Although he's not in this video, there is another man I would like to give thanks to. Thank you, Gordon Lightfoot for telling their story in a great song, "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".
Oh I know..,.such a beautiful ballad. Mr. Lightfoot introduced the story of the Fitz to the world through his art. Thanks Farrah, for remembering the Mighty Fitz and her crew...HMM
I was just wondering if the tragedy would have slipped through the cracks of history for the majority of ppl, without a connection to the tragedy, if it wasn't for the popularity of the song. So glad it was not only written & recorded, but that it was such a hit. It allowed so many to learn about the Great Lakes, storms, ships, and most importantly, the hardworking and brave souls who live and die at sea.

At that time and place, those men symbolized or 'epitomized' the 'hard working' middle class family. They showed up and did they best they could for their families and each other and so knowing this makes their loss all the sadder.

Being from Wisconsin on lake winnebago growing up. This was the Midwest version of Titanic. We learned about the Fitzgerald and her sinking as part of our history. Thank you for the videos!!

I feel the same way about the end of October through November. For me, it is the "Season of the Witch" memorial celebration. This is the time of year when my books pertaining to shipwrecks, models of freighters and other great lakes memorabilia come out of storage and are prominently displayed around the house.

Interesting interview. The next one is already waiting for me to watch. I'll have to go back and look for the original interview with Captain Darrell. I'm sure you're aware that on every anniversary of the sinking, the beacon is lit at Split Rock Lighthouse. Living in Minnesota, my wife and I drove up there for that event several years ago. It was a cold and blustery day with the wind off the lake, although nothing like the day when the EF went down.

I was a young boy of 8 years old when this happened, I remember the news story and everything. I even saw the Fitz as a kid in Port Huron, as a teen I read everything on it I could find. This interview is great thank you so much for doing it

Your 2-part series with Capt. Walton last year reinforced the desire to visit the Soo and Whitefish Point….the wife&I were up there 2 weeks ago. Of course, 2 places we visited amongst others were the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point and the Museum Ship “Valley Camp”. Seeing the ship’s bell at GLSM, and the the mangled remains of the lifeboats at MSVC really drove home the stark reality of what happened…..and brought context to the information provided here.
As more information has came to light, a somewhat clearer picture of what really happened is gradually appearing. I appreciate your efforts and that of Capt. Walton……would LOVE to hear more of what he has to say in regards to the matter.
As a personal observation, I think the crew of the Fitzgerald knew exactly what was happening towards the end with the “hot-mic” moment of Capt. McSorley’s order of “Don’t let anyone out on deck”……and the fact that one of the pilot-house doors is still dogged open to this day. With seas as rough as they were on Superior that evening, there’s only ONE reason anyone would want to leave that vessel…the fact that one of the wheels men was found on the bottom wearing a life vest is pretty telling, and I’d wager that if/when the mortal remains of his fellow 28 crew members are discovered, they’ll likely be found wearing them as well…only wish all of those men could’ve been able to and make it home safely.

Another interesting video, thank you. I shuddered when you disclosed when the Edmund Fitzgerald was eventually launched there was twenty nine ship builders hanging onto the stern railing. I'm not superstitious, but I soon could be. The launch didn't go to plan, a spectator had a heart attack, and WOW, twenty nine ship builders going down with the ship as it hit the water, a ship that didn't want to sail. God bless those twenty nine souls.

Its True!!! wow......29 men on the stern of the ship at lunch! Just eerie man
Ican remember being a senior in high school and seeing the report on CBS news by walter cronkite about the Fitz sinking , when i went to bed that nite i teared up thinking about those 29 men vanishing with the ship , my father was in the navy during the korean war and served on the uss Walke DD723 ,it was hit by a torpedo of the coast of north korea .The torpedo hit the engine room on the port side where my father worked and bunked killing 23, all the guys he lived and worked with and wounded 35 others , he described to me the feeling of loss plus the fear of the ship sinking which was a real possibility that evening . I've been fascinated by the sinking ever since it happened ,when that report came on my dad just got up and went outside and sat for awhile ,it really bothered him.The only reason he didn't perish with his shipmates was he was topside mailing a letter home to his mom.

@@HistoryMysteryMan He passed away in 2009 i think his survivors guilt ate at him his entire life , another part of his story was related to me by my mother after his passing ... she showed me the letter he had mailed home that nite along with a telegram from the war dept. telling his mother that he was missing in action and presumed dead the day after the torpedo strike. then another telegram informing her that he was alive and accounted for ,she also received his last letter home that same day.

I was recently on Superior near Whitefish Point and it sure gave me an eerie feeling knowing (the popular version) of what happened out there and that the crew are still down there. Good story about the Fitz we lived along the Detroit river and seen the ship a few times and Zug Island was where it docked in River Rouge the first time I ever seen the ship was when they launched the ship i was only 5years old at the time we live a few blocks from the shipyard me and my older brother would go down to watch them building the ships thank you for posting your video

Another great Edmund Fitzgerald video. Very interesting information about the day of the launch. In hindsight it was certainly foreboding. The details about her loaded draft marks were also interesting. I'm now curious about how and why her Provisional Load Line Certificate was changed. Keep up the great work guys!

