- TOLEDO, OHIO (Nov. 10, 2023) - 49 years ago today -- Nov. 10, 1975 -- the 729-ft. Great Lakes ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald sank in heavy seas in lower Lake Superior. All 29 hands on board were lost...their bodies presumed to be still aboard the ship, which lies broken in two in 530 feet of icy cold water. To this day, opinions still differ as to why the "Mighty Fitz" went down. I was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and served as a Great Lakes Tug Captain in my younger years...and of course, the Fitzgerald utilized Toledo as its home port. Plus, several of the Fitz's crew members lived in and around Toledo, including Capt. McSorley who lived near the University of Toledo with his wife. That said, the story of the Fitzgerald is quite personal to me. Join me, the History Mystery Man, for Part 3 of Season 3 with Captain Darrell Walton -- his uncle Ralph Grant Walton went down with the ship -- as we sift through some of the factors that brought the powerful ship to the bottom of Superior. Capt. Darrell also discusses the dive in which retired police officer Fred Shannon took part and what it means all these years later. We'll also reintroduce the Wilfred Sykes and the Arthur M. Anderson to the story and bring in the Fitz's sister ship Arthur B. Homer...all that and much more. Thanks for your support...please enjoy Part 3 of Season 3 with Capt. Darrell Walton. #EdmundFitzgerald #LakeSuperior #GreatLakes #GreatLakesShipping #GordonLightfoot
Live from the Arthur M. Anderson, heading down Lake Michigan to Indiana Harbor
Wow she’s still in service! That adds a new dimension to the story. Safe travels to you and the rest of the crew.
God Bless all of you on the Anderson.
Hello @keithbaker6931. I follow the Anderson on Marine Tracker - beautiful ship. Are you laying up in Toledo this year? Would love to take a tour and get some photos. Be safe out there!
Have a safe trip. The Anderson is my absolute favorite! I love to see her
Fair winds sailor..
My prayers to Capt McSorley and the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Thanks again, David...HMM
I met Bruce Hudson's mother once at church in North Ridgeville. She told me who she was, and I remember her as being proud of her son, and how Gordon Lightfoot was very special in her life. I believe that she has now been reunited with them.
What an awesome story...thanks for sharing it here. Yes...Mrs. Hudson has since passed. HMM
Captain Darrell is a national treasure..Thank you.
I'll second that! HMM

Greetings Anderson. Salute
I could listen Capt. Darrel Walton all day long. He got hands on year’s of experience something money or College education can’t buy.
I'm with you on Capt. Darrell...thanks! HMM
Today is my birthday I was 11 years old when she went down. I lost my father to the sea, so this strikes my heart every year!
Happy Birthday!
Belated Happy Birthday and so sorry for the loss of your father ❤
Condolences on the loss of your father. Have you ever told the story? Thanks...HMM
Same situation with the captain of the Titanic. He was on his last voyage, before retiring. So tragic for Captain Smith and Captain McSorley. RIP to all the victims lost to the Great Lakes. 🙏 I was born and raised in Michigan my whole life and remember the Fitz all over the news.
Wow...just one more voyage for each. So sad...thanks. HMM
I was ten and lived in Ashtabula Ohio and I still say a prayer every year for the 29 sailors on the fitz
Thanks for that...HMM
❤🙏❤️
I was 9 ,,, its clearly locked in my mind growing up in Toronto it was the biggest news story for weeks
Lightfoots song haunts me forever ... RIP
the irony that its the day before Remembrance Day has always stalked me
Interesting...you still in Toronto? HMM
My thought's and prayers are with the families tonight.......
Tell Capt Walton i said hello. Id be honored to meet y'all at Tony Packos on the East side.
I agree with you, Don. That's not the way I want to leave this planet . The thought of getting flipped upside down and crashing into the bottom of the lake is not pleasant . 48 years ago tonight, this tragedy played out . I always enjoy listening to you and Captain Darrell .
Thanks again, Steve...always appreciated. HMM
Awesome guys I'm listening at work .
Thanks Ron! HMM
Rest in Peace to all those lost. Hugs and prayers to all who love and miss them. ❤X 29
Forty eight years ago today. It still saddens me for the loss of those brave men that sailed the waters on the Edmond Fitzgerald and all that lost their lives to a watery grave.
Thanks Toby...I appreciate your words on the Mighty Fitz. HMM
You are more than welcome, kind sir.
Thank you, Captain D. Walton on this anniversary day.❤
Captain Darrell is an absolute gem & his insight is appreciated.

