I got burned too many times with my first two cars so I just said screw it if I can lift it I can fix it, so unless it's an engine pull let's learn it!
@@michaelransdell I did an automatic transmission without a transmission jack I used a regular 3 ton car jack from Walmart 2 jack stands and a ratchet strap it worked great, also used one of the ratchet straps to support the engine while the motor mounts were unbolted, after that transmission replacement that 2001 Acura TL made it to 275k before the muffler blew out and rust took its course in the trunk so exhaust fumes came right in, engine started misfiring it was time to junk it, used junkyard cheap $643 transmission that was recently rebuilt before the car it was in before ours got junked, outlived the car and it got parted out so it’s waiting to go in another car! That transmission had 295k on it as well at the point the car got junked because it had more mileage on it than our car did at 240k when I put it in!
I can fix and trouble shoot just about anything mechanical unfortunately, everybody and there friends know it. I was tearing washers and dryer’s apart at 13 , tore my first car apart and fix timing chain at 16 . Mom bet dad that it wouldn’t ever run again, it was funny when she came out of the house and the looks on her face, when she had told me that!!😊. But I’m 65 now and my phone still ring’s to much, my wifey says I don’t know how to say no. But I’m starting to learn, this body is saying no. I’ve had a reverse shoulder replacement and left knee replacement and right hip replacement, besides a four organ transplant. And many other operations also.
No but I remember hiring a flat bed truck to haul my Chevy Trailblazer home so I could cut the spare tire holder off from under it and replace the tire with a 3 inch wood screw sticking out of it. I took a threaded rod, bent the end of it and made up my own spare tire holder. In Michigan, those crank spare tire holders rot out in a winter.
Make sure it has gas, that was a big issue with us, that's why all the trucks get filled every morning. After that I got nuthin 😁👍WHATS IT GOT ERIC OOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

It looks like rock since it's dark reddish-brown, but it's a natural salt mined in Utah that isn't quite as brutal on cars. That said, it's only used in the highlands like Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, etc as they're constantly full of icy roads in the winter.

Imagine for a minute how reliable those modules might be if put on the inside of the vehicle, six inches away from where they thought it was smart to put them. But then they couldn't sell people a new car every few years.
Sensitive electronics and salty roads are a recipe for a bad time, my newer ford car needed a new power steering module because the plastic housing cracked and let moisture in. "Built Ford Tough"

Not sure if you are familiar with TH-camr Mustie 1 I use the old Toro lawn mower a couple of weeks ago. Self propelled barely does. Mustie finds my model lawn mower for free on the tree belt last Sunday. Fixes everything including a gummed up self propelled mechanism. Mine now has self propelled again.
Best thing to do would be to also subscribe to FordTechMakuloco. He does a lot of videos in Ford F-150's (He's a Ford technician), including how to redo the timing (including the phasers) and do the spark plug job correctly.
Send it to Louis Rossmann, he'd use the proper amount of flux and parts from the dumpster behind the plant in China to fix it. Plus he's really big on Right to Repair, IE getting schematics and parts to fix your own electronics.
My 04 F150 did this a few years ago, frame is super clean on this truck and didn’t have any rust behind it. The aluminum still corroded just like the one on the video, I think it was a dissimilar metals issue, only worsened by rust up in areas like yours. Trucks down south just took a few more years to see the issue 😁
As a former computer tech I am very familiar with the smell you speak of. Very distinct and pungent. It makes for an EZ fix but only if the new part doesn't go up in flames also. :o)
I'd really like to know what that engineer was thinking when he/she mounted the FPDM under the bed. Why not take it a step farther and just screw it to the back bumper to make it easy to change.
Actually, putting it inside the back bumper would make it harder to replace. Some engineer forgot about galvanic corrosion. Zinc against steel don't go together.
I had the same thing on my 2014 crank no start! They charged me for a fuel pump 1200! Few months later same thing told me overheated fuse! Few months later crank no start! Seen you do it changed the relay and cranked and turned on the first go! Thank to you man!!
Here in Florida the cars die for reasons other than rust. One of my work trucks is a 2007 5.4 F150 (King Ranch package - used to be the boss’s truck). It’s got over 300k miles and keeps ticking.
An easy check for the module is to remove the connector from the module and install 2 15 amp mini fuses into the harness connector, fuses fit perfectly. This confirms powers and grounds, also get you out of a bind if your dead side the road

