Fans of Unbreakable had wanted a sequel for over 15 years, but most had moved on and figured it wasnt going to happen. To watch the sequel, without realizing you were watching a sequel, is still one of the greatest reveals Ive ever experienced

The Bruce Willis reveal made us shit our pants in the theaters. I hadn’t seen Unbreakable in years but when the music started in the mirror scene I was like “wait, what the fuck? Why is M. Night using the same… OH FUCK”
I was the same way! I recognized the music and was having difficulty placing it until Bruce Willis was revealed and I was like “OH SHIT!!” I started giggling like a fool

He say you’re going to love this one. I went ‘cool’ and went in not thinking any deeper about why he said that. After the reveal and the end of the movie I went out to the ticket guy and said “Holy fuck!” He grinned and said, “told ya!”
He's GREAT in everything I've ever seen him in. But he was supremely exceptional in this....I've had several rewatches. The hate on this films subject matter is frivolous. This film is outstanding.
This was my first time ever seeing Anya Taylor-Joy and I was hypnotized lol Then I watched her in The VVitch and she was my favorite part of it, she's phenomenal and captivating!
James McAvoy was great and totally deserving of an Oscar, but I also want to point out Betty Buckley as his psychiatrist. I absolutely loved her performance and my favorite scene with her was when she meets Dennis for the first time.

It was a smart move and I we didn’t know, the music cue in the mirror scene sent shivers down the Unbreakable fans, and the rest is history 🧐 (Even if I was personnally kind of disappointed by Glass)
This was, in my opinion, the best of the trilogy. And probably the best M. Night movie. It was horrifying, but none of the characters were 1 dimensional, even the ones we only see for a few seconds. While Glass was probably the weakest of the 3, I think it’s still worth the watch. Seeing the 3 big players of the series on screen at the same time is awesome.
M.Night couldnt help but attempt to subvert our expectations again with Glass and give us an ending nobody wanted. Movie isnt bad its just let down by the ending.

@@apollo1493 yeah. I agree. All of M. Night’s movies are a bit fantastical in some way. So, no matter what, you have to always suspend disbelief and just enjoy it. Whether or not it’s realistic, in my opinion, isn’t a dealbreaker unless the movie is sold on the principle of realism. But, movies in general (I feel) should be just taken for whatever the world and rules are that are established in the movie itself. While aspects of the real thing may be used as inspiration, Hollywood pretty much always equals unrealistic. On that same token, if the movie establishes something, and then completely breaks their own rules for the sake of plot armor, that’s when it becomes problematic to me.
One of the reasons so many fans of Unbreakable wanted a sequel is because Shymalan said when that film came out that it was the first act of the normal three-act structure of a comic book film/story. Act 1 is where the hero gets his powers, learns how to use them, and takes on their hero identity. Act 2 is where the hero establishes themself in the city, fights crime, and has their first battles with the main villain. Act 3 is the final battle with the main villain. Shymalan said that as he was writing Unbreakable he realized that he was only interested in Act 1 for that movie. But he later said that he wanted to make a trilogy of Acts 2 and 3. But nothing ever happened, and by the time Split came out, most fans has resigned themselves to Unbreakable never having a sequel. This reveal literally came out of nowhere for everyone.
That's really only the structure of live action comic interpretations, comics are not filled with as many origin stories as film would have you believe.
@@billbill6094Yes, comic books themselves have a different structure as they are by nature ongoing narratives, full of their own separate stories. I was talking about a comic book film. Although this analogy could also be applied to a most graphic novels or mini-series about of a new character.
A little hat tip. When Barry walked through the trash he (actually, Dennis) didnt do it because he was trying hard not to do it, he did it because he was aware of the cctv. He did it in case Dr Fletcher was looking, so she'd be assured that it wasn't Dennis. In reality, we first see Barry in the recorded clip Casey plays later, before that it was always Dennis pretending to be Barry because Barry was the one supposed to be in the light, he was the one who was in therapy. So Dennis was pretending all the while to keep Dr Fletcher unsuspecting. She still saw through his facade and coerced/motivated him to stop pretending and come clean. That scene where he is keenly listening to what she was saying and is eventually convinced enough to drop the act and switches to his actual form is my favorite piece of acting here from James.

What's amazing about this movie is how it makes you feel bad for everyone involved. You'd usually hate an antagonist who's abducting young girls, but you just end up having pity for him.
I was a fan of McAvoy for years before Split came out, but these performances are truly next-level, some of the greatest acting I've ever seen (and I see A Lot).

