    Just came across your great teaching youtube video on the 242 rebuild. I don't know how to ask a question with youtube, so if I am trying to use this forum to ask a question. Quick history... back 18 years old I wanted to be like my uncle, he had a big compressor and I wanted one also. I went to a local industrial pump service business, at which they had two Devillbiss-model 230, sitting on 60 gallon horizontal tanks powered by 3 phase motors. They were rebuilt by them for the Postoffice here in Cleveland, Ohio. After getting the bill, the post office decided to upgrade to newer units. I picked one up from them, after they removed the 3 phase for a couple hundred bucks. Equipped it with a substantial 100 lb. GE 3 HP single phase, drug it home and surprised my mother by putting it in her 1 car garage, Fast forward... 50 years... and was still using it for anything I, or the grandchildren needed. Unfortunately we had a storm creating a brown out, followed by a power surge while in use and afterward it needed another motor. Opted at my age to just watch for a cheap replacement, and at a cheap estate sale picked up a complete IR 242 that was running with pressure set at a 125 shut off. My question... I would like to service the oil and have no idea what it requires and am having trouble on Dr. Google locating the info with any trust. Can you help?

      good question, thanks for reaching out. I use almost exclusively Amsoil compressor oil for most oil changes. here is the link to what I recommend for your pump.
      www.amsoil.com/p/synthetic-compressor-oil--iso-46-sae-20-pci/
      If you can't get it locally I can ship it to you. you will need 2 qts for an oil change. it will only take a qt and 1/2 so do not get excited when it is full and you have some oil left.

      @@THECompressorGuru I started to ask you a follow up and then lost the message. I'm new to conversation in the forum. Q: Here in Cleveland, Ohio: my compressor lives in an unheated attached garage. At which the temperature ranges from 25 degrees (winter) to 85 degrees (summer). Is your oil grade recommendation still the same? Plus with the oil plug removed, where is considered full? Thanks for all the help.

      @@GeorgeKravetz my recommendation is the same. you may need to use a block heater on the very coldest of days but 20w is a great all round for the IR compressors.
      with the oil fill plug out fill to the top of the threads. DO NOT OVER FILL!!! also if you need to you may contact me through thecompressorguru.com

    My dad put a 5 inch pipe from the air intake on the pump and a filter and a new bigger air filter. And wow it was quiter..running..have u tried that? On your pumps..

      What is a Bag filter, or what are you calling a bag filter? We have run many compressor intakes out side using large pvc pipe to help cut down shop noise.

      Bad spelling I'm bad..an air filler,.. taller with foam around the media my dad put a 5 in black piping to raise the filter ..it sounded quieter when running..have u experienced this ? To help with lowering the sound of the beast..

      My dad alway had used copper tubing the heavier thickness and flared the ends.to the inlet - air in to the piston casing..the globe inground I have .witch used to be in our station. Was fiberglass. Around the casing..it was 3 yrs old at the time..out of 5 lifts newest one ..I had put on the trailer... we plugged the air opening in the casing with a iron plug and stored it wrapped in the tarp..till I built my new home shop garage..next to house 3 years later...it was easy to reinstall.. its now used for everything in my man cave ..car repairs ,and removing tractor blades off.to our party we have as an buffet table..for food.. I did install a ball valve on the contols.so no one can raise or lower it..I can remove the handle that easy....I did my homework..in planning..this .ty for your video s I watch most evenings..refreshing..u 2 put on utube..ty

    Can you get the unloader pin for the 242,if not do you know the total length of one!Thanks Guru!

    • @THECompressorGuru
      @THECompressorGuru  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes I can it comes from IR and is pricey. I recommend using a unloader type pressure switch . it will be cheaper and easier. you may contact me through thecompressorguru.com

    Hello Guru. I have finished repairing my IR 242. There is a loud knocking noise 2 minutes after starting.
    The piston pin of the low pressure piston enters the piston easily, I pushed it with my hand. Could this be causing the knock?

    • @THECompressorGuru
      @THECompressorGuru  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sounds heat related so that could be a reasonable guess.

      @@THECompressorGuru The compressor is working! The problem was the too small piston to cylinder wall clearance of 0.0012 inches. The piston heated up and began to jam in the cylinder, scratches appeared on the cylinder wall and on the piston wall.
      When I doubled the piston to cylinder wall Clearance to 0.0024" the compressor started working fine.

    why is there any concern about hardware falling down in to the cylinders if they're in closed recesses? if it was in an open hole, is it's using a nut and screw, it could fall in regardless of which one is on top. if the plate is threaded it'd be different, where screw in top couldn't fall in. is that the case?

      I know what your saying . it seems like the perfect storm or worst case senerio is always something i end up dealing with. I have seen many times the parts on valve disc ( IR) and small hardware IR and other brands end up on top f a piston banging away like the machine is going to explode.

    I’m actually trying to get a unloaded for the same machine I found one for 67$ and I capped the high pressure side off and left the main body open almsot no blow bye so I think rebuild recently
