  • 10-26-2019: It was another Spontaneous trip. ***this means that this turns out to be the 3rd installment of my vehicle comparisons between Off-road oriented crossovers and dedicated body on frame SUV's/Trucks. We got 4 of us together and made a visit to Hungry Valley State Vehicle Recreation area. We almost had all the major Japanese car brands together. @revving9k has a Mitsubishi Outlander, @T4runnerbro has a 2019 4runner SR5 (with A-trac), @daklakfoto with a 2018 Forester XT and Me with a 2019 Honda Passport. I was really interested in seeing what Daklakfoto's TorqMasters rear locker could do.
    We have have 3 offroad tests (and 1 bonus black diamond trail). So grab your favorite beverage, sit back, relax, and enjoy the adventure!

    ***ATTENTION*** Please check out my other video (linked below) about the choice between an off-road oriented crossover and a dedicated body on frame off-roader (like the 4runner). I observe that the choice is between "On-road handling and efficiency vs. Off-road capability". One thing to keep in mind is that you must drive hours upon hours "ON-ROAD" to get to your destination only to drive anywhere from 5-10 miles on an established dirt trail to get to your remote campsite. Can a crossover make it? I think these ones can.

      So basically the 4runner is King!!! 👍👊
      If only Toyota would put a front locker and a diesel engine then it would be truly King of the off road!!! 👊👍

      Steven Peterson someone was asking me what was the best vehicle to get out and adventure. He said his wife was interested in a 4 runner, and that’s a pretty solid choice, but This would be daily driven. Fuel would be almost twice as much in the 4 runner, so that’s a huge thing to consider. Also, I’ve driven 800 miles off-road so far. That’s a lot right? But I’ve driven 20.5k miles total, and that only accounts for 4% of my total miles. So the 4Runner won’t be for everyone, just like the Honda Passport won’t be for everyone. I use to drive a 2008 TRD FJ cruiser, which is very similar to the current 4Runner.

      Steven Peterson the Jeep Wrangler JL is also a very capable machine and it gets a diesel next year. The all new Toyota trucks are also on the horizon, but we don’t know any details about them.

      True, they are coming out with a diesel option, I know that the jeep wrangler will get 30+ mpg but if you honestly got the money just engine swap the tacoma or 4runner for a diesel engine and you will get 36+ mpg with reliability as well

    These videos you do are awesome for a perspective buyer. I’m in the market for something and you are certainly steering me in a certain direction. I’ve owned a Toyota forerunner 1997 in the past and I can tell you that although it was an amazing truck it also came with some reliability issues. And it was pristine when I bought it from the first owner. I’ve also owned a Subaru and sold it back To the dealership after a couple of years due to a class action lawsuit so my trust in Subaru is not there anymore and I hate CVT transmissions. I am stuck at this point between the new Kia telluride and a Honda product. 99% of the time it will be driven on the roads and highways and every once in a great while perhaps off the beaten path but nothing extreme. Yes it is Mario! That thing is so under appreciated and forgotten about. You have a Gem of an offroad oriented crossover. Quite honestly, the 2nd test with the ruts wasn't a realistic representation of a trail obstacle. You can simply pick another line, which will always be available on the trail. Also, on the 3rd test, you were able to back down a little, pick another line, and then your transmission was there for you to pull you up. THE MOST IMPRESSIVE THING is that you got up the 1st obstacle. It wasn't exactly "pretty" for you and I, but it was a common obstacle that is encountered on the trails (limited line choice, and forced to drive up a shelf).

      You could certainly make it with a hair more momentum. I have an identical Forester, except for the locker, and I've been able to reliably drive up steep grades, between 30-45 deg, with ruts at least as bad as the ones here. You don't need to drive fast, just have SOME momentum at more than a crawl, and I've found the CVT to do perfectly fine.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Sullivan good question! So, I only used sand mode during the 2nd climb. I think sand mode is the superior mode when using momentum, but if you crawl in normal mode below 1600 rpms, the system may take better advantage of traction control. Actually! The reason that sand mode might not work for me for crawling is because the throttle inputs become much more sensitive, so trying to keep the gas below 1600 is difficult.
      I have a feeling that if I was doing 10 mph up these ruts in sand mode, it wouldn’t be a problem at all. I’ll have to do more testing, I actually recently found out about the 1200-1600 sweet spot of braked based traction control. Combined with the twin clutch rear differential, it’s seems to be pretty capable. It’s no true locker though.