I have a friend who has DID. He said Moon Knight is the closest any movie or show has ever gotten to truthfully showing what it's like to have DID, setting aside the superhero aspects.
I can confirm from experience that Moon Knight is better by far. Split perpetuates a lot of harmful steroetyples. Split is great as a suspense flick, but it's terrible for realistically portraying DID.
@@halfdevoured The thing is, Kevin did have good alters. Barry tried so damn hard to save the girls. But I think 'The Hoard' itself was KEvin's power. I don't see it as DID at all, just a manifestation of power the doctor could only understand as such.
It can be really annoying to have movies portray mental illness/disorders/trauma as a "superpower," but when they execute it in a certain way, I really connect to it as someone with similar issues. While it can be hell most of the time, there are definitely aspects that I'm proud of & wouldn't change. And his performance is perfection.
Curious how Jane in Doom Patrol stacks up - obviously it's not realistic (the whole show is heavy on surrealism and metaphor), but are the metaphors they use at least decent?
I cannot overstate how *amazing* it was to watch this movie in the theater and see Bruce Willis in the mid-credits scene. I had *no* idea this was coming - all of the reviews and advertisements did not mention anything about this - or that there was some connection to any of previous Shymalan films. As soon as the woman in the diner mentioned "the crazy guy in the wheelchair" I was like "Wait, what?" and then Willis spoke, and I recognized his voice before the camera revealed him ... one of the few times I have spontaneously exclaimed "Holy shit!" in a theater. The phrase is overused nowadays, but this was one of the few times "my mind was blown" from a movie.
FUN FACT: If you look at McAvoy's hand at the train station his hand is swollen because he broke his knuckle punching a door, and this also why he has a cast in Atomic Blonde
1st movie I saw w/ a DID character was Sybil (1976) w/ Sally Fields. I remember she had 16 personalities.(There is a 2007 TV miniseries remake). She was a real person. There was debate on whether or not she was faking the condition..., well, I'll leave the rest for those who want to watch the movie or read the book.

