    I assume with that Game of Thrones example she used Daenerys because she's the most recognisable name in the franchise even if she wasn't the most fitting. The thing is she could've used Dany to fit her example if she just said something like "remember that one time Daenerys pretended she didn't understand Valyrian only to reveal it's her mother tongue while conquering a city". Instead of going for an actually thought out example she went with a half-assed surface level reference and I feel like that speaks volumes about the whole book.

      level 1: woman is pay less than man because man hate woman
      level 2: it's not true because women go have kids and suchlike
      level 3: it actually is true across certain age groups but this is accounted for by a lot of women's choices in the work world
      level 4: these women's choices are actually rooted in a sexist system and societal context should be analysed in relation to all studies on the wage gap and interfering factors

    • @saraheerie
      @saraheerie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +103

      @Toxic Neon Gas To answer the question: Well if women get paid less why not hire only women??? Huh!
      Women are paid less by using loopholes. Yes, it is 100% illegal to pay a woman less just because she’s a woman. However, it is not illegal to pay her less if you consider her to be under qualified for the position or for needing to work fewer hours due to having a child. It is not illegal to pay your part time workers less than full time workers (hourly). Basically if Susan has a baby and needs to cut her hours, of course she’d make less by default, but it’s not illegal for them to also cut her hourly pay. To make this simple. She was making 10 an hour working 40 hours a week. That’s $400 a week. But now she needs to cut back hours due to having a baby. So she cuts back to 25 hours a week. You’d think she’s make $250 a week. But then her job cuts her hourly pay to $8. Now she’s making even less money. Of course they can do this to a man too but men are statistically less likely to cut back on work when having a child.
      Another example is claiming she’s under qualified or not as experienced. It’s usually because women are commonly seen as incapable of doing certain jobs as well as men. Thus, despite being completely qualified and sometimes even over qualified they are still paid less because they aren’t viewed to be as valuable as their male counterparts.
      You couldn’t just hire women because that would be discriminatory towards men. You could get away, theoretically with hiring mostly women but then you’d have to pay the few men their the same wage of the women unless you want to claim you’ve hired all incompetent women to do a job. It’s much easier to get away with hiring few women and paying them less under the false notion that they aren’t as qualified.
      It also doesn’t help that jobs scare people into thinking they can’t discuss their wages with their coworkers. Then no one knows if they’re being paid less or more than another for the same job. And it’s also important to remember that your experience is not everyone else’s and using your experience as a way to dismiss these issues doesn’t work.
      Personally I’ve usually always been paid MORE than my male counterparts but that’s mostly because they were fucking idiots lol. I’m talking basic hourly CS type jobs. I do remember going to an interview at Walmart (I needed some extra money) and my boyfriend worked their part time as well. I applied for the same exact job he was working (he’d only been there a month or so at this point) but they were gonna stare me off $1.75 less an hour than he started off with. I asked why and they said “that’s just our starting pay for everyone” and I told them that I know a guy who works here (my boyfriend) and he started off with more. They said they changed their starting pay. 2 weeks later my boyfriend was “let go” and they called me back saying they weren’t gonna go with me. Best thing to ever happen to us honestly LOL.

    "Unlike Lily, not everyone can have their parents supporting them for a year while they go out and chase their dreams." Yes!!!! A thousand times, yes. This is what Lily Singh doesn't understand. She refuses to acknowledge that she is extremely privileged and that her privilege has given her an enormous head start in life. I've noticed that its always people who come from old money that say things like "it's all about your mindset, there are no limits." and "you're just not confident enough, just make it happen." They have no concept that some of us come from poor backgrounds and didn't always have a leg up or the opportunity to just go and do exactly what we wanted. Some of us had no choice but to work a menial day job to pay bills and eat because no one else was there to hand us rescue money when our "Plan A.2" or whatever fell through. Of course, we all have the opportunity to become successful through hard work, but privileged people like Lily who have never really lived in the world the rest of us live in making it sound so simple and easy. That's dangerous, as it can seriously harm someone's self-confidence if they are struggling and not able to achieve their goals and dreams right away. They will believe that something must be wrong with them, and maybe they just don't deserve happiness if they are stills struggling when its meant to be so easy. She totally brushes over struggles and hard work and makes it seem like everyone can wake up in the morning and just decide to be rich and successful. It ain't always like that. Otherwise, poverty would not exist.