Absolutely...thanks! HMM
Prayers to those lost
Don, there’s a comment from WordenEntertainment in this thread that evidently has a contact that was on the Anderson and I just wanted to help direct you to it by drawing attention to it. Hope you’re successful in making that connection!!
Thanks Todd...I just answered that comment! HMM
The legend lives on
You two never disappoint. RIP to all the souls of the Mighty Fitz and all who went home to the Lord on the Great Lakes 🙏❤️
Thanks again! HMM
Very nicely stated, thank you
I just bought the book. Thank you.
You're welcome; thanks for watching! HMM
Rest in eternal peace crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald 😢❤😢 watching from Melbourne Australia
Glad you're here Glen (if I have your first name right)...and all the way from Melbourne! Awesome! Thanks...HMM
Captain Darrell is awesome! So much insight . Great videos.
So many thanks. Capt. Darrell is the best! HMM
God bless the caption and crew
Thank you American friends for learning from history and sharing with the world. - Greetings from Ontario (your honesty and diligence is greatly appreciated)
Thanks Richard; we're glad you're here...from Ontario! HMM
@@HistoryMysteryMan I was seven years old when it happened and it was the first time I watched the news. Ten years later I tried to get into the Port McNicol Inn to see Gordon Lightfoot but got refused for being too young.(Gordon was a local here)
The hotel, the ships and the elevator are long gone but I still hear the ring of that tattle tale sound when I come down the hill.
@@richardstever3242 Cool story Richard; thanks for sharing it here...love it! HMM
Outstanding. Once again you and Darrell have shined light on the darkest place in Great Lakes shipping history. Thank you both. It means so much to so many.
You're welcome Roger; thanks for watching! HMM
That was a beautiful frame, actually. :-)
Look forward to these videos every year.
Thanks...so appreciated. HMM
Ahoy Capt Darrell
Great video I could listen to captain Darrell all day what a very interesting man
You and me both...thanks again. HMM
Outstanding another great video. Commented on the last video you posted. Going to have family dig for old pictures.
Thanks David...let me know if you find any old pics! HMM
I love the videos. Michigan and Great lakes history will always get my click.
The Great Lakes are amazing! Thanks Nate...HMM
Great tribute! And as you say, "The Fitz is the Titanic of the Great Lakes!". so true.
Loved the bow shot of the launch of the Arthur M. Anderson. Thanks to Capt. Darrell for all of his insight - what an awesome story teller.
Yeah...Capt. D is the best. More stories on the way with "America's Captain" Thanks again, Todd...HMM
These videos with the Capt. Are phenomenal. I get entrenched in the history of it all. Amazing!!! Keep em coming 😊
Thanks! Earnhardt rocks! HMM
Love these videos with captain Darrell
Thanks...Capt. Darrell rocks! HMM
Well done. I’m glad that The Big Fitz and her crew are still remembered and honored. Thank you
You're welcome Wendy...thanks. HMM
Another awesome video.. Thank you...I do I have my Grandpa's union dues books from '60-68 with the Fitzgerald stamps in them
That's super interesting about those union books...love to see that. Thanks Jeffrey...HMM
@@HistoryMysteryMan I'd like to let you see them. I also found a few pictures from the Fitz and Armco
Feel free to reach me anytime with maritime photos you think would interest me...thanks.@@jeffreyrobinson5957
Love these videos with Captain Darrell!!! Amazing stories and history that he is sharing with us! Keep going! Ill bet he can tell stories and share history and theories for as long as you can film!
Capt. Darrell is awesome! Thanks again...HMM
Thank you, and Capt Darrell. People come together once a year for the Fitzgerald, but rarely a day goes by I don't think. Seeing ships come in to Manistee, I always think about that night. The things said here, like how she was still taking "summer loads", the charts being wrong at 6 fathom shoal, ect... they knew. Still, they pushed McSorely, the crew, and the ship beyond what they knew was going to result in this tragedy.
Since a very young age, my love and obsession of the Fitz has never faded...
R.I.P to those lost, and those who coped....
Thanks twisterzman...for sharing your thoughts here. We share a similar passion on the Mighty Fitz. HMM
Should there be a dive to the wreck to get the ship’s log, to check for deterioration of the wreck?
Tough call...but yes, I'd love to see the log book. Thanks...HMM
R.I.P. to The Big Fitz and all of its crew.
Just finished watching the livestream ceremony!