@23:50 This would be impossible because of the angle of the wire, not necessarily because you can't see the other side. To angle the wire that sharply you would not be able to fit and maneuver it through the top of the doorway in the first place.
After a string of dud films from M.Night I watched this because id heard it was a return to form. When I heard the theme from Unbreakable start playing in Split I genuinely thought "Oh man... M. Night is so down on his luck he's having to use music cues from his own films now to save on the budget". When I saw Willis though I was absolutley floored. Completely unexpected and such a good reveal. So good.
There are recorded cases of different identities having different allergies, eye-glass prescriptions, strength, and dominant hand. It's pretty wild actually. The mind/identity has more control over the body than one would think.
Every M. Night movie has a twist in it to some degree. Something that turns the movie on its head and sometimes just makes you go "WHOA". For this movie it was the fact that it was in the Unbreakable universe. After this movie came out people were anticipating the sequel with all 3 in it and were nicknaming it The Shyamalanavengers. XD
The musical score is so good. The motif that you guys hear is the main theme for The Beast. The reason why it sounds demonic or animalistic is because of the cello and violins were distorted and manipulated. You can hear it play out a few times. Composer West Dylan Thordson intended to make it feel like Jaws in a way. Kind of to let the audience know that The Beast is coming and hell is gonna break loose. I get chills almost every time I hear it. I also like that there are some tender, somber and emotional moments balanced out as well. At times, they had an almost warm or even triumphant quality to the music.
James Mcavoy is my favorite actor. Some parts of glass was filmed close to my home (less than 30 minutes) and we often drive by the house that was used in the movie Signs. The significance of the yellow flowers and if you pay close attention the yellow handkerchief, yellow pants etc. Those are each characters signature colors. Kevin's is yellow, unbreakables David's is Green and in Glass purple for Mr. Glass.
I’ll always remember my first time watching this. I was on a flight home from South Korea during my study abroad and decided to check it out. I loved it almost instantly. I’ll throw this on almost any time I come across it. It’s my favorite James McAvoy performance and one of my favorite Anya Taylor-Joy performances, along with The Menu.
_Spoilers for a really great show (Not Moon Knight)_ What? Mr. Robot is leaps and bounds ahead of Moon Knight on that front (and every other one). The personalities had actual reason for existing and operated not as a completely seperate entity but a person with one knowledge base and the same skills, yet with completely different beliefs, world views, convictions, etc. It wasn't used just a way to explain away actual superpowers (sort of like what hollywood does with aspergers too), it was there to inform the character, why he's shaped the way he is, explaining his relationship with the world and his friends/family, etc.
Yeah, usually they use DID as a shock factor or something scary “like this movie” tho i enjoyed this movie and i think they explained DID in a good way to some extent but I didn’t enjoy how it was showed as a creepy thing if that make sense. Or at least how people reacted to it, moon knight was a perfect example of what DID is. It's not a superpower or evil thing, there’s no monsters or evil alters, DID is developed to protect the mind and body from trauma, there are no evil alters that suddenly comes out just because, it’s simply how the mind protect itself and the body, i think the actor did a phenomenal job in Split but I didn’t exactly liked how it was portrayed as a scary thing. So i agree, MoonKnight was an amazing depiction of DID without making it something scary because it’s not. I think other show did a good job was “the crowded room” sure it has its problems but i think its good.
James McAvoy has crazy range as an actor. He's brilliant at being playful and then terrifying. At the same time he's still the boyfriend who sometimes appears in the comedy Early Doors.
A hell of a film, glad you got to watch it. It does show off how talented an actor James is being able to switch so convincingly between personalities that you can recognize them and the beast is well a monster.
I think she told her to pee on herself because she noticed him wiping down the chair and picked up on him either being OCD/germaphobe and would be disgusted and therefore not try anything.
My understanding is that the Kevin stuff in Split was originally supposed (according to S*****n's conception) to be a part of Unbreakable but he thought it would've made Unbreakable muddled.
For something along these lines, a real life account of multiple (perhaps the most) split personalities, read TRUDDI CHASE - WHEN RABBIT HOWLS. Its a book written by someone who has countless split personalities, or better said, its written by these different personalities. THe "Host" Truddi has witnessed something SO traumatic as a child that her mind just buries her real persona in order to protect her from remembering. No One knows what happened, when it happened or how many personalities there are inside of Truddi.
imo, McAvoy's acting in this is at the very very top of greatest performance in any film ever made. The more times I watch it the more subtle nuance I see in each of his characters, down to the way 'his' eyes move for one but not the other, or the way he breathes. It's an astounding transformation.
I honestly think that knowing that this movie is part of the "unbreakable series" is a pretty big spoiler imo The movie comes off as very grounded in reality so when I first watched it, and you had no idea it was set in that universe, you presumed that "The Beast" was just part of this guys psychosis, so you pass off what he's saying as something that isn't possible Once you know its set in a universe where there are superpowers and you learn about "The Beast", you expect it to be true, rather than the (imo) intended reveal of it being a suprise at the end. That's why it was marketed as something unrelated to unbreakable, because if it was, you'd presume "The Beast" was real
It was *supposed* to be a surprise that it was a sequel to Unbreakable? Let me tell you, it's the biggest twist Shyamalan ever pulled off. All I'd heard about the film was that it was Shyamalan back on form. And it was. But suddenly seeing Bruce Willis in character was gobsmacking in a way that I rarely get from media.
Yeah, that end secret was really hard to keep under wraps. Entertainment news sites pretty much blurted right out in headlines "Holy shit!! Split is Unbreakable 2!!!". Even with it spoiled, like you guys, the rest of the movie distracted me, and it still got me.
It's pretty simple. This was marketed as an M. Night Shyamalan movie like all of his other movies. Suddenly, the Bruce Willis cameo pops up and you realize it's actually a standalone sequel to Unbreakable and this is a supervillain origin story to the superhero origin story that is Unbreakable. That was the twist. Imagine watching The Mist and it cuts to Morgan Freeman's character in Shawshank Redemption narrating the ending.
The direction in this was EXCELLENT. I was hooked from the intro alone. That scene in the car was so captivating. I'm so glad, Shyamalan made a return. Of course I have also been disappointed by work of his (Last Airbender and After Earth being the worst), but I've never really been a downright "hater". I would still rather consider myself a "fan"...
Since this is a Shymalan movie, I was expecting some kind of twist or surprise reveal at the end. But not a tie-in to one of his previous films. I actually have not seen this movie since it was in theaters, nice to get a refresher on how stupifyingly gifted McAvoy is.
