Agreed, Trisha's feels more raw because she seems less concerned with catering to an audience and is unapologetically herself (trolling/real emotion. Gabbie's seems so polished, her style doesn't feel her own. It's empty observations that reek of a dishonest cash grab.

I feel like this type of poetry should have its own genre. Like, I recognize that technically it isn’t skillful or good, but it still incites the same feeling of relatability as skillful and good poems that I like. It’s like “camp poetry” maybe. Not really beautiful or tasteful or skilled, but you feel what the writer feels and you wouldn’t quite feel it if it were just prose.

And I actually think that if it was polished up it might lose something. You know that era from 2012-2015 when every youtuber was coming out with an autobiography or advice book of some sort? I think the same thing is happening with poetry. And I am simultaneously annoyed and entertained.
I think it's because earlier, TH-camrs were always trying to be the "older sister/brother" or "best friend" and now they're self-concious bc everybody thinks they're not working hard, so they want to be taken seriously and seen as "real artists".

Trisha’s WHOLE career has been “wait, is this..... bad or good?” “Is she serious?” “Is this intentional?” It makes sense her poetry would reflect that.
She is thought provoking as in her poetry still evokes emotion, I think if it were to be polished it would lose its emotional nature so it’s not like the work of Emily Dickinson or E.A. Poe but it’s unpolished which could add to the atmosphere of her poetry.
i am a creative writing major and i had a professor tell me, "if it made you feel anything, no matter what the feeling, could be negative, then it did its job. that's art. art is meant to draw feeling out of you." true, i don't think she did this seriously. just from the first poem, i think it's trolling. but who knows honestly?
I really try to write my poetry by this rule, it has to make the reader feel something. I'm slso considering doing creative writing in uni, not sure what it's about as a course though.
@@possummagic1341 I don't know how every college is, but my creative writing course went over 3 styles of writing. Fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. I got pushed out my comfort zone for sure. But my school also wants us knowledgeable in literature and language. So it's more than just writing. Though again, i'm not sure how every other school is.
In her first poem, you pointed out the bit about religion and using the capital H in 'His' and 'Him' to refer to God. I know Trisha isn't a great poet and I don't mean to defend her but the way you explained it, I interpreted 'he' in the opening sentence to refer to her ex boyfriend. Like you said, she's done idolizing him, but 'He's going to do this to me?' I thought she did 'talk to God' in that sentence. Like the "Why me, God?". But maybe I'm overthinking it.
I thought perhaps the shift between the two could represent the back and forth nature of being done with someone, then wanting them again. Damning them in your mind in one thought but worshipping them again in the next.
i think shes smart and that assuming she doesnt know a lot about the technicals of poetry (and so being unsure if shes using some of those subtle tricks) doesnt take away from how smart she is. being smart doesnt mean youre good at poetry lol

I don't think Rupi considers herself at the levels of classic poets or claims to be, not to mention the problem with her poetry in the critiques is that it's too short and doesn't have that structure of classic poems (line stanza breaks, different rhyming schemes, etc.) - all of which she can't do bc the poem is litterally to short. Rachel (and other insta poet critics like her) has a hard time accepting that there's just a different style of poetry that exists nowadays and people are trying to convult it into something that it's not. consistently in the critiques I'm seeing is that this insta poetry is just not done in the way that published, literary poems are done (which is a more abstracts and technical take on poetry) and people are clinging onto it so much hence why negative reviews. Many of these insta poets I don''t think they take themselves as seriously or claim to be as good as professionals/on a professional level. I'm not even sure if Gabby Hanna considers herself a poetic genius - but her reactions can be understandable if you've ever been a writer yourself where you've poured hours into your work and where what was an improvement for you was still not good enough for others; the thought realizing that you'll never be better than mediocre (which makes me question if people with that skill level means aren't allowed to publish books and their works bc it feels undeserving or as a cash grab? Like are we gate-keeping poetry rn?). People are invested in their creations that's why it hurts so much to receive bad reviews.
I feel like I actually like Trisha’s poetry. I don’t know nearly as much about poetry as Rachel does, but I think Trisha’s stuff, at least some of it, is good, technically speaking. She uses imagery, metaphors, hyperboles. There’s not really a lot of method or revision to her poetry, but I kind of like that. She almost just word-vomits in a free verse style. It’s raw. Rachel’s issue with Gabbie’s poetry was that there were no layers to it, and it was very face value. In contrast, Trisha’s has Rachel diving in for deeper meaning. I don’t know, I think it’s good poetry technically speaking. One thing for sure is that Trisha’s poetry is way better than Gabbie’s! Some of Gabbie’s poems were half-assed, and all the rest were so try-hard.

