WoooooWeeee everyone! I just got back from a trip to Lone Pine, California. There we played around in the Alabama Hills, visited the Whitney Portal and saw a frozen waterfall, and to top things off, we drove into a mine. Yes, that's right! Drove into a mine! There's little doubt that I actually needed my 2 inch lift to avoid any trail damage. This reinforces my theory that it's better to have your bushings wear out faster than banging up your ride with serious trail damage. I'll have the video up of this amazingly dynamic trip in a week and a half! If you haven't already, might as well subscribe :P I'll post a video up every 2-4 weeks, so you won't be getting spammed if you have notifications turned on. I’d say swap in Crosstrek suspension and then get the best Crosstrek setup. You can go with basic lift kits to something more extravagant like the race works coilovers
Love how they look lifted, wish there were more complete options vs spacers. Like icon or something. I also had vibration on acceleration when lifting my built 2004 by 2 inches. Heavy duty front axles resolved it. 👈 Sounds like a different issue on the SHs though, doesn't it?
My 04 with 2” ADF kit has always had a slight vibration on hard accel. TBH, I think it was there before the lift, too - but def more noticeable now. I have the auto trans, and I am also pretty sure it is the rear mount - there is quite a bit of slop in them. That may also be part of the reason I developed an issue with inboard DOJ binding on a recent trip through Oregon, combined with other factors. In any case, I’d like to try taking the mount out and doing my own mod using windshield adhesive to mould a bushing in place.
@@kootsmike5833 Does the vibration you feel on hard accel feel like it's coming from the front wheels or front drive axles? Feels like they're binding a bit?
#SaveTheManuals kind of hard to tell. I doubt it at this point, though - brand new axles. If it were a new symptom with the new axles, I might think it were the axles - but it’s not new. The previous problem (on my road trip) was definitely the axles - not surprised, as they were the originals with 155000 + miles.

Awesome video ! My two cents is that don't think that these cars and suv were not meant to be lifted. I think Subaru was going for that all weather vehicle that would give the driver the confidence and take the worry out of driving in bad weather. That being said its great to see the aftermarket subie performance company make a quality lift so that they can be lifted with minimal problems that come with lifting any kind of SUV. What I'd like to see is that the these company's start making better shock and springs combs , control arms , polyurethane bushings kits to really get the ride dialed in. I have not done much research on those things so they might be already out there. When I had my sport cars I pretty much had all my suspension aftermarket and it did wonders for handling , ride quality and some noise reduction. Anyway get video learned a lot and some things to consider when I get ready to lift mine !
Stephen Gomez I totally agree. I strongly feel that if you lift a Subaru, you are making a Trade-off, not necessarily a complete upgrade. So far, this lift was everything that I expected. Well.... except for the wobble that no one ever talked about.

Interesting about the wobble affect. Never noticed it on my 14 XT with a 1" 3/8" lift and this video is the first time I've heard of it. Going to lift my 18 XT 1.5"-2", so I will keep an eye out for that wobble. Good to know it's a cheap and easy fix though. Thanks for the info!
dustin boone I got my transmission spacer put in yesterday. It did the trick! Not only that, but I feel that the transmission is more tightly connected to the engine. I need to do more “observing” but it almost seems like I’m putting more power down now. That’s really a subjective opinion, but I’ll try to get some 0-60 pulls to back it up. One solid observation is that I actually hear my engine now. If you are familiar with the unfiltered sound of equal length header boxer rumble from a muffler deleted exhaust, It sounds just like that but on a much lighter scale (and No droning of course). this means that my NVH is increased, but now that I can hear what my engine is actually doing, in all for it!!!!

