  • Welcome back to Pop Dissected! Today, we're going to be discussing Lady Gaga's sixth studio record, "Chromatica"! In this video, we'll talk about why Lady Gaga decided to go back to her upbeat, electronic pop sound after the stripped back "Joanne".
We'll also dive into what made the record perform so well, it's hit singles "Stupid Love" and "Rain on Me", as well as what "Chromatica" represents for Lady Gaga as an artist, and how art can truly be a form of healing.

another take for me is that chromatica is also a plea for her little monsters. Even though she has alot of fans, alot of them are very harsh in their critique of her music, her tours and other choices. And so she created a dance album, since thats what the fans say they want during Joanne era (if anyone remembers gagaisoverparty after joanne is released). In the song Fun tonight, she expresses that
"You love the paparazzi, love the fame
Even though you know it causes me pain
I feel like I'm in a prison hell
Stick my hands through the steels bars and yell"
Paparazzi, one of her biggest songs and fame her debut album, are both dance songs. The fans always asks about another paparazi song, boxing her artistry in pop music. Its a pop album and yet oozing with sorrow: not just a juxtaposition but a contradictory. Fun tonight is about not having fun, Alice is about not being named alice but wanting to go to wonderland, Rain on me is about wanting to be dry but being under the rain, plastic doll is about not being a plastic doll. For me its even an antithesis of the album the fame and fame monster, where art, sociology of fame and darkness is accepted and almost worshipped, chromatica is about the after effects of fame, when new girls arrive, when the audience is gone, when your body aches from doing your best performing.

The story of Gaga's depression through the Joanne era and healing through the Chromatica era kinda reminds me of Katy Perry. While the stories of the records Joanne and Witness may not be the exact same, it is kinda similar. During Witness, Katy had a vision for the record. She wanted to be herself during the era (Katheryn Hudson). But all the hate she recieved just damaged her. While with Joanne, although which was well more positively recieved than Witness, Gaga tried to fix the issues her family, and especially her dad, was going through, but that backfired and it damaged her. But this year. Gaga and Katy are healing. With Chromatica, Gaga is dancing through her pain, while with Katy's upcoming record Smile, she is taking back her smile and enjoying life. Idk, i just think the stories are similar because with their previous records, they seemed depressed and with their new records, they seem happier.

this album means so much to me. i was in the middle of a really bad drug problem when the album was released, and on first listen of the album , 911 stuck out to me the most. in a way it was honestly the saddest song on the record and i had such a connection to it. What i appreciate so much about this record is it's underlying meanings and stories contrasted with the upbeat production, reminding me that it's okay to feel pain, just as long as you recognise all the good that's also around you.

For a lot of the times, music is very simple. Upbeat songs are happy, and sad songs are slow. Chromatica proves different. The entire album is all edm dance music, but most of the songs has a tint of sadness to it, but not explicitly. Unlike Riri’s We Found Love, or Robyn’s Dancing On My Own, which are amazing songs which this upbeat tempo but sad tone, Chromatica doesn’t instantly give you an sad, melancholic vibe. However, the lyrics and the music, when you listen to you long enough, is so incredibly vulnerable, almost like when you see a drunk person dancing on the dance floor, alone, crying, but giving her best dance of her life. It’s trauma, depression, but also embrace and acceptance. This will mark a new era of pop, the kind of upbeat club music that will bring you to cry on the dance floor, but also bring you to heal.

You *HAVE TO* go listen to *Above & Beyond* then. This very comment is what they have sought after: dance through the hardest times in your life to see a better tomorrow. Go listen to Peace of Mind, My Own Hymn, Another Chance, or Reverie. I’ve seen them 13 times and half of them I was that person alone in the crowd crying, but there was always someone there to hug me and let me know I will be okay and can make it through it! (I wasn’t always the only lonely one though, I saw others crying and getting emotional!) Seriously go check them out and their label Anjunabeats.

Of course all her records have included some form of disco (with the exclusion of Joanne), with this record, you really hear house music. You can’t be following a trend if you’re not doing it.

admittedly i haven't really been a huge fan of lady gaga's music since her initial debut, but when i saw the aesthetics of this new era and kept hearing endless amounts of praise and adoration for chromatica, i knew i had to check it out! imagine my surprise and delight when i discovered an entire album's worth of solid gold, and this is coming from someone who very rarely enjoys an artists works from start to finish. i appreciate and admire all of the different genres and musical decades she pulled from, even more so because her signature sound brings them altogether with a cohesion you don't often see!
i know there were a few stylistic choices and risks she made on the album that didn't pay off for everyone (like the drum n bass break of the holy track that is "sine from above") but they made me enjoy chromatica so much more. even if nothing lady gaga has ever created tickles you first of all, how? she's such a chameleon who's unafraid of trying new sounds and she has the skill to pull them off! secondly it's becoming impossible to deny her sheer talent and artistry, so despite not being a huge fan i've always regarded her as That Bitch.
chromatica sounds like pop music did twenty years ago, today, and twenty years into the future. that's why lady gaga is so influential!

The concept of Chromatica alone, video game inspired/escapist world that we can dance to despite everything that's going on, is ICONIC. The only artist in 2020 to have a concept to trend. We keep repeating the "we're going to Chromatica" as if it was a place but in fact it's an escapist form of art that actually realises real world struggles. No shade on other big artists that released music this year but i don't hear lines that incorporate the concept of 'Rare', 'Future Nostalgia', nor 'After Hours'. I like those bodies of work but compared to Chromatica, they don't have the longevity of the concept that this album has. The only concept that i find comparable with (in the extent of creativity) is TS "Folklore" which is also done pretty good in a completely different way both thriving separately with their respective concepts.
Haters will always use arguments that are outdated but no one can deny the fact that Lady Gaga is a staple in Pop Music and in Pop Culture. A LOT OF THE NEW ARTISTS LOOK UP TO HER. Musically, there are only a few standout tracks I'd prefere over her other past albums but this album blows away most of the competition this year.

CHROMATICA is by far Gaga's single most cohesive album to date, and I think this era also further enhanced Gaga's position among all-time greats in the music industry, especially when you begin to realize that she didn't quite at least moderately promote this era relative to virtually all hugely (commercially and critically) successful uptempo pop albums in history and still actually join those ranks, more than a year since Stupid Love even got leaked. This album also spawned the first all-female collaboration to debut at #1 in history (c/o Gaga and Ariana Grande) to widespread critical acclaim, making it smoother for succeeding female collaborations after them to do the same on those charts.

The album reminded me a lot of The Beatles "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" in terms of one is listening to a play or a show.

This album feels really refreshing, I really loved her return to making pure pop music. As much as I love this album, I must admit that it's not one of the strongest in 2020. For me, it was kind of overshadowed by After Hours, Folklore and Future Nostalgia which are all better albums in my opinion. Anyway it's not really a competition so I'm happy for her.

as gaga fan since 2008. I think Chromatica is a safe album for her. After trying totally different sounds and always create something new she needed a pop record that would just let her back on track with pop. I don't think the album it's innovative that much, but we missed so much her dance roots that's it's fine to say that's a good album. I just think she will need to elevate the bar for the next one. But can't wait to see the Vmas and 1 or 2 new singles from it.

    • @Sapphire901
      @Sapphire901 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

But let's be honest we all expect Gaga to raise the bar with every album.. but isn't that impossible? We should not even compare Chromatica to her previous work because this is just a new era for her.