    • @Purpleyamz
      @Purpleyamz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring Interesting about the 1200-1600 rpm sweet spot for brake-based traction control. Why would they limit it's function to this range (where torque is lower)? Perhaps for highway cruising in wet conditions or something? I always wondered how much the brakes assist, after seeing multiple videos (yours, Car Question diagonal, Driving Sports TV) where a PP's wheel in the air spins a lot and doesn't seem to "pulse" the brakes the way a Subaru or even the 4Runner does when teetering on 2 or 3 wheels. Would be interested to see if normal mode crawls better on that climb, with torque vectoring and TC on, although it seems in the past you've pretty much proved Sand mode works best in most off-road conditions. Also just saw a Volvo Cross Country failed Driving Sports TV's cross cut climb, so the Passport remains the only AWD vehicle (and only vehicle without locking difs) to make it up that hill so far. Maybe Honda felt that ivtm-4 was capable enough to not require too much brake assistance?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Sullivan i think the brake based traction control system is there to help crawl situations. The wheels spin in the Passport because the twin clutch rear differential is doing most of the power transfer. The spinning wheel is getting very minimal wheel torque. A lot of people will confuse that with being less capable, but when the Passport magically gets up an obstacle, they’re dumbfounded. LOL.

I would like to ask you are CVT equiped cars with 4WD good enough for light to medium off road? And second question, are NA engines more durable than downsized turbocharged ones? • @JonDZ_Adventuring

      Genosse Tito good question! Well, please google “how long does a CVT last?” The answer will be that the typically last about 100k miles or 161k km. It seems that the CVT’s in the Mitsubishi’s are a bit more capable than Subaru CVT’s but it’s also reported that they don’t last as long. I would avoid them if you could. About Turbo charged engines, yes, they are less reliable. I owned 3 of them back to back, and they’ve all major service (luckily covered under warranty). I’m not an expert, but this is common knowledge and I’ve observed these things to be true.

      66racer excellent comment! @rr8299 that’s sound advice. When I had my 2015 Forester XT, I tried to push the limits (trying to hang with the older Subaru’s). Many people mount heavier tires, and strap 150 lbs of gear on top. Be careful about doing that. Not only will it decrease capability, but you’ll also negate the benefits Subaru intended for, which is increased fuel economy. Operate within the limits, that’s great advice! @Lion Runner and @David Wethington you guys bring up some really good points. Out here in California, many of the trails aren't very difficult. Even the Monache Meadows jeep trail can be driven into with a stock CVT Subaru (with very careful driving). One thing that I would prevent me from hitting the trails or driving 760 miles (round trip) to go snowboarding would be the cost of fuel. I use to drive a 2008 FJ cruiser TRD with the massive roof rack, and getting places seemed to cost almost twice as much as in my old Subaru or my new Passport. I know it will never happen, but I'd love to see a diesel options for 4runner. All the premium engine CVT Subaru’s have the high torque version of the First gen lineartronic CVT designated TR690. Since 2014, the TR690HT has been in the premium engines. However, in 2018 Subaru made some improvements. They revised the chain belt. They continually improve the parts, I think it’s just the design. A CVT uses two cones and a chain (or chain belt in Subaru’s case). A traditional automatic uses gears. Only one of these two transmissions can actually lock up. However, There may be some hope with Xmode 2.0, since it allows wheel slip.
      That doesn’t mean a Subaru can’t compete test 1. Check out this Instagram clip. This 1st gen a Subaru Forester with a 4EAT transmission was able to make it.

