  • The world is well in tune with the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in a horrific November storm in Lake Superior in 1975; but the lesser known story of the Carl D. Bradley was equally tragic when it broke apart in Lake Michigan in another terrible November storm, this one on November 18, 1958. Of the 35 men aboard, two survived a frightening all-night ride in a life raft in 25-ft. seas with freezing wind and temperatures that haunted the survivors for 15 hours before they were rescued. Of the 33 men who died, 23 of them were from Rogers City, Michigan where one funeral after another affected the small lake town for decades to come.       I had been on the "Fitz", however, it was my brother Tom who sailed on her during a Summer break from college, at the same time our Dad was the Chief Engineer.

    Such compelling testimony. I’d like to sit in a country pub where I live in England - fire in the hearth, drinks on the table, dogs at our feet - and just listen to Captain Darrell for hours. I’d buy the man a pint or two of anything he’s drinking. And if any listeners would like to hear a tale of seafaring courage - search Penlee Lifeboat disaster - cruel sea - and listen to my own country’s 58 minutes of compelling bravery. These men are the best of us.

    Captain Darrell is a great story teller. So many of these freighters split in 2 , lack of maintenance seems to be the common denominator. No other ship sinkings on the great lakes since the Fitz. No one allowed to dive on her either. Liabilities are still a thing same as the lie about the Bradley being in one piece when it was in two. Captain Darrell was right, corporate greed superceded safety. Thanks again for this channel HMM, keep them coming! 👍

      Maybe not just about where the blame is laid or not or insurance/compensation being due but also a maintenance/repair issue; surely, of course, from a human standpoint regarding the safety and wellbeing of the Crew Members but also the value of the ship herself it makes more sense to keep her well maintained and in good repair than run her into the ground so she becomes worth little more than scrap (possibly at the cost of a cargo run or two)?

    As someone with ties to Rogers City and who has spent a lot of time there, thanks for covering the topic. I have family in the Rogers City area and I had a great uncle who did some work on the Bradley fleet. My uncle also worked at Calcite and I had some cousins who worked at Calcite. It was a tremendous disaster for that little town. I don't know anyone who was lost in the wreck, but my uncle and cousins did. Some of the people in Rogers City felt forgotten about and marginalized after the Fitzgerald disaster. The Bradley disaster was worse, after all. When the Gordon Lightfoot song would come on the radio my uncle would turn the channel "ugh, this song again". I don't think he was serious. But the people in Rogers City did feel like they were forgotten about and overshadowed by the Fitzgerald sinking. I got to meet Frank Mays, he was a nice man. I fished for minnows with him. The town of Rogers City just got the bell off the Bradley 10 years ago or so.

    Another fantastic video! I'm curious about CAPT. DARRELL's opinion of a film adaptation to these great lakes freighters? I know I want to do one of the Edmund Fitzgerald, but I would also do ones on both the Morell and the Bradly, but tell them in a honest and respectful way. Love hearing his stories.

    Yet another fantastic job do you and captain Darrell make a great pair. The port town of Roger city is 30 miles north of my hometown of Alpena. All those crew men passed away had a profound effect on that little town of about 3200 people. There’s a beautiful memorial down on the lake dedicated to the crewmembers of the Bradley. I worked with a fellow state trooper whose father was lost on that ship, he was just a little boy when that happened. Keep up the great work. Tell Captain Darrell he needs to get his own podcast going he’s quite the colorful character. Love hearing him. By the way, I got a tour of the Arthur Anderson at calcite harbor when my buddy was human resource Director for calcite about 20 years ago. That was cool.

      Thanks for your support! I've never been to Rogers City, but we used to go into Alpena with our Tug and Barge...loved that town. I wonder who your fellow state trooper's name was? His dad's name? Thanks for your service as a state trooper! I've already said to Capt. Darrell that he should start his own TH-cam channel. I'm certain he would be successful at it. But...to do it right, you have to be willing to commit 8-10 hours a day, every day, to make 'em go. It's a ton of work and commitment, but worth it. HMM

    Man I watch every channel on TH-cam that has anything to do with the Great Lake ships, and yours is by far the best. One of the reasons that is the case is that you have Captain Darrell and nobody else does. He is absolutely mesmerizing, and as I’ve commented before, I could listen to the two of you guys talk all things Great Lakes for hours. Another great video man, and can’t wait for the next one!

