..^~~
You absolutely unequivocally changed that family's life for the rest of their lives, for generations to come. ❤
We couldn't have done it with out our Patreons and all of you ☺️
Remind people of the importance of learning the skills needed to maintain the boat on your own. The majority of your cost savings are from installing, diagnosing, maintaining, and replacing items on your own. Labor cost aren't an option on any budget. Another great video! Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.
Yeah keeping the boat afloat and sailing definitely adds up. Cheers 😊
Some people in the marine industry call them e.g. a mechanic, but they just know a bit of what they need to know.
The quality of their work is sometimes great, and at other time really bad, and if the owner is really unlucky the mechanic made it worse than before he started.
I really do not know what more I can say to express my JOY, learning and yearning to experience the absolute wonders of these sailing adventures!
It's so heartwarming to hear your enthusiasm for our content. Thanks as always Dan!
I think one thing does stand out to me is that you folks are inquisitive about everything sea or land wise! You are teaching a lot about the lifestyle!
Hey Becka & Zach great to see your keeping the maintenance up and finding some beautiful places. Take care both
Hey Stuart! Just like you taught us 😊 We will, thanks 🙏
The cost of owning anything that you use will go up the more it is used, and the older it is. One big difference that most land based people don't take into consideration is, on a boat you are getting dual use out of it, your conveyance and your home, so to even come close to a comparison, you would need both your vehicle and home costs. It really a mote point as there is costs to everything, even eating. Love following your journey as you make your way around this beautiful planet.
Absolutely, there are always costs associated with everything, we try and make sure everything has two functions. Cheers John 😁
So nice to see when good people help others who are a little less fortunate. Legends
They really helped us out so it was the least we could do. Such a lovely family 😊
My favorite Brit sailors by far! Thanks for being regular with the content. I am fast becoming elderly and live these days through younger eyes. ❤ May you enjoy calm seas and many sunsets as I did when I was young...
That mean a lot, thanks Jim 🙏
Becka & Zack:
Amazing is such a snall world to describe what you have done for that family!!
I hope life will always reward you beyond your needs so you are able to multiply the blessings during your trips around the world.
💫⛵️💫
I enjoy your love for each other which shines through when watching your videos . Seems really apt that you chose the word for family in Cymraeg as the name of your yacht . Happy cruising best wishes from Carmarthenshire .
Thanks for the lovely comment, it always makes us smile seeing a comment from Wales. Cheers 🙏
good for you helping locals! To be able to help someone and do it is just the best feeling in life.
Great insight on the costs.. Then through in a sunset dripping into the sea, monkeys fighting/mating and that river journey . Wow. Loved the video
Thanks for watching! So happy you loved the video and all its elements.
Best part of a Monday. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
🥹 Glad you could be here!
@@TeuluTribealways ❤
Since following you from early days, you have found a new and beautiful confidence, I love it and the quality of your video is outstanding, more power to your elbow. Best of to you both 🙂
Bro, your videos are gold.
Another fab video. My head was screaming croc, croc, croc everytime Zac was in the water.
Me too! Eeek
Aww.. them crocs don't want skinny lil Zac. 🤣🤣🤣
you two are genuinely good people Love your channel.
Our boat is almost ready to go, we leave Europe by the end of October. I hope we will manage around 30k euros, avoiding marinas as much as we can
Love you kids! I always look forward to your Vlogs. Zach putting up the whisker pole during passage with no life jacket on was scary. One bump on the head and a fall overboard might mean goodbye Zach. You just never know what might happen. Safe travels. ❤
I’m 23 grown up on the water from nz. I’m gonna do exactly what your doing soo excited
Hi guys, you have come a long way and over come obstacles that have tested your ability
You have certainly grown with time and the highs & lows and found the ability to find your way
How great for you. As for $ well we all have to make the best decisions for ourselves & your the same and we that follow you are confident in you.
Beca went through some major stress in the start and yet you have grown through the process with the help of your great partner!
Now you get to enjoy your time together & we know you will experience the truth about daily life on your journey
You are going to have those ups/ downs but you will be able to make it through it now so enjoy it.