    I own a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander GT, 3.0L V6. I bought this model because it did not have that stupid CVT transmission that everyone complained about. I can select committed gears in mine so I have the option of manual or auto transmission function. It's great for downhill and snow conditions. I don't know what year the model was in this video, but mine has 4 selections of what kind of traction I can use: Normal, AWD ECO, SNOW and 4-wheel drive. I really love my Outlander GT, but there are two things that drive me nuts. The visors are so flipping small and useless and the summer California sun is brutal and they do nothing. It's actually dangerous when I can't see a thing and have to use my hand to block out the sun. Second thing is the design of the Wheel Wells are more for looks than functionality, because there is no clearance and you cannot put snow chains or much larger tires on it. This is a deal breaker for me and when this Outlander mileages out, I won't buy another. I will go old school and buy either an older, well maintained Pathfinder, 4-Runner or Montero with manual transmission in mine. We go to the woods often, in winter and summer and I don't do serious wheelin' (my husband has a Suzuki Samurai he built from two of them himself, extending the wheel base and it has an air locker on it and 35" tires if we want to do serious things). But my Outlander is the general camping, backpacking, snowboarding, gold panning/metal detecting rig for comfort and also its ability to go places serious pavement queens can't or won't and it's roomy cargo area to load up with all kinds of crap is useful (hello Christmas Tree!) and I can sleep in the back as a 5'7" woman.

BUT, you are correct, the Jatco CVT’s that is in the Mitsubishi’s are a bit more capable with their 17:1 crawl ratio (compared to 12-14:1 in CVT Subaru’s). I saw an Instagram post of an Eclipse Cross drive “UP” the Pronghorn trail (which is a black diamond “difficult” trail). He sent it up really hard, and I have no idea if his suspension survived, but he got up!

      Ryan Haines he tried man. The Outlander GT does not have a front limited slip like the EVO 10, it’s traction control. Many companies, including Subaru, will use the term “E-differential”. This is the same thing as traction control. The Mitsubishi EVO 10 has real front and rear electronically controlled twin clutch differentials. My Passport has a rear twin clutch diff (true LSD), but at a 3mph crawl, I wasn’t getting up either. It’s a 30-35 degree climb, any flatter and we would all make it up with ease.

      As for design, why fix what isn't broke? Keep being called a dinosaur, because it's not all techy inside. When less stuff to break or fail, better it is for the owner.
      Who the fuck needs lane assist, auto cruise control, all that stuff that makes retarded drivers, in an off road setting anyway?
      Also, wrangler hasn't changed much itself either, but it's a Jeep, so the cults behind it seem to forgive it for being the same damn vehicle since inception. Aside from shittier overall quality over the years, and powertrian changes.
      Before my 07 4runner, I was looking at some jeeps actually, came across a 2015 Jeep Cherokee/grand Cherokee. Didn't even test drive them. One look, and I practically threw up. Couldn't pay me to drive a jeep, let alone sit in one.
      Plus, wrangler gets horrible fuel economy, can't tow for shit, they aren't all that great actually. But I suppose some people love being in the shops, more than on the road/off it. And like it up the ass, from their local Jeep/Dodge dealer.
      Jeep owners are like vegans, how you know someone is a Jeep owner? They'll tell ya. 😂

      At least I'm pretty much guaranteed, 250k+ problem free miles, as long as its cared for that is.
      Plus the v8 (though mine is a v6 model) that was offered for the 4th gens (03-09) is said to be best v8 ever made. With quite a few 1 MIL mile examples.
      Also, Lexus GX460/470 are pretty much luxury versions of 4runners, just as capable off road. All jeep has now is the wrangler, everything else is a glorified crossover, and shadows of what they once were. Aside from being the shittiest brand America sells.
      My 2wd is more capable off road, than a trailhawk is. 😂
      Not that I need 4x4. It's more than capable for my needs. And can always be built to prerun. Something wranglers/jeep in general were NEVER good at.
      Most versatile mid sized SUV. All wrangler has is cheap parts from its fallen brethren, and off road ability. It pales in comparison everywhere else.
      We don't buy them for the tech, but for the literally unmatched reliability and minimal maintanence needs. Plus, they have no problem selling like hotcakes, retain value far stronger for longer. Can haul your family, and pets, wherever you please, in comfort.