Another interesting sharing of your diagnostic technique. I used to hang out at my local Shell dealers station from time to time, (my dad used to purchase his gas there since before I was born), and I used to observe the mechanic there as he worked on cars. I learned a great deal of what I know today from that exposure. Ah, life before OSHA made it unwise to have non-employees in the service area. I turn my own wrench for almost everything I encounter, and rarely need help, but if I lived in your neck of the woods, I would definitely choose your shop to handle anything I could not fix. The aftermarket company realized that the aluminum sitting directly on steel was causing galvanic corrosion so they added a isolator to keep the aluminum back of the module further away from the steel crossmember :)
when I moved back to New Jersey and I started work as this mechanic there I would have to say you might get the spare tire down on the vehicles maybe one out of 10 times and I saw your video and just reminded me that
I have replaced some pump driver modules myself in years past. I think Ford has a kit to allow the module to stand off from the frame to help keep it from causing issues again. Keep up the good work.👍

I’d inspect that spare tire cable while I was at it. I was driving home one night and just as I pulled into my driveway, it felt like I ran over a stump. When I got out my spare tire was laying up next to the road. The cable broke right at the pivot where it goes through the rim hole. Glad it didn’t happen at 70 mph on the interstate. When the tire flipped it lifted the entire rear end off the ground.
Hello from Alberta Canada. I had this problem with my 2010 f truck in a grocery store parking lot. I was kinda freaked out at the time. Avery kind guy came along and asked if he might help he said he used to work on fords and said ckeck the fuse box ,yes the engine fuse was blown, we replaced it with a ( spare) an away we went. I thanked my savior very much as he saved me about $400. Check the fuses first.
Been binge watching your stuff for the past month or so and will continue to do so. I'm going to hopefully be starting mechanic school in the fall once I've got my second COVID shot. Gonna be keeping all the things I've learned here in mind (or as much as possible, think my mental hard-drive is getting full) so maybe I'll get good grades, haha! Going for an Assosciates in Automotive Diagnostics and Repair. I love the hell out of cars, so I'm looking forward to it. Might even get into car flipping once I'm out of school and have a bit of experience.

Love your videos because they show that it’s possible to diagnose electrical issues. My F150 had the same problem but turns out it was the MAF sensor all along. Spent a good $1k on two new fuel pumps and two driver modules. Decided screw it let’s start testing everything. Came down to the MAF sensor and despite it reading correct air flow for some reason it wasn’t sending signal to the ECU.
On my '08, the whole housing of that module had rotted away and the bare board was literally hanging under my truck and somehow still working. Needless to say, I replaced it *Pronto*
I think they put it close to the fuel pump for a reason, but the new one comes with a revised mounting solution to stop the galvanic corrosion from having an aluminum module bolted to a steel frame. It’s been under there for a few years in New Hampshire winters and still looks fairly new.
I think the method to your madness when it comes to troubleshooting is perfect. Don't deviate from the plan and you won't get bit. Great job Eric! Hi Mrs O!
Thanks for the heads up, I have 98 F150 that I've kept in the driveway & moved into street for yard tree removal. Truck has always started easily, went to move it back into the driveway, key into ignition, it started and quit, turning over but no start. 4.6 V8 Triton engine. Think it is fuel issue and I'm doing my TH-cam- U research. Hoping my year is similar. Thanks again 👍