Hopefully going North you will experience some Champagne sailing all the way to Mazitland
I could go on, at75 I’m dreaming through you two and could ramble on
So have more fun people
Cdn. Dave
By "real cost of sailing around the world" I would expect a break-down of total costs for a year. This would include marinas & moorings, canal tolls, maintenance, diesel & food, camera & broadcast equipment, medical insurance, visas, etc. Has the boat depreciated or appreciated? If it's the former this is also a cost. You've both given up jobs so some people would regard that as a cost. But this may be partially offset by TH-cam-related income. Put all this (and anything I've forgotten) into a kind of balance sheet and you might arrive at a ballpark figure for the real cost of sailing around the world.
Well said
What they have indicated is only part of the true cost
The other important figure is their
INCOME I assume from TH-cam
@@alanrobins You really don't own a lot of money from YT.
Moreover, one should had an income from more than place, especially if one is creator.
@@charonstyxferryman
If you follow sailing Florence around the wold on you tube
For the last 4 years TH-cam and patron have funded their trip they have just returned to the UK last autumn after 7 years
These 2 said they spent all they had to buy the boat
Unless it’s the bank of mum and dad funding them
@@charonstyxferrymanI know it differentiates a lot depending on a number of factors, but generally 100k subs is generally considered a large enough channel to be a full time job, and they do (at least recently) get a much higher view than most channels with that many. Having said that they have grown a lot lately so I would imagine it was a lot less.
Thank you for the education an information. I am so close to buying my boat an set out on the crusing life
Our pleasure, thanks for joining us. Hopeful we’ll see you out there someday 😊
I am all choked up, thank you for being such amazing young people, sharing and loving your way around the world . ❤
You both are awesome , what you did to rally your patron community was so very touching. Obviously you both attract very good people. Love every episode,
You guys! that was so kind of you to help this family I actually got goose bumps thinking of how selfless you are
Glad you shared the costings of living on board, thank you 😊
You two are such a wonderfully warm couple. The family you helped were so grateful for your generosity and friendship. Once again the standard of your vlog was stunning. From the footage of the deck on board Teulu, the dramatic thunder and lightning and the beautiful dinghy trip up the river seeing and hearing all kinds of wonderful wildlife. Right down to my favourite little ants marching in line to their nest. You are so lucky to have this wonderful experience, but we are just as fortunate to follow your adventures. Please keep this amazing journey going 👏👏👏
Perfecting timing for a video on my day off :) I'm all about alternative life styles
Hope you enjoy!
@TeuluTribe always a absolute pleasure to watch your videos. Never disappointed
Nice to see you in Flashpoint last week, hope you enjoyed your session! Thanks for the channel!
Loved the adventure up the narrow creek. Those can be the best. It's really enjoyable watching you two talk with confidence, you two have grown so much. Very impressive.
You're a beautiful, fun and vivacious couple. I enjoy watching your vids so much. And every day I watch you, you inspire me further to get my little old boat (only a 27' Tophat sailer) up to spec, to take my 16yo daughter out sailing.
Keep having fun guys, and doing it with aplomb.
When you reinstall covers a thin coat of bearing grease will keep gasket from leaking.
As well as "Bust out another thousand", also "Broken or About To". Great videos.
My partner and i found your channel about a year ago, after first having the idea to live on a sailing boat! We thought we should probably find some examples of people who had made it work 😅 and we absolutely fell in love with your channel 😊 this last week we have just completed our competent crew course and have been to look at a few boats already. We can't wait to start this journey, and wanted to say thank you to you guys for continually inspiring us to follow our dreams 💙 love from uk 🌊
You better get a socket. That motor is pretty important.
Zack has such a baby face! 😂. Another outstanding episode. Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. Cheers!
You have a remarkable way of capturing the essence of life's journeys, weaving narratives that resonate deeply with the soul. Your storytelling is both poignant and enriching, offering a profound glimpse into diverse cultures and human experiences. And I am Floating Village Life
You 2 are Champions!!!! To see the faces of the family you helped with the star link was the greatest gift ever. And if I heard them right they’ve been getting some guests to stay there. Once Again YOU ARE THE COOLEST CHAMPIONS EVER ❤❤❤
For being a young couple, you seem to have your stuff together, more than most of the other couples your age. So keep going this route you are taking and you will get to whatever the goal is.
What a beautiful life you two live …..most of the time😁and once again brilliant video it always cheers me up
What's that comment that cruisers use? Cruising is just boat maintenance in exotic places. Or similar :)
As another commenter has said. You can't really get by without developing the best skills possible. To do maintenance yourselves or manage the maintenance being done for you.