Because of the context, that ending was by far the most mind blowing experience I've had in cinema! I had NO IDEA that this movie was a follow-up to Unbreakable. And for like 10 years I had day-dreamed and wished that they would do a sequel. I thought Unbreakable was a perfect origin story for a comic book hero. Done in a realistic, gritty, non-cartoon type of way. It was EPIC! But it was just the beginning. If anything ever needed a sequel, it was unbreakable...SO fast foward to me sitting in the theatre watching this....man! I get chills everytime thinking about it.
You can definitely text 911. I did when I rolled my car into a creek on a 15 degree January night. I dislocated both of my shoulders real bad so couldn't lift the phone to my face so I called it got disconnected and they texted me back and we texted back and forth. Saved my life.
I'm glad to have been able to watch this reaction. I was actually watching Split for the first time myself not all that long ago. Got about halfway through it then went to sleep for the night. When I went to watch the rest the next day it had apparently been taken off the streaming service I was watching it on. So even my enjoyment of Split was split. Good to see how it ends though. I'm sure I missed some little things but it felt pretty full in my understanding on what happens.
When he mentioned Bruce Willis crawling to the other side I was thinking "just you wait." Sometimes here you were so busy duscusiing the functioning of his superhuman traits you missed a lot of the abuse hinting on young and older Anna that was going on on-screen. The idea of different personalities having different physical traits and even different allergies is a based on a real but fringe phenomenon. You don't even need DID to get serious nocebo effect, in fact popularly there is a trend of police officers suffering physical reactions that look like siezures after coming into skin contact with what they believe to be fentanyl, yet their symptoms don't match fentanyl overdose, fentanyl can't be absorbed through the skin, or sometimes what they came jnto contact with wasn't fentanyl at all. Of course this was taken past a realistic level. This movie really redeemed the Shamalyan twist. Nobody went into it with Unbreakable on the mind, but when that end music played and Bruce revealed himself it was masterful.
You mentioned "The Framing." This is where M.Night is brilliant. He frames movies better than anyone. The bleeding patient at the beginning of unbreakable was one of my favorites. WHEN you guys watch "The Village," you'll see some more.
My brother, father, and I went to watch this movie on the first Sunday it was out so in the theater were only us and about six other people. At the very end, all three of us gasped out loud at the Bruce Willis reveal while the rest of the audience didn't understand what was going on. A 20's-something woman asked us what the deal was and we all got the opportunity to explain how we all just unknowingly watched a secret sequel to movies that came out when most of the people listening to us were being born.
In the moment the musical theme from Unbreakable starts to play, I said to myself an incredibly loud "WTF". My jaw utterly disintegrated at that moment. And yes, McAvoy deserves way more awards he has.
Split got me playing a D&D character with two personalities: a female human that once were actually two identical twins but, by some accidental spell in their past, both of them were "fused" into one physical person with two very dfferent minds. I could switch between the two freely but I could only use one at a time. On the roleplay part, whoever of the two was dominant could use a mirror in close proximity so both of them could be in the scene at the same time. One of them was a seriuos/nerdy sorceress and the other was a bubbly/chaotic thief. I actually had two character sheets, one for each personality, with similar stats aside from class specific abilities. You should have seen the faces of the other players at the table, they were so confused, and they looked at me like I was crazy....
It's really challenging having this as your favorite Shyamalan film. Because on one hand, it's INCREDIBLE. James McAvoy gives the performance of a generation, and the film itself is so smartly written with layers upon layers upon complexities. It's also very much Shyamalan's best movie in over a decade. His previous film before this was The Visit, which I think was decent, but it didn't hit that sweet spot of what people think of when they talk about him as one of the great directors. But here he hits it out of the freakin' park. But at the same time...the movie is kind of problematic? xD Like, the film is clearly trying to approach mental health topics from a sympathetic angle, but still ultimately demonizes/stigmatizes it to a certain extent. The fact that it does pull from real world cases and ideas doesn't help. It makes this take seem more legitimate to reality than just a work of fiction. I think this film can still be enjoyed for its merits so long as we take it with a grain (or a Crumb xP) of salt and remember that this is not reflective of reality.
I'm sure I won't be the only one who will say this, but it's so unfortunate that you two already knew it was connected to Unbreakable. Whenever that music started playing towards the end of the film right before they cut to that clip in the diner...I was like..."wait...I know this music..." and the flood of all the clues in the film I just watched started coming in. As soon as I saw Bruce, I f**king lost it lol I hadn't been that excited for a secret ending in so long. That theme is so underrated.
Glass is the end of the trilogy. A lot of folks really hate it, and talk a lot about hating it because of the ending. I was okay with it. My hot take is that Glass doesn't suck and that I'm okay with the sorta pfft ending. Two thirds of the movie is fairly boss. It's a perfectly adequate movie, and I can sorta see where Shyamalan was going with it. It doesn't suck. 6.5/10 in my book.
To get into character, McAvoy would punch a door, just to get the blood pumping. Unfortunately, one time, he missed the mark and broke two knuckles. But still did the scene, slowly getting whiter and more gaunt, as the adrenaline wore off. There's a blink-and-you-miss it scene with Denis putting on his glasses where his hand is completely swollen. Totally not make-up 😦
You mentioned an escape room in which the owner ( "Don't say that! Don't say that!" ) ... even though it is not a perfect representation of your idea I still would recommend "The Cube" from 1997. P.S.: Because you said, "It wouldn't last very long," I would say that the movie "The Cube" would give you a perspective on "it depends." 😁
It was such a cool moment at the end if you know nothing about it. People were taking about the movie and how good it was and it was kind of a comeback for m. Night after a few let downs. It was a classic shyamalan twist without really being a twist. The fact that it was so long after the first movie just stunned everyone. Kindof hard to see this movie without knowing it's part of a trilogy. Gotta have a friend kind of fool you or be like hey you liked this movie let's watch this.
James McAvoy is great in this movie. I'm sure lots of actors would've loved to do the role to showcase their ability. Having said that doing this kind of switch-on-a-dime from one character to another, is one of the things I would imagine is done in acting classes, along with improvisational skills, different accents and all the other abilities that actors must master to be considered a competent actor. It is just some actors have greater mastery of these skills.
I dont know why people piss and moan about Glass. I think it's great. No it's not up to the standard of Split but it's still incredibly entertaining and twisty.