I can say with absolute certainty if it was me doing this job the studs would have sheared off at the first sniff of a socket. How the hell do you get away with spinning them out dry like that?
Engineers keep designing these things with heat sinks made of aluminum, which never plays nice with water and steel. I wonder if a barrier of plastic would slow down the galvanic corrosion.
The obvious thing is, that original module has lasted 14 years, the new module will outlive the rest of the truck, but I think if I owned a vehicle in New York, I would be under it protecting as much as i could, using rubber/nylon spacers, soft seal spray etc
For the players at home, you can put a 20 amp fuse in the wiring harness module connector to effectively bypass it and put the fuel pump at 100% duty cycle. Obviously it won't work when the supply fuse is roasted, but it's a quick diag from there.
F150 gas tanks, fuel pumps, modules ... I had a 9 year old in NJ ... fairly rust free till it died at a 7-11 right across from my mechanics place ... was really busy at work so had him fix it ... he showed me the tank when he dropped it, pretty bad ... new pump. tank and harness ... good work truck, but the fix was over 1K (luckily no tow)... luckily I was making 2X's that a day on that job ... northern NJ is semi rust belt ... in PA now and they salt the hell out of the roads for days before it snows ... like Eric's neck of the woods, most cars are toast in 10-12 years ... retired and down to my old 2000 Cherokee that looks brand new, no frame rot, but I spend half my time changing brakes, brake lines and spraying fluid film on the undercarriage ... just did new slip on rockers ... 252 K on the old 4.0 (new bosche 4 port fuel injectors) ... runs like a top !
Had a '07 f150 with all the common failures. This fuel pump deal, passenger side exhaust manifold, stuck spark plugs, two ac compressors, two rusted steering shafts, fuse missing from fusebox for the 7 pin trailer power (factory doesn't put one in), limited slip replacements, brake light permanently on from faulty dash. Funny thing is the biggest gripe people have with these is the 5.4 3v failing and mine ran like a top for the 120k that I owned it. Overall the repairs were either covered under warranty or cheap enough and that truck never left me stranded.
Thank-you for the fix. I tried the fuses was shaking my head. replaced the fuel pump module and waalaa. Even went to napa for the part and i never go there. Thanks again.
Common problem with a Ford. My 2004 did the same thing. Poor engineering to put that under the truck. Mine was hanging on the wires and the sides of the module was gone. It would start fine until it rained. I took it to the ford garage they replaced Air filter, cleaned mass airflow sensor and said it was fixed. I picked it up drove home, next morning tried to go to work and it would not start. Did my own research on line, checked the module and found it hanging. Replaced it myself, I think it was $100.00 or so. I paid Ford garage $250.00 for nothing. I also showed them the module I took off, they pretty much said oh well. I don't deal there anymore and tell everyone I can not too.
Its a common problem and they started using standoffs since originally the alloy back of the module would rot away when in direct contact with the cross member metal and dirt collecting there did not help. It seems it still rots with standoffs and salt only makes it worse. A periodic visual inspection cant hurt if you care to look at least once a year.

I learned about the bed lining an entire vehicle when I got my old wrangler many moons ago. It was also the vehicle that motivated me to invest in tools for spraying fluid film (gun and Wands). Lotta $ for us folks in the NE in that gig. But yeah years ago saw a dude with a wrangler all bed lined with clear bed liner at the grocery store, we started talking... good times. It’s a solid idea and kinda even looks neat. Almost like old cast armor turrets from older tanks (Shermans etc). So it has a weird look that’s kind of appealing to some folks. Piss on rust.
Yeah, have to. On my truck the T shaped hook at the end inside the bumper isn't really good for locking it in place, using a power tool will will make it pop off and younstop then readjust. Pain. This is actually faster. But I was surprised the power tool didn't break those nuts and studs off being so crusty
@Jimmy S Exactly. I’ve replaced one set on my buddy’s work truck to help him out......took just shy of 6 hours and had the notorious back two welded into the bore and didn’t have an extractor kit. Called every auto parts place within a 20 mile radius and no one had it. Ended up borrowing one from a shade tree mechanic friend. Needless to say, NEVER AGAIN!!!! 😂
Just warm the engine up for a few minutes, and after you remove the coils, you can either use a stubby impact wrench, or just turn really slowly. I didn't break a single one doing that.
Just watched your video after my dad's 2006 F150 5.4L crank nos start issue. It was the OEM fuel pump driver module. It was so corroded and cracked in half. Got new part at advance auto for $100. Issue Fixed!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a spare tire carrier actually drop down, and THEN go back up !
Being from Phoenix, I’ve never seen one not come down and be able to go back up. They always work.