      A lot of Indian migrants to Canada are economically privileged because of Canada's immigration system that brings in a lot of Indian professionals like doctors and such. The sad part is it divides the immigrant community in our country into the privileged elite immigrants and the poorer immigrants. Lily grew up in Scarborough so I'm sure she saw poverty, but a lot of people of privilege seem to lack empathy because their parents never instilled it in them.

No one gives me free house, fully covered expenses and I just dream about free health care, without a job, and if I don't have my parents I live in the streets by now, and my government not support me at all, because I don't come from the minorities. Please, if you come my country you won't see the problem, you see those people are poor, because dress like that, bargaining on the streets and you will call us bad persons. So please if you come here see don't judge us without seeing the whole picture and don't judge what you see on the surface, its not the real issue.

    The way he talked to Jon in season one is not the way he spoke to Cersei or Joffrey or even Jaime, who he was arguably closest with. The lesson being - Know who it is safe to show certain parts of yourself to. Because it will never be everything with everyone.

    While there is equal opportunity on TH-cam, could there be a discrepancy in women getting popular vs men getting popular due to potential audiences having a subconscious bias? As we all are raised in a misogynistic society, we all internalize these feelings. Women-run channels may appeal only to women whereas man-run channels may appeal to both men and women, as men are seen as the default human being and "neutral" whereas women arent.
    It's the same reason so many book and movie protagonists aimed at audiences of both sexes are male and female protagonists are seen mostly in books aimed at women and girls.

    I recenty bought Gabbie's book to analyze it and try and make some of her poetry better, rewrite it and make it kind of good as I write my own poetry myself. I know that this video is about Lily but I just wanted to say this. I took a break from poetry for a while because my last English class just kind of ruined it for me as it was really surface level and the teacher only accepted the answer that she believed the poem was about. I loved her as a person, but I would always find other ways that the poem could be analyzed and I always found other things that it could mean. I would feel extremely stupid when my answer "wasn't right". A little into the year I just stopped writing my poetry completely as I felt that it wasn't good. That it wasn't worthwhile and that I wasn't making the right connections with my own poetry. I feared that people would get the wrong message from it. After watching your first Gabbie book review and seeing your love for poetry and just the way you view the poems that you displayed. I starting writing again that night. I disagree that everyone starts out with equal opportunity on youtube. Ofcourse people with money to access editing software, higher quality cameras, mics, lighting etc, people with a background in film production or another related industry, people who use a language spoken by a large population, people who know much larger youtubers personally to do collabs, and people who will talk about popular subjects or are very good at understanding trends on youtube- these people undoubtedly start with advantages. If you happen to have a really great on camera presence and catch a lucky wave on the algorithm, sure you might have a chance, and definitely some youtubers did just get a lucky start, but the odds are much slimmer, not equal.

    One thing many people seem to miss about the wage gap is that it's about what kind of work we value as well as just whether and how women are paid differently.
    We have this expectation that if you work harder, your salary will reflect how hard you work, but that's not how it is. Take my parents as an example: my dad is an engineer and my mom a kindergarten teacher. He's paid far more than her, but does he work harder? In my opinion, no. Her work is far more physically strenuous and takes far more emotional and social intelligence. And it is far more socially valuable than his work.
    Sure, his work requires more technical knowledge, but why should a short term investment mean you get a far better pay throughout the entire rest of your life - especially in a country which highly subsidizes students? After all, we need kindergarten teachers and primary/middle school teachers and nurses like we do few other professions, but these professions aren't valued as they should be.
    Part of the reason why is historical sexism - the inheritance of the fact that women dominated professions started out with low pay because it at the time was legal to pay women less - Leading to the solidification of the idea that these professions are unprestigious and less worth than other professions.
    We have to question why we value the professions we do, and ask whether it has to be that way.
    Another problem is, as you mentioned briefly, that women are passed over for promotions and raises where a man would likely advance faster. Whether that is because of sexism; gendered perceptions about leadership and about work ethic, unconsciously seeing women more uncharitably than men, male bosses creating social ties to men easier than to women and so giving men the benefit of cronyism over women, perceptions about how women are going to leave the job soon anyway because they're going to want kids, that mothers' work will suffer because of their children or that men need the raise or promotion more because they (unlike women) are going to be a "provider for their family". Or whether is is up to "personal choice" or women underselling themselves I guess is in the eye of the beholder, but neither personal choices or how we value ourselves and our work exists disconnected from our society and the stories we tell ourselves about women and men and what is deserving of being valued.
    A third problem is that women still do most of the unpaid work in the home which facilitates men's work - cleaning, cooking, caring for the children. This has changed some for the better, and hopefully will continue to change, but it still happens women are expected to go straight from a full time job to take on the majority of the burden of work in the home

    • @Domee894
      @Domee894 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      You're absolutely right. I'm annoyed when people justify women being paid less because they become mothers. Why don't men help them more? It's the society that tells them to be mothers and wives and do the full-time job at the same time for lesser pay. This is atrocious.

