  • ZF/Chrysler Eight Speed RWD Automatic Transmissions
    (Completely new modular design unit to accommodate a variety of applications)
    -
    The ZF8HP family of transmissions has only five clutch packs like 6HP, however, they contain four planet sets, all simple gear type. The layout of the unit is compact. There are several different models of the 8HP, depending capacity. They initially ranged from the 8HP30 to the 8HP90 for GEN 1. There are now more models for GEN 2 & 3. Beginning in 2012, Chrysler added the line. Initially, Chrysler purchased the 8HP45 from ZF but in 2013 started to manufacture their own version of the design called the 845RE.
    The 8HP is a one-piece case modular design. The transmission uses ASIS (adaptive shift strategy) to enable the TCM to adjust operation throughout the life cycle. An adaptive learn procedure can be performed if issues exist. The procedure will monitor clutch fill time, fill count & fill pressure. Fail safe will default to 6th gear.
    To limit drag, three of the five shift components are always applied. Torque converter lock up strategy has also been improved to enhance performance and fuel economy. Certain models have start-stop.
    The transmission is drive by wire with a solenoid operated park mechanism. If power is lost, park will have to be released manually.
    The valve body is Internally controlled (mechatronic) w/TCM. It contains nine solenoids (two for park).
    The pump is a Chain driven remote access vane type with splined converter drive gear & aluminum cover / housing.

    Great video. Amazing how easy it comes apart. Almost Like a 6l80. My 8hp70 is giving me that 2-3 and 4-5 flare I've seen other people experience before. Only under very light loads sometimes but shifts beautifully with anything more the 5% throttle and shifts like an animal while hammering it. Figured it was chryslers tuning but I did a diablosport tuner and it's still there. Might throw a valve body at it.

      @bmf88 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a new 5th gen ram with the 8hp75 and it also has the flare shift issue under light 5-10% throttle. I seen something about when u replace a battery it does something to where the dealer has to refresh the ecm/tcm dumbest thing I've ever heard if that's even true but I will say when I replaced the battery that's when it started. Other then that my truck has been flawless with 81k miles so far.

      @@bmf88 I just had hemifever do a tune for me. Flare is completely gone. I did the zipkit and it didn't like that. I ordered a reman valvebody and truck wouldn't even come out of park. I put my valvebody back on and shifts are beautiful until trans warms up. Yesterday it stuck itself in 2nd then 1st until I unplugged the battery. I'm going to pick up a low mileage unit today. I'm done screwing around with this one. I was trying to find out if a 75 would swap over but don't feel like throwing $1000 on a gamble right now.

      Yes it has a convertor. A quite complex one at that. There's tons of writeups about how to service out there. It's fairly simple. If u have a dodge truck like me wear good gloves cause the exhaust blocks the fill bolt

    Now if ZF only thought to let us have a dipstick and fluid change... but because we're a lease society, seal it up because who would drive one 123K miles and need to change the oil?

      So someone I know has this transmission in a Chrysler and the trans fluid has never been changed and it has 180,000 miles on it and it still works fine do you think it would still be okay to change it or keep old trans fluid

      ZF recommends 50-60k miles for the 8HP
      even though BMW and Others say you don't have to service. I choose to agree with ZF because they engineered it and know what they are talking about and a salesman on a dealership floor is just saying what he is told to say. I just completed a 8HP pan/filter and fluid change and on the 2016 535i, the filter was black, magnets were covered in normal wear material levels and the fluid was dark and glittery. I would like to note that the driving style this trans has been exposed to has been extremely gentle by an elderly driver. all normal wear at 60k but I don't think id want to that multiplied at 150k miles. IMHO

      Don't believe the th350 guys from the 70s. These transmissions operate very different from the old stuff that "you shouldn't change the fluid" I always do trans services no matter the milage and have never had one fail. Change it as often as you can. You can't over-maintenance one.

    • @MrCarttbone
      @MrCarttbone ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattboski2339 you are giving wrong info man. these things should have a fluid change every 50k-60k. That is what zf says on their website. Chrysler saying it is lifetime fluid is straight up misinformation. All the guys that actually work on these things know that lifetime fluid is not a real thing. You need to be replacing the fluid, or else you will be replacing the transmission