This movie solidified James MacAvoy as one of my favorites, his skill. I already liked Anya Taylor from Vvitch but both of them together is like magic

It makes sense they would underplay the movie. As M. Night had a reputation his movies always had a big twist.
It also didn't help no studio wanted to fund his movies.

@@apollo1493 yeah. I agree. All of M. Night’s movies are a bit fantastical in some way. So, no matter what, you have to always suspend disbelief and just enjoy it. Whether or not it’s realistic, in my opinion, isn’t a dealbreaker unless the movie is sold on the principle of realism. But, movies in general (I feel) should be just taken for whatever the world and rules are that are established in the movie itself. While aspects of the real thing may be used as inspiration, Hollywood pretty much always equals unrealistic.
On that same token, if the movie establishes something, and then completely breaks their own rules for the sake of plot armor, that’s when it becomes problematic to me.
Is it weird that my biggest takeaway after watching this film was "James MCavoy would make a great Dungeon Master".

One of the reasons so many fans of Unbreakable wanted a sequel is because Shymalan said when that film came out that it was the first act of the normal three-act structure of a comic book film/story.
Act 1 is where the hero gets his powers, learns how to use them, and takes on their hero identity.
Act 2 is where the hero establishes themself in the city, fights crime, and has their first battles with the main villain.
Act 3 is the final battle with the main villain.
Shymalan said that as he was writing Unbreakable he realized that he was only interested in Act 1 for that movie. But he later said that he wanted to make a trilogy of Acts 2 and 3. But nothing ever happened, and by the time Split came out, most fans has resigned themselves to Unbreakable never having a sequel. This reveal literally came out of nowhere for everyone.
That's really only the structure of live action comic interpretations, comics are not filled with as many origin stories as film would have you believe.

A little hat tip. When Barry walked through the trash he (actually, Dennis) didnt do it because he was trying hard not to do it, he did it because he was aware of the cctv. He did it in case Dr Fletcher was looking, so she'd be assured that it wasn't Dennis. In reality, we first see Barry in the recorded clip Casey plays later, before that it was always Dennis pretending to be Barry because Barry was the one supposed to be in the light, he was the one who was in therapy. So Dennis was pretending all the while to keep Dr Fletcher unsuspecting. She still saw through his facade and coerced/motivated him to stop pretending and come clean. That scene where he is keenly listening to what she was saying and is eventually convinced enough to drop the act and switches to his actual form is my favorite piece of acting here from James.

What's amazing about this movie is how it makes you feel bad for everyone involved. You'd usually hate an antagonist who's abducting young girls, but you just end up having pity for him.

I was a fan of McAvoy for years before Split came out, but these performances are truly next-level, some of the greatest acting I've ever seen (and I see A Lot).

I have a friend who has DID. He said Moon Knight is the closest any movie or show has ever gotten to truthfully showing what it's like to have DID, setting aside the superhero aspects.
There's also a character in Iron Fist S2, Mary Walker, that is surprisingly accurate to what having DID is like.
I can confirm from experience that Moon Knight is better by far. Split perpetuates a lot of harmful steroetyples. Split is great as a suspense flick, but it's terrible for realistically portraying DID.

But I think 'The Hoard' itself was KEvin's power. I don't see it as DID at all, just a manifestation of power the doctor could only understand as such.
It can be really annoying to have movies portray mental illness/disorders/trauma as a "superpower," but when they execute it in a certain way, I really connect to it as someone with similar issues. While it can be hell most of the time, there are definitely aspects that I'm proud of & wouldn't change. And his performance is perfection.
Curious how Jane in Doom Patrol stacks up - obviously it's not realistic (the whole show is heavy on surrealism and metaphor), but are the metaphors they use at least decent?
I cannot overstate how *amazing* it was to watch this movie in the theater and see Bruce Willis in the mid-credits scene. I had *no* idea this was coming - all of the reviews and advertisements did not mention anything about this - or that there was some connection to any of previous Shymalan films.
As soon as the woman in the diner mentioned "the crazy guy in the wheelchair" I was like "Wait, what?" and then Willis spoke, and I recognized his voice before the camera revealed him ... one of the few times I have spontaneously exclaimed "Holy shit!" in a theater. The phrase is overused nowadays, but this was one of the few times "my mind was blown" from a movie.
The opening scene is the King of Prussia Mall, just a few miles from me. Until recently it was the biggest mall in the US.