A good example is how long the batteries last in vehicles that have it located in the interior or trunk. Years longer than the battery under the hood.

We got the same problem with the salt in Quebec, Canada is why I recommend to recommend to everyone to get a Krown or Fuid film Rust treatment

When Mounting a Replacement I used to grind the frame space clean and spray a little rubber silicone around it.

Another interesting sharing of your diagnostic technique. I used to hang out at my local Shell dealers station from time to time, (my dad used to purchase his gas there since before I was born), and I used to observe the mechanic there as he worked on cars. I learned a great deal of what I know today from that exposure. Ah, life before OSHA made it unwise to have non-employees in the service area. I turn my own wrench for almost everything I encounter, and rarely need help, but if I lived in your neck of the woods, I would definitely choose your shop to handle anything I could not fix. The aftermarket company realized that the aluminum sitting directly on steel was causing galvanic corrosion so they added a isolator to keep the aluminum back of the module further away from the steel crossmember :)
...until the salty crud builds up in between and off you go...

I have replaced some pump driver modules myself in years past. I think Ford has a kit to allow the module to stand off from the frame to help keep it from causing issues again. Keep up the good work.👍

I’d inspect that spare tire cable while I was at it. I was driving home one night and just as I pulled into my driveway, it felt like I ran over a stump. When I got out my spare tire was laying up next to the road. The cable broke right at the pivot where it goes through the rim hole. Glad it didn’t happen at 70 mph on the interstate. When the tire flipped it lifted the entire rear end off the ground.

Hello from Alberta Canada. I had this problem with my 2010 f truck in a grocery store parking lot. I was kinda freaked out at the time. Avery kind guy came along and asked if he might help he said he used to work on fords and said ckeck the fuse box ,yes the engine fuse was blown, we replaced it with a ( spare) an away we went. I thanked my savior very much as he saved me about $400. Check the fuses first.

Been binge watching your stuff for the past month or so and will continue to do so. I'm going to hopefully be starting mechanic school in the fall once I've got my second COVID shot. Gonna be keeping all the things I've learned here in mind (or as much as possible, think my mental hard-drive is getting full) so maybe I'll get good grades, haha! Going for an Assosciates in Automotive Diagnostics and Repair. I love the hell out of cars, so I'm looking forward to it. Might even get into car flipping once I'm out of school and have a bit of experience.

Love your videos because they show that it’s possible to diagnose electrical issues. My F150 had the same problem but turns out it was the MAF sensor all along. Spent a good $1k on two new fuel pumps and two driver modules. Decided screw it let’s start testing everything. Came down to the MAF sensor and despite it reading correct air flow for some reason it wasn’t sending signal to the ECU.
On my '08, the whole housing of that module had rotted away and the bare board was literally hanging under my truck and somehow still working. Needless to say, I replaced it *Pronto*
Should have modified it and run some extra wire and re-fitted it under the hood or something.
I think they put it close to the fuel pump for a reason, but the new one comes with a revised mounting solution to stop the galvanic corrosion from having an aluminum module bolted to a steel frame. It’s been under there for a few years in New Hampshire winters and still looks fairly new.

I don't think I've ever seen an F-150 of that generation NOT have this problem at some point.

Eric, Jon V. Here. I’m from Maine. The state love’s Salt and Calcium. The Drive side of most car’s and truck’s are solid rust.
Same thing happened to my father's truck! 2007 and that fuel module was rotted the same way, good old northern Wisconsin salty roads!!

Thanks for the heads up, I have 98 F150 that I've kept in the driveway & moved into street for yard tree removal. Truck has always started easily, went to move it back into the driveway, key into ignition, it started and quit, turning over but no start. 4.6 V8 Triton engine. Think it is fuel issue and I'm doing my TH-cam- U research. Hoping my year is similar. Thanks again 👍