I walked by the Fitzgerald every day on the way into work, the winter before its ending. It was parked next to Great Lakes Steel in Ecorse, Mi...along with the Benson Ford. At the time, the name caught my eye because Fitzgerald was John Kennedy's middle name.

Excellent video, thanks. Captain Darrell is absolutely priceless - he just seems to know everything about everything but this comes through a lifetime of experience.
I don't know if it was one of your videos or a different one but I'm certain that somebody said that the actual keel plates on the Fitz were loose and this was one of the problems that was going to be rectified over the winter lay up.
McSorley must have known the state of his ship and so it was reckless of him to overload her by 3000 tons even in good weather. He was due to retire after this trip, he should have taken a bit more care.

Oh my. I too counted 29 men in that stern picture. Another sign of future trouble in my book.
I think about the Fitzgerald quite often. Throughout each day, I monitor ship traffic on my computer via AIS (Marine Traffic). I always follow the Anderson. Luckily there are numerous great webcams which show ships arriving/departing various Great Lakes ports.
Really enjoyed this video. Yes it's that time of year we should remember the Fitzgerald crew and all the brave guys and gals who support our great shipping industry.

@@HistoryMysteryMan Right now the Anderson is 1/2 up Lake Huron going north at 12K. It's on the way back to Cedarville, MI after dropping off their load of limestone in Windsor, Canada. Their current conditions are light 7 kt NE winds and 1 foot waves. Safe travels for them.
Great, great, great stuff, thank you. I agree with just about everything in this video. I also agree that Bernie Cooper's word is gold. Loaded too heavy, charts not accurate enough in 1975 and it hit bottom. I believe if they would have stuck to the traditional southern shipping lane they would have made it. I know Darrell was careful not to mention someone's name but I'm curious if there is another book coming out soon? I have read about everything that is available right now so I'd be interested in a new one. Thank you.

My dad did a season during the summer on a boat called The Winnipeg. He told me they docked many times beside the Fitz in the 1960s. He spoke of how beautiful her red paint was and he even once stood on her deck, and spoke to the crew. He also remembers just how big she was, and how she'd barely squeeze through the welland canal.
Thanks Jack...those are awesome memories to carry around. My dad, who was a tug captain, towed it in and out of the Maumee several times. They didn't call her the "Toledo Express" for nuttin! HMM
@@HistoryMysteryMan He also saw here a few years before she was lost, he saw Captain Mcsorley in person, but never met him directly. He said Mcsorley was about 6ft and fairly thin, and that he was a gruff old fellow, but enormously respected by Fitzgeralds men. Dad also said how the Fitz used to just seem to leave a beautiful wake behind her in the water to. Lastly he said she had a hell of a voice when they'd blow the horn, and that Edward Ryrerson is the closest sounding to The Fitz.

My great grandfather was the launch-master for this launch. My grandparents attended the launch and took video footage. I believe my parents still have that footage around somewhere.

What ever happened to the Fitzgerald, happened before the shoals area. The report from the Fitzgerald’s crew to the Anderson was at 3:30 PM. The Fitzgerald didn't pass the shoal area any sooner than 3:10 in the afternoon, to which it was not only still daylight, but they had both radars intact. Also the crew from the Anderson testified that the Fitzgerald was steering a near exact course-line as the Anderson during this portion of the trip. Safe passage was made beyond the shoals

Ive seen the Edmund a few times as a kid, my dad was a welder and helped build out the Silver Bay facility so I spent a lot of time in the Duluth area as a kid. Rail road cars leaving the mill all pass over a scale so they know exactly how much each car weighs, otherwise no accurate way to validate value..and the taconite balls made great slingshot material.

I think that if those men were meticulous about the clamps it might hav saved there life but it was too dangerous by the time they thought about it. 70s technology helped that ride to the bottom for sure.

My dad ran away from home in WV and was in the Merchant Marines at 16 years old on the Great Lakes! I remember when the Fitzgerald went down, he talked about his experiences, especially in November. I can't imagine a 16 yr old having those experiences, but so glad he got to, because he lost his sight in Korean War. Thank you so much for you sharing your passion with us!

He makes totally valid well thought out viewpoints. The ship had set records throughout its life, so it had been loaded to the gills, and hogged and sagged its way into premature old age. And then to be told Mcsorley used the keel as a battering ram to get dockside 5 times in the month leading up to its sinking is truly a revelation. That would have given the already doubtful keel an accordion type loading as the weight at the rear pushed the bow through the silt. Then there's the shoal, and the summer load lines in November as well. Too be honest I'm amazed they made it as far as they did. Thanks for another great video, RIP 29🔔

Yes, although I'm a minority the story of the Fitz made it across the Atlantic, and in the 4 years I've been aware of it I've studied the lakes and the freighters avidly, as I have a heavy interest in engineering and vehicles of any type. The videos on Bruces' challenger were most welcome, I love me some Mopar although they are very thin on the ground around here. I'm currently shoehorning an Audi V8 into my daily, mostly because I can👌🤣. As tonight is the 10th of November, I'm celebrating the life of the Fitzgeralds' crew and watching all the documentaries on it I can find, and yourself and Darrell will feature heavily. Being a former Marine and a fan the song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. November 10th has two meanings for me, one is the Marine Corps birthday, and the day of the wreak of that massive freighter. May God be with the Marine Corps and the souls and the family of the Fitzgerald. As I write this comment I start to realize the two events took place exactly 200 years apart the Marine Corps was formed by a act of the Continental Congress on November 10th 1775 the Fitzgerald went down on the same date but the year of 1975.