I intend to visit the museum this summer. Bit of a drive from southern Ontario. Love the videos!! Cheers 🇨🇦
Thanks! I watched the live stream too. If you're going next year, I'll see you there! HMM
I pray for the rest of the dead from the mighty Fitz. I'm glad you guys keep this going. I thank God I see the Anderson often, it reminds me of that night and keeps me remembering.
Thanks...so appreciated. HMM
Very excellent video! @HistoryMysteryMan I'm going to do a little private ceremony of my wooden Fitzgerald model my grandfather made by putting 29 drops of Lake Superior water I have onto it as a tribute to the crew. Last month I finally got to see the Arthur M. Anderson in person while she was downbound at Sault Ste Marie. I've also been doing more work on my screenplay for a potentially film adaptation. I'm also hoping to go to Whitefish Point for the 50th anniversary and possibly try to ring the bell. Did you get in touch with my friend William Maki who was the watchman aboard the Anderson that night the Fitz went down? Best wishes!
Thanks! Super nice touch on your little private ceremony. I love the Anderson...trying to figure out a way I can go aboard. Your screenplay sounds super interesting...keep at it! Do you know what part of the world Maki lives in? If you can help connect us, I'd be willing to make the trip for the opportunity to sit down with him. HMM
@@HistoryMysteryMan William Maki lives in Pittsburg, Kanas. He also has a Facebook account. I'll send you a message from there with his profile. I actually got to meet him by coincidence at Whitefish Point in 2009 when I was 11. Super great guy and has a lot to talk about what happened.
Love to meet him. I messaged him on FB Messenger...hoping to hear back...thanks again.@@wordenentertainment1997
Always love hearing all these stories. Again, Thanks so much
You're welcome; thanks for watching...HMM
I love your words Captain Darrell. Everything you said towards the end of the video is spot on. I’m going to leave it at that. Thanks for your service and all you do. Take care, God Bless and stay safe. I hope you make it to ring the bell.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts here, Greg...always welcome. HMM
Love your videos about the Fitz, you two have a great show together, I watch them over and over again
Thanks Scott...so appreciated! HMM
Good stuff as always!!!
Thanks! HMM
Hello HMM and Capt Darrell! Thank you for sharing this it is a sad time in history and one that was learned from. Capt Darrell speaking of riveted ships and welded ships- The Homer was seen to have had faults- welded- some that served on the Fitz said She creaked and groaned- welded- not to take away from the ppl who welded on Her- As a pressure vessels welder, If not properly prepped as in pre heating, post heating in both using a heat source such as a propane tiger torch to expel moisture from the steel, heat to desired temp , weld, and then using a tiger torch to gradually reduce heat to marry the atoms in a way that allows proper arrangement and no weak points once completed.Capt Darrell agreed, Hitting Caribou Shoal was part of Her demise. To find the Homer had stress cracks (all welded) and decommissioned because of. That does not speak against the welders who welded on the Fitz. It speaks about the 3 cargo holds in each the Fitz and Homer. Did both Sykes and Anderson < believe She has has 5? All welded vs Riveted? Each of those processes can be seen as sign of the times. Its always harder longer faster in the world of progress.Unfortunately safety standards were not a stringent as they are now maybe why no ship has been lost on the great lakes since the Fitz . God Bless all 29 souls on the mighty Fitz and their families. Thanks Again HMM, It is a real treat having Capt Darrell aboard.
Many thanks...and thanks for all your information...very informative. Yes...as I understand it, the Sykes and the Anderson have 5 cargo holds compared to the Fitz's 3. HMM
amazing video....captain daryl and you are anawesome team....the last of the real goods on you tube.....Keep on SAILING......the Finnster
Thanks again, Finnster! ROCK ON! HMM
I absolutely love these videos.....
Thanks! HMM
Enjoy watching these videos and hearing Capt Darrell’s commentary. I have spent many hours researching the Fitz and am captivated by the various theories surrounding the sinking and stories of the crewmen and families touched by this tragedy. I was not personally touched by the loss of the Fitz, but I grew up along the south shore of Lake Erie and seeing freighters was a common occurrence. Happy belated birthday to Capt Darrell, too! RIP Edmund Fitzgerald, her crew and all sailors who have lost their lives plying our beautiful Great Lakes. Fair winds and following seas to those who continue to sail. 🙏🏻⚓️
Thanks Victoria; I appreciate you taking the time to watch. I too grew up on the south shore of Lake Erie. The Great Lakes are truly fascinating, and so are the ships who plow her waters. HMM
Thank you HMM.
