    I think you did a fantastic job! It is a huge undertaking and it truly never ends. Great work! You should be super proud of yourself. If someone unsubsribes because they think it's taking too long, probably hasn't put in the effort it takes to prepare on a massive scale like this for a family. Just the time to plan where, how much and what to store is time consuming not to mention costly. Great job! I enjoyed spending the time with you and the family along the way. I look forward to the next adventure!

    I can't believe someone would unsub just because your basement isn't finished. Call that a blessing truely because they would be critizing everything you do or don't do. So honestly, in my opinion, I would be glad those jerks are gone!!! You do you, they can go pound sand!!! I love what you have done. Looks awesome!!!

      Wow that’s actually amazing. We are real not here for show. We realize we did the most crazy thing in giving up a 16 year career and ownership in a company to chase a wild dream before it was to late. We want others to just come along as we try and figure it out. And we know we have enough skills we (hope) believe we will get there. It’s a journey. So thank you for joining ours!

    • @momfromcc2934
      @momfromcc2934 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@modernhomesteadalaska you choice may seem crazy to others but seems smart to me. If we wait for the perfect time or when we have every perfect skill set to do what we feel is best for our family, opportunity will pass us by. I made a "crazy" move in 2017 I felt was best for my children's educational needs. Didn't even know how I would financially pay for it. But I did it and my children are in a better place academically. Family members talked poorly behind my back, accused me of thinking we were too good for everyone. But I kept my eye on the Lord and my children's needs and made the decision that was best for our little family. It was almost too late for my son so I am so grateful I didn't listen to the negative comments and unsolicited opinions. When we are at the end of our lives we will never look back and say I am so thankful I built an amazing career and made a bunch of money. We will look back and be thankful for the time with our family and how we cared for our family. We are blessed to be the caregivers of our families.

    Bungee cords on the ends of a cut to size cargo net, hooked to the shelf uprights and to hooks on the beams above the glass jar shelf would work well for earthquake control with easy access. You get good at that stuff living in Greece too.

    So here's my suggestion I would definitely get some pallets and cut them down to the width and length that you need to put on those shelves. Because that wire mesh is going to start to bend over time. That is not going to be sturdy at all. And it's not easy to slide things on it. Yeah I would either that or get sheets of plywood they were thick.

    GREAT JOB! One small suggestion ... Since earthquakes DO occur in Alaska, it may be a good idea to secure your shelving to the wall and place a board across the front of each shelf. May the Lord bless you and your family in the days ahead. :)

      Thank you. Funny story our daughter was in a mood one day and we were building and she was with me getting paint. And says I want to paint the door bright yellow. It will feel happy when it snows so much. I said great if we hate it it’s just paint we can change it. I agree though it’s a happy color.

    Edit: I reorganized a spare bedroom closet into longer term food storage. Organized my pantry closet and preparing for fall. I don’t think I’ve stated, but I live in Michigan.

    Newer subscriber here because you seemed so real from the few videos I have seen. Super excited to see all your videos. Amazing amount of work. We have tried to get containers for more long term storage but even finding them has been hard in my area. We are currently visiting my parents and stopped to get mason jar lids and hope to find gamma lids too. You do what you can when you can and you did a ton of work that is going to make your life so much easier!

      Thank you so much. It has been so hard yo get lids. I ran out and that’s how we ended up with the black and yellow. Went back to get some black and yellow for car emergency kits all gone! So good luck and best wishes you find what you need.

    Looks great
    I would add more paper towels and toilet paper for your family size. I live alone but out in the country and I keep 4 big this of each and personal things. I don't go outside if it ices because of falling. From the strokes I have nerve damage and hurt bad with Im cold. So come winter I have all big things and as much of the things I know Ill use over the winter most things like that I keep 6 mos. At all times.
    I seem someone do a meal kit in a big ziplock bag. I think I'm going to make some and keep a week or month food in a tote. I think having 2 or 3 month meal kits is something I will be working on. I have a year 25 year food. I don't get into in a closet. Love what your doing proud of you. People who have bad balances or problems need to get bigger things in before winter because of falling. Not just at home but at a store to the car or pickup all they can.

      Totally agree on the paper products. It’s that thing that until recently was still so low inventory so I stayed away from big stocks. But should reassess now that it’s fully available.

    Hi there new to your channel, from Northern Manitoba Canada. Just a thought/suggestion.....you need to consider the heat from the wood stove, maybe now is time to build a wall for your food storage area in basement. To keep that entire area cooler....as the heat will make the freezers worker harder. But still an amazing job 👌 love it!!

    • @modernhomesteadalaska
      @modernhomesteadalaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. We will get there. Luckily they couldn’t be further apart in the basement as far as heat transfer goes. I agree we had a deep freeze on our garage in Arizona ended up moving it inside

      Welcome! Happy to have you. It’s so amazing to hear others doing the best they can with what they have. We were in a rental in AZ before the move. No storage at all!! I used my bedroom and the closet and under the beds. You name it to make it work. The basement though you are right is a dream come true.