@@HistoryMysteryMan also another fact I didn't mention earlier the original mission of the Marine Corps back in them days was to provide security for naval ships against piracy. As a matter of fact the United States Marine Corps does not have its own department they fall under the department of the Navy hence the name Marine, because of Maritime traditions

I'm not sure who policed the load lines on the Fitz. But, the Fitz knew where they were when they left the dock. The Captain took that chance.
Shouldn't have ever been allowed to depart....least I'd not think so....load lines are they're for obvious reasons
Captain Darrell is a hell of a storyteller.
Something about a kindly old timer with a beard that just makes you want to sit back and listen. I would watch a video series of him telling tales about the history of the Great Lakes in a heartbeat.

I don't know anything about ships, but do you think maybe they were trying to get into shallow water so they couldn't sink? And if that's something that's doable, why didn't they try to get closer to shore or in an area that wasn't very deep and ride the storm out there? Like I said, I have no knowledge of these things, so I dont know what a ship is capable of or not.. But it seemed like the route they were on brought them close to shore or island's in a few different spots.
It is always interesting to hear Cap Darryl tell the stories and give his input. And he has some pretty special items for you. Could listen all day.
These are great questions worth exploring. They were so close to Whitefish Bay where they could have gotten protection from the natural shoreline of the Bay and yes, could have easily beached the ship on the bottom in shallow water. But he was so close and come so far across Lake Superior that I believe the Captain believed he could make it. Remember, they were using outdated charts, and he, more than likely, had already gone aground once...and all the while in consistent 25-ft. seas...he needed to get off that lake. Thanks again! HMM

Excellent interview 👏, I'm from Ireland and wasn't even born until years after that disaster but I have recently become obsessed about the Edmund Fitzgerald and how awful the final moments must have been for those men. May they all rest in peace.
More interviews with Darrell and Tom Walton please, there stories are fascinating. Even their stories about shipping on the Great Lakes and day to day life on board those big freighters would be much appreciated.

I am a former USCG, Aircrew team member.
I have questioned my thoughts many times from a navigational stand point.
The question is ????? At what point did the captain or chief engineer determine there was suspicion or sustained damage to there vessel!!
At that point, did they realize from their years of experience,,,,, they were going to founder, determining the distance, had they elected to not check down, however could they made the decision to increase speed to full revolutions on the prop shaft, and close the distance between that time, and beaching the vessel on whitefish point? Or would the increase speed have inflicted more structural issues with the vessels already compromised structural issues? My thoughts were that if they had kept up full speed, would they have been able to make up that 17 mile loss from backing down thereby being able to beat the vessel?
Randy...thanks for your feedback, contributions and service in the USCG. You're asking all the hard questions. If we had it all back, the right answer is to stay with their southerly and shorter route around the Keweenaw, at full speed ahead. But in the weather they were in, I can see wanting to check back, especially if they knew the hull was compromised. Then of course, they had no radar and didn't know their exact position, which is why they checked back to begin with...so the Anderson could catch up (within 10 miles) to serve as the Fitz's eyes...so many scenarios. HMM

I would be very curious to see if you are familier with the relationship Caption McSolrley had with Caption Dudley Paquette. Frm Dudleys book and his take on the events of the sinking. I got the distinct impression there was some bad blodd between those two men.
The sykes loaded directly accross from the fitz. Dudley was a weather ship and he was well known and respected for his abilities.
So why didn t these two guys talk .
That would be intersting to see what was the old timers knew about these two men.

@@HistoryMysteryMan - Ironically enough, the next video you did with the bearded one, as he was talking about all those ships that have gone missing in that certain triangle within the Great Lakes, I had just seen on the History Channel a show talking about the Bermuda Triangle, there's one on the west coast in/by Alaska, and then there's the Great Lakes one and I want to say there's another one?? and many of the things that he spoke about in his interview with you, I had just seen this past week discussed in this History Channel show talking about these things! So amazing to me the timing of all of this and me learning about the fact that we have one in the Great Lakes too, similar to the Bermuda Triangle. I grew up in Bay View which is right on Lake Michigan so I love Lake Michigan, and I have that tie I guess to Northwestern Mutual having worked there for 35 years, the fact that Edmund Fitzgerald was an Irish Catholic and I'm Catholic (German and Polish though) so I don't know - it just all resonates with me very much. Northwestern Mutual, by the way, overlooks Lake Michigan...just 1 block away. We have gorgeous views of the lake! So blessed!!! Thank you for reading my comments!