I knew you were going to post a video today.
I just heard Gordon Lightfoot song on the radio and i got a message that you posted.
Sent shivers up my spine.
Thank you again
You got it Roger. As always, thanks for keeping up with me. HMM
i love the history...especially living near lake Michigan, and loving the great lakes and Michigan History. Rest In Peace.
How cool...living near Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes are sooo amazing! HMM
Incredible video. Captain Walton is a beautiful human. I will definitely watch this more than once.
Gordon Lightfoot, I am sure, is with the crew of the Fitz. Every November 10th I pray for the souls that were lost! Thank you so very much for sharing this video!
Thanks Adrian...so appreciated! HMM
You're very welcome 🙂
Great video Don. It's AIS the captain couldn't think of. The automatic identification system, or AIS, transmits a ship's position so that other ships are aware of its position. The Marine Traffic Systen can then pick up positions
Interesting...I didn't know that either. Thanks for the info Chuck. HMM
I would LOVE to sit and hear these stories in person with Capt Darrell! Thank you SO VERY much for doing this!
You're welcome Rick; thanks for taking the time to watch. We'll build a campfire and we'll all sit and listen to Capt. Darrell! Cheers...HMM
@@HistoryMysteryMan Tell me where and when LOL! I'm headed to Pennsylvania from Minnesota over Christmas break. Do we need to make a detour somewhere? - Seriously Thank you for what you and Capt Darrell are doing! There are many who greatly appreciate it! (I'm sure you already know this.)
It's always rewarding to hear it. Sometimes I lay in bed at night scratching my head why I'm putting in all these hours, but comments like yours help keep me in the game. Minnesota to Pennsylvania in December...whoa! That sounds like a fascinating ride. I'm a guy who still loves winter...@@RickSwartwood
I just played Gordon's Summertime Dream vinyl record on my record player in order for the lost crew of the Fitzgerald when the video dropped, thank you man!
Going to play The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald tonight at 7:15 to pay tribute to the 29 souls lost.
Love it...crank it up! Thanks...HMM
This series is so informative

Thanks Kindly. Yes...I'd love to figure out how to reach Ed. I'll keep trying. Thanks for your support. HMM
What an amazing documentary! I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos!
Thanks for your support! HMM
Watching this from the big river. Love these videos hope there’s more again next year!
More on the way...thanks! HMM
When I was a youngster I remember hearing the song Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I asked my father what the song was about, and he explained to me about what had happened to the ship and crew. It still fascinates me to this day hearing information and stories about this great ship and crew as well as other ships lost on the Great Lakes. I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos with Capt. Darrell and the information that is uncovered. I grew up and live next to Lake Erie in the suburbs of Buffalo NY. and I’m very familiar with the power and majesty of these inland seas and the history of them. It’s always interesting to learn more about these amazing waterways. Thank You Sir.
You're welcome! Thanks for your interest in the Mighty Fitz and what we're doing here. We used to go into Tonawanda and Lackawanna with our Tug and oil barges...years ago. HMM
Great job! You guys are awesome thank you for keeping this alive
You're welcome; thanks Joshua...HMM
Don any consideration to you and Captain Darrell going on a speaking or town hall style tour.Would be fascinating and well received.Enjoyed as always HMM,best content on TH-cam.
Darrell mentioned something like that to me...maybe getting something together at local libraries or something. Considering it. Thanks again, John. HMM
It's a great time of the year to learn more about the Toledo Express. Thanks so much Don and Darrell for another super video. ✌️🤠 Brian
Our pleasure Brian! HMM
Knowing the day at hand, I've spent much of it in solum reflection. Thanks for the light you continue to shed .
Captain Darrell brought up a great point in welded versus riveted. Riveted would allow for less stress and cracking. Thanks again, I was eagerly awaiting this video.
Happy 248th birthday to the United States Marine Corp.
10-4 on the Marine Corp! Rivets would allow the ship to move/twist more, without fracturing. Thanks again, Roger! HMM
I remeber listening to the song of the same name. When I discovered, years later, it was a real vessel I went down the rabbit hole looking for all the information I could. But it does not compare to boots on the ground beating the streets. Thank you, Sir: For your will to entertain and enlighten the rest of us, and for the future content I can't wait to see.
Thanks...I really appreciate that. Your support means a lot to me...helps keep me inspired to keep going. HMM

Greetings from Benson, NC. A St. Clair Shores, MI. transplant. Great vids. RIP × 29 ❤
Thanks...love St. Clair Shores. HMM
Look forward to the videos/discussions you have on the Fitzgerald and the Great Lakes. Great viewing!
