I love the way the young people think it reminds me of my kids and it makes me feel happy and warm/cozy I want to get in the bed and watch old movies and eat popcorn now
i will always test the valves, but only on my own instrument. Because i pick that one up intent on playing. Usually one doesn't hand you an instrument to play, but rather to hold it for a second, and there you don't mess with it at all haha
I’ve had two trumpets and two cornets. Three out of the four had a sticky first valve that could not be cured mainly due to being cheap Chinese made instruments such as ‘Partot’, The only one that gave a good performance and got me a distinction at grade four RSM (UK) was my Yamaha student model trumpet supplied by my school in the 1970’s. Interesting fact, Yamaha first started making trumpets back in 1966! 🇬🇧🙏🌈♥️
As a clarinet player I do this sometimes with my levers or whatever they’re called. If I don’t touch my clarinet for a long time the buttons ‘crunch’ and it’s rlly satisfying 🫠
I do that as a tuba lol. It’s the fourth day of school, and we haven’t started playing yet due to all of the beginning of school stuff we had to do in class (class procedures first day, code of conduct videos second day plus a substitute, more class procedures and honestly just getting off track with joking around, and assigning cubbies and phone pockets.) However, I have reached over to the tuba that sits on a tamer between classes and did ‘the thing’ multiple times. I just want to start playing so bad 😭😭😭 We should start playing tomorrow. Hopefully people actually bring their instruments :/
I do that too even though i play Baritone and Euphonium sometimes i play Baritone if someone else takes all the Euphonium and vise versa just to make sure i dont need to oil the valves before i go to play
Click a battery onto the drill or impact…you gotta squeeze the trigger and make sure it works, even though it always has in the past. You always count the money the ATM gives you…even though it’s never been wrong. Well picking up a trumpet, it’s actually more sensible to check the valves as they do require oiling periodically.
For the brass players who “do the thing” I thought I would share my experiences on valves. Sticky valves can be due to a multitude of things however 1 is unfixable that you don’t want. Try cleaning out the inside of your valves with a snake or just a paper towel as there can be some gunk buildup in there. It is best practice to NOT mix different types of valve oil as they will usually create some gunk. Clean out the valves before changing types of oil. Also when applying oil, use thin coats. You don’t need much to make it good, thick will gunk up quicker. Pls no Blue Juice. There is a chemical in there that deteriorates the metal in the horn. Now what might be the big upset is if your valves have been bent or dented. There is NOTHING you can do do fix that. (Other than buying a new valve). So don’t drop the valves. Please. French horn players, and other rotary valves instruments. Uhhhh. Good luck. There is a way to flush the system but please don’t try to take apart the valves. You can put oil inside of the slides for quicker and better oil.
Woodwind players who are handed a trumpet, would do this every time. It's much more natural to press the keys, when you have so many, and a woodwind must press the keys to change the note. Where a brass player can change the note with their embouchure, they don't immediately feel the need to press the valves, because the valves aren't as important to them. But eventually, woodwind and brass alike, will check for sticking keys or valves, some time before they start playing.
As a baritone player, I do this to make sure my valves won't freese up/stick before I play (by freeze up, I mean that my baritone is kinda old and it's really hard to push the valves fown sometimes)
Every time I pick my trumpet up, I do this to see if a valve will stick
Same
Same, any brass instrument. The Euphoniums and Baritones are always at least a bit stuck
@@luigivids9598 No matter what I try, they always have that one little area where they're stiff. It's always my second valve for some reason as well
Always, and I mean ALWAYS check your valves. I play tuba, and I still ripple test my paddles.
Real
Imagine someone walks up to you, hands you a trumpet and then goes "FAIL"
Ok, now what
I can’t think of a more trumpet player thing to do
@JosephKosowski Yea, a very trumpet player thing to do 👌
One of the guys pulled out a mouth piece from their pocket
@@Dontrizzmygyattwhy hate him? I'd do the same and play Entry of the Gladiators
@@Dontrizzmygyatt pfft- okay then, I'd still do the same thing.
Yeah so how was that a fail??

