I love this channel, i love the older bike builds and dirtbike rebuilds. Its really giving me the confidence to go out and try to find an old beat up bike and give it some life.
@@gideonvanniekerk4252 I feel you man. I bought a 1980 KE175 (2 stroke so it is very simple, but almost no info online which makes it harder to work on) and it was torn to shit. I replaced or restored every single part on that bike. Not an exaggeration at all. It was my first time working on anything and holy shit did I make a lot of mistakes. Now that I'm finishing up with it the only tips I can give you is just read the shit out if your service manual. It helped a lot especially for a manual written 40 years ago. Good luck. You will get it eventually.
I was thinking the same thing. No carb I have ever worked on has had that problem with the main jet and emulsion tube moving up and down. Need to look up a parts diagram. I would bet something is missing.
Dude I seriously can not wait till I can get an apartment. Ima start restoring old bikes and dirt bikes like you do. You my friend are awesome an so are your videos.
gold guy its good to see you young guys out in the garage tinkering with things making mistakes learning from them ... and sharing it with us... great video as usual...
I had this bike when I was a teenager, I grew up in a logging town with old logging roads in the mountains, I had some dirt bike tires on it, used to go up exploring in the mountains with this bike. I was thinking of this bike that's why I am here, thanks for the video.
I have this same bike in orange. God does it pour smoke when it's cold, and the 'knock/ping' sound is normal, they're loud. Mine has deserved a top end rebuild for a bit, but for short rides not pulling any major hills, the bike has never let me down. Your jet is missing a copper retention screw I believe, causing it to move.
Aw man, it really hurt when you had to destroy the paint around the kickstand, but you gotta do what you gotta do i guess. It sounds good though, it might be running a bit rich, or it might just be the fact that you have a bit too rich oil mixture, but with some adjustments i bet it'll run great!
Dude you have to film a motovlog in the woods with this bad boy! And i must say that you have done such an amazing restoration work and you deserve a lot as an engineer and of course as a youtuber! Keep rolling and making such amazing videos like that. Cant wait to see this bike fully restored and without any problems, and dont forget to get the yzf450 running! You are the best! Peace out!
'gotta let the rpm's nice and low for the break in of the new piston' few secondes later: 'alright let's see how fast we can get this to go' just kidding you didn't rev it that high.
Awesome update, sad to see you had to roach the paint job but you can always repaint it fairly easily. The butterfly was funny, be happy your girl is in to what you do too lol... Totally looking forward to the next update on this one. You have got to show it to the original owner when it's done.
Runs great, very good 2-stroke sound (and smoke) coming out of it. Just make sure you don't blow it up with the new piston as one of my friends had that with his moped.
Main jet is bolted to needle jet and needle jet was stuck to needle and moved. Needle jet in most carbs is pressed in (some gentle taps with brass rod via hole of removed slide) and screwed down by main jet, sometimes by help of a washer. If needle jet is loose, there is a big fuel leak between jet and carb body. So motor runs too rich. I would like to see how you solve the problem and how jets are fixed in this carb. But despite that "little problem", great video, as always.
This was my first bike, so watching this was fun. I recall my bike being a dirt/street mix, and had what it called a "posi-select lever" which from what I remember was intended to give the rider a whole second set of gear ratios -- one for dirt, one for street. Great little first ride!
Really nice job on the restoration! I had one of these bikes waaay back, you should definitely get or fix that carburetor because if I remember correctly that thing has a crazy power ban that should definitely get your heart beating pretty fast thats for sure! Plus theres getting the jetting right and the right mixture of pil to gas, personally I always ride my 2 strokes with a bit more oil then recommended, motor will last longer and will never have to worry about the motor seizing.. not much more, just a lil,, I always had a lot of smoke pouring out my exhaust, lol but 2 strokes usually have a pretty terrifying power ban that kicks in, some bikes have more kick than others, but either way I liked watching the progress! Have fun with it!
Looks like on that carb the washer for the main jet is missing. Dealt with a bogging issue as well somewhat like that. The jet and emulsion tube moving like that is not supposed to do that. There needs to be a washer that the jet tightens on to and the outer diameter of the washer is to be contacting the tube it sits on that way the emulsion tube can not move
I'm glad I found your channel bro!! BTW I'm curious why did you drilled out the main jet? And can you do an update on fine tuning or what you ended up doing? Thanks for the awesome contents. I have an early Suzuki Sunshiro two stroke so I'm always wanting to learn from another two stroker lol.. subbed from Thailand!
Just like many said in the comments. The main jet shouldn't move like that. if it is toasted You could get a Chinese copy "mikuni" (i think they are called maikuni) they do work well (ofc because a carburettor aint no space tech)
I second that.....try a mikuni knockoff. I just finished a 1974 TC185 and suspected carb issues. I found a pretty good copy, cheap, on Amazon. It didn't even need to be re-jetted. I still rebuilt the original carb but going this route enabled me to troubleshoot. This is a link to the carb: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P91BWD8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 BTW - great job with your videos. My son and I watch them all.
look at a parts diagram for this bikes carburetor (CMSNL, BikeBandit, Partzilla, etc.), I think there is supposed to be a small brass washer between the main jet and the needle jet that holds it to the carburetor body.
yo with the main jet the top of the jet should unscrew from the body and theres supposed to be a little flat washer in between to keep it from going down.
Its getting faster with the fuel shut off because its too rich. Shutting off fuel leans it out. Sounds like your jetting needs attention if it still does that once its fully broken in.
Can you give me the part numbers to the crank seals. Mine is smoking like a freight train. Getting ready to split the case and redo seals. Are there two seals. Whatever part numbers you have would help out a lot. Thanks. Love the show!!!
This bike has a too rich carburetion at high rpm, so you can't have all the power that it can give to you. At the end you have done a very good restauration, you can't stop to improve this bike at this point👍👍
Is this only registered for off road? I have 1979 xr185 Honda and converted it to a scrambler/cafe racer? Is that a thing? Lol I had Alot of fun working on mine and still lose sleep thinking about what else i could do.

Great bike! Thanks for the video. Can someone please explain what the (grinding) sound I hear when the engine is idling? I have one of these and also a Yamaha lt2 and it does it also. Thanks anybody!
I think it would be very difficult to jet a carb running premix fuel, pump gas, the oil injection hooked up, and stripped or rotted carb parts from sitting outside or previous owners.
The brass washer is missing from under the main jet that secures it, for tuning have a look at the chart at the bottom of the page in this link www.millennium-tech.net/pdf/Jetting_Basics_for_2_Strokes.pdf

Um that mixer jet is not supposed to move like that! That's probably what the reason why it's running rough 11:58
Yes, that tube should be pressed in then the main jet screws in. Should not move with the slide or needle.
Yup I was thinking the same thing. I've seen the brass washer under the jet too.

I’m gonna guess the accelerator pump (emulsion tube) isn’t seated correctly

You need a new carburetor or you must try to repair it. The main jet should not move like this.
It's missing the washer under the jet that holds the emulsion tube in

think your missing a brass washer between the jet and the body which stops it from moving up

There's a washer missing under the main jet where screws onto the emulsion tube. Said washer stops it moving.

Emulsion tube should be press fit! THE HET SHOILD NIT GO UP AND DOWN. This is causing big time mixture problems
The jet on the fly? I don't think that should happen. Awesome job though! The gold chain is all you.