    Cristine from SimplyNailogical is a _much_ better influence on young people than Lilly Singh will ever be. The thing I appreciate most about her advice is that it's all incredibly practical and realistic. Meanwhile, to hear Lilly speak, you'd assume she was a preteen from 2011. Some people can become wildly successful but still stay grounded. Lilly Singh is not one.
    The most disappointing thing in all of this is that her fanbase is mostly under 13 (because very few people above that age would find a single thing in her entire backlog of content to laugh at). The fact that she's giving life advice like "put all your eggs in one basket" to children is far, far more disturbing than any sexually suggestive or obscene content she could have included.

    Lilly Singh reminds me of Tahani Al Jamil. Tahani is a character in a comedy. and for the most part, her personality is a joke. So why are Lilly and Tahani basically the same person?
    Every other sentence contains a name drop. Everything they say and do is a gift to you (you're welcome). If you don't like them, you must be a bad person, because they're perfect. It's ridiculous.
    Its funny and somewhat endearing for Tahani because she is just a character, but we also know about her past and motivations. But Lilly, the _real actual person_ is not endearing at all. She's rude and defensive and unfunny, and we never hear anything about her past or motivations beyond, "I have asian parents and Im brown so life is hard for me" and some bullshit about wanting to be "a light in the world".
    Anywho, I just couldnt help comparing the two because of the crazy namedropping.

    I think what’s more inspiring is that you can do more than one thing in your life. I just started college and I had a professor who took like 10 years to get his bachelors/masters, worked in marketing for like 30 years, retired and then decided to get a PhD and be a professor. Do the money making stuff first then become an old rich white man for a hobby (but seriously this guy made me realize that I can pick up a new skill/career if I want)

    I agree with most of what you’re saying but I don’t think you should totally dismiss the possibility of discrimination in TH-cam revenue. The issue is obviously more complicated than someone looking at a creator and deciding to pay them less because of their race or gender. However, “deep” algorithms like TH-cam’s monetization often reproduce the prejudices of the society that they are trained to learn from. A good example of a pattern of discrimination is LGBT related content consistently being demonetized even when it conforms to advertiser friendly guidelines. An excellent channel I follow from an OB/GYN doctor that makes informative videos about women’s health also struggles with demonetization. Even more subtly, if people’s unconscious (or conscious) biases make them less likely to click on videos from a black creator, that person’s videos will be less promoted and seen by fewer people. I don’t know whether any of these factors relate to Lilly’s complaint but you do seem to imply that TH-cam income has nothing to do with race, gender, etc and I don’t think that’s the case.

But for exemple, that list has someone from LGTB community (i dont remember his name, but is from beauty community). KSI i think was also there, and he is black. Theres also a kid in the middle or Markpillier who is asian. Like she is only talking about women. Before she was in the list, but she start making different videos and lost her audience. The same for Miranda Sings (who start making a show) Liza Koshy (i think thats her name) start doing other things too; etc. The women who were always in top10 creators on youtube all of them modify their content or start doing TV things, while the man stay with the same content. Its actually quite interesting to analyze that. But in Lily case, its different. She was literally the only youtube to have a contract with them to make videos with celebs. She was promote like nobody else by the platform itself. How can she talk about descrimination, when she was not even the person who pulled more views or subscribers, but still youtube decide to helper anyway?