1st movie I saw w/ a DID character was Sybil (1976) w/ Sally Fields. I remember she had 16 personalities.(There is a 2007 TV miniseries remake). She was a real person. There was debate on whether or not she was faking the condition..., well, I'll leave the rest for those who want to watch the movie or read the book.

@23:50 This would be impossible because of the angle of the wire, not necessarily because you can't see the other side. To angle the wire that sharply you would not be able to fit and maneuver it through the top of the doorway in the first place.

After a string of dud films from M.Night I watched this because id heard it was a return to form.
When I heard the theme from Unbreakable start playing in Split I genuinely thought "Oh man... M. Night is so down on his luck he's having to use music cues from his own films now to save on the budget".
When I saw Willis though I was absolutley floored.
Completely unexpected and such a good reveal.

There are recorded cases of different identities having different allergies, eye-glass prescriptions, strength, and dominant hand. It's pretty wild actually. The mind/identity has more control over the body than one would think.
Every M. Night movie has a twist in it to some degree. Something that turns the movie on its head and sometimes just makes you go "WHOA". For this movie it was the fact that it was in the Unbreakable universe. After this movie came out people were anticipating the sequel with all 3 in it and were nicknaming it The Shyamalanavengers. XD
I still get goosebumps when the Unbreakable music kicks in at the end. This reveal was genius.
The musical score is so good. The motif that you guys hear is the main theme for The Beast. The reason why it sounds demonic or animalistic is because of the cello and violins were distorted and manipulated. You can hear it play out a few times. Composer West Dylan Thordson intended to make it feel like Jaws in a way. Kind of to let the audience know that The Beast is coming and hell is gonna break loose. I get chills almost every time I hear it. I also like that there are some tender, somber and emotional moments balanced out as well. At times, they had an almost warm or even triumphant quality to the music.
James Mcavoy is my favorite actor. Some parts of glass was filmed close to my home (less than 30 minutes) and we often drive by the house that was used in the movie Signs. The significance of the yellow flowers and if you pay close attention the yellow handkerchief, yellow pants etc. Those are each characters signature colors. Kevin's is yellow, unbreakables David's is Green and in Glass purple for Mr. Glass.
I’ll always remember my first time watching this. I was on a flight home from South Korea during my study abroad and decided to check it out. I loved it almost instantly. I’ll throw this on almost any time I come across it. It’s my favorite James McAvoy performance and one of my favorite Anya Taylor-Joy performances, along with The Menu.
Not a huge fan of DID characters movies, but the only fiction I've seen so far that made a really good job portraying DID was Moon Knight

What? Mr. Robot is leaps and bounds ahead of Moon Knight on that front (and every other one). The personalities had actual reason for existing and operated not as a completely seperate entity but a person with one knowledge base and the same skills, yet with completely different beliefs, world views, convictions, etc. It wasn't used just a way to explain away actual superpowers (sort of like what hollywood does with aspergers too), it was there to inform the character, why he's shaped the way he is, explaining his relationship with the world and his friends/family, etc.
Yeah, usually they use DID as a shock factor or something scary “like this movie” tho i enjoyed this movie and i think they explained DID in a good way to some extent but I didn’t enjoy how it was showed as a creepy thing if that make sense. Or at least how people reacted to it, moon knight was a perfect example of what DID is.
It's not a superpower or evil thing, there’s no monsters or evil alters, DID is developed to protect the mind and body from trauma, there are no evil alters that suddenly comes out just because, it’s simply how the mind protect itself and the body, i think the actor did a phenomenal job in Split but I didn’t exactly liked how it was portrayed as a scary thing. So i agree, MoonKnight was an amazing depiction of DID without making it something scary because it’s not. I think other show did a good job was “the crowded room” sure it has its problems but i think its good.

James McAvoy has crazy range as an actor. He's brilliant at being playful and then terrifying. At the same time he's still the boyfriend who sometimes appears in the comedy Early Doors.
A hell of a film, glad you got to watch it. It does show off how talented an actor James is being able to switch so convincingly between personalities that you can recognize them and the beast is well a monster.
I think she told her to pee on herself because she noticed him wiping down the chair and picked up on him either being OCD/germaphobe and would be disgusted and therefore not try anything.
It's also likely a tried and true method from her own experience with abuse, unfortunately.
My understanding is that the Kevin stuff in Split was originally supposed (according to S*****n's conception) to be a part of Unbreakable but he thought it would've made Unbreakable muddled.
Some people didn’t like GLASS but I thought it was a terrific capper to one of the best superhero trilogies of all time.