6:39 I think she’s saying it’s been six months since her last real relationship, but only six minutes since she was last intimate with someone. Which fits with the theme in the poem of “I’d rather be a whore than be in love”.
She has said in multiple videos that she wrote this while she was struggling with a drug problem. That is probably why they seem like she is trying to make them bad.

maybe when she said he with a capital H she actually meant God, it makes sense. that's why it wasn't consistent. she maybe felt like even God has betrayed her "He's going to do this to me?". it would be an interesting choice, very subtle. also, when she said " It's been six months since my last, but only \\ six hours since my last" she clearly meant that it's been months since she had something meaningful, a real "last", but only hours since she a physical relationship, an idea which fits perfectly with the other verses. In the chat you asked us viewers about if art has to be intentional. Here is my view on it. Art doesn't have to be intentional. You could put down a brush stroke on a canvas you did not plan on adding to your painting. You could see it as a mistake and try to fix it, or take a step back and see it as something that is a part of the journey of creating the art and letting it stay. I once heard someone say: 'It's not about fixing the mistakes you make while creating art, but giving those mistakes meaning and making it about so much more than failure.' I think that counts for life as well. Making those unintentional choices makes creating art more fun. If you would plan everything and make it intentional it would take the beauty, realness and humanity of art away. That's the part I personally like most about it, the flaws, the realness and beauty that humanity brings to the world.
My best artworks are never intentional. Studio art classes messed with my head because every line, colour and material you used had to be tied to a meaning. I always used to just sit there like '....But why can't I just draw something i think is pretty why does it have to have months and months of thinking of meanings and analysing other artworks for ideas before we can even start?' I can most definitely say that I got away with not doing any of that by giving everything meanings afterwards and be like 'Oh I meant for that to happen because im 14 and this is deep' LOL
On this note, my favorite piece I've ever painted is a 5 panel scene. In one corner a tiny piece of hair got on my canvas. My spouse saw it and thought it was an intentional stylized R hidden in the picture. I loved that idea so much I've since adopted the symbol in my new works. Art is a beautiful amalgamation of mistakes that create a new understanding

The second “He” with the capitalization may actually be her referencing God. When people are hurt they may ask God “why me” or “why are you doing this to me.” She could be questioning why God has let this hurt happen?
I hated poetry at school with such a passion, but the way you read and dissect these poems makes this come alive for me. I can actually see and understand my own reactions to them. I love how you compare the poem you're analyzing to one about a similar topic by someone else because it helps me see what you mean when you talk about depth and layers, imagery, pace, etc. Really enjoying this series and I hope you do many more Trisha poems in the future!
I like poetry and it’s my strongest form of writing (I think) but god poetry in school sucks. I had an assignment for a sonnet once and after I finished it and took it to the teacher he made me re write it because it wasn’t about love. Wtf? My mom is an actual poet and she called bullshit too lol
Just Ryan - my reasoning is: from my view she has never shown herself to be artistic in really any form. She wrote songs but they were surface deep and mostly satire, other than that the art of poetry seems out of her realm.

I clicked this video thinking "Sweet! A poetry book just as bad as Gabbie Hanna's!" but I'm honestly surprised with Trisha's writing. It's nothing amazing but I mean, I actually got some feelings while reading them? It really seems like Trisha actually put in effort to her book. Weird as they are, I do think there's a lot of genuine emotions put in the poems. Gabbie on the other hand is just barfing words on paper thinking they'll be edgy and artistic.