I lifted my outback xt for about a year ago and the last 6 months it has an annoying wobble only when accelerating.....in the last couple weeks it got really bad but it ended up just being a cv axle and now the car feels weird because I got used to the wobble and now it’s buttery smooth
I got my lift about a month ago. I went with the 1.5" front, 1-7/8" rear with standard height kings springs. I ended up with 1.75" front and 2.5" rear. I went lower in the front to protect the CV joints. The ride is a bit stiffer but overall i like the new feel. I haven't noticed any wobble at all, maybe there's an issue with your lift install or something else.
Funny, I also have a very annoying wobble in my 2017 stock Outback when I accelerate. I noticed it is about at 1700 rpm. Will have to watch what speed. Probably somewhere 20 -25 mph. Super annoying.
Any extra wobble, NVH etc after putting in that Primitive Racing transmission skid plate? Also, did you have to remove the heavy metal vibration dampener?
Jiminy Cricket yes, NVH went up. I have the details in the follow up video: th-cam.com/video/b0TBsYkhVZI/w-d-xo.html Nothing was removed, we just added the transmission spacer
I have a 98 Forester and I’ve lifted mine 2 inch in the front and 2.5 inch in the rear.... I feel no wobble at all and I wonder if your wobble has something to do with re-tightening all bolts associated with the lift kit? Recommend to retighten everything after 500km from lift, it sounds like something is loose with yours mate. Have it checked if you can. Cheers
pootang47 the wobble that people refer to is actually more of a shaking/shuddering. There is no loss of control, so wobble is probably the wrong word. This Shuddering upon acceleration is now fixed. A transmission spacer was installed to make sure the driveshaft is aligned at all times. Without it, there’s a whole lot of play.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring I drive a 2001 fozzy type s with kyb struts and A.D.F. lift 2inch frnt and 2 3/8 rear and oem springs and i DO get the wobble. I have 100k miles on her. I wonder if they have a insert for my trans? ( NON CVT ).
AznGuyn01 here’s ADF’s Instagram post about the part. I ordered mine for $56. The FXT needs a different CVT transmission insert and I’m not sure Nate carries them. I’m unsure about the long term effects of the driveshaft shuddering like that, but for $56 bucks to fix it, IMO, better safe to fix it 😃. It wasn’t terribly difficult for Nate to install this part. I think he just removed the heat shields to expose the driveshaft and popped the insert in. You just need to really get under your Subie. instagram.com/p/BpzmnT9Ay1C/?igshid=1sskcw31kt2jh
Thanks Jon, great video and as always appreciate your honesty about the lift. Too bad about the wobble, but at least their may be a fix! I have run aftermarket transmission bushings and they do work (I used them for drag racing), however if you put one of these in they sometimes can create additional noise, harshness, and even their own vibrations. Good Luck and thank you!
Hey Man, Great vid as always. I am currently thinking of just adding a 1" lift to my 2018 Forester XT. Do you think the wobble will be present with just a one inch lift?
Hey there Robert! I guess some people get the wobble, some people don't, some people don't notice it, and there's some people like me that really notice it. But no worries! It can be fixed! You just need a CVT transmission insert. I'll be getting mine put in next week. As far as harshness and handling, you'll get less of that, but it's so minuscule that it no longer bothers me. My only problem is that darn wobble. Before you pull the trigger on that 1 inch lift, please watch my next video. I have this theory that in order for us to safely many trails, we will need a 2 inch lift, OR a modified front bumper. If you look up the definition of a a high clearance vehicle, the minimum is 8 inches. The extra 2 inches makes so much of a difference. my next video should drop by tomorrow.
What I meant by that is, the 2 inch lift helps us get over that minimum ground clearance requirement so much more. My next video will show you examples of that. Have fun with your ride! #thelastgreatforester
my subi does the same thing, its transmission shudder, especially at hard acceleration from the line for me. spacers, change mounts fixes it, so im told
Angel, that’s a good question. Like WRX’s, a used FXT with 70k miles was probably beaten on. The 2014-2015 models have more problems than the 2016-2018s. I know you previously commented about the CVT and I want to make sure I give you the best advice I can give. From my experiences I think I’m confident in telling you that the CVT is not an enthusiast transmission. If you watch my videos “do you need a Turbo Forester?” I make it a point that you have to treat your FXT like it’s a princess. Stay on top of maintenance. Protect the low sitting engine and turbo. About a month ago, I actually melted my center diff by trying to get myself unstuck from deep snow. While the Subie was easily driveable, upon acceleration it felt like my center diff was binding up. I took it into a Subaru dealership and they told me that my CVT was only putting 80% power down and it needed to be replaced. They didn’t tell me why, but since the center diff is part of the transmission, I figured that was it. If you want to call this a CVT failure, it wasn’t the the typical, transmission slip and stalling that many are experiencing. Go watch Hijack Secondary and his CVT failing in his 2.5 Forester. So there you go, If you’re going to beat on your car, the CVT might not be for you. Now, what other options do you have as far as adventure mobile? Sheesh, not many. Subaru’s AWD system is in a class of its own.
Thank you, I think i asked him the same thing he is gonna end up getting a Tacoma from the sounds of it. I was thinking vw toureg tdi or some type of Toyota 4x4
The cool thing is that Subaru has your back with the 10year / 100k mile warranty. If you’re going to buy used with 70k, I couldn’t recommend. I bet Subaru would good will you a new one if you went just passed 100k miles. I actually traded in the FXT for the new 2019 Honda Passport. There’s been more and more videos of the Honda light trucks (ridgeline, Pilot and now Passport) and I was very impressed by the videos. Check out my Instagram @jondz_adventuring. I have a uphill snowy hill comparison video up. The reason I won’t go with a Tacoma is I’m too big for the vehicle. The cabin is tiny and no one would be able to sit behind me. Also the engine is anemic and the MPG’s suck. Highway driving would suck. Screw that! I use to drive a FJ cruiser, I’m not going back. Honda Passport has a quick V6, about 6.1 sec, has aggressive gears 4.71 1st gear with 4.334 axles. 200 lbs torque right off idle and the full time torque vectoring AWD is faster thinking than a CVT Subaru. Also, the rear differential has clutch packs that make it act as a rear limited slip differential. These are suppose to be Honda’s light trucks that are suppose to offer an alternative to something like a Tacoma. They won’t be meant for hardcore offroading, but don’t mistake them for cars.
Dude, the video was great (as all the videos I've seen from you) until the serious discussion was not serious. Trying to decide whether or not to drop the $1000 or so to do the 2" lift. :(
K Dowz, we found the “shuddering” or wobble as some people describe to come from the drive line not being lined up. A transmission insert fixed the problem and if you watch the follow up video, you will see. But, ya man! Wobbling can come from worn axles, or other things.
No because of articulation, On my Outback the shocks travel maybe a foot or so. The ride height is 8 1/2 inches so if you drive over a rock it floats one wheel into the air. Subaru doesn't have a "wheel lock" mode so when one wheel is in the air the rest of the wheels stop spinning and the car comes to a stop. You don't need a lift because the ongoing problem of floating a wheel becomes a problem sooner than ground clearance becomes a problem. That being said any "proper" 4-wheeler with a transfer case and a low range will get about 15mpg. Personally I have driven all the off-road trails in my immediate area and want to drive further to see new trails. Because of this I find myself in the position of having 300 mile trips more frequently. A Outback can get about 28mpg on the highway but I find that it gets about 25mpg when trail use is mixed into the equation. Because of the MPG problem I find myself spending 60 to 70 dollars to do an outing in my F150 and 20 to 30 dollars to do an outing in my Outback. This is why you need a Subaru for "adventuring" and a proper 4-wheeler for "wheelin". A Subaru will still get you quite a lot of places a regular passenger car wont it's just that off-road tires and a lift aren't something you need because the ruts, rocks and uneven terrain will end your run a long time before traction and clearance becomes an issue.
Parajared that’s a good take on needing one or not. Also, as said in this video, lifting a Subaru is a trade off. I have a few other videos after this one that shows the Subie benefiting from the lift, but like I said, it’s a trade off. Handling and driving dynamics are changed. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment 👍