For something along these lines, a real life account of multiple (perhaps the most) split personalities, read TRUDDI CHASE - WHEN RABBIT HOWLS. Its a book written by someone who has countless split personalities, or better said, its written by these different personalities. THe "Host" Truddi has witnessed something SO traumatic as a child that her mind just buries her real persona in order to protect her from remembering. No One knows what happened, when it happened or how many personalities there are inside of Truddi.
imo, McAvoy's acting in this is at the very very top of greatest performance in any film ever made. The more times I watch it the more subtle nuance I see in each of his characters, down to the way 'his' eyes move for one but not the other, or the way he breathes. It's an astounding transformation.

The movie comes off as very grounded in reality so when I first watched it, and you had no idea it was set in that universe, you presumed that "The Beast" was just part of this guys psychosis, so you pass off what he's saying as something that isn't possible
Once you know its set in a universe where there are superpowers and you learn about "The Beast", you expect it to be true, rather than the (imo) intended reveal of it being a suprise at the end.
That's why it was marketed as something unrelated to unbreakable, because if it was, you'd presume "The Beast" was real

It was *supposed* to be a surprise that it was a sequel to Unbreakable? Let me tell you, it's the biggest twist Shyamalan ever pulled off. All I'd heard about the film was that it was Shyamalan back on form. And it was. But suddenly seeing Bruce Willis in character was gobsmacking in a way that I rarely get from media.
Finally someone other than me recognized and appreciated Macavoy's performance. He definitely should have got an award for this or at least nominated.

Yeah, that end secret was really hard to keep under wraps. Entertainment news sites pretty much blurted right out in headlines "Holy shit!! Split is Unbreakable 2!!!". Even with it spoiled, like you guys, the rest of the movie distracted me, and it still got me.
If you want to see another unhinged McAvoy performance watch Filth. Not an easy watch, but a good performance nontheless

It's pretty simple. This was marketed as an M. Night Shyamalan movie like all of his other movies. Suddenly, the Bruce Willis cameo pops up and you realize it's actually a standalone sequel to Unbreakable and this is a supervillain origin story to the superhero origin story that is Unbreakable. That was the twist. Imagine watching The Mist and it cuts to Morgan Freeman's character in Shawshank Redemption narrating the ending.
James McAvoy is such a presence in this film. The way he switches seems so effortless. Second to James is Oscar Isaac.
The direction in this was EXCELLENT. I was hooked from the intro alone. That scene in the car was so captivating.
I'm so glad, Shyamalan made a return. Of course I have also been disappointed by work of his (Last Airbender and After Earth being the worst), but I've never really been a downright "hater". I would still rather consider myself a "fan"...
Since this is a Shymalan movie, I was expecting some kind of twist or surprise reveal at the end. But not a tie-in to one of his previous films. I actually have not seen this movie since it was in theaters, nice to get a refresher on how stupifyingly gifted McAvoy is.

Because of the context, that ending was by far the most mind blowing experience I've had in cinema! I had NO IDEA that this movie was a follow-up to Unbreakable. And for like 10 years I had day-dreamed and wished that they would do a sequel. I thought Unbreakable was a perfect origin story for a comic book hero. Done in a realistic, gritty, non-cartoon type of way. It was EPIC! But it was just the beginning. If anything ever needed a sequel, it was unbreakable...SO fast foward to me sitting in the theatre watching this....man! I get chills everytime thinking about it.

We did not know that this had any connection to Unbreakable when this came out in theaters. Seeing Bruce Willis in the end was INCREDIBLE!

I'm glad to have been able to watch this reaction. I was actually watching Split for the first time myself not all that long ago. Got about halfway through it then went to sleep for the night. When I went to watch the rest the next day it had apparently been taken off the streaming service I was watching it on. So even my enjoyment of Split was split. Good to see how it ends though. I'm sure I missed some little things but it felt pretty full in my understanding on what happens.

Sometimes here you were so busy duscusiing the functioning of his superhuman traits you missed a lot of the abuse hinting on young and older Anna that was going on on-screen.
The idea of different personalities having different physical traits and even different allergies is a based on a real but fringe phenomenon. You don't even need DID to get serious nocebo effect, in fact popularly there is a trend of police officers suffering physical reactions that look like siezures after coming into skin contact with what they believe to be fentanyl, yet their symptoms don't match fentanyl overdose, fentanyl can't be absorbed through the skin, or sometimes what they came jnto contact with wasn't fentanyl at all. Of course this was taken past a realistic level.
This movie really redeemed the Shamalyan twist. Nobody went into it with Unbreakable on the mind, but when that end music played and Bruce revealed himself it was masterful.
Shyamalan: "James, I'd like to you be in this movie I'm planning..."
McAvoy: "Cool, what character did you have in mind for me?"