After having watched the majority of Trisha's videos, I personally think that she's smarter than a lot of people think. She has created this overdramatic, attention-seeking, crazy character that successfully brings her attention and views, and she has not really changed through the years... You're completely right about the fact that her content is a mix the Real Trisha, her real thoughts and feelings, and her "trolling" vids. But what I love about her at the end of the day, is that she keeps doing what she loves and tries new things she finds exciting, such as her music vids (despite the negative feedback she may receive), her new podcast channel, her adult content... She has flaws and I disagree with a lot of think she has said in the past, but after following her for a long time, it becomes easy to know when she's not really herself, when she's the troll everyone hates and reacts to. I just hope she will realise one day she doesn't need to use her "persona" to attract attention and the love she really seem to crave for! (Sorry my English is bad and this is way too long.....)
Gloria Folidis Your english is good! Also, while I myself don’t really like her and enjoy her content, I do also think that she isn’t really herself in her videos. Sometimes it’s because it’s easy to just brush off bad actions with “It was a joke!”. Other times, I think she’s afraid of people not liking her true self. If she isn’t taken seriously, at least she won’t get her true self insulted?
Like others have said your English is good. I agree for the most part. I just think when Trisha uses real issues people face for her trolling is when it becomes not okay (the trans incident and the DID incident is what I mean.)
I'm of the belief that any poetry written in a moment of true pain and anguish is good on a basic level. Crafting poetry from words to be clever and enjoyable is one art form, but spewing your heart out in short form is another kind of art entirely, if that makes sense. It's kinda garbage, but like you said, it's raw and real, trite rhymes and hyperbole included. It makes us feel and connect with one another and that's what art is all about, even when it took fifteen minutes instead of fifteen hours/days/weeks/years. Idk, I'm a big fan of poetry-as-therapy and while I don't think Trisha would win any awards for this, I do commend her for expressing herself and being open and honest about her feelings. Does that make sense? I'm having trouble articulating how I feel about this lmao. I deff agree that Gabbie is slightly better technically but Trisha has her beat in the emotional department, hands down. TL;DR: I agree with everything you said and these videos are really great :)
The main difference between gabbie and trisha, for me, is that Gabbie is very performative, "look how creative and artistic and deep I am," whereas Trisha is just straight up distraught and goin through it. There's so much more emotion.

i’d recommend the book how to read literature like a professor! it mentions a lot of common allusions in books including biblical ones, and imo it’s applicable to almost all media
yes I agree the psalms, proverbs, and luke I feel are very good for basic biblical metaphors and references! psalms and proverbs are pieces of art while luke contains actual words from the Christian God (it's a biography of Jesus)

I think the inconsistency with the uncapitalized 'he' VS. the capitalized "He" is actually because she's differentiating between her ex-lover and God. She's asking why God would do this to her. Why he would set her up with someone who hurt her.

In my opinion, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, especially if expressing those emotions creatively helps you get through them - I know for me, personally, writing through the darker emotions saved my life many times. It's an incredibly healthy coping mechanism and there's no shame in it. I'd be interested in reading your poetry, I'd probably find it very relatable and I'm sure there are plenty of others out there who would too. Keep writing and hang in there, okay? 💜
I found an old Instagram when I was 15 where I posted poetry. I don’t write anymore (I’m 20 now) but I wrote way better stuff then than I ever could now.
About your question on what art is: to me this is like comparing rembrandt to pollock. Rembrandt could spend years revising and redoing parts of a painting to make it look as technically perfect as possible, while in the process making it void of emotion, whereas pollock flings paint at a canvas for a day, and evokes complete emotion in a viewer. It all depends on your definition of art. To me, pollock holds more artistic merit because even though he lacks technical skill, he makes you feel sonething
🤔 Interesting, because then what would you call Rembrandts art ? Rembrandts work was meant to provoke emotion and awe on the spectators through the representation of the world as we see it. Also, the concept of representing emotion in art (idk much abt literature so idk if its the same) is so recent, and it is a response to the changes of the world, so I understand the idea of giving merit to emotion more than accurate representation.
@@thepinatafightdani of course rembrandt was something new and awe inspiring at the time, and he definitely has an audience today, but he was the first person who came to mind when I thought of technical ability over emotional appeal, as most of his paintings are stark representations of reality with dull colour schemes and not much style, meant to showcase real settings and his skill. The question you raised about art and our appreciation of it was an interesting one. I remember my English teacher once telling me that art is not owned by the artist. Even if you interpret a poem in an entirely different way to how the poet intended or pick apart depth when what they wrote was shallow it doesn’t matter because the beauty comes from the interpretation of it. I always struggled with this because I thought it wasn’t fair that some people just got ‘lucky’ but now I’m older I think I’m beginning to agree.
I love these videos, your opinions are always really well thought out and intelligently formulated. It's clear that you are quite familiar with the genre, and it makes me want to read more poetry. I also really appreciate the fact that you try to look for the good parts as well as the bad parts when it comes to the work of Trisha and Gabbie. i am a creative writing major and i had a professor tell me, "if it made you feel anything, no matter what the feeling, could be negative, then it did its job. that's art. art is meant to draw feeling out of you." true, i don't think she did this seriously. just from the first poem, i think it's trolling. but who knows honestly?
I really try to write my poetry by this rule, it has to make the reader feel something. I'm slso considering doing creative writing in uni, not sure what it's about as a course though.

But my school also wants us knowledgeable in literature and language. So it's more than just writing. Though again, i'm not sure how every other school is.