Funny, I also have a very annoying wobble in my 2017 stock Outback when I accelerate. I noticed it is about at 1700 rpm. Will have to watch what speed. Probably somewhere 20 -25 mph. Super annoying.
There's a transmission insert to fix the problem. You can buy from: andersondesign-fab.com/page/4/?s=outback&post_type=product
Any extra wobble, NVH etc after putting in that Primitive Racing transmission skid plate? Also, did you have to remove the heavy metal vibration dampener?
Jiminy Cricket yes, NVH went up. I have the details in the follow up video:
th-cam.com/video/b0TBsYkhVZI/w-d-xo.html
Nothing was removed, we just added the transmission spacer
I do get the wobble, so do i need to get that kits thing that the guys was talking about?
Or just leave it, will be fine
AznGuyn01 here’s ADF’s Instagram post about the part. I ordered mine for $56. The FXT needs a different CVT transmission insert and I’m not sure Nate carries them. I’m unsure about the long term effects of the driveshaft shuddering like that, but for $56 bucks to fix it, IMO, better safe to fix it 😃. It wasn’t terribly difficult for Nate to install this part. I think he just removed the heat shields to expose the driveshaft and popped the insert in. You just need to really get under your Subie.

JonDZ Adventuring what the softest/hardest should i get?
AznGuyn01 when I ordered the part from ADF, they included a soft and medium density insert. My mechanic Nate put in the medium density.
JonDZ Adventuring i have 2015 crosstrek and I email adf they tell me get soft it most common one, or should i get medium like your?
Thanks Jon, great video and as always appreciate your honesty about the lift. Too bad about the wobble, but at least their may be a fix! I have run aftermarket transmission bushings and they do work (I used them for drag racing), however if you put one of these in they sometimes can create additional noise, harshness, and even their own vibrations. Good Luck and thank you!
OcFishHooked yup and after mods in my teens to early 30s you get to know mods = cause headaches. Race car/truck parts require race car maintenance.
@@TobyCostaRica That is very well said.
OcFishHooked and 2A556FMJ great info from the both of you, thanks!!
You live in the san bernadino mountains I'm in Arrowhead we should go on a trail run iv, got a Subaru sk
I recognize that road your in top town
No, your Subaru needs a 4 inch lift!
Amen!
Have a blessed week!
Thank you Lord 🙏🏻
my subi does the same thing, its transmission shudder, especially at hard acceleration from the line for me. spacers, change mounts fixes it, so im told
Rob, yes, that’s correct. After installing a transmission insert, the shuddering went away.
What did you use for the lift? Can you post a link?
I used an ADF 2 inch front / 2.5inch rear lift kit. Here’s the website:

Any problesm with cvt ?how many miles?i want a fxt just not sure if i should but one with 70 thousand miles
Great content!
Thank you! I hope to provide more helpful and interesting stuff!
The wobble is the front inner CV joints. Trust me.
K Dowz, we found the “shuddering” or wobble as some people describe to come from the drive line not being lined up. A transmission insert fixed the problem and if you watch the follow up video, you will see.
But, ya man! Wobbling can come from worn axles, or other things.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring would one of those carrier bearing spacer inserts helps with lining up the driveline after a lift?
No because of articulation,
On my Outback the shocks travel maybe a foot or so.
Handling and driving dynamics are
changed. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment 👍