It was thanks to her marriage to Khal Drogo she grew to become a strong individual. She wrote Daenerys is a completely different light by making her look like a super woman playing a weak girl hiding a behemot ready to attack at the perfect time. The same goes for the show. That whole beginning about the pay gap rubs me the wrong way. In the post you put on screen, Lilly says (paraphrasing), "Two years ago there were two women on this list, then there was just me, now there are none." She's pointing out the fact that, of the top earners on TH-cam, *all* of them were men. Judging by that tweet alone, she's speaking to something more than just herself and what she earns, but rather to a growing pay gap between male and female/non-binary TH-camrs that seems to be mirroring other industries.
    Several of your comments about the issue seem willfully ignorant and smack of straw manning. "No one is saying 'look at these two people, we're going to pay the one with a vagina less money.' That's not how it works." That's not how the gender pay gap is explained. The problems are systemic. The facts that women don't take as much initiative for raises, that hiring managers tend to see men as being more capable for certain jobs, that sexism and sexual harassment are still all too common in the workplace, that there is little to zero family leave and support that could allow moms to remain competitive in the workplace (in the US), etc, are all part of the system and the history of working women. Saying that "when we get down to the specifics, the gap is much less job by job or based on age," very often feels/is unhelpful. At least for me, if there's a significant gap at all, it's definitely a problem that should be called out and fixed. The reasons for it are varied and many precisely *because* it is systemic.
    Besides all that, you spend several minutes on ad hominem attacks before going into any criticism of the book, tainting your audience's view of the author and her work from the get-go. For someone who loves reading, I feels as though you haven't taken the time to 1) consider how your words will affect what you are presenting, and 2) really think about where Lilly was coming from (unless there's more comments of hers that you didn't show us).
    I don't want to be mean. It's just that you're obviously very intelligent and insightful when it comes to literature. Unfortunately it feels like outside of reading, in this one instance at least (especially with that weird SJW comment), you allow your various privileges (being white, young, attractive, British, and well-educated) to get in the way of being insightful in life in general. I actually would very much like to see that paper you wrote.

    whilst everyone does have the same rules for getting paid on youtube, it is interesting to note that female comedians on youtube are much less popular than male comedians. this is primarily due to issues in society wherein men = comedians and less so with an enforced pay gap
    so i understand why it can be annoying for lilly despite her wages to feel that she isn’t treated on par with other male comedians on youtube

    • @Arikel
      @Arikel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      And not just men = comedians, which is a true issue. In society we're used to men = represent everybody and women = represent just women, so women watch male youtubers waaaaay more than men watch female youtubers and that also increases the disparity. Even in female dominated categories, the most youtubers with more subscribers are still men, like James Charles and the beauty community. So, when it comes to male dominated communities, like gaming, atheism or comedy, women will have it way harder, if not impossible, to be at the top (plus being more harshly criticized and judged than some of their peers) and to see the few ones up there disappear must be incredibly frustrating.

    • @saffysaffyrocks
      @saffysaffyrocks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      And personally, this is just my opinion: It doesn't really matter if a woman is getting paid $800 per month or $14,000 dollars per month. • @tunessystem787
    @tunessystem787 4 ปีที่แล้ว +83

    The wage gap is less “women make less than men” and more “traditionally female-dominated fields pay less that traditionally male-dominated fields”. Whether or not that started out due to sexism, these days it is less sexism and more a matter of societal value in general. For example, why does an auto mechanic make more money than an elderly care nurse? Both jobs can be physically exhausting, both jobs require specific knowledge, auto parts are not inherently more expensive to make than medical equipment, and elderly care also comes with a heavy emotional toll that an auto mechanic doesn’t have to worry about. So do we just value the care given to our cars more than the care given to our grandparents? If people were viewing it as a sexist thing, then all male elderly care workers would make more than female ones. People aren’t thinking about it in a sexist way, we just aren’t thinking about it at all. We should reevaluate which aspects of a job deserve how much value and what different jobs are ultimately worth, not sit around shouting “wage gap!” and “sexism!”. The ultimate goal should be making pay match the job, not making sure that “female” jobs get paid equally to “male” jobs. That’s extremely shallow and completely misses the point. It’s a feminist issue because it is a problem that affects women more than men, but the current reason that the problem exists is not related to sexism, so calling it out as sexist is not the solution - we need to look deeper than that.
    Also, it seems like Lilly is trying to excite her readers the same way she would excite youtube viewers. But different forms of media require different styles of presentation. This just ends up feeling very clashy.

      Hey Tunes System, thanks for writing all of that. I 100% agree. I never stopped to think about that before. It makes way more sense to readjust the pay for the job. I would imagine that would be difficult though, because of supply and demand, how much schooling for each field costs, all that jazz. It seems like a lot of job/payment problems go back to how school and university/college is structured.