    I spent countless hours trolling/fishing Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Sheboygan. That lake can change in a heartbeat! Got caught in a storm with 25' swells and thought we'd never make it back to shore, I'll never forget the feeling of, 'this is it, just walls of black water totally surrounding us!" We were very fortunate to make it back whole!!
    I love watching your videos and find your in depth narration is always captivating!

    Another great video! I remember all three events, the Bradley, Morrell and Fitzgerald and was looking forward to your coverage of the Carl Bradley. My aunt was originally from Rogers City. Her family was in the fishing business and worked on the lake. I don't believe any of her relatives were on the Carl Bradley. However, I'm sure that her relatives perhaps knew some of the effected families. Rogers City is a small community.

    My Mom’s Uncle, Joe Krawczak, died on this wreck. His family is pictured at 0:16 . And I agree that this story would make a wonderful film. I know there has been some discussion about it over the years, but I don’t know how far that has gotten. There is a wonderful documentary called November Requiem about the incident and the raising of the ships bell. One last thing to note-The story about the Bradley breaking in two is FALSE. I am friends with Ric Mixter, a well respected Great Lakes shipwreck historian and expert and he has told me that there is sonar proof that the Bradley is ripped apart, but not broken. According to Ric, the keel or the unloading belt held the ship together so that it did not completely break apart. If the Bradley broke apart into two pieces, it is more likely that the aft end would have sailed on, exactly like the Morrell. What really happened was that the ship split, flooded, and the forward end (still attached to the aft) pulled the aft end up, out of the water, and then down to the bottom. This is why both sections are sitting more or less in line and upright on the bottom of Lake Michigan.

      Yeah...that photo of Krawczak and his family is haunting...and so sad. What a beautiful family he had. Interesting on the Bradley wreckage, especially since Frank Mays said he saw it break apart on the surface, and then saw it in two pieces on the bottom. I'm not discrediting anyone, but I'm not convinced either way. Experts will also tell me they know what happened to the Fitz when we will never definitively know what happened to the Fitz, short of video footage of it going down...and I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist. Thanks for writing in; I enjoyed hearing your take. HMM

      @@HistoryMysteryMan You are 100% correct-the complete truth to these tragedies will never be known. The only thing I can think that would span both possibilities is that it ripped on the surface and was open like a hinge as it dove. This may have made it appear to Mays as though it was broken. And as for the video evidence showing it broken on the bottom, everything I’ve seen and read from unbiased people who have seen the footage say it is, at best, inconclusive due to the poor visibility. But, as you said, short of being there when it happened or conclusive evidence in the future, we’ll never know. And really, in the end, it doesn’t matter. It was a tragedy to the men lost and their families and loved ones. Thank you for these videos and for telling these stories, I really enjoy them!!

    History mystery man and captain Walton for telling these men's stories and keeping their memories alive I always enjoy hearing these stories these brave men who died on the lakes deserve to have their ships and memories kept alive just sad that these ships had to sink and sailors have lost their lives it just amazes me that great lakes Captain's like yourself and Mr Walton want to keep the memories going big thank you to the both of you I just love our great lakes and our history around our great lakes

    That storm 'did' terrorize the country. I read rescue efforts had to contend with Mississippi River barge radio traffic well they were fighting the same storm. Great video! I've enjoyed Capt Darrell's insights before. I'm glad he's made himself available.

    I have been on a 100ft wooden fishing boat in the Gulf of Mexico. That was losing planks on wood in a storm in the winter taking on a lot of water. Could only imagine what they went thur on them ships in the lakes. I know what wooden timber on a boat sound like when they snap and break gives me chills still. Boat I was on we saved tho just barely but we saved it from sinking.