In her first poem, you pointed out the bit about religion and using the capital H in 'His' and 'Him' to refer to God. I know Trisha isn't a great poet and I don't mean to defend her but the way you explained it, I interpreted 'he' in the opening sentence to refer to her ex boyfriend. Like you said, she's done idolizing him, but 'He's going to do this to me?' I thought she did 'talk to God' in that sentence. Like the "Why me, God?". But maybe I'm overthinking it.

That's the way I interpreted it too.
I thought perhaps the shift between the two could represent the back and forth nature of being done with someone, then wanting them again. Damning them in your mind in one thought but worshipping them again in the next.
This is what I read it as. God is letting her down instead of giving her someone who cares, she’s upset with the man but also with God.

I don't think Rupi considers herself at the levels of classic poets or claims to be, not to mention the problem with her poetry in the critiques is that it's too short and doesn't have that structure of classic poems (line stanza breaks, different rhyming schemes, etc.) - all of which she can't do bc the poem is litterally to short. Rachel (and other insta poet critics like her) has a hard time accepting that there's just a different style of poetry that exists nowadays and people are trying to convult it into something that it's not. consistently in the critiques I'm seeing is that this insta poetry is just not done in the way that published, literary poems are done (which is a more abstracts and technical take on poetry) and people are clinging onto it so much hence why negative reviews. Many of these insta poets I don''t think they take themselves as seriously or claim to be as good as professionals/on a professional level. I'm not even sure if Gabby Hanna considers herself a poetic genius - but her reactions can be understandable if you've ever been a writer yourself where you've poured hours into your work and where what was an improvement for you was still not good enough for others; the thought realizing that you'll never be better than mediocre (which makes me question if people with that skill level means aren't allowed to publish books and their works bc it feels undeserving or as a cash grab? Like are we gate-keeping poetry rn?). People are invested in their creations that's why it hurts so much to receive bad reviews.

I feel like I actually like Trisha’s poetry. I don’t know nearly as much about poetry as Rachel does, but I think Trisha’s stuff, at least some of it, is good, technically speaking. She uses imagery, metaphors, hyperboles. There’s not really a lot of method or revision to her poetry, but I kind of like that. She almost just word-vomits in a free verse style. It’s raw.
Rachel’s issue with Gabbie’s poetry was that there were no layers to it, and it was very face value. In contrast, Trisha’s has Rachel diving in for deeper meaning.
I don’t know, I think it’s good poetry technically speaking. One thing for sure is that Trisha’s poetry is way better than Gabbie’s!
Some of Gabbie’s poems were half-assed, and all the rest were so try-hard.

Which fits with the theme in the poem of “I’d rather be a whore than be in love”.
She has said in multiple videos that she wrote this while she was struggling with a drug problem. That is probably why they seem like she is trying to make them bad.

In the chat you asked us viewers about if art has to be intentional. Here is my view on it. Art doesn't have to be intentional. You could put down a brush stroke on a canvas you did not plan on adding to your painting. You could see it as a mistake and try to fix it, or take a step back and see it as something that is a part of the journey of creating the art and letting it stay. I once heard someone say: 'It's not about fixing the mistakes you make while creating art, but giving those mistakes meaning and making it about so much more than failure.' I think that counts for life as well. Making those unintentional choices makes creating art more fun. If you would plan everything and make it intentional it would take the beauty, realness and humanity of art away. That's the part I personally like most about it, the flaws, the realness and beauty that humanity brings to the world.

My best artworks are never intentional. Studio art classes messed with my head because every line, colour and material you used had to be tied to a meaning. I always used to just sit there like '....But why can't I just draw something i think is pretty why does it have to have months and months of thinking of meanings and analysing other artworks for ideas before we can even start?' I can most definitely say that I got away with not doing any of that by giving everything meanings afterwards and be like 'Oh I meant for that to happen because im 14 and this is deep' LOL
On this note, my favorite piece I've ever painted is a 5 panel scene. In one corner a tiny piece of hair got on my canvas. My spouse saw it and thought it was an intentional stylized R hidden in the picture.
I loved that idea so much I've since adopted the symbol in my new works.

The second “He” with the capitalization may actually be her referencing God. When people are hurt they may ask God “why me” or “why are you doing this to me.” She could be questioning why God has let this hurt happen?

I hated poetry at school with such a passion, but the way you read and dissect these poems makes this come alive for me. I can actually see and understand my own reactions to them. I love how you compare the poem you're analyzing to one about a similar topic by someone else because it helps me see what you mean when you talk about depth and layers, imagery, pace, etc.

