  • Sumi school students - Sumians - put up a great show in Sikkim!
More accurately, the tunes being played appear to be the Skye Boat Song and Auld Lang Sine - both Scottish songs!
A bagpiper band performs during the Sikkim winter carnival in India. Viewer Naren Limbu rightly points out that "They are Gurkhas. Listen to the tunes of bagpipes - they are all from Nepali songs. Salute to Gurkhas from all over the world and a celebration of 200 years of the Gurkhas."
Sikkim gears up for its biggest event, Sikkim Winter Carnival 2014. The Sikkim Winter Carnival 2014 was jointly organized by Sikkim Tourism and Civil Aviation and Government of Sikkim and was started on Dec 14 till Dec 19. The annual tourism festival is one of the most popular events in the north east circuit. Main highlights are the various cultural events, music shows, arts and crafts exhibitions, unlimited adventure activities like paragliding, mountain biking, rock climbing and much more.

I have been a piper in a competing Scottish pipe band for 30 years. I don't comprehend what they are doing. It's so very removed from my "world". Their primary focus seems to be on entertaining the audience which I do not think is a bad thing.

As a former pipe major of a grade 5 band and the son of a very good piper (and pipe sergeant) I love these Gurkha pipe bands. What a wonderful tradition. The chanters are out of tune but so what; it’s about the performance. Wonderful. These are probably Indian made pipes and drums. Lower pitched chanters as well as drums. I like the sound. More like the sounds of pipe bands from Scotland 50 years ago.. More like the old regimental and police pipe bands.

With due respect to their enthusiasm, what they need are decent courses for their Pipe and Drum Majors respectively - pipers and drummers too. The standard of pipe bands in the sub-continent are pathetic and bear little resemblance to the military origins first brought there by Scottish regiments of the British Army. The armed and police forces are poor examples too. The drill movements are exaggerated and where they have learned that bandsmen in pipe bands have to roll their shoulders when marching is open to conjecture; it is a ridiculous practice and appears more comic than military. They should have a look at how proper highland pipe bands sound and appear; there are enough examples on TH-cam.

    • @davidpaterson9905

@@porothashawarma2339 Don't take this personally, what pipe-bands in India (and the rest of the sub-continent) do is, quite frankly, rubbish. What is your claim to expertise? They have the capacity to learn to do it properly, what is being said here is constructive criticism. In the 50s and 60s military and police pipe-bands in India were quite different to the sub-standard performances one sees today. Indian people, like you, accept this (because you don't know any better) and resent any suggestion of improvement as if it was criticism and a matter of national pride. Ceremonial drill in India, in general, needs an overall review. Over-exaggerated drill-movements are not smart. If you don't know the difference, be happy - ridiculous but happy.