      @HistoryMysteryMan Richard Book died 11/18/58. He was a watchmen from Shelby county, Iowa. I looked him up cuz he was not from Michigan . Turns out he was raised by his older brother Melvin after his parents passed in 40 and 41. Richard's brother Mel was 18 and raised his 3 siblings. On top of that Melvin raised his own family right down the road from a long time friend of mine in Portsmouth IA. Very interesting reading

      I loved visiting Rogers City. First time was with my parents in the 1970s. They had a cruiser based in Toledo. The last was 3 years ago. I biked the Sunrise Trail and then pedaled through town to the Calcite stone quarry.

    I look forward to, and thoroughly enjoy your videos. This one did not disappoint
    The Bradley appears different to me, as the cause of this tragedy was strictly on the shoulders of the owners. They preferred dollars to the welfare and safety of the Carl Bradley’s crew.
    I encourage you to read Mr Mays obituary. He lived an awesome life, and accomplished so much after the tragedy
    Mr Mays was only 4 days shy of his 27th birthday, and passed away in 2021. Mr Fleming was in his 40s when the Bradley sank, but passed away at the age of 53 in 1969.

      Frank May's was 89 years old when he passed away. He was in his 40,s at the time of the sinking . I got the chance to meet him. He was very nice to me.

    I have a new respect for the harsh weather conditions in Nov in the Great Lakes. I just can't imagine the feeling of being onboard a freighter that is in the process of breaking up.
    The fixed life raft was very crude but effective. It was truly a miracle that 2 crewmen survived after such a long period on the raft.

    Help me understand. I do not know the correct answer. If a private citizen has a ice shanty, atv, car, sink ibto a lake. That person is responsible to remove it. They are fined every day until that equipnent is removed. Why are shipping companies allowed to leave or abandon ships in the Great Lakes?

    I used to work at Buffington harbor at a cement plant. We used to load coke into Canadian Steamship ships. I’d sit in that boat loading tower marveling at how huge and amazing these ships are.

    Thank You, Gentlemen ... The Bradley is "MY" wreck - living only a few miles from Seul Choix Pte. lighthouse ⚓ On a clear day you can make out the silhouette of Gull Island in the distance ~ and you Know that's where The Bradley went down.
    They put up a nifty little memorial to it all, at a lakeside park in Manistique proper ... unfortunately it often gets swept away & there's no big budget to keep it cleaned up . STILL , it's 10x better than nothing .

      @@HistoryMysteryMan There are signs along US 2 with a big picture of The Bradley, so you can't miss the park . The memorial is designed to inherently face you in the direction of the sinking .
      The Seul Choix Pte. lighthouse 💡is open for visitors all season .

    Why aren't the owners and insurance companies held accountable for sending crews out in bad weather in sub par vessels?
    For that matter, the Coast Guard and oversight authorities should be investigated for allowing these ships to sail in unsafe ships.
    All of these entities should be investigated for covering up evidence of negligent maintenance, over loading, and for dangerous shipping practices.

    In that photo at first look how beat up that bow is……….I was marred to a sailor that worked for olgleby norton as an engineer and this makes me mad…..the company knew the weather was horrible and ordered them to do this trip is irritating

    I’ve seen interviews of Frank Mays before and it’s unbelievable what they went through. And they got no compensation either for the disaster either. From the interviews I’ve seen of Mays he’s never seemed embittered towards anyone but man I wonder what he thought of the Coast Guard and what the company ( whoever dove to the ship in 59) had said of the ship that she didn’t break. Did Elmer Fleming ever give any interviews or like writings or anything like that? If so I’d love to know. And love the detail you both gave on the ship on the day she went down. Thank you for keeping their legacy alive.

    Have they consider that maybe some welding done on the deck maybe have started açrack .The reason that I say this is because I am a welder of 39 yrs and I have seen a bad stop on a weld turn into a crack
    After working and flexing for 20 years .

    I love your image of the "suit" making the call for the Bradley to make one last trip. Not that I'm insensitive to the tragedy that ensued.
    I'm sorry to say it, but part of the captain's job is to protect his crew by knowing when to tell corporate they're not going out. He ran contrary to the judgement of a number of other captains who made the right call.