Your journey and its ups and downs, sometimes literally, could've broken your relationship.
I don't know whether your relationship was as strong as possible when you started. But, either way, you seem to work very well together. Becca looks like a very good encourager / coach and at the same time, more demonstrative of her concerns in the moment. Zac comes across as pretty dependable in the moment and very willing to open up about things when recapping later. Sorry, I'm not explaining this very well. Together, you seem like a very good mix of personality traits and skills. Complementary as much as a very good mix.
The financial explanation is VERY helpful. As it helps those of us hoping to follow in your footsteps, judge where to go and when and most importantly, how much to realistically budget.
Of all the TH-camrs currently 'out there', objectively, I'd say that you're amongst the best.
For not using rose tinted glasses. For the high production values of what you publish, both in the raw content as well as the editing. I mean raw as in chasing all over town to 'book in' to a country, as well as filming right up to the point where you had to turn around in the river you explored in your latest video. Zac deserves something special for dicing with crocodiles!
I just realised why I admire you guys so much. You've had your moments of drama and disappointments etc., but you've literally kept calm and carried on ;) And, you don't use clickbait. Thank gawd! Now, I realise that you're only publishing what you choose to.
However, we all have our personal battles and dramas throughout life, so in choosing to focus on the sailing, exploring and people you meet along the way, is I believe, what makes your content so watchable. Happy travels :)
Thanks, I really look forward to your videos every week, that trip up the river was magic. Safe and happy travels to you both!
Another great episode! The part where you went up the river looked like a nice little adventure. Sharing some of the cost information helped put things into perspective. The phone call with the family you were able to help with internet was truly epic! I hope your TH-cam income has grown enough to support your cruiser/adventure lifestyle to the fullest and hopefully build a nest egg for the future.
I love your choice of music.
As for the grounding for lightning, wouldn’t the path of least resistance be the mast shrouds rather than the mast itself (Mast being aluminum and the shrouds being steel). What I’ve seen people do, is attach jumper cables to the shrouds and put the other end of the cable in the water.
Had to laugh...there could be crocodiles in the river....oooh rapids! Zach jumps in to push the boat! Just smear him in BBQ sauce next time Becka! (probably revenge for being covered in 'batter' and towed behind the boat when you "crossed the equator")
Just put 400 l of Red Diesel in my boat 0ver £600 !
So your £157 what a bargain
Take care keep up the great work
I was sold on the girl pouring the drinks, absolutely stunning!
Very impressive camera/drone work at 25:00 seconds through the 'rapids'. Well done.
Working on an engine with the boat structure blocking your view and movement is certainly an emotional exercise on its own. Many sailors use a double-filter system for fuel and water to reduce risks with varied quality supplies all over the globe. Perhaps you may implement this at a certain point. Good luck with the adventures.
Great video and info-thanks guys!!
Thanks guys. I wasn’t expecting to be off the catamaran quite yet. I was having so much fun. 😉 However, welcome home! You have some huge huevous Zach. Wading in a river with crocodiles in it. Great to see your friends taking advantage of the Starlink. Love you. Stay safe. ❤️🙏
Wow this exemplifies life is for living!.....enjoy the journey both of you stay safe.
Hi guys I have just found you! I have followed sailing the vagabond Australian family for years and love it, now I have found a British couple woo hoo ! Cannot wait to catch up on your journey and enjoy your future expeditions x great stuff very enjoyable especially as I am house bound
Just found these vids, very well done the both of you and thank you for sharing
Very nice video, storytelling (as usual). As to the "exponential" in costs, it's simply a matter of LOA being a linear (one dimensional) unit. Going from 30 feet to 40 feet length adds 33% in length, but the surface area associated with that number square and the volume number cubes. So anything that relates to the surface that relates to the 30..40 jump grows 78% and volume related to that 30..40 jump grows by 137%.
If you know the numbers for your boat, compare them to 1930 J-class Whirlwind (LOA 139 ft = 42.4 m - scrapped in 1935 - beam 21' 9" = 6.6 m - draft 15' 6" = 4.7 m - 158 Imp tons = 160.5 metric tonnes - 7,335 sq. ft sail area =- 681.4 sq. m)
The shear amount of lead under these sailing yachts alone is mind blowing and it relates to height above water, rig weight and this is probably area related, etc.. But the lever-effect and wind power are in there too. The 160 metric tonnes, really are a 3rd power thing. Only the interior of such a boat can weigh over 11 tonnes.