And?
The musician equivalent of clicking the tongs one or twice to make sure they still work.
LMAO as someone who’s in band and in culinary arts that is so real 😭
Yup!
I’d say valves probably stick a lot more than tongs tho
The poopers equivalent a courtesy flush
Or going ZZZ! ZZZ! with a power drill
I've seen, met, and talked to the marine he handed that trumpet to! He's a really nice guy.
The marine had to hold back instinct
JROTC ≠ Marine
He was waiting for permission
@@anthonyfrench4410I’m confused on how you think that that’s a JROTC cadet
@@anthonyfrench4410 Not JROTC because those are not MCJROTC ranks, Ribbons. JROTC wear their ranks on the collar, not sewn on
That marine is a clarinet player too
As a flute player, i do this anytime i hold a trumpet
As a flute player, I do this anytime I hold an instrument with any kind of pushable mechanism
@@daneatfish3156 that's how I got my trombone slide destroyed
as a baritone player, i do this with any instrument, regardless of if it even has buttons
Giggity
I am also a flute player, and I also do this any time I hold a trumpet
I feel like you gotta give them a mouth peace to play. That would 100% make me do the thing.
Absolutely. The thing is definitely reveille.
They were confused that there was no mouth piece. Then they were like, ok, let's go!
I feel like the instinct is probably tied to knowing you’re about to play
The look of confusion on their faces 😅
Well done, son.
The one guy that just whipped out the mouth piece from his pocket 😂
Bro i was percussion in highschool and i still did this to every trumpet i got to hold
I main sax and I do this too
I'm flute and do this too
Yeah one time the value got stuck
I do this all the time even in my rests on pieces of music 🤣
Bro I do the same thing 😂
I play trombone and even I knew. It's like clicking the tongs or testing the drill.
i think it’s just different cause they’re holding an instrument that’s not theirs, y’know? so they want to treat it carefully
I love the way the young people think it reminds me of my kids and it makes me feel happy and warm/cozy
I want to get in the bed and watch old movies and eat popcorn now
The equivalent of clicking the tongs when you need them. Just making sure everything is moving as expected.
others: i’m too scared to press the valves
Omg I know the second person,
I saw him and the band performed for a trip I went on! They were amazing players, and I hope they are all doing well!
I’m a trombone player, yet I would still do the finger thing
I’m glad im not the only one who does this while waiting
i’ve never held a trumpet in my life but i’d still do this
I love your name and your profile picture and your comment

exactly what i was about to comment. if someone wordlessly handed me their trumpet i wouldnt think to touch the valves. but my own? ofc i would
I 100% agree with this. The 'test' was just flawed
This is like me with my saxophone, always pressing the pinky keys for G# and D#. They are the ones that ALWAYS stick.
Can relate
Yep
Im a tuba/baritone player and i always do this 😄 low brasss kicks ... ❣️🤘😂
i’m a euphonium player and i still do that
First thing I do, but I'm not a player; I've been a repairer for 40 years... second thing: I blow, looking for blockages, or leaks!
As a bass clarinet player I can confirm I would done the “thing”
Im a trombone player and i would have immediately done the thing, i love doing it whenever i get the chance 😅😂
Okay but the one guy with his mouthpiece ready in his pocket.. 😭
edit: maddie I’m famous again
If you don’t have a mouthpiece with you at a conference like this, are you even a musician? 😂

Haha, yeah, instinct. I wonder if French horn players do it because I always do that with my f-horn too.
this was best part every day in band class doing the little fidget with the trumpet
I KNOW THE SECOND GUY HE WAS MY BAND DIRECTOR FOR 4 STATES HONOR BAND

I do this when I pick up my student's trumpets, and I'm a Clarinetist! 😂
As a trumpet player, can confirm I do this without thinking of it 😂
I haven't played my Tenor Horn in YEARS and I would still do this on instinct 😂
As a trumpet player, I can confidently say I do.
As a clarinet, I do that
As a flute player, I have no idea what this means because I barely interact with the trumpets. (they are nutjobs)
Always do the thing. Sometimes even without the trumpet, to stretch the fingers.

As a fellow trumpet player, I can verify that I do that EVERY TIME I pick one up. (I knew it as soon as you handed it to the first guy😂)

Literally the first thing I do whenever I pick up any trumpet. Gotta make sure the valves are free and lubed! 😊