Thanks Gene...always appreciated. HMM
Ummm it's only 48 years. 😢❤ Thanks for another amazing set of videos!
50th anniversary is 2025 not next year.
Fixed...thanks.
It was great to see Capt. Darrell again. I've actually been thinking about exactly what happened, and I remember what Capt. Bernie Cooper said. He said McSorley sounded tired, but he was also calm. My theory is that if they didn't hit those shoals, that those welds they did on her keels simply broke apart. And I think we all know it's wasn't the hatch covers. People don't realize exactly how strong Lake Superior is. I think it twisted and turn and the metal they used for the keel gave out, which lead to flooding, and because it was overloaded, her own cargo turned against her, and when those waves hit the Fitzgerald, the waves pushed her down, and it caused her to hit the floor of Lake Superior, and it have an accordion effect, which lead to the stern to capsize, and what is left is The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald.
May the 29 men who were lost that fateful evening rest peacefully. And may Capt. Darrell's Dad rest peacefully as well.
And may the memory of the Edmund Fitzgerald live on forever
Super interesting...thanks for sharing your thoughts here. At the end of any day, we'll never know exactly why the Fitz went down, but we'll wonder till the end of time. Thanks again, Shawn. HMM
You're welcome @HistoryMysteryMan . To be honest, I think we will find out what happened. All we have to do is look at the evidence from a different perspective. From the Expedition '94 documentary, to the Deep Sea Detectives documentary, and all the other stories we have heard. There's always a time and a place when we will find out. With that being said, thank you for everything you have done for the history of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It's up to all of us to keep the memories alive
And even if we never find out what happened, it's more important to me to keep the memories of the crew alive, and all crew members who have given their lives on the Great Lakes...thanks!@@shawndavis8438
I'm a Minneapolis resident who has been to Duluth twice thanks to the best friend I've ever had,& the first time it took about three seconds for me to fall in love with it.What a cool vibe,it's visceral, indescribable.I'm a musician,I have a TH-cam channel,I have two Gordon Lightfoot songs on it,"Rainy Day People",& "If You Could Read My Mind".I'd love to do Fitzgerald, but damn,so many lyrics!I think it would be mega stress trying to memorize them all. When Gordon passed into glory,it was a class act, when they rang the bell 30 times,29 for the crew,& one for that great troubadour.Godspeed to those sailors,& to him.
Wow...I didn't know they rang the bell a 30th time for Gordon Lightfoot...that's super cool. Let me know your TH-cam channel; I will subscribe. I'm planning a trip to White Fish Point in '24...which will include going on to Superior, Wis. and Duluth...can't wait for that. Thanks Jerry...for your interest. HMM

I can’t describe the anticipation that overcomes me every November when I know History Mystery Man and Captain Darrell will be reminiscing about the Mighty Fitz!! A very grateful thank you to Captain Darrell for his service to our great country. I am so thankful to hear his take on the situation we find ourselves in politically. He’s absolutely correct, and if those of us who are like minded don’t start echoing his sentiments loudly we will soon find ourselves looking back and wondering what the hell happened and why did we allow it!?!
Thanks again, Todd. If we don't turn this country around soon, we're all in trouble. Keep sounding off...HMM
Keep em coming, every month you could do a mini series with the Captain!
Thanks again, p.k.5455. HMM

I’m from Australia and I love the big fitz, in fact I love all maritime legacies and mysteries, but I have a true passion for the Edmund Fitzgerald. It’s unfortunate it doesn’t get recognised in Australia, but respect to all involved on that fateful night of November 10th 1975
Well, I have friends now in Australia and NZ who watch my racing content...so maybe it's catching on Down Yunder...thanks. HMM

Don and Darrell, thank you for this series and your insight on this tragedy. Darrell I am very sorry for the loss you and your family have endured with your Father and your uncle. You mentioned Richard Orgel who served on the Fitzgerald as a 2nd Mate. Sadly, Mr. Orgel passed away in 2021. As you addressed in this episode, it is a matter of the clock ticking with contacting people who may have personal information or experience with working on the Anderson or the Fitzgerald. Thank you for your service and sharing your experiences. RIP to the crew of the Fitz on this 48th anniversary.
Thanks so much! Wow...we just missed Mr. Orgel. The clock is ticking for sure...gotta get a move on. Thanks for your support! HMM