There's a handful of replicas now, that occasionally race, and I heard one of the owners say that he had not guessed that he would need some 30 people to race the boat. Talk about costs. Spending $€£ 10 million or more to buy one seems like a bargain to begin with. Exponential. Yes.
And you cannot sail into a nice marina with its draught.
Was nice to see the rear sail in use as well, in this video.
The monkeys I heard in your video when you saw them and said "monkeys" shouted to each other, "watch out, great apes, they want to eat us" when they saw you.
Excluding race boat made of special super expensive materials: It's actually more about the displacement (weight), rather than length.
@@charonstyxferryman - my ship-designer engineer brother taught me 45 years ago that "length" indeed is the least dominant factor in hydrodynamics. That's the drag coefficient at play, in a way, I guess. The point here was about costs, not speed.
I chose to take out LOA as metaphor to illustrate my point, as that is a number that each and every sailor iterates everywhere.
Another engineer once told me "give me the industry and the weight and I'll tell you what it costs." Here industry (and its state of the art) function as his relative price density ;).
In a way you are saying the same thing as my "volume being a 3rd power" and that makes us generally end up with more displacement.
Or, I illustrated the remark in the video that costs associated with owning, and living on, a boat may be exponential to size.
Impressive filming & editing skills on top of your sailing skills, wow.
Love your content ❤ Some of the best editing on YT. Keep up the great work 👏👏
On lightning-protection: I always attach 2 meters of chain to all stays and shourds. Kept my boat safe (touch wood). Others say that doing that might be very attractive to lightning, creating the opposite of what one wants to achieve. I guess there are still things in nature we will never fully understand.
Awesome video, also really cool to see you using an electric outboard on your dinghy, I've been thinking about getting one of them for a while. Best of luck and happy sailing⚓
You could put some chain cleaner like salt water hose to clean the chain
I thought you had 4 sails…Jib, Genoa, Main, & Mizzen…Appears your Boat ready for the World with all the Repairs/Maintenance you have done(Weather Permitting)…Continue to Stay Safe and Enjoy 😎
Relative costs between different size boats are closer to the difference in displacement, not the difference in length.
You're so brave getting in that river with crocs around!
Luckily the crocs don’t go up to the rapids! Or else it would have been pretty dangerous 😆
Lightning on your boat, hey team be careful with your chain around the mast. Nothing is telling you that the chain in the path of least resistance. the lightning can easily strike 10 meters from your boat in the water next to you. your chain will say welcome on board to the lightning!!!
Take care and thank you for sharing your adventures. 😅
How has the rainman system held up for you guys? Have you ever used the smaller counter top RO systems to filter sea water? My wife and I are currently in the process of this exciting journey (selling everything we own including our house, business, cars and then buying a boat to travel the world). We plan on beginning the journey next April from Florida. Going off of this video, we currently have a $2,000 mortgage payment, pay $400-500 month for water and natural gas, $1,000 month on food, $900 a month in insurance policies, $700 a month in car payments and the list goes on to about $7,500 a month in expenses here in Texas. Boat life has to be cheaper haha.
Thank You for a Great video 📹 this week. Ya'll have done very well and are getting better every week.
So where do you plan to sail ⛵️ too here in the Pacific? If you sail to the Big Island of Hawaii, you have a place to stay. The wife is a Great cook and the View from our lanai is unbelievable. So hopefully we will see your sails ⛵️ on the Horizon someday.
Until next week Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii.
Thank you so much for your kind words and generous offer! When we know a time frame we'll let you know 😊 Cheers Bill!
Costs are interesting but the experience priceless.i only did RTW on Clipper with lots of crew but even this was tough for an offce guy.enjoy while you can ❤😅
I have always been told to put the chain around chain plates. I am not a rocket scientist. However, I would reconsider placing the chain around the mast
Firstly, I love your video's and have followed you from around 5k subs.
Secondly, I'd need another freezer on board just for Bacon..!!
