  • Welcome back to Pop Dissected! In today's video, we're going to take a look back at Katy Perry's fourth studio record, "Witness".
We're going to look at the singles; "Chained to the Rhythm", "Bon Appetit" and "Swish Swish" to try and understand why there was a disconnect between Katy's message of 'purposeful pop' and her political intent with this era.
We'll additionally discuss the "Witness" album as well, and uncover why it actually is the 'purposeful' pop record Katy intended it to be.
Be sure to drop a like, subscribe and turn on that notification bell for more future content on all your favorite pop stars!

The album was truly ahead of this time. It’s, slowly, getting more liked by people. It was her most transparent album since ootb and also showed some of her best work. The genre change to electro pop made it sound a lot better as well and showed her growth. It’s her most honest album since ootb too. She should of never sold it as “purposeful pop” as it made people think it was political, it wasn’t. It was her honest and it had a purpose of showing who she is and her growth. I hate how it’s badly portrayed and that many label it a “bad” album without listening. It proved how fake critics are too as they complained when Katy did bubblegum pop but hated her when she changed and wanted her old self back. Also, it invented “flopping”, if a person “flops” it is called their witness era but then again this era out performed some people’s recent peaks.

I think people really didn't like her new image, but there's a lot of issues like the performances were too bizarre and polarizing, her personality become way more ridiculized by media and some of her interviews and promo were a bit over the top, like Artpop by Lady Gaga or American life by Madonna.
But i agree that Katy was so bullied for being too political and now there are so many celebrities that are into politics and get a lot of praise for that, Katy was ahead of her time and i really wish that she return to her succesful times with her music.

I've been thinking a lot in Katy and her "evolution" lately, specially since Chromatica is out. I think Lady Gaga also went through a transition from her pop persona to her true self (Stefania Germanotta), but she has received praise for it, unlike Katy. I think that maybe because the general public never felt truly comfortable with Gaga's controversial persona. With Katy Perry and her colorful cheerful personality they never had a problem, so when she separated from that and became more real, they didn't like it. That's my little reflection on your video🥰🥰 Thanks for doing it a keep on with the good work😘

Jorgimar Gomez I also think it was easier for Gaga bc I feel the general public have always taken Gaga more seriously as a artist. A constant criticism Gaga received at the height of her popularity was from music critics who noted the separation between her controversial, artistic image and her dance pop catchy music and many critics felt Gaga was too talented to make the same basic electro-pop music as Katy, Rihanna and Kesha. Critics were welcomed and very happy to see herself be more serious to her music and showcases her talent as a vocalist, a songwriter and overall a musician as suppose to bring more serious with the visuals.

Taylor spent a whole year quiet on social media in addition reputation incorporated trap music influences in a lot of songs so it benefited to be part a thriving genre. I mean, sure I guess witness was “a flop” for Katy Perry standards, but I think it’s one of my fav Katy Perry albums, and all her singles have a lot of views on TH-cam, and I remember hearing swish swish, bone appetite, and chained to the rhythm all over the radio.

  • @immersedinpossible7372

I think the pressure to be so woke all the time influenced so much of this album. she went from the controversy around the AMA performance of Unconditionally and the video for This is How We Do to being torn apart when she tried to change and "play by the rules".
Iconicccc album. I hope her next one hits Teenage Dream levels 💅
Edit: as much as I agree pop stars need to be aware, etc. The real icons spent much of their time not being self conscious and focusing on the main event: entertaining, moving and inspiring us all.

It surprises me how much I needed this retrospective! In particular I found illuminating the things that you said at the end about the tracks and how they relate to the concept of liberation. I'm definitely going to listen to witness again, even though I will never forgive Katy for not releasing Witness as the first single and Roulette. Thank you very much, your work is really appreciated!

    My two cents...
    Witness is fucking underrated.
I am a new Katycat and I love her images, she keeps developing herself and inventing great ideas.
Ive started reading the lyrics most of the time before listening to a full album and Im so shookt of Katy's writing ability. And I loved it when she goes double entendre 🤣 like Tsunami oh my god. Listening to that song is hot.
Plus chained to the rhythm is a genius song. Its also my theme song for the Philippine govt where Im living 😂 its so woke..
Bon appettit is a lit song. Love that one and the music video ❤️
Into me you see, is the song she made for Orlando Bloom, reading the lyrics of "you're like a sailor with a heart that anchored me" mind you, he's the Will Turner in the Pirates of the Carribean. I can go on and on but the one reading this must read then listen to Katy's lyrics/music.
I knew I was 12 yrs late but I am so glad I did. Plus she's a great human too. ♥️♥️♥️ God bless everyone!

We had our own inside jokes about the songs and the day of the release we bought it together and it’s our little CD baby that we share custody over. We may not love everything about it but it’s definitely not a bad album and it’s one we enjoy together. We’re so proud of Witness and are always going to vibe with her. This sounds so stupid writing it out to a bunch of random people on the internet, but I thought I’d share. Katy went somewhere new and shouldn’t be ashamed of that. I went back and listened again today to the songs I hardly ever went back to and I’m surprised at how much of this album I truly enjoy.

Katy's Witness & Gaga's ARTPOP both flopped just because people expected similar sounding records to their well known previous works.
But being truly authentic to yourself and being brave enough to go opposite direction society expects you to go - is what really shows person'a growth and strength

    1. Katy was politically active but not politically correct during this era, her songs were purposeful but fell flat to convey the message to the general public.
    2. The songs were good and were different from what the music scene was like during tht time, so people didn't hop onto it.
    3. People mistook "purposeful" for "impactful".
    4. I really like this record because atlast some celebrity used their enormous platform to shed some light on important issues and start a discussion.
    5. I think it is one of the most iconic records because it showed that creativity has no limits and liberation can mean different things for different people.

Thank you for your perceptive analysis. I would appreciate a fresh analysis on Bon Appetit's explosive popularity in streaming - over a billion views in 3 1/2 years. That's impressive!!! At this pace Bon Appetit could become the 3rd most viewed video of Katy's within 2-3 years. What does this say about the album long-term? My view is that Witness could have a long-term popularity it did not achieve when released. It has more depth than much of her other work. Sometimes this happens with different kinds of works in music and movies. I started listening to Katy in 2019 and really like Witness. I do think Roulette should have been the second single and believe it could have been a top ten hit. If it did that might have changed some views of the album with 2 top ten singles. But I am no expert on these matters, just a fan. Thanks. :)
