  • Today we're taking an in-depth look at Lele Pons' terrible book: #SurvivingHighschool : Do it For The Vine: A Novel - it's sadly just as bad and unfunny as her TH-cam videos.

Fanfiction takes skill though. Unless you're writing really off the rails AUs you have make your story fit with the personality traits of established characters. They have to be recognizable to the fandom and most of the time people looking for fanfictions are the most loyal and let's face it nit-picky fans. Sometimes you have to be incredibly intimate with plot details and the world building. What I am getting at here is that fanfiction takes research and effort. I dont know what the fuck LeLe Pons was writing but even the worst fanfiction would be better.

To be fair about the bra thing, a lot of girls do "have to" wear them. A lot of schools mark girls for dress code violations for not wearing bras or for not wearing them "the right way". I was 12 when I was pulled out of gym class and told I couldn't come back until I was wearing a bra. My mom had to take off work and go buy me training bras that day and I remember hating them so much and hating that I was the only girl who had to wear one. It felt so humiliating to be singled out like that and be basically shamed for my natural body. I'm definitely not alone in this. It's very common that girls are singled out for things like this in schools and body-shamed for the way they naturally are. And, what's worse is that it's sold to us as "distracting the boys" and "attracting the wrong kind of attention", like it's our fault. I basically just wore loose men's t-shirts and sweatpants all through junior high and most of high school because I got sick of people commenting on my body for one reason or another. It's pretty fucked that girls have to go through these kinds of things.

For a 14 year old girl with no social media accounts and no cell phone, saying "heart-eyes emoji" as a means to express yourself is especially bizarre 🤔
Edit because I'm not sure anyone understood what I meant lol:
I am not 14, I am 25. I'm saying in the book Lele claims that the character (or, her younger self I guess) is a 14 year old girl with no social media accounts and no cell phone. So I'm not saying "from my perspective as a 14 year old girl with no social media or cell phone I think what she said is weird," what I'm saying is that since the character has no social media and no cell phone, why would she even think of heart-eyes emojis as a way to express herself since she obviously never uses emojis.
Anyway, I'm not saying that the people commenting on this understood my comment wrong, I just wanted to clarify just in case lol

This legit reads like if a Baby Boomer was given the task to write a novel from the point of view of a Gen-Z'er. Seriously, how can someone only a few years out of teenagerhood write in such a cringily un-real-life-teen-like manner? It's like she peaked in some alternate-reality high school that's hilariously out of touch with the real world, and now she's teleported here to talk about it while pretending to still be 17. Her novel persona is so unlikable, and ironically stereotypical for trying to portray herself as a "not like other girls" type, not to mention a Mary Sue to the extreme. She's _so_ awkward and bullied, and yet a hot foreign guy becomes her friend and takes off his shirt in front of her on the first day of meeting him. She brags about herself in one breath and then acts like her whole life is so hard in the next. Plus, as someone who has longer hair than she likely has, it is really not that hard to take care of properly. Just shampoo and condition regularly, and be gentle in brushing it. It takes me like two minutes tops to brush all my hair out, even when wet, if I just go slowly and methodically through it. I've never heard of Lele Pons before now but she sounds like a total joke if this book is anything to go by.

Honestly I'm wondering if we're witnessing the rise (and fall) of psycopathic & narcissistic youtube writers. I can see a lot of similarity both in the writing style and structures of Lele's and Greg's (onision) books.
    - both seem to have quite minimal descriptions of the environment, like they don't seem to have the motivation to let reader into the scene, or they don't realize their writing will look uninteresting without description.
    - extreme lack of sympathy and empathy towards most if any characters by the main character. Only sexual or other beneficial reasons make the main character to "care" about another character, but not really _care_ about them for other than these superficial reasons.
    - the main character seems very narcissistic, can't take critique, also quite a mary sue. Even the "weaknesses" of the main character are somehow cool. There's also heavy implication the main character is the writer (the way they see themselves).
    - everyone and everything is against the main character for no apparent reason - could reflect their lack of ability to reflect their own disrespectful/violent behavior, thus they just see the part when everyone else is disrespectful/violent towards them, for "no reason".
    - the story overall seems a bit childish and emotionally immature. Maybe the reason they feel it more natural to write about teenage life instead of life closer to their actual age?
    - the writer themselves seem to have no doubt about the book being good (narcissist trait), hence the lack of proofreading and/or second opinions before publishing, so the book will look unfinished, incoherent and raw. If it's not appreciated, the fault is on the readers ;)

Granted maybe not her very first ones, but if she was such a “loser” with “no friends,” how does she have many people filming her and acting w her? If she was bullied, I doubt she would even go up to ppl and ask them to film her, and if she did, I doubt they’d say yes since they were bullies. I’m just so confused, but I haven’t seen many of her very very early vines so idk for sure, I remember watching her on vine when she was still in HS tho, and they contained a lot of ppl. Not exactly opinions I think highly of anyway). If Lele's true experience in high school was like what she describes, I truly pity her, but I highly, highly doubt she is telling any form of truth.

    • @Nadia-dn3xw
      @Nadia-dn3xw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

“eh” has a softer sound than “ey” which is more anuncianted. this could also be an accent thing. i’m from michigan, near detroit and canada, and there’s definitely a subtle but still noticeable difference between the two pronunciations.

I'd put a letter in front to be able to tell the difference.
      Hay or heh.
      May or meh.
      Lei or leg.
(Not the same spellings with "ey" or "eh", but they sound the same.)
"Ey" sounds like the long "a", while "eh" sounds like the short "e", at least where I live (Texas).

Here in the UK 50 years ago. Mrs Thomas, head school cook told at 62 she has to retire. A bunch of us kids were upset seeing her crying. We 8 year olds, were told Mrs T was too old, to by our headmaster.
That's it ! I'm trying now thinking now how we barged into the headmaster's office and held him hostage until the decision was reversed.
In truth parents were told and Mrs T was given a other 6 months and an article in the local paper about her pride in feeding us kids since the forties when she started .
