My advice to anyone who likes a drink is set yourself some parameters. Do not drink more than x times a week. Do not drink before this time. Do not drink if you are working next day. Be very careful when drinking shorts (preferable not to touch the stuff.) Do not drink to solve a problem it will only increase it. These guidelines are best before it becomes an addiction but addiction creeps up on you. You eat to much you never see yourself changing until that pair of trousers will no longer fit and you think how the hell did that happen. Suddenly why do you crave a drink rather than look forward to meeting the lads for a beer. It is now the beer not the lads. I have seen people I would have never have dreamed of becoming alcoholics (they hide it very well) quickly when put in an environment or circumstance and they started to drink vodka everyday just social then a bottle on their own. Scary because I know anyone can fall into this trap but being forewarned helps. I drink 2 evenings a week after 20.00hrs. I will have a drink on a special occasion at other times which are few. I would never dream of having a drink in the day and if I did want one I know I have a problem and stopping is the only solution. Dying an alcoholic is a painful slow death. My brother who died swore he never did much drinking to the doctor I think he really believed his own BS. I cried at his funereal. I think it was the first time I had as an adult. I have tried to learn from this so his death was not in vain.

A profoundly moving story, and so sorry you had to go through this family tragedy. I think like other things - smoking, taking drugs, - drinking alcohol creeps up on people and often they don’t recognise, or perhaps refuse to see the warning signs that they must stop, until it is too late. We live in an addictive society and world, it is tough to abstain, even when we know some things are very bad for our health. Life is 24/7 nowadays and it is so debilitating, I struggle to keep up with the pace of life, it is so fast. The world is so stressful and exhausting now. Life is tough.

Unfortunately a lot of people won’t give up until it’s too late everything is always down the line always start tomorrow drugs are not on tv ads smoking is but just shows the bad what it does which no health benefits at all but alcohol it’s buy a pack get one free etc or a new beer what’s the next best thing saying u gotta try it but the ads don’t say try smoking or try this new drug but alcohol you gotta try most of us say smoking is bad and taking drugs is bad but we don’t say that about alcohol that’s because there’s constant ads supporting it for us to buy it

like that - the relationship with alcohol is a "long painful affair" - I have been sleeping long, hard and very deep. I started drinking at 14 years old and thought it was "the answer". I am 59 now. I did stop for 5 years once but then went back and would do massive binges. I managed to taper down to 4 drinks a night most nights but on weekends, I'd often go overboard again but physically, I could not take 10-12 drinks. Maybe 6-8. But I was getting quite sick. I thought I was just getting old but it was the alcohol. I have been off for about a week now, thanks in large part to finding these videos. I look similar to you but roots are in Ireland. I am not going back because continue to drink just means an early death for me.

I’ve watched podcast I sent you link to, which explained how even as a non heavy drinker I would be classed as someone with a drink problem. I don’t drink huge amounts but I drink in a pattern, I look forward to drink, I plan to drink, I excuse my drinking. I tick the boxes. The question I need to answer within myself is can I live with knowing I’ve got a problem, knowing it’s going to only bring bad things? Can I drink again? Do I attempt to cut down long term?

I was "fortunate" - from about 25 my hangovers became worse, so I went from drinking the same as everyone else to cutting back in order to avoid the effects of hangovers. It got to the point 15 years I was drinking zero- it just petered out undramatically .I now and then fancy the idea of a drink eg having a meal in a country pub but I can do without it/resist it/want to be a non-drinker.

Where I live, there are pubs on every corner - at least four in close proximity to my door. I have severe menopausal symptoms, including feeling physically claustrophobic, so at times I go and eat outside my front door. I went out there tonight at just before 11pm, and what do you know - the pub opposite on the other side of the road is open, it might have been after 11pm, and drunks having a gawp because I am eating on my doorstep and finding it highly amusing (small brains, never mind small minds). This is the behaviour of people who drink, and go to pubs. And I am certainly NOT amused. Why four pubs in close proximity? one or two would be more than enough, and people who get drunk and behave like that are vermin, pests, a nuisance. Hence, why I don’t like pubs and alcohol. It doesn’t matter what I am doing, it is none of their business, but because they are inebriated, they are watching me. This is why I hate what alcohol does to people.

Perhaps it seems comical to people to see a woman standing outside the door eating, but for goodness sake, you would think they would have better things to occupy them - I thought they would be indoors in bed, to get up for work in the morning, but apparently not. I am not hurting anyone, eating outside the door is not a criminal offence (as far as I am aware). People are crazy!!