Just, I was done with all the bullshit failures that Ford puts into the 05 f150 I once had, from FACTORY. never in my life had I had a vehicle with so many issues. Went straight to auction with only 45k on it.
      I did extensive research. And although America is good at multiple things. Building reliable vehicles, worth the cost to buy and own, is sadly not one of them.
      It's better than any crossover, can vouch that much. Lol, has a 5k tow rating, which isn't bad for an NA v6 mid sized SUV, it's pretty quick for its size. (0-60 in 7 secs), and the v8 models with the supercharger can smoke the fuck out of a mustang gt500 on the strip, without sacrificing off road ability.
      A jeep will get you places. But a 4runner will get you there, AND back! less money on bullshit failures and repairs, more on mods and adventures. What's not to like really?
      Also, on r/4runner. Many once wrangler/jeep, and Subaru sti/wrx/forester etc owners, traded them in for a 4runner. And every single one said, they have zero regrets, and like myself, wish they done so much sooner.

      rr8299 Subaru has a legendary reputation as being the only crossover capable of traversing terrain like you saw in obstacle #1 (the cement shelf climb). They’ve been doing that since the late 1990’s (there are earlier Subaru’s like the Brat with a true 4wd system, but we won’t get into that). Watch my friend drive up it in his first gen Forester.
      th-cam.com/video/CqNX7eJCHis/w-d-xo.html
      So, Subaru owners have been asking for increased fuel economy and that’s the main reason why they switched to a CVT. It’s a trade off. While a modern Subaru may struggle with difficult terrain, it now gets a massive boost to fuel economy over the older 4 and 5 speed electronic automatic transmission while still being an excellent all weather vehicle. I think you may be surprised at where a CVT Subaru will take you. The camera does not do the justice on Obstacle #1. This incline is around 30 to 35 degree’s of inclination, it’s not easy to drive up a 6-8 inch shelf. This obstacle would be on the upper limits of a moderate trail, maybe even on the low end of difficult.

      The obvious reason is less miscommunication. You have a guy spotting you and he's straight ahead facing you and tells you to turn your wheel left so you turn it left. But he meant his left because he forgot he's supposed to give you your lefts and rights. Saying driver or passenger is the same direction for both the spotter and the driver so it's just less chance of miscommunication.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James Tom that’s a good question, and I believe I have an answer for you. First of all, the Subaru has an aftermarket rear locking differential. Both his rear wheels will have equal power going up the sandy ruts. He’s the only one of us with a rear locker. On the concrete climb, the Subaru was running into a 6 inch shelf (you can call it a curb) while trying to climb a 30 degree hill. The steepness prevented the CVT from getting enough momentum and the engine stalls pretty quickly too. I have friends that have gone up this obstacle with older automatic Subaru’s, with use of momentum.

      As far as the new Jeeps, they can get some decent MPG’s. Realistically, they can get 20 mpg highway. If you watch video about Mt Shasta Overlanding, a 2019 Jeep Wrangler sport with 37 x 12.5 inch “MUD Terrain tires” pulled 15 MPG’s doing 80-85 mph over a 625 mile trip from So Cal to Nor Cal. Big Boss unfortunately, here in the USA, the 4runner doesn’t have any competitors as a body on frame mid sized SUV. As an off-roader, it competes with the Jeep Wrangler which is substantially more capable off-road. But people love the 4Runner, it’s more dependable, and it has more than enough capability to get out and explore. Speaking of which, that’s exactly why I purchased the Passport, I feel it can get me to most places while still being much more fuel efficient and fun to drive. It competes with both the Toyota 4runner and Toyota Highlander as a mid sized SUV, but I have a feeling that the highlander would not be able to make it up any of these obstacles with its part time AWD system, at least at the speeds we go. Actually, out of all the crossovers, there aren’t many that could tackle the first obstacle. It’s at a 30 degree angle, but does not look like it in this video.