I clicked this video thinking "Sweet! A poetry book just as bad as Gabbie Hanna's!" but I'm honestly surprised with Trisha's writing. It's nothing amazing but I mean, I actually got some feelings while reading them? It really seems like Trisha actually put in effort to her book. Weird as they are, I do think there's a lot of genuine emotions put in the poems. Gabbie on the other hand is just barfing words on paper thinking they'll be edgy and artistic.

After having watched the majority of Trisha's videos, I personally think that she's smarter than a lot of people think. She has created this overdramatic, attention-seeking, crazy character that successfully brings her attention and views, and she has not really changed through the years... You're completely right about the fact that her content is a mix the Real Trisha, her real thoughts and feelings, and her "trolling" vids. But what I love about her at the end of the day, is that she keeps doing what she loves and tries new things she finds exciting, such as her music vids (despite the negative feedback she may receive), her new podcast channel, her adult content... She has flaws and I disagree with a lot of think she has said in the past, but after following her for a long time, it becomes easy to know when she's not really herself, when she's the troll everyone hates and reacts to.
I just hope she will realise one day she doesn't need to use her "persona" to attract attention and the love she really seem to crave for!

Sometimes it’s because it’s easy to just brush off bad actions with “It was a joke!”. Other times, I think she’s afraid of people not liking her true self. If she isn’t taken seriously, at least she won’t get her true self insulted?

Like others have said your English is good. I agree for the most part. I just think when Trisha uses real issues people face for her trolling is when it becomes not okay (the trans incident and the DID incident is what I mean.)
I'm of the belief that any poetry written in a moment of true pain and anguish is good on a basic level. Crafting poetry from words to be clever and enjoyable is one art form, but spewing your heart out in short form is another kind of art entirely, if that makes sense. It's kinda garbage, but like you said, it's raw and real, trite rhymes and hyperbole included. It makes us feel and connect with one another and that's what art is all about, even when it took fifteen minutes instead of fifteen hours/days/weeks/years.
Idk, I'm a big fan of poetry-as-therapy and while I don't think Trisha would win any awards for this, I do commend her for expressing herself and being open and honest about her feelings. Does that make sense? I'm having trouble articulating how I feel about this lmao.
I deff agree that Gabbie is slightly better technically but Trisha has her beat in the emotional department, hands down.

The main difference between gabbie and trisha, for me, is that Gabbie is very performative, "look how creative and artistic and deep I am," whereas Trisha is just straight up distraught and goin through it. There's so much more emotion.

yes I agree the psalms, proverbs, and luke I feel are very good for basic biblical metaphors and references! psalms and proverbs are pieces of art while luke contains actual words from the Christian God (it's a biography of Jesus)

In my opinion, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, especially if expressing those emotions creatively helps you get through them - I know for me, personally, writing through the darker emotions saved my life many times. It's an incredibly healthy coping mechanism and there's no shame in it. I'd be interested in reading your poetry, I'd probably find it very relatable and I'm sure there are plenty of others out there who would too. Keep writing and hang in there, okay? 💜

About your question on what art is: to me this is like comparing rembrandt to pollock. Rembrandt could spend years revising and redoing parts of a painting to make it look as technically perfect as possible, while in the process making it void of emotion, whereas pollock flings paint at a canvas for a day, and evokes complete emotion in a viewer. It all depends on your definition of art. To me, pollock holds more artistic merit because even though he lacks technical skill, he makes you feel sonething
🤔 Interesting, because then what would you call Rembrandts art ? Rembrandts work was meant to provoke emotion and awe on the spectators through the representation of the world as we see it. Also, the concept of representing emotion in art (idk much abt literature so idk if its the same) is so recent, and it is a response to the changes of the world, so I understand the idea of giving merit to emotion more than accurate representation.
@@thepinatafightdani of course rembrandt was something new and awe inspiring at the time, and he definitely has an audience today, but he was the first person who came to mind when I thought of technical ability over emotional appeal, as most of his paintings are stark representations of reality with dull colour schemes and not much style, meant to showcase real settings and his skill. This is just my opinion though, and I definitely understand the people who disagree

The question you raised about art and our appreciation of it was an interesting one. I remember my English teacher once telling me that art is not owned by the artist. Even if you interpret a poem in an entirely different way to how the poet intended or pick apart depth when what they wrote was shallow it doesn’t matter because the beauty comes from the interpretation of it. I always struggled with this because I thought it wasn’t fair that some people just got ‘lucky’ but now I’m older I think I’m beginning to agree.
