    I think I found your channel last week. I've been canning peaches and peach pit jelly and teaching my 13 year old daughter to can pickles (for 4H). She's canned squash pickle medley today and bread and butter pickles and has relish salting now and I just took a good deal of the leftover cucumbers for pickle relish. I have about 15 qts of chopped cucumbers and onions in my big mixing bowl now. Thanks for keeping me company while I chopped cucumbers.

    With regards to your son and packing peanut butter. Check out the Power XL Duo food sealer. I got mine about 2 months ago and LOVE it. You can make individual snack packs etc. would be perfect to pack and seal the peanut butter. I have a Food Saver, however, I like the portability of the Power XL. • @modernhomesteadalaska
      @modernhomesteadalaska  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ummm well spices don’t actually go bad they loose flavor. So resealing the spices every time you open can make them last 3-4 years according to some studies. I try and do more around 1-2 years of a spice on hand and not try and push that 3-4 year mark. If you don’t get the air out 6 months to a year is all a spice lasts

    • @modernhomesteadalaska
      @modernhomesteadalaska  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great question. Yes you should have. The storage I’m working on I have the goal of only 1 year and to rotate through it. I’m not where I’m putting back for 20-30 years. Getting the oxygen out is they key so weather it’s with an absorber or with a sealer for short term it doesn’t matter to me. But fir 20-30 years I would have both put an oxygen absorber and still sealed it.

    May sound like a silly question, but there are 4 of you. I understand bulk storing, but why so much product? Like, it would take my family 3 years to get through all of your product you just have on your shelves.

    • @modernhomesteadalaska
      @modernhomesteadalaska  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@LynnK67 good question, it’s actually 8 now. That I’m stocked and feed several days a week. Also remember my husband lost his job in Jan. Of this year. We are still trying to build back up after that, it will take my guess 2 years for us to get back where we were. We have ran out and low on many many items as I cook from scratch to not eat out or buy pre packaged or processed food. It’s not nearly as much as you think when you are forced to eat off of only what you have stocked up. Home canned shelves are nearly just empty jars with exception of things just recently preserved. Lastly, I’m not stocked up on perishable things or “short shelf life” always some exceptions, but it’s better given our situation over the last 7 months to have to much then not enough. Nothing is going to go bad if it does take 2-3 years to get to it say in a normal year when you don’t only eat from the stock. Hope that clears it up