Engineers keep designing these things with heat sinks made of aluminum, which never plays nice with water and steel. I wonder if a barrier of plastic would slow down the galvanic corrosion.
The obvious thing is, that original module has lasted 14 years, the new module will outlive the rest of the truck, but I think if I owned a vehicle in New York, I would be under it protecting as much as i could, using rubber/nylon spacers, soft seal spray etc
For the players at home, you can put a 20 amp fuse in the wiring harness module connector to effectively bypass it and put the fuel pump at 100% duty cycle.
Obviously it won't work when the supply fuse is roasted, but it's a quick diag from there.
F150 gas tanks, fuel pumps, modules ... I had a 9 year old in NJ ... fairly rust free till it died at a 7-11 right across from my mechanics place ... was really busy at work so had him fix it ... he showed me the tank when he dropped it, pretty bad ... new pump. tank and harness ... good work truck, but the fix was over 1K (luckily no tow)... luckily I was making 2X's that a day on that job ... northern NJ is semi rust belt ... in PA now and they salt the hell out of the roads for days before it snows ... like Eric's neck of the woods, most cars are toast in 10-12 years ... retired and down to my old 2000 Cherokee that looks brand new, no frame rot, but I spend half my time changing brakes, brake lines and spraying fluid film on the undercarriage ... just did new slip on rockers ... 252 K on the old 4.0 (new bosche 4 port fuel injectors) ... runs like a top !
Had a '07 f150 with all the common failures. This fuel pump deal, passenger side exhaust manifold, stuck spark plugs, two ac compressors, two rusted steering shafts, fuse missing from fusebox for the 7 pin trailer power (factory doesn't put one in), limited slip replacements, brake light permanently on from faulty dash. Funny thing is the biggest gripe people have with these is the 5.4 3v failing and mine ran like a top for the 120k that I owned it. Overall the repairs were either covered under warranty or cheap enough and that truck never left me stranded.

Common problem with a Ford. My 2004 did the same thing. Poor engineering to put that under the truck. Mine was hanging on the wires and the sides of the module was gone. It would start fine until it rained. I took it to the ford garage they replaced Air filter, cleaned mass airflow sensor and said it was fixed. I picked it up drove home, next morning tried to go to work and it would not start. Did my own research on line, checked the module and found it hanging. Replaced it myself, I think it was $100.00 or so. I paid Ford garage $250.00 for nothing. I also showed them the module I took off, they pretty much said oh well. I don't deal there anymore and tell everyone I can not too.

Its a common problem and they started using standoffs since originally the alloy back of the module would rot away when in direct contact with the cross member metal and dirt collecting there did not help. It seems it still rots with standoffs and salt only makes it worse. A periodic visual inspection cant hurt if you care to look at least once a year.

I learned about the bed lining an entire vehicle when I got my old wrangler many moons ago. It was also the vehicle that motivated me to invest in tools for spraying fluid film (gun and Wands). Lotta $ for us folks in the NE in that gig.
But yeah years ago saw a dude with a wrangler all bed lined with clear bed liner at the grocery store, we started talking... good times. It’s a solid idea and kinda even looks neat. Almost like old cast armor turrets from older tanks (Shermans etc). So it has a weird look that’s kind of appealing to some folks.

Those fpdm's go bad all the time in older fords. Everyone always thinks the fuel pump has gone bad when its just the fpdm which is way easy to replace

Yeah, have to. On my truck the T shaped hook at the end inside the bumper isn't really good for locking it in place, using a power tool will will make it pop off and younstop then readjust. Pain. This is actually faster. But I was surprised the power tool didn't break those nuts and studs off being so crusty

@Jimmy S Exactly. I’ve replaced one set on my buddy’s work truck to help him out......took just shy of 6 hours and had the notorious back two welded into the bore and didn’t have an extractor kit. Called every auto parts place within a 20 mile radius and no one had it. Ended up borrowing one from a shade tree mechanic friend. Needless to say, NEVER AGAIN!!!! 😂
I replaced mine a couple years ago. 07 5.4. Two of the 7 broke. Why 7? I’ll leave number 8 to the next guy. I know when to not test my luck.
Just warm the engine up for a few minutes, and after you remove the coils, you can either use a stubby impact wrench, or just turn really slowly. I didn't break a single one doing that.
Just watched your video after my dad's 2006 F150 5.4L crank nos start issue. It was the OEM fuel pump driver module. It was so corroded and cracked in half. Got new part at advance auto for $100. Issue Fixed!