We're so grateful for your continued support since the early days. It's fans like you that keep me going! That's a lot of bacon 😅
Looking good guys...
Only observation i would make is its usual to check the head bolts torque after a new head gasket ..then reset the valve clearences...but your mate probably took them straight down the extra bit. .. to avoid that.
Engine looked as clean as a whistle. 😎👍🏻
Great shot of that Multi coloured heron type bird stalking on the river bank.
You might want to look into growing your own sprouting greens grown from seeds in jars.. to give off grid fresh veg all you need is seeds and water .. photosynthesis does the rest. ..but you do need to learn a bit of how too first. 😉
🧙🏻♂️🇬🇧 Drakes Island there was christened it before the one in Plymouth if im right Dan Snow has just done a History file U Tube on that one as its now being reopened as a meuseum.
We'll make sure to have a look at that next time we do engine work. I watched a bit of that the other day as the island was a favourite place of ours to eat fish and chips 😁
I fast forwarded the boat work. So I’m not sure where you are the the pictures You managed to get of the scenery are. Beautiful😊
Beck’s, you will have to get Zach to build you a seat just in front of the furler in the pulpit.
It would be interesting to learn what Your cost average was for each month since leaving england, including maintenance and repairs.
Another great vidio👍
Cheers 😊
Enjoyed the video! Thanks
Boat expenses are relative. In particular limited opportunities to earn money.
A lot of cruisers seem to skip Costa Rica for a variety of reasons. Which is a shame because it is otherwise a popular tourist and Ex-Pat location.
One related money question: did getting over 100k subscribers help with earnings? I noticed that at the same time, you decreased ads and sponsorship, which might have taken it in the other direction. Anyway, regardless, I love your channel and am so glad you're sharing your experiences with the world.
Beautiful sunset 🌅
Good of you to take Zack’s younger brother up the river Becks
Really good to see the mizzen deployed.
Where I live that would of been 19 pound 27!! Crazy that cost 60 there!!
Sailor great episode ❤
Thank you for video!
I wish you guys had an electric motor option with solar generator along with the gas motor.
Groceries in the US are through the roof! I'm spending more than double what I spent 2 years ago! Also I don't live in a super expensive state like NY or CA I'm from FL. I was thinking you spent 100 us. Not sure of conversation rate though .
Very lovely and up river.
You are braver than me sitting on the side of an inflatable boat with crocs on the scene.. lol. 😮
Wrapping a chain around the mast? Is the mast wet? Does water conduct electricity? How do you suppose if the mast is struck by lightning will the electricity travel down the metal mast and decide to use the rusty chain to connect to the sea or continue down the mast to the engine which is grounded to the stainless steel shaft and immersed in the sea?
You try to create the shortest path to an electrical ground as possible.
Many boats have a thick insulated wire to bolt to the mast and toss over the side when in a lighting storm.
May or may not work but it will not hurt.
Hello Becka, you are the super sailing girl....😊
That shop would be about $30 Aussie dollars. Near enough to 15 Pounds.
One quarter what you paid ! My lordy oh. That's a heck of a premium on price.
Thank uou for sharing x 😊
The family with the jungle B&B, life changing with the internet... Then you factor in the children's education from the internet and the exponential progress those few hundred pounds will make, it's just mind boggling...
This may be a dumb question but how did you learn everything to where you felt confident in buying a boat and sailing with it?
I would love to do this but I wasn’t raised near the ocean and don’t know where to start.
You asked what our costs are. My wife and I own our home - no mortgage. utilities, repairs and maintenance, real estate taxes, home insurance about $12.000 per year. Groceries for two seniors retired = $750 per month. Car 2019 Honda Insight Hybrid 38,372 miles = $1.31 per mile (includes original purchase price, car insurance, maintenance, tires, personal property tax, and gasoline). I assess my wife and I could live quite comfortably cruising as you do - except our age and health conditions prevent us from doing so. Still, you wanna trade places? :¬) Webhead USA
Great content, I'm looking to go away August next year with my dad for same life style, cant wait , can I ask what start link package you have, Is it roam as we were quoted £250 a month, over 3k for equipment fitting which was way too much. but at the cost you stated that would be great, keep up the great work
In respect of costs, it seems you have upgraded or added most equipment on the boat now, or do you still have stuff to do ?
There is always more stuff to do, but we are getting there 😅