You mentioned "The Framing." This is where M.Night is brilliant. He frames movies better than anyone. The bleeding patient at the beginning of unbreakable was one of my favorites. WHEN you guys watch "The Village," you'll see some more.
My brother, father, and I went to watch this movie on the first Sunday it was out so in the theater were only us and about six other people. At the very end, all three of us gasped out loud at the Bruce Willis reveal while the rest of the audience didn't understand what was going on. A 20's-something woman asked us what the deal was and we all got the opportunity to explain how we all just unknowingly watched a secret sequel to movies that came out when most of the people listening to us were being born.
In the moment the musical theme from Unbreakable starts to play, I said to myself an incredibly loud "WTF".
My jaw utterly disintegrated at that moment.
And yes, McAvoy deserves way more awards he has.
I love Split, Mcavoy is stellar in it but my fave Shamaylan movie will always be Lady in the Water…love that film
Split got me playing a D&D character with two personalities: a female human that once were actually two identical twins but, by some accidental spell in their past, both of them were "fused" into one physical person with two very dfferent minds. I could switch between the two freely but I could only use one at a time. On the roleplay part, whoever of the two was dominant could use a mirror in close proximity so both of them could be in the scene at the same time. One of them was a seriuos/nerdy sorceress and the other was a bubbly/chaotic thief. I actually had two character sheets, one for each personality, with similar stats aside from class specific abilities. You should have seen the faces of the other players at the table, they were so confused, and they looked at me like I was crazy....
Oh man I can't wait for the Glass reaction. , these are crazy movies.
It's really challenging having this as your favorite Shyamalan film. Because on one hand, it's INCREDIBLE. James McAvoy gives the performance of a generation, and the film itself is so smartly written with layers upon layers upon complexities. It's also very much Shyamalan's best movie in over a decade. His previous film before this was The Visit, which I think was decent, but it didn't hit that sweet spot of what people think of when they talk about him as one of the great directors. But here he hits it out of the freakin' park.
But at the same time...the movie is kind of problematic? xD Like, the film is clearly trying to approach mental health topics from a sympathetic angle, but still ultimately demonizes/stigmatizes it to a certain extent. The fact that it does pull from real world cases and ideas doesn't help. It makes this take seem more legitimate to reality than just a work of fiction. I think this film can still be enjoyed for its merits so long as we take it with a grain (or a Crumb xP) of salt and remember that this is not reflective of reality.
I'm sure I won't be the only one who will say this, but it's so unfortunate that you two already knew it was connected to Unbreakable. Whenever that music started playing towards the end of the film right before they cut to that clip in the diner...I was like..."wait...I know this music..." and the flood of all the clues in the film I just watched started coming in. As soon as I saw Bruce, I f**king lost it lol I hadn't been that excited for a secret ending in so long. That theme is so underrated.
There IS a movie called Escape Room and it is a horror film. And it has a sequel.
Decided to watch this while walking on a treadmill at the gym, only to look up and see this movie was being shown on one of the TVs.
Please absolutely watch "Glass" also. It's THE best super hero movie imo. So much fun, so different to the MCU-stuff.
This is such an awesome trilo.. wait, try to forget that "Glass" is part of the trilogy too, no reason for it next time but it is a thing now 🙂

A lot of folks really hate it, and talk a lot about hating it because of the ending. I was okay with it. My hot take is that Glass doesn't suck and that I'm okay with the sorta pfft ending.
Two thirds of the movie is fairly boss. It's a perfectly adequate movie, and I can sorta see where Shyamalan was going with it.
It doesn't suck. 6.5/10 in my book.
To get into character, McAvoy would punch a door, just to get the blood pumping. Unfortunately, one time, he missed the mark and broke two knuckles. But still did the scene, slowly getting whiter and more gaunt, as the adrenaline wore off. There's a blink-and-you-miss it scene with Denis putting on his glasses where his hand is completely swollen. Totally not make-up 😦
You mentioned an escape room in which the owner ( "Don't say that! Don't say that!" ) ... even though it is not a perfect representation of your idea I still would recommend "The Cube" from 1997.
P.S.: Because you said, "It wouldn't last very long," I would say that the movie "The Cube" would give you a perspective on "it depends." 😁
It was such a cool moment at the end if you know nothing about it. People were taking about the movie and how good it was and it was kind of a comeback for m. Night after a few let downs. It was a classic shyamalan twist without really being a twist. The fact that it was so long after the first movie just stunned everyone. Kindof hard to see this movie without knowing it's part of a trilogy. Gotta have a friend kind of fool you or be like hey you liked this movie let's watch this.
James McAvoy is great in this movie. I'm sure lots of actors would've loved to do the role to showcase their ability.
Having said that doing this kind of switch-on-a-dime from one character to another, is one of the things I would imagine is done in acting classes, along with improvisational skills, different accents and all the other abilities that actors must master to be considered a competent actor. It is just some actors have greater mastery of these skills.