    I think Lily may have had some ground to stand on in regards to her “youtube has a pay gap” claim if it had been specifically in regards to view inequality? Meaning there are probably levels of success in specific youtube communities that could be correlated to gender, like how the youtube atheist community is more visibly male dominated. However, there’s still a lot of nuance to the reasons behind viewership gaps in specific communities. Even if that was Lily’s point, that’s not a case of youtube being sexist so much as like... instances of unconscious gender (or racial) bias when searching for assumed reliable speakers on certain topics. That’s a general life issue, I’d say.
    But her complaints are so, so much worse when this book is the backdrop. That utter entitlement of telling people to put all their eggs in one basket when she had a safety net for her failure which was constructed by her parents... wow. And then all that bragging. Not a good look.
    I look forward to your Lele Pons video. That book is just the peak of dissonance so I’m eager to hear your thoughts

      Yes. Mental health should be your top priority. Remember, when someone dies of exhaustion from school, their family's the one who suffers the the loss. School can easily replace you with new students.

    The thing about being a boss is that some people will be employees. And it's so entitled for people who have succeeded to think that if only everyone tried as hard as them then they would do just as well, to think that they didn't succeed off the backs of others who helped them along the way.

    May I suggest you to review "Useless Magic" by Florence Welch? It seems to be the drafts of many songs and poems she wrote.
    But if you want to do it, a good companion to this are her songs.❤️

    My friends and I loved watching Lilly's videos when I was in sixth grade (about 11-12 years old, I'm 18 now) and we found her hilarious, but as I got older I quickly grew out of her jokes and content by the time I was like 14ish. Which I think honestly says a lot about her content and the age range of people that find her funny. I have many fond memories of laughing at Lilly's videos with my friends that I still cherish and yet I just cringe so hard at pretty much all of her content now which is sad, especially with the late night stuff.
    (Also Kyra is the cutest pup ever oh my gosh I could watch her forever)

    I used to watch Lily many years ago back when she didn’t know any celebs and didn’t have such an ego. She was famous on YT but not outside of it and some of her videos were funny to me. Especially the ones about Crushes or her parents back when she mostly made fun of herself to combat her depression.
    But then she started to get more and more famous and got more recognition which I celebrated and was very happy about but I slowly stopped relating to her content and I stopped watching her.
    The next thing I know she’s making weird tweets about sexism and so on and I can’t even recognize her from before... 😞

    I found Lilly when I was around 11 or 12, and I idolized her. Like, at least 90 minutes a day were probably spent watching her videos. I was a really lonely kid and I was bullied a lot, and though I didn't know it at the time, I was in a really serious depression with several other mental health problems that I was unaware of. I was psyched when I heard that she was coming out with a book, and I got it as soon as I could. I recently found it again and skimmed it.
    I finally realized that that book fucked me up for years. I heavily internalized a lot of the advice, because I wasn't getting that sort of life advice from anyone else. I took everything in there as gospel. The overall message of the book that I got was that mental health issues are your fault. If you're sad, it's your responsibility to work hard until you're happy. Therapy isn't helpful, and you shouldn't rely on friends or family because they could leave or you'll get clingy and they'll hate you. If you aren't successful, it's because you didn't work hard enough. If you feel that there's a challenge you can't overcome, then you're just too weak.
    Another thing- the book was targeted at kids, but the advice was targeted at adults. So all that stuff about becoming successful, child me was like "yo, I don't have a media empire, I suck." It knocked my self-confidence to the ground. And for all she says about talking about mental health, implying that the best way to fix your mental health problems is to decide to not be sad anymore wasn't great advice for me. It caused me to hide my emotions and pretend to be fine until I broke down. Even once my family put me in therapy, it caused me to avoid talking to the therapist about my actual problems and just stay surface-level. I never got too close to friends because I was convinced that it was weak to lean on people. I also got really hyper-independent and detached from my family, because I was convinced I'd never be happy if I "needed" them (Again, I was 11). I wonder what awful shit still lurks in my psyche from that book.
    I've seen some of her more recent stuff- her opinions have changed. She's changed her views of mental health, she talks about privilege and acknowledges her own, she's a lot less not-like-other-girlsy, etc. But she's never apologized for or acknowledged the harm her book caused, and she's still making money off of the sales.
    Parents, if you see your kids with that book, throw it into a fire. Sincerely, a fucked up kid.

    I still find her TH-cam channel content to be quite entertaining. But her late night program is, shall we say, at best a work in progress. Fame in the TH-cam space does not automatically translate well on to network television. And a Lily Singh's late night program is very indicative of this. still, as a fellow Torontonian, it's hard not to want all the best for her despite the unpalatable nature of her identity politics related flag-waving.

    This whole book reminds me of when my youth pastor would attempt to hype us up by comparing going to heaven as a "high better than coke" even though they were a suburban white woman named Kelly who has never been within a mile of weed. Just an adult trying to make the kids think they they act just how they think they think we behave.
